    A technic pin sorting machine using compressed air for ejecting pins
    The pins are feed from the tumbler one by one and dropped on a fast moving conveyor. This ensures a minimum distance between the pins. Next they pass a color senor which measures the color, shape and length of the pin. These measurements are compared to the profiles of all types of pins and scored by similarity. The matching profile gives which output to activated and when to do it. Pins that don't pass the similarity threshold are ignored and drops in the container at the end of the conveyor.

    this is one of the best mindstorm models on youtube yet it has hardly any views. youtube search algorithm is poor. Ingenious and elegant. so you multiplex the same motor for two different pins by timing?

    • @1boxshop756
      @1boxshop756 9 років тому +1

      If my assumption is correct then why could you not use 1 motor?

      Thanks!
      Yes you are correct, one motor controls two ejection nozzles. We tried to use only one motor but the pressure drop in all the tubing was too large.
      And the disadvantage of using multiple nozzles per motor is that you have to slow down the pinfeeder so that each pin has the time to travel past all nozzels before you scan the next one.
      On this setup we can scan new pins continuously and have them in a ejection queue.
      So during the transport of a pin too the later nozzels we can scan a new pin and eject it, if the nozzle is close to the scanner. That is why the most common pins is closest to the sensor.

      If you could spare a couple of EVO 3 , and use one motor per nozzle we could manage 5-10pin/sec.

      Andreas Nilsson could you please provide a little detail of how the motor turns the air on and off? I cannot see properly but presume you are squashing the rubber tube to stop the air rather than using a lego pneumatic switch?

    But how does it differnetiate between the long blue pins and the short blue pins? As far as I can tell there's only the colour sensor to sort them.

    • @andrewfirestone1657
      @andrewfirestone1657 7 років тому +24

      It is measuring the length of time it reads the colour values and compares it to a database that defines the pieces. A blue return for 5 readings could be a short blue peg and a blue return for 7 readings would be a long peg.

    I just love this ! I am currently trying to make a pin sorter myself. Quite hard ! Do you only use color to sort the pins ? I would like to sort the 2 and 3 blue, black and grey pins. I was thinking of the color sensor to do this final job, but my main problem now is how to sort the 1, 2 and 3 heights pins. Thanks for that great machine !
    PS : where do you get sooooo many pieces ? Can you buy them by kilo ???

    • @McKvack2
      @McKvack2  8 років тому +1

      +Romain Schmid I only use the color sensor. Since the speed on the belt is known, the time from the first sensor read and the last gives the length. But using the length and color separate didn't get a good enough result. So we collect 7 variables and an array of how the colorvalue varied while passing the sensor.
      These values are compared to predefined pin-profiles and scored according to there difference. the best scoring profile is chosen as the "winner" and ejected at the right collection bin.
      And in the case of asymmetrical pins we have two profiles, one for each direction the pin can pass, e.g. is the tow-ball pint traveling with the ball-section first or the pin-section first.
      We spend more than a year one this design and we hope that we can do a faster version with the new EV3, but we both have small kids now and there just isn't enough time right now.

    • @McKvack2
