The biggest secret to getting a shirt that stays tucked in all day is to have a shirt that fits you properly. More specifically, you have to look at the following things.
1. Get long shirt tails
Dress shirts are traditionally longer in the back and in the front but shorter on the sides so there's not too much excess fabric.
2. Small tight armholes
2. Small, tight armholes.
The proper fit of an armhole is relatively tight; that means there's not much excess fabric around your armpit and your shoulders. It fits very close.
3. Sleeves
Right now, it's very popular to have slim sleeves and that's okay but you should always make sure to have a little bit of fabric in the top part around your biceps.
For classic evening shirts, back in the day, men wore a bib insert that was either starched or marcella. They were quite stiff and so when people would sit or dance, they needed a little latch on the shirt that was able to be buttoned into the pants and that way, it would not move at all, all night. Unlike shirt garters, you can easily undo that very quickly, you don't notice it and it really serves the proper purpose of not having your shirt come undone or move around because it's connected to the pants.
If you have a body that's symmetrical or if you have issues with getting your shirt untucked, I suggest you invest in a custom shirt because you can really make sure that you get a tight armhole, that you can get a fitted shirt and you get the extra amount in your sleeve that is not too wide.
If you still want shirt stays for nostalgic reasons, try these.

The part about the date and shirt garders was hilarious.
Finally someone who is not talking about shirt stays!
I was actually always wondering why everybody had such a problem with their dress shirts getting untucked. I never really had that problem, because I made sure that I got the perfect fit. I actually can't remember the last time, my shirt got fully untucked.
Great video!
Thanks!
lol the date part is the best part of this video.
Wait babe....let me get this off....snap....Owwww!!
Before watching I thought that you meant the release date. I was rather confused.
It’s for service members and people who work all day shirt stays are a the best option by far
You are undoubtedly the best when it comes to teaching mens fashion. The time and effort you put into research and then the way you explain them in such minute detail is simply superb! I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos man. I hope more and more people subscribe to your channel because what you talk about is pure gold. Keep doing the good work 👍
Thanks!
when you mentioned the armholes the X-files theme song started playing in my mind. It seems to me that unlike other style bloggers (*cough alpham *cough tmf *cough rmrs) you're not just advertising products but actually know all there is to know about men's clothing.
Mate, earning money is not a bad thing, and I think you can still be objective even if someone pays you for it. Think about a sponsorship as a compensation for one's time. We have our own brand and do not rely on sponsorships and if we are not 100% convinced, we do not promote a product or service. That being said, others may not have that income and most UA-cam viewers do not donate money and making videos is expensive. Respect and likes are great and we appreciate it but they don't pay the bills. ;) So, if you like our videos, the best way to support us is to buy from our shop. If you can't do that, that's ok but maybe you can tell others about us and help spread the word, thank you Mate!
Thanks for replying to my comment. The fact remains the same, I find your videos to have higher quality than other style-bloggers'. And also advertising and mens's clothing/lifestyle consultation for example are not the same things and It's my opinion that one have to be honest about the content of one's content. If what a youtuber mostly does is advertising than the youtuber should admit that the youtuber is an advertiser, no less no more. That's all I have to say about that.
Máté Dobra agree...
You got a good laugh mentioning the crucial moment of the date 😂
For the guys who are wanting to up their style game, but can't afford $100s of dollars per clothing item, here's a pro-tip: Find a good working used sewing machine from the 1960's and learn how to use it. Then look for shirts at Goodwill or other thrift shops, but be REALLY selective. Then use UA-cam to learn how to very easily tailor the upper arm and sides of the shirt in for a closer fit. Once you are really confident with the machine, you can start to make stuff too, like vests or bow ties. I love my old Singer 237. It's a high precision power tool, and what guy doesn't love power tools!!
Great video, now I can finally relax without having the worry to tuck in my shirt multiple times!
Having just purchased my first made-to-measure shirt, I find that everything in this video is very true! However, I do think using shirt stays is an excellent way to alleviate the untucking problem until I upgrade my wardrobe to made-to-measure.
Alpha, RMRS, TMF and this channel are all very entertaining and helpful. Thanks.
I always enjoy your videos. Great insight into how we are thinking about shirting!
Great video. Straight to the point and no bullshit.
So many valuable lessons here! Thank you.
Ive been looking for this video for so long. Out of all your videos, i think every man needs to watch this
Thank you for all those videos, you made someone who wouldn't give two cents about his looks take it more seriously!
