I made my water bottle holder to fit a 1l soda bottle. Took the sleeve from an old leather jacket, closed the bottom, and made the top a leather cone. Then decorated it to look like a garden gnome. I literally made it my drinking buddy.
That picture is actually the Doran water bottle from medieval collectibles, it has plastic on the inside I believe. Definitely cool to see somebody making a recreation
@@fauxmarmorer9544 on the one I got from medieval collectibles the leather around the bottle seems good, but the strap is almost seemingly too thin. Makes me nervous that it’s going to snap. The plastic bottles they use crackle … LOUDLY … so if you even barely squeeze the bottle as you grab it to drink it definitely is an embarrassing experience. Also, the cork just loves to pop out and spill my drink all over my side as I move. This video gives me good solutions. Glass or stronger plastic for the bottle, and a screw cap instead of a cork (I role-play fantasy so historically accurate is not a factor for me).
I need to start doing that. I have a spice blend I love, but have to make myself (taken from the Black Spire Cookbook), and the small bottles from McCormic are not enough.
These are so cool! I needed a way to carry water that was still in-character for a fantasy Dragon Con costume, so I ended up cobbling together a "waterskin." I found a collapsible water "bottle" (more like a plastic pouch with a pop-top), then went to Goodwill and picked up a purse with a kind of blue-grey faux leather look and took that apart to make a cover for the water bottle. Cleaned up a wooden candle cup from the craft store with some cutting board wax to cover the pop-top, and had myself an in-character waterskin I could use at the con.
I do a lot of medieval camping events and some I'd really like, is a way to take a bath. I need some sort of collapsible bathtub. I don't trust the inflatable kind for camping environments. Maybe someone Clev3r could figure it out 😁
OLD Leather Smith here, I like it, great job on both. I save bottles 2 now I know what 2 do with them, I will do what U did and make some changes and give them 2 friends. Again GREAT JOB. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️🥎🙃
So...I'm not the only one who gets a Brilliant Idea at an hour most sane people are sleeping, and just have to do it right exactly NOW? Good to know. Years ago I took scraps of different types and colors of leather and glued them to a plastic water bottle with E6000. Even covered the cap. Ended up with a really cool patchwork bottle; I fill it and freeze it the night before, and always have cold water at the ren fair (or at work). I even rigged up a simple "holster" for it. However these two designs give me ideas for disguising larger bottles, like the stainless steel sports bottles. Hmm...
Suggestion for the bottom of the green one! Punch a bunch of really small holes along the bottom, and tie some 2 or 3mm thick leather cord through them to make a sort of spiderweb net on the bottom. I know from practice that wetmolded items will dramatically loosen over time. My knife ended up on the floor *a lot* after a few months with my first sheath...
Congratulations, you reinvented cuir boullee aka “boiled leather”! The first bottle is effectively locked in because of the bulge in the neck- if that leather properly hardened the bottle can’t fall out. If you feel the need for extra confidence just punch holes in the bottom of the leather and weave some leather lacing into a sort of net t hold the bottom of the bottle but it should work as is just fine. The hold-down for the wine bottle is extra clever. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. It’s a positive way to secure the bottle while carrying it that still makes it super easy to replace. Could that work as a “peace strap” for a sword?
I need to make one of these for the next time I go to the next local ren faire. There's a popular booth that sells homemade root beer, and although the bottles are beautiful, they're a pain to carry around.
WOW! This saves me a LOT of headache... I have my favorite bottle, but it looks WAY out of place... This means I can use my favorite bottle and it won't look out of place. Very clever, Cl3ver!
These are truly cool! Carrying water at a LARP is always a challenge. Maybe add some padding, like a strip of fabric, under the rivets so they don't damage the glass. I'm a little worried the bottle might shatter or break because of the metal pressing, rubbing and clicking against it.
That are some realy nice projects I have to try for my self. May I suggest splicing the rope and running it back through the upper rings, I think the bottle will hang better then.
for the square base bottles, you can do a two straps that would hold the edges and can meet up at the neck and be connected together. sewing would make it look good and add in an iron ring to loop it on to stuff.
For the bottle that has it the leather all around it, what about instead of doing a full leather bottom, you could thread a needle and do a very simple cross design on the bottom so it has no chance of slipping out. That would also make it so you can still see inside the bottle to see if you ever need to wash it out or how much water you have left within it and keeps the bottle from falling out by accident.
You could put a strap across the open bottom that way it won’t fall out. Or if you absolutely had to replace or clean the bottle, you could undo the strap and take the bottle out.
