Knitting Help - Slow Motion Provisional Cast-On

  • Provisional cast-ons are a way to create a cast-on that can be removed later, leaving you with live stitches. This video just demonstrates working the provisional cast-on. The next steps after the cast-on should be explained in your pattern. (Like what to knit next, when to remove the provisional cast-on, etc.) If you are unclear about what to do next, please contact the pattern designer for clarity.
The yarn I use for demonstration is Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Chunky.
The other videos in my slo-mo series can be found here:
    • Slow-Motion Techniques
The crochet hook I use is by Boye, the needle is a Knitter's Pride Ginger double-pointed needle from a set:

This video was the beginning of me finally having success with the cuff for the February Hat. The first two times I tried by making a chain and picking up the spine loops (something I did before with a sweater and it worked) I could not get those stitches on the other needles. This created large enough loops in the active knitting to pick up & the scrap yarn easy to remove. Thank you so much.

Okay, I have a question, if anyone knows the answer. When I knit cuff down socks I always just go ahead and start knitting and use the beginning of the sock as my gauge swatch so I can see what the actual gauge will be like in the pattern and in the round. Sometimes I get lucky and my gauge is spot on and I can just keep working on the sock, sometimes not. I'd rather not work the ribbed cuff until I know for certain my gauge is right, so could I start with the provisional cast on, begin the leg pattern straight away, and if that gauge is good I can go back and pick up the provisional stitches and knit the ribbed cuff after finishing the sock? I've never done the provisional cast on so I'm not entirely certain if this would be possible.

  • @idafc

Could you do a video on the pros and cons of the techniques used for addressing the stitch that gets lost when you unzip the chain? In the pattern I’m working on, you pick up stitches from the PCO to knit them together with the bottom edge of the fabric to create a waistband, which you then work to knit the rest of the garment. The issue is that after unzipping the chain, the top edge will have one less stitch than the bottom edge, leaving one stitch that doesn’t knitted together with another. Thanks in advance!

You unzip from the non-slip knot end...but your pattern should make the details clear so that you're set up properly for the next row. I used your method for a provisional cast on, but when I tried to pull out the “chain” to use the stitches it didn’t just pull out. I had to unwrap each stitch individually. I started on the right end, the end without the knot. I’ve watched this again to see if I did the provisional wrong, but I did it just the way you describe in your video. I crochet a lot, so I am comfortable with a crochet hook. Any suggestions?
