Surprise is a serious consideration. Rangers are surprised only on a 1, and can surprise on a 1-3. Elves & Halflings are surprised on a 1-2, and can surprise on a 1-4. Frankly, I’m not really sure how I’d recalculate the odds if they met Kech. If a Ranger is involved, I think I’d be prone to reduce the Kech’s chance of surprise to 1-4 (or maybe 1-3?). The Rangers could surprise on 1-3 IF they wear soft boots & leather armour or elfin chain. Hard boots or studded leather will reduce their chance of surprise to 1-2, and any other armour will negate it entirely.
I've heard you mention druids a few times. How important is alignment at your tables, and if you use it much, how do you run absolute neutral for them?
I allow druids to be Neutral Good, True Neutral or Neutral Evil. If a player is playing a True Neutral Druid I make sure they adhere to their commitment to nature before anything else. This has led to some great role-playing interactions.
@@page121tabletoproleplaying4 There’s actually a deeper reason for Reincarnation as opposed to Resurrection given in the PHB & De&De involving the afterlife, which most gamers are completely unaware of. Generally speaking, Elves can’t be raised from the dead. I hope that you’ll explore that aspect when you go over the spell.
We had a PC get reincarnated, against the players will, into a bugbear. That player was really upset but we encouraged him to make the best of it. He did have his past memories but not his class/levels.
@@CaptCook999 “Reincarnation: Regardless of the form of the creature in which the character is reincarnated, allow the new form to progress as far as possible in characteristics and abilities. For example, a badger character could grow to giant size, have maximum hit points, plus bonus points for a high constitution, and the intelligence level of its former character. A centaur reincarnation might eventually gain hit dice up to 5, 6, 7, or even 8, and it would be eligible to wear armor, use magic items, etc.” - DMG pg 44. “Note: Very good or very evil persons will not be reincarnated as creatures whose general alignment is the opposite.” - PHB pg 86. As a player, I’d be pissed too if the rules weren’t followed. But, at the same time, I’d have the rules ready at my fingertips if the DM tried anything that wasn’t kosher. 😉 Once the ruling is made, it’s too late to change it later on. FWIW, I do try to bring back the character at its former class & levels, rather than making them start all over at 1st level. Because that simply makes the Reincarnation spell effectively useless - might as well just say, “Roll up a new character starting at 1st level.” So, the whole idea behind the spell is to bring the old character back, with its prior class, levels, alignment, and abilities or as close as one can get considering the new form. (This is why if the new form is clearly NOT appropriate, another form is rolled or selected.) That way, one is both following the RAW and the RAI.
I enjoy all of Pade121 Tabletop Roleplaying Games videos 😅
Thanks for the video! Keches are tricksy, for sure!
Great video. Never had Monster Manual II but just snagged a copy on eBay. Can't wait to peruse it.

I love the 1E MM2 and the kech are probably my favourite creatures in there. They did them in 2E but they did not look anywhere near as cool.

Hey, Tony, have you done, or will you be doing any review of the Reincarnation spells (Druid & Magic-user)? I think that could be interesting.
I haven't yet but I will.
