    Very helpful video! Blue is one of those colors that I tend to either over-use or under-use, and rarely get right in the first attempt at mixing. So this really helped me to better understand the qualities and properties of all these different pigments of blue. Thanks!

    I just wanted to to tell you how amazing your channel is. I started painting in acrylics last year but found myself getting extremely frustrated with the fast drying time and dissatisfied with the flat, plastic like finish. I have been researching oil paints for weeks and have learned more since finding your channel this morning than in those weeks. Thank you so much for such great and to the point information.

    I love your content and respect your talent. Recently I sought to settle the cool/warm blue debate for myself by devising a painting exercise based on the rubric, "Cool colors recede, warm colors advance." I took a 9x12 exercise board and placed it into landscape format. I then drew a vertical line at 6 inches, dividing the board in half. Then I drew a horizontal line at 4.5 inches, dividing the board into upper and lower halves. I then drew a large circle in the left half and the right half as if it were a still life of a sphere setting on a table. Now the fun begins. On one side paint the foreground "table" with UMB, and the background "wall" with TB, paint the sphere with UMB. On the other half paint the table with TB and the wall in UMB and the sphere with TB. (Make sure not to get the blues mixed or this wont work) If UMB is cool and TB is warm the half of the board painted with UMB as the wall (receding) and TB on the foreground (advancing) will look correct. If UMB is warm and TB is cool, the half of the board painted with TB as the wall (receding) and UMB on the foreground (advancing) will look correct. I believe this is a definitive proof for warm and cool blues. I would be interested in seeing your results. Thanks and keep up the great work. Check out my results at the Tom Garney Fine Art Facebook page.

    So happy to have discovered your Chanel, Jason. I'm returning to painting after many decades and there's so much to learn! your video presentations are so clarify and present a huge amount of info in an organized and interesting way. I took your suggestion on quality and ordered some Blue Ridge paints from Eric Silver. The quality is amazing and I was shocked at how reasonable the prices are for such a premium , hand mixed oil paint. It's great to support small business, too, in such a competitive market. Thanks again and I also love the longer demos like the one on pastel. More on any type of medium in a long format would be super. Oh, and the filming/editing are excellent. Snd the history of the colors rounds it all out.

    I love perusing through your older videos, so much to pull from here!
    I do not use white with anything on my canvas until the very end, after all the darker tones have been set in place, so when you say the Ultramarine is cool, I don't know what you are talking about... but then you put white in it, and I see the coolness of it. Ultramarine blue is probably my most used color, I mix it with burnt umber to get my black, which ends up being very warm indeed. The only other blue I use is quinacrine cyan, (which I believe is just like the teal you have) and it fills in all the gaps between the blues... my palette stays limited, makes my job easier! But cyan and phalo green makes the most intense greens, with a pure range of fade all the way between the two!

    No, the reason you call Ultra Marine Blue a warm blue is because it has that little bit of red. And yes, yellow is warm but green (having some blue it) makes it a cool yellow not a warm yellow. So it depends on how much warm or cool cooler is added and what colors are next to it, that determines whether it's considered warm or cool!

    • @M4th3u54ndr4d3
      @M4th3u54ndr4d3 11 місяців тому

      there is absolutely no consensus about the reddish-blues being warm or cool. In past it was generally considered warm, but today many painters are calling it cool. I tend to think that it is cool, not warm. I live in brazil and I see a lot of greenish-blue waters and sky, but never reddish-blue, which reminds me of Iceland.

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому +2

      Great question! "Hue" added to a color name means that it is an imitation of the real genuine color. So "Cadmium Red Hue" would be a paint meant to mimic real Cadmium Red made with a different pigment(s). This is most often done with colors where the real pigment is very expensive, offering a budget alternative. Sometimes they do it when the real pigment is no longer made. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks again for such a good video. Can you answer a question about Cerulean? I like it, but there seem to be two different kinds, and the prices are very different. I tried to figure out why, and it turns out that the expensive kind uses PB35, while the less expensive is PB36. Have you found that the difference matters?

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  5 місяців тому +1

      Great question! The PB35 is the true Cerulean blue made from oxides of Cobalt and Tin. The PB36 is a slightly different variant of that known as Cobalt Chromite Spinel that also contains aluminum and chromium compounds as well. It is also more greenish (slightly) than PB35 and a little more saturated. They are both excellent, lightfast colors, so you can use which ever works best for you. Thanks for watching! :)

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  15 днів тому

      Cobalt Blue is pretty neutral in mass tone, but it tends to be on the opaque side which means it won't make a super dark black. The best dark black comes from mixing Ultramarine with Burnt Sienna. You can play with the proportions a bit to get it neutral. Thanks for watching! :)

      Not even remotely close to warm. It's blue-violet and leans purple which makes it irrefutably cool. It is never used for "warm" purposes; it's used to make cool violets, to make shadows, and to cool skin tones.

    I am using Cerulean Blue to paint a bright summer sky and cannot get the value up. It looks muted ? Im using Titanium White to lighten just as you demonstrated. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! That dull quality you are seeing is actually a function of the Cerulean Blue pigment. Cerulean Blue is a form of Cobalt Blue which is considered an inorganic mineral pigment. This group also contains the cadmiums and certain other pigments. One of their defining traits is that while saturated in mass tone, they turn dull when mixed with white. The solution would be to add some Phthalo Blue to the mix (a tiny bit) to keep the color saturated if need be.

    Hey. Can you explain why for example Talens Rembrandt have Mang. blue phtalo, Phtalo blue red, Phtalo blue green, three different oil colors, and each of them have PB15? No titanium white, single pigmented. Why these different in hue? What makes them different? Seems hard to find suitable hue regarding only on pigments since the same pigment in one brand make different tint

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! :) Yes pigments can have different variations within the same family. I suspect those tubes will say something like PB15:1, PB15:3, etc. Those numbers after the colon denote the "shade" so that's where the Phthalo Blue 'Red Shade' or 'Green Shade' comes from. But they are all still Phthalo Blues.