He's teaching me everything that my father haven't.
Thanks Raphael, you're my favorite fashion youtuber.
Thanks.
Hello Raphael. Thank you very much for posting your videos, they are very educational and enlightening to those who wish to dress and behave like gentlemen. This video about keeping shirts tucked in is brilliant and I want to ask if you would ever do a video on the different methods of keeping trousers up, specifically the use of belts, braces, or adjusters and possibly discussing their pros and cons. I think you would be the perfect man for this dicussion. I would really appreciate such a video. Again, thanks for you hard work and kind attention.
Great advice. Thanks for the video.
Great video. Very informative.
Thank you Sir! Great instruction and advice.
Thank you so much for this great video. You answered so many of my questions. You're a great teacher and you're chanel is very informative.
You are welcome.
Good one. You provided me an alternative perspective on the real cause
Great video and I loved the post-date scenario!
Great video, could you make a video about wax jackets and coats perhaps?
Amazing video, great content and information.
Thank you for your kind words.
I wish I saw this video back in USMC bootcamp. When we were told to wear our one of our dress uniform, they told us to use shirt stays. It had a nice look, but very uncomfortable for me mobility-wise and when it popped off, very painful. Lol. Thank you.
Thank you very much indeed!
That shirt is amazing
GENIUS!!!!
Finally useful information for men who desire to be classy
Thanks
The part regarding shirt latches being used back then was very interesting!
Can't say I agree with that, my trusty shirt garthers have always been my go to
I noticed this when I bought a Milano fit from Brooks it's crazy how good they fit me
I know I've asked before, but can you do a wardrobe/closet tour? PPPPPLLLLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEEEE!!! Thank so much for, again, another great video
This is a very educative video! I agree with your analysis: slim body, small armhole, big sleeve. But you often have to go to bespoke or very high end shirts (as attaching a big sleeve into a small armhole is tricky). I feel shirt stays are over killed. A simple and cheap fix I use is 2 rubber strips inside the trousers band. It's quite effective, even though not really solves the problem completely.
Thank you for sharing!
In my view, it's a bit sad how little people have watched this video compared to the ones that talk about shirt stays. I have to say, this is a great and even entertaining video, Raphael! Greetings from Deutschland.
Anybody who has a good fitting shirt already knows this, it is a shame that other youtubers promoted those funny things in your socks instead of telling the truth.
I use shirt stays and Im very pleased with them :)
Make the shirt look a million dollars ;)
Is it possible to see buttons in the lining of the trousers and make buttonholes in the shirt and fastened it that way. Basically the same way you use suspenders.
I love that knot. What is it?
Hello Raphael, nice video. Are there any chance that you can make a series about sweaters? like V neck, crew neck, turtle neck etc. Anyways I appreciate your work and I wish you the best.
Hello Lake, this might help:
www.gentlemansgazette.com/the-sweater-guide/?
You say for physical activities polo shirts would be more reasonable and therefore you wouldn't need shirt stays. When dancing however, I like to use them, because even though my shirts fit well they would become untucked then.
It is correct that they don't actually keep the shirt in, but pull it in again, but that's enough since you can quickly lift the waistband of your trousers after a dance and the shirt looks somewhat proper again.
Can you tour your wardrobe please??
Could you do a video on what you would pack for an extended weekend. (Small Weekender Bag)
Thanks for the suggestion. We will add it in our list.
Yes
"Crucial Part" of a date ;-)
Are Indochino custom shirts good?
There are two tips:
1. Buy the shirt from a store that is specified only to sell men suits because all the shirts are designed to be tucked in.
2. Add a two tone "elastic material" on the inner circumference of your pans. The elastic part reduces the shirt movements.
Do you know of any good online custom or MTM shirt makers?
LOL someone doesn't like shirt stays. I will say guys if shirt stays cost you action.....it's not the stays. LOL
by Kevin Samuels Facts LOL
If I saw those in real life, especially in that scenario, I would be laughing hysterically 😂
What about shirt garters that don't attach to your socks but are strapped around your thighs, or are they as equally as ineffective?
wow, sudah ada subtitle Indonesia
How, how, how does it appear that the background is moving in your videos? It's driving me insane. I must know!
Love the channel, by the way. Great stuff.
Tommy Noble noooo!!! I'd never noticed that before. Once it has been seen it can't be unseen...
I don't think you've ever worn shirt stays, because if you did you would know that they don't show through your pants.
