  • I set out to build the galley but a change of direction came when some new ply came in to the local timber yard.

    Putting those panels up has made such a difference to the boat, the pattern will look good after it has been varnished

      Yeah it’s lovely. I’m always seeing new shapes and patterns within the grain. I’m well chuffed. Just walked 4 more boards on to the boat so will try to get the lions share if the uppers walls done today

    Danish oil might be nice, instead of varnish and very easy to apply.
    It makes so much difference to the boat with those boards up. Looking really nice. 😊😊

    I wouldn’t varnish I would wax the beech, I think it will look brilliant with the beech on top and a light colour painted on the lower half. The beech will give a nice warmth to the space. Great work James and massive thank you to Marlon for just being a top mate 🤗

      Birch not beech 🙂
      But I agree, hardwax oil is the way to go.

    Amazing how much getting those up transforms the interior. Scandinavian style white wash stain under varnish might be good to keep it light and get the grain standing out.

    Really looking nice with 3 panels up so cant wait to see the entire boat decked out. It might be worth trying out a few different methods to treat the ply using the off coats, just to see what you prefer before fully commiting.

      I wondered if using that white dye stain stuff would look good, still get the woodgrain but with a white wash type of thing? Although with the varnish it would be more 'user' friendly in regards to wipe clean type of thing. Not Got a boat (yet), sheet at DIY and probably talk rubbish, but had kids lol.

    Don’t use varnish, use something like Osmo oil, easier to apply & looks much better than outdated varnish👌

      Exactly what I was going to say!! Gives a much more attractive finish 😊From what I understand (via pethericks) it is also hard-wearing and water resistant. 🤔

    Maybe an oil or wax instead of varnish? I've done enough to hate it, so it might be me...every speck of dust shows up as a blemish, and it's horrible to keep it looking nice...it's looking nice all up, great job!

    Do you plan to add any mushroom vents? I saw you had some lights up too on the ceiling. That is definitely the way to go with wiring in the conduit. That way you can always pull new wires through if you need to. I was also wondering about doing a hard wax finish on the wood instead of a varnish. The hard wax will make it look nice and also seal it from moisture. Really nice progress and I hope you had a good time off from making videos with the kids.

    If you put painters tape on the ply and mark your line on that when you cut it will reduce splintering.

    Nice job James !!!well done getting winsow holes spot on !!!
    Hey I'd you wanted a colour rather than varnish .... just slowly add thinner to a premix gloss colour ,
    Test each time you thin on scrap wood .... till it soaks into wood standing grain out still !!!
    Enjoyed this vid ,the guitar solo was nice too @!

    Just use downward cutting Jigsaw Blades and then there are no dodgy splinter bits they will be on the inside or use Blue Tape stuck on the Board then mark it out and cut through the Tape and No splintering then

    You and Marlon make a great team! That birch ply is lovely. When you're ready to varnish, think about a water-based polycrylic, which will keep the wood's color and won't yellow like an oil-based product, (unless you need an oil-based marine varnish due to being on the water?) You seem more cheerful today--I hope it means everything is going well; it's good to see.

    One other question, I have wondered if you were ever thinking about adding the second alternator onto the propulsion engine to help charge batteries? I have seen many boatbuilders of various kinds of boats do this and it has seemingly worked out extremely well for them.

  • @DavidBriggsAdventures
    @DavidBriggsAdventures 10 місяців тому +1

    There are several attractive stain ideas. Being a diy guy, you may think of methods of natural stain production. Myrtle stain is pretty and just requires myrtle nut husks , or black walnut that needs a small grocery bag of nuts to make gallons of stain. a charity shop stock pot and some linseed oil are your only needed purchases to get a truly expensive finish. The cost of those finishes comes down to learned skills. You can get really posh with a cheap bottle of cognac and a bag of shellac chips. French polish sounds posh bot thats all it is. You can literally save hundreds of pounds with a few old and never changed stain recipes.

    • @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
      @TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt  10 місяців тому +2

      Right I’ve screen grabbed this comment because either you’re a genius who’s going to save me hundreds of pounds on fancy yacht varnish - or in hindsight you’re the one who encouraged me to rub all kinds of homemade witchcraft solutions onto my new lovely beech !!!
      I’ll investigate - but if you’re right….thanks

    • @DavidBriggsAdventures
      @DavidBriggsAdventures 10 місяців тому +1

      @@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt I want to point out that before I was at CIA, I worked with my father reproducing furniture. The book we got our stain and finish recipes from was printed in 1793. I have personally made the black walnut stain from gathering fallen nuts . We put the whole nuts in a stock pot boiling them down nearle completely for several reductions . Refill the pot to desired volume and bring to full rolling boil before turning off. strain through a bag. A charity shop pillow case does the same as a filter bag. Follow fabric stripping laundry practice if you have concerns. The resultant mixture is strained, cooled, and imparted with isopropyl or denatured alcohol to provide saturating and evaporative properties. The shellac recipe ferrred to the stradivarius violin finis recipe. Cognac was used to dissolve shelac chips to give that beautiful musical instrument finish. I offered these ideas to give you a few ideas to feed your musical and creative traits. Much love mate ;)

    If your cutting from the finished side and want to minimize chipping, there is something called a “laminate bade” to use on plywood. The teeth cut downward rather than up. A bit of practice to understand the dynamics of the cut before using it on your finished piece should show if this a solution.
