  • Among foreign observers, seventeenth-century England was known as ‘Devil-Land’: a diabolical country of fallen angels, torn apart by seditious rebellion, religious extremism and royal collapse. Watch Dr Clare Jackson (Senior Tutor and Fellow) talk to broadcaster Andrew Marr (Trinity Hall alumnus 1977) about her latest book: 'Devil-Land: England under siege 1588-1688' - a ground-breaking portrait of the most turbulent century in English history.
Dr Jackson’s dazzling, original account of English history’s most turbulent and radical era tells the story of a nation in a state of near continual crisis. Devil-Land reveals England as, in many ways, a ‘failed state’: endemically unstable and rocked by devastating events from the Gunpowder Plot to the Great Fire of London. Catastrophe nevertheless bred creativity, and Jackson makes brilliant use of eyewitness accounts - many penned by stupefied foreigners - to dramatize her great story. Named as a ‘Book of the Year 2021’ by the New Statesman, Times Literary Supplement, The Daily Telegraph and The Times, Devil-Land provides a spectacular reinterpretation of England’s vexed and enthralling past.
Trinity Hall was pleased to partner with the University of Cambridge Centre for Geopolitics on this event. Dr Clare Jackson (Senior Tutor and Fellow) talks to Andrew Marr (1977) about her latest book: Devil-Land: England under siege 1588-1688 - a ground-breaking portrait of the most turbulent century in English history.

I wasn’t there but I have been lucky enough to get hold of a copy of Devil-Land and am enjoying reading it beyond measure so good it is. Very strongly recommended for anyone’s library and intellectual delectation.
