Cessna Citation Bravo Landing SUS, Vectors Through the Localizer

  • Cessna Citation Bravo landing at the Spirit of St. Louis airport. The weather was marginal and we were told to expect the ILS to 26L. We set the approach up but, with 5 statute miles of visibility and a 2,000 to 2,400 ft. ceiling we expected to see the runway and be cleared for a visual approach shortly after intercepting the localizer and tracking inbound. On our base leg it becomes evident that we’ll fly through the localizer and as I’m about to query ATC about a heading change approach control gives us a vector to re intercept. This video has lots of Air Traffic control radio communications and a good view of the cockpit.

    Another nice episode Jim. I do like the quick flash look at the approach plate, for orientation. Yep, as you anticipated, it is always good to give the guy a call, just in case he has forgotten to give you the turn on heading to capture the localiser. Or, he intended you to go through it but didn't let you know, or didn't have time.

      5BASSIP Thanks Bassip. I always appreciate your watching. Yep your right. Some times things don't go according to the plan.

    Captain M. You guys must have "Chuck Yeager Eyes" - I couldn't find the field until coming down final. :) Nice video, thanks. Really smooth control manipulation from the guy in the left seat during the landing phase. I never got that conquered.

      Thanks. It was hazy but, it's much easier to pick out in real life.

    Really great vid. I liked the 'dashcam' shot. Too bad the electronic instruments have so much shutter effect, it was cool to watch the movement on the PNI as you tried to capture the localizer...

      david barker Thanks David. I know there's an answer to the flicker problem. I just hope it's not super expensive. New aircraft use the flat panel displays and the tubes the encore uses for the PFD's aren't even made anymore. Day by day the problem is being slowly resolved through attrition..

    I’m sorry guys...thought the CRM was kinda lame. Snuck an approach in the box and didn’t tell you? Not Cross checking altitude clearances? Maybe I’m too nit picky

    I don't own a GoPro, so I'm going to ask. Does the GoPro Hero 3 give you options to set shutter speed? As a DSLR user, when recording video, I always set the shutter speed 2x the FPS to deal with motion.

    Very nice! Although the camera effect on your instruments could drive someone to drink. So I will ;-)

      That segment was where we hit turbulence as we were climbing through.

    Love this video! How do you go about capturing the audio? I use a few plugs into a mic jack.

    • @captmoonbeam
      @captmoonbeam  9 років тому

      Andy Danas Hi Andy. I use a Y cable that splits the headset audio and then plug in a digital recorder to capture the audio. This only captures what we hear over the intercom and radio transmissions. I then combine that audio track with the camera audio track to add the engine sound.

    I have noticed on the Cessna Citation the LCD displays on the instrument panel keep flickering. I would find that to be an annoyance but I guess it is part of flying a Citation!

    • @captmoonbeam
      @captmoonbeam  7 років тому +2

      The displays are actually CRT's and have a different sync rate than the camera. That's why they flicker in the video but not in real life,

      I have noticed that quirk on several videos and questioned it. Thanks much for the answer and look forward to your next video, Captain!

      I wonder if an ND filter on the camera would help. Gets the prop flicker out of my videos.

    Whoever installed that handle in the windshield did it upside down, longest part goes down. Makes you wonder what else this maintenance guys got wrong doesn't it? They obviously don't care much for service documentation as it is clearly shown there right side up!

      Our eyeballs have about 130 million pixels and this camera probably has about 10 million. Everything we see connects almost immediately to our ability to recognise, and so a pilot will see a runway you can't see on video because of his eyes' superior resolution, and his ability to recognise very quickly an object that is much clearer to him but not very clear to you seeing through the lens of the camera.
