Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Painting Iron Man Armor!

  • What is Adam's favorite part of making? The paint, of course! Wanting a beaten-up, shiny metal finish for his Iron Man Mark I suit, Adam applies a gloss black undercoat, adds liquid chrome, then seals it all with a clear coat. But the job's only half done; Adam needs to wait a week for the paint to cure before he can start weathering (which will be another One Day Build)!

I've tried basically every kind, the medical kind, nail polish shakers etc. a jigsaw can't be beaten and all you have to do is grind down the bar of the clamp to fit!! If ever there was a tool tip/ an actual one-day build it's this.

I've been doing a lot of scratch build model making lately, and I'm looking forward (also dreading) the detail work. Since I do all my models from scratch mostly, I'm going to be doing all the detail work by hand; old school, no 3D printing and no printed decals. You should really consider investigating a newer method of chipping done by modellers, you use hairspray as an intermediate between your base and final layers, and use water to wear the paint away to form your chipping patterns, very flexible in how little or how much you take off. Only thing is you'd probably need to use tamiyas acrylics not rattle cans. May be too much time considerations, but the fidelity it grants you is amazing.

9:17 There is something called a Vortex mixer which is primarily used for test tubes but work great for mixing paints. I use a cheap nail artist one for about 40 - 50 dollars for one for mixing my miniature paiting paints.

It would have been super awesome to make the gears/belt for the leg joints actually move. Like cut the plastic molded ones off and replace them with a real gear and belt assembly.

I spray Molotow chrome ink all the time and never thought of using lacquer thinner. Great idea, will give it a try next time.
