You explain things clearly! Can you do a video on how you then apply the primer? Tips on how to get a smooth finish and minimize runs, bubbles, etc. Do you prime everything on the interior of the structure?
These are great! I really like the topic angle so I can search for what I'm personally doing (when I actually build haha). Maybe some links or product descriptions on primer, mask in the Description. Also, do you really need to prime? kidding... totally kidding hahaha
Great video! Love it! I saw some people that were priming overlapping pieces on both sides. For example, a piece of skin would be primed completely on the interior but about 1 inch from the side is also primed on the opposite (exterior) side. Is that something you also do?
Good video. I use the 3M half mask as well as the full face, filtered air. What I really like and use primarily is the full face 3M with the supplied air adapter “Y” hose. Of course, do need grade D supplied air. Thanks!
Hey Guil, any chance you’re planning (or willing to do) a fiberglass tutorial video? There is quite a bit of fiberglass work in the tip fairings and especially when you get to the cabin top/doors and cowlings.
I don't really have any fiberglass coming up for a while but I'm happy to do one when it does. I think my next fg will be the cabin top. OK, I lie, Mary does all the fiberglass as it drives me nuts, I'll let her know I'll be recording when she does the cabin top :-D
@@BuildFlyGo LOL, I too am not a fan. Which is why I was asking for the video. I thought maybe you might have some insight I hadn’t figured out yet while doing the tips.
Thank you, very informative! It would be nice to see how you spray the primer on just the insides of the aluminum parts in a part 2 ... that is if you have the time. Do you put only 1 coat of primer or 2 coats?
I'm sorting out how to do that video. I need to prime through the winter but don't currently have a paint booth. I'll figure it out :) The Akzo spec sheet recommends a single wet coat.
Thanks for posting. I'll never build one of these beauties but I do enjoy watch the process. Do you ever pass over the dried parts with a hair dryer after toweling them off to make sure there's no residual water in the rivet holes? It just seems like water left in the holes might screw up the priming job.
@@BuildFlyGo Maybe I though of an issue that doesn't exist. I don't know if it's been awarded, but I was hoping to get the AOPA RV10 Sweepstake plane. I could never afford it and I'm sure as heck not going to build one.
Great videos. Keep up the good work. Most paint spray guns are made out of aluminum so that paint does not stick to them. However, the AKZO is specially designed to stick to aluminum. What kind of spray gun are you using, and how do you clean it after each use?
I started with the $20 HF special but moved to a 3M AccuSpray with disposable tips for the RV-10. Honestly the HF was good enough for spraying primer :)
Thanks for the great videos! Can you share the type or model of paint sprayer you use and how many CFM it requires to operate? Need to shop for these items. Thanks very much! Keep up the great work and thanks for educating!
I'm currently using a 3M AccuSpray but I did the entire RV-9A with a cheapo Harbor-Freight unit. The 3M makes it much easier to clean, with the removable nozzles, and I'm all about minimizing time I deal with primer :)
@@BuildFlyGo Thanks for the reply! I read the 3M manual and watched a number of the 3M YT videos but they aren't consistent in their recommended gun settings. I learned a lot from my first priming session yesterday. The most important thing I learned was I was too far away from the material. I was 12-15" away. I've been told I should have been much closer.
I'm only priming the insides, so no topcoat. For topcoat you should use a compatible primer/topcoat system as the better ones are really finicky and you want to make sure they match.
I use the "standard" size, which is 22oz. I often wish I have a set of Mini (6oz) as well so I could mix smaller batches. With the standard the minimum you can mix is 2oz, which is often too much if I just need to spray a small part.
I'm really enjoying these how to video's. Great job!

Yes! I'm trying to figure out how to do that without ruining my camera ;)
There it is! Thank you for doing a video on this!
This is exactly what was needed!

I'm tempted to swap to a PAPR because of the beard. I think I get a tiny bit of breakthrough and I'd like to avoid that.

That's an interesting idea. I have not had issues with water in the holes, I suspect from the cleaning process creating a no-water-break surface?

Great video! Do you recall what you have your 3M Accuspray gun knobs set to for using Akzo?
I do not, sorry. I want to say I reset them with each new batch as I might change to topcoat. Read the accuspray doc, it talks about how to set them.

There are several different AKZO epoxy primers...The one sold by Aircraft Spruce? Flexible version...Corrosion Resistant with (with chromates)?
This one: www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/akzoprimer.php
Hi, Guil, great video, what is the process to prep for a top coat when using the akzo epoxy primer?

Gill, do you number your parts before priming, and does the marking show through the primer?
The ones that are not obvious I do. Black sharpie shows through ok.
What brand garage heater do you have? You running off propane. Just wondering if you prime in the garage.
It's a Modine Hot Dawg unit heater running off NG.
What size cups for the PPS system do you find work the best for priming sessions?
