- The Sonic R prototype is an early demo version of Sonic R, dated 10th Sept. 1997 (the final release date was 18th Nov. 1997). It was released by drx during the February 23rd, 2008 proto release. The demo features three levels - Resort Island, Radical City and Reactive Factory - which are selected via a simple menu system. There are five playable characters - Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, as well as Dr. Eggman who is selectable from the start. There is also a two-player versus mode and time attack.

The prototype artwork cover looks way better than the final version.
It appears as extra artwork in the credits with metal sonic included in the final release I believe.
Everyone agrees.

I find it ironic that the prototype has a better title screen than the final game.
The original titlescreen is in the credits sequence of the final game.

@@ToastyMann According to the lead developer, it was because Sega wanted it changed, because Metal Sonic's inclusion was a spoiler to one of the unlockables.

To think only this much of the game was finished in September, and then somehow they finished it all by November is nuts to me, that’s kinda crazy.
It might just be me, but it looks slightly easier to control Sonic in this prototype.

I know that, but Sonic R was released in 1997, back when he went by Ivo Robotnik in PAL and NTSC.
Maybe Sega asked them to call him that at first
Well this was the last game of the Classic Era maybe they wanted to supplement people's head with his name before the formal rename in the next game.

BlackDot You actually want less things to collect? Sonic R was already lacking in content and you want less? No. More is better.
@@chaocobojun2098 When the game has a set amount of laps, where you must collect 9 coin and get between 1st and 3rd place with god awful controls, I'd rather have less to collect. Instead of just stuffing more collectables into the levels, they should of just added more levels.

Am I the only person amazed that he controlled the character so good?
He's likely using the 3D control pad, and besides, most people don't know that you can use the R and L buttons to corner easier.

Sonic's stuck in second gear almost the entire game. It's like they said to him to fucking cool it or they won't participate.

How does it control? I ask this because the gameplay looks better than what I typically see of this game, so either you guys are just pro sonic r players or it controls better than the final game. I’ve never actually played the final game so I could be wrong.
