  • Hamas’s attack on October 7 shocked the world and upended the status quo in the Middle East. Two months into Israel’s war against Hamas, much remains unclear. What is Israel’s endgame in the Gaza Strip? Who can govern Gaza when the fighting ends? How have Hamas’s attack and Israel’s response reshaped the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? How high are the risks of escalation and what will the conflict mean for the region?
Foreign Affairs Editor Daniel Kurtz-Phelan marks the launch of the January/February 2024 issue with a discussion of these questions with Lisa Anderson, Salam Fayyad, and Amos Yadlin.
This event originally aired on December14, 2023.

Thank you for airing this was really useful. One of the best dialogue on this topic that I have heard, hands down.

Interesting to hear the views. The General doesn't have a firm grasp of WWII history or current assessment of US forays into Middle East or Afghanistan. It appears that many countries, chiefly Israel, US and some neighbors lost interest in a Palestinian state and left the issue to Israel which did everything it could, within certain parameters, to frustrate that aspiration wherever it could. Think Ireland. And bear in mind no country has invincible security as Israel clearly thought it achieved. The US hasn't articulated a clear vision for the future or its justification for its conduct in its present wars.

Do political accommodations produce a stable peace in the middle east? Or do facts on the ground and deterrence produce periods of temporary calm? What produced the calm in northern Israel between 2006 and today? Would you really expect Hamas to honor any agreements it made with Israel? At this point would you expect Israel to trust such agreements?

@@LukVikRelative trustworthyness is important and Israel is more-so than PLO.

Not the most productive of discussions, unlike 99.9% of those previously featured on this channel. But how could it be? The international reaction is tainted by the nature of who is fighting this war, and any possibility of a two-state solution ended on October 7th. In fairness, it was slim prospect beforehand. The only beneficiary here is Putin who might well see this as the best 71th birthday present imaginable.