I would recommend adding a bottom part to the leather bottle, so If you fall and the bottle crashes, no shards will fall out and potentially hurt someone.
I would've trimmed the leather a bit further back from the mouth of the bottle, and finished off the edge by tying a Turks Head knot around the neck. Mostly because I just love that knot. I've used it to attach pens to a strap for my notebooks, its at the top and bottom of the grip section on my LARP bow, its how I've attached feathers claws and fangs to the top of my Druids staff.... I just think its neat!
I've made a couple of hip-flask covers before, and never been completely happy with the outcome. The plywood form is a game-changer, man. Guess what I'm doing this weekend? Thanks.
A fair number of sites will NOT allow any glass at all (land owner also runs livestock when its not rented out for events). I found 32oz/1 liter plastic Maple Syrup bottles to be a good substitute - they look like a pottery moonshine jug once you get the label off. Just find a better screw cap than the one it comes with (they used to be brown but are now bright green at Costco). Or cut off the threaded section & smooth out the inside of the cut edge (hot air gun or similar) and make a cork or wooden plug for it. Just make a leather sleeve like the second example, you may even use the neck ring to hold the carry strap rather than attaching it to the sleeve.
I have tons of bottles of all shapes and sizes. I had the thought of making a leather bottle condom for several weeks now. Methinks the project is awaiting Fun fact: Bundaberg ginger beer bottles fit *perfectly* inside of the dice bags from Critical Role. They ALSO fit a standard sized tasting cork. MEANING: you can safely and securely smuggle in 12 oz of whatever noncarbonated liquid you would like in a very discreet manner.
Have fun at the LARP! Take the experiences you gain from the trip and give us some more content to sift through. Also make sure you stay hydrated! it's surprising how often you have to remind people at these kinds of events, lol.
If you went with the version with a bottom piece, you could possibly adjust the length of the thread to account for different bottles. I would've gone with a middle ground and made holes around the bottom and threaded some thin leather through and across, holding the bottle inplace. Also the second design is great.
Slick! Nowhere NEAR first today - I was playing Fallout 4 when it dropped. 😂 Quick initial thought on a bottom for the first bottle, based on a scroll-case I bought at a renfaire 2 years ago ... cut a thin wooden disk out the same diameter as the bottle. ('D personally add a padded layer between wood and glass) Then trace & cut your wet-form plywood pieces, so as to include the wooden base. Form as shown. When finished, use furniture tacks that match your rivets to fasten the leather to the wood base.
Fantastic work, very creative ideas to for both bottle holder manufacture and design. I personally want to mame both of these for the upcoming Renisance festival
Never a bad idea to save bottles. I have a stash of St Peter's Cream Stout, Dansk Mjod mead bottles, and numerous others for the sole purpose of upcycling them into leather wrapped bottles for much the same project style. One of these days I'm gonna get a gallon jug of cheap sangria, get blitzed, and wrap that bottle. Probably poorly.
Both awesome ideas. I really like the string pulling up to hold the top down.. such an unusual idea but done so simply you make it look easy and obvious. 😂. But i must say the first bottle with the formed leather.. looked 👌. Great video guys, hope you have fun at reckoning.
I have a huge collection of bottles, too. In fact it is hard for me to let go of just about any object made of glass. I'm always sure I will use them for something someday. Also, I have been working on a design somewhat similar to the second one here, but that first one looks really nice. I might have to try that.
You could have had just one long panel of leather and when putting it into the ‘press’ you could have wrapped the leather around the bottom. One long piece of leather wrapping underneath the bottle.
Idk if you answered this in another thread or not but where do you get your leather? And what type of leather am I looking for? I kinda figured stay away from Faux Leather but I’m not sure what I actually looking for in leather itself. Also 2am woke up and started watching videos for the last hour.
You could have used grommets around the bottle and woven strings or straps all around it for extra effect. Plus, it would have been easier to weave the bottom in such a way that you could switch out the bottle with ease. Oh, one last thing... If that is going out into the field with you, and is going to see some action, I would switch the bottle out for a metal container just for safety. Trust me... landing on a bottle and it shattering suuuuucks!!!
Any suggestions for someone trying to start a youtube channel? I have this one, but honestly, it's been idle for like a decade, and I'm not really sure how to get myself to DO stuff again

A friend of mine at a larp carries their (alcoholic) character's water in a plastic(!!!) wine bottle and it's never broken once
Do the same for pints and half pints and say they're healing potions
Maybe you could crisscross some strong thread across the bottom of the green wrap through the excess leather. Like a little star of thread.
You could also dilute some glue in the hot water to add extra rigidity to the leather. 😊