MG it only shows through thin fabric
I have a customer who is a cop, and his pants aren’t thin and you can easily see the shirt stays.
I have to make speeches very often. So when I talk I move around very often with my arms. I have to use shirt suspenders, there is no other way even if my shirt fits very good.
What are your field of expertise, if you don't mind me asking? @Arthur Eschwald
What's wrong with shirt stays? I used it in the military and it works great. All branches use them.
Thanks. Next time I buy shirts I'll pay attention to the cut of the armholes.
Ok,and what about that clean look, without the muffing top, cause always when I wear shirts I dont have a problem with untucking but except for one,all of them look less than decent due to the muffin top,and the lack of cleanness,is there any kind of solution to that except getting them to a tailor?
Andrei Florea shirt stays
So basically what you say is that I have to buy only custom made shirts, because the of the rack ones are made for supraponderal people?
I'm also doing social dancing as a hobby, I'm moving a lot, and you said they are not for "workout", but dancing includes moving a lot, and yet you still want to look elegant.
I like the channel and speaker. He kind of sounds like Stewie from Family Guy
what about with no socks because I wana rock no socks with shoes with a pinroll :/
I got.long shirts but they come untucked.
I've seen 2 different videos say that about when you get to the bedroom with the lady. If you're already pulling your pants off the shirt stays aren't going to make a damn bit of difference.
what's a great dress shirt brand
Ron DS Turnbull & asser and Kiton if you want the best.
If you're just searching for the highest quality available, T&A, Kiton, and Isaia come to mind. For the best OTR fit, I've found Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren Purple Label to be absolutely flawless.
kiton ,brioni,stefano ricci,emernegildo Zegna,pal zileri,,eton ,armani
X wrinkles?
"The most crucial part"
I get my dress shirts tapered
The shirt comes undone either way, even sitting down on a chair will cause it to slip up an inch every time you sit. Just get used to tuck it back in regularly.
Is it possible to have small armholes but very wide sleeves?
Yes
Gentleman's Gazette thank you very much
I just staple the shirt to the pants.
Wait wait did he just make a video that was actually helpful and didn't try to sell me something? Why did I even waste time watching teachingmensfasion's video???
Luckily my tailor makes my short with an allowance to cover my beer belly
I always get those 15 dollar pants garters from men's wearhouse. u clip one to ur sock and one to ur shirt tail--- it keeps your shirt from muffin-topping and your socks pulled up. If you're on a date and a woman is that offended by shirt garters, maybe it's just her.
So basicly, buy custom shirt :)
not really, you just have to experiment with different brand. I found my perfect fit on Kamakura shirt. you should try it.
James Tu Interesting. I tried Kamakura and found them to be too baggy when I went to my proper collar size.
yeah, exactly, this is no telling of how to fix the problem, just "change your whole wardrobe"
I had no issues with shirts when I was in my 20s. I’m 68 now. As you age, your body changes. The only way I could get a good shirt fit is to go custom. That’s simply unaffordable.
Until I hit my ideal weight, I’m sticking with shirt stays. I’ll let you know how that works out.
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I tried it but it dosent work, we really need shirt stays! NOT FOR YOU
Haha, something as ridiculous as shirt sock garters.
I mean, sure, a fit shirt won't get untucked, but what if you're stuck with shirts that are not necesarilly fit to your body? like you got them from someone else? This is not a secret or a how to, this is just a person which is saying mostly "there's no way your shirt won't come untucked, just by several fit ones and you're set. Im not going to renew my whole wardrobe just for this.
I would feel uncomfortable if my shirt was that snug to my armpit.
I like the video and l respect ur opinion. However, that doesnt fix muffin top because when u stand 50 times from ur desk or go outa ur car 15 time a day ur shit will rise outa the pants. So, shirt stay prevent that and believe me you will love them for life #shirtstayskeepsutucked
You look like a italian mafioso. I like you
This doesnt help those of us forced to wear ill fitting uniforms. Im getting garters.
alterations/get one that fits
Even proper fitting shirts comes untucked very easily
da trägt aber jemand nen ziemlichen rettungsring.....
I have never in my life seen or heard of a shirt garter, that’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever
You don't have to worry about keeping it tucked in if you don't tuck it in the first place
i dont own a dress shirt just a shirt
The shirt garter is the reason I unsubscribed from real men real style. He not only pretended to be someone who uses them, but then tried to sell them. They really are ridiculous.
