Very nice, I have made a few pipes over the years, for myself and others. But not for a long time, I am not to stand for long, miss it though. I also flattened the bottoms so wouldn't roll about. Great work.

Such an amazing work of art on a difficult true classic design! The ambient sounds far exceed any shite background music thanks! Truly beautiful sir!🙏🙏😘
Thank u so much for doing these videos. I just started making pipes and I’ve learned alot from watching u and many others on youtube...Your pipes are amazing, hopefully one day I will be on your level...Thanks once again and have a great day....👍🏻✌🏻🤙🏻
I got into making pipes about a year ago. they are still slightly crude because I have no lathe, only a sander and drill press but I make it work. This pipe is beautiful though
@@maggs131 I'm afraid I disagree. Yes, you can make pipes without a lathe. Any experienced pipemaker would be able to make most shapes without a lathe. It would simply take much longer. However, there's not a single fulltime pipemaker that I know that doesn't use a lathe, nearly all of which are metal lathes. The fact of the matter is, lathes make pipemaking a LOT easier and it's not even about shaping the pipe, which is almost always done largely on a sanding disk. It's about drilling your holes exactly where you need them and being able to perfectly face a surface perpendicular to a drilled hole. Without a lathe, making a pipe with a flush stem without any light gaps is an absolute nightmare. With a lathe it's pretty easy. Finally, details like the ring on a bulldog are nearly impossible to do without a lathe.
Greetings. sincere compliments for your magnificent pipes! they're really beautiful. but is a normal wood lathe suitable for making them? I'm talking about the home hobby ones. I would like to know if it was possible. A thousand thanks a warm greeting.
I noticed that you used home made woodturning tools from chisels. Is this something that you would recommend for the beginner ? Are they as good as the much more expensive stainless steel tools ?
I wouldn't even call them "homemade", they're simple wood chisels that I use on my metal lathe, ground to a profile I like. The round one I use is actually bent from use because it's not made for this, and I really should replace them with some decent tools... So no, I would definitely NOT recommend this. Buy a set of decent quality small woodturning chisels. If you don't have any experience in cutting techniques, opt for ones that have carbide tips. Something like the Easy Wood Tools Easy Start finisher would be very useful in the hands of a beginner.
This is a rod of ivory coloured acrylic. Most pipemaking suppliers should have something similar in stock. In the USA, your best bet will be Vermont Freehand.
I started with a 1 hp, 1750 rpm. These are 2hp 1750 rpm 400V. I found both of them in a yard sale in my street for €12.5 each!! Other than that it's just a drill chuck with a hook & loop pad mounted in it :-)

Your best bet is signing up to my newsletter at www.massispipes.com The 'default' finish for a pipe is sand to 400grit, stain black, sand 600, stain topcolour, buff with tripoli paste, polish with white diamond paste and finish with carnauba. (going off google translate here) Sandblasting is done with a sandblasting medium. There are many different types of media used in sandblasting, such as glass bead, walnut shell, corund, aluminium oxide, ... Different materials in different coarseness give different blasting results.
When you have an expensive pipe you can talk about it by name, but when you get a no name cheap pipe, well, it fits in your hand nice and it burns for an hour or so. What else can ya say?
Honestly I've had many very long conversations about cheap,no name pipes. I've also heard of many cheap named pipes as well as VERY expensive no name pipes...
The white material is an imitation ivory made from acrylic. It's perfectly safe to use for pipes. It's the same compound almost every acrylic pipe stem is made from.
I happen to be the lucky and very happy owner of this wonderful masterpiece. Thanks once again Nick!
My pleasure, I hope this pipe will provide you with many more years of smoking pleasure!

A metal lathe makes a lot of things easier and faster, but you can surely do it on a regular wood lathe or even without a lathe altogether!

Nice video and nice pipe too brother! Btw, what kind chuck is that you use for shaping pipe? And where to buy it?
It's a Oneway woodturners chuck with custom jaws. You can get the jaws at VermontFreehand.com

What is the material of the pipe stem?
In this case it's acrylic rod, but usually I use ebonite.

Гарний бульдожек.
What do you buff with after the staining?
Usually the basic setup: tripoli compound and then white diamond compound

If you want to make anything decent, the only answer is briar, from the root burls of Erica Arborea.
Not being rude but about how much $ does something like this cost?
Prices vary quite a bit based on design complexity and quality of the wood. My current commissions start around 300USD.

La boquilla es de teflon
Actually the tenon is integral to the stem which in this case made from acrylic if I remember correctly.
