The AEW/CMLL partnership is so bizarre. I believe Tony is trying to undermine Konnan (the booker of AAA) because he is critical of AEW on his podcast which is incredibly petty if true.
The CMLL & AAA rivalry has always been a political mess. Both companies have exclusive rights to specific arenas across Mexico. As for Konnan, I think Tony is trying to stick it to him for the Dragon Lee incident. Tony probably threw a fit when Lee announced he was WWE bound after pinning AEW talent
For all the AEW fans that were claiming ad nauseum that they don't need sports entertainment stories and "we're all about wrestling!" Do you now see WHY you NEED competent storylines and compelling characters? Good storylines and characters lead to investment in both, leading to more interest in your product, and that leads to success. WWE is thriving because of the aforementioned, while AEW is skating by because they have good wrestling. You need MORE.
If you don't have good characters and storylines, then you don't have good wrestling. All you have at that point is dudes in their underwear flipping around.
As long as Tony is putting on shows he personally enjoys for the audience of he himself, and his dad’s money keeps flowing, he doesn’t care. That’s the problem. He’s a rich kid playing with his toys pretending it’s a business when it’s really just a vanity project or hobby.
yeah, without compelling characters and stories you have a bunch of relatively normal looking body type dudes (at least many of Tony's guys are like OC, Hook, Young Bucks, etc...) that are just throwing punches and doing flips. If you have some great storylines and bigger than life characters then the wrestling quality follows. The wrestling itself is worthless without the rest of it preceding it. No one is invested nor do they care about some average looking sweaty dudes flip-flopping in ring with nothing making it matter. Make us FEEL something Tony!
It’s why soap operas, even sitcoms get big audiences because there are characters and some form of story in every episode or between episodes. AEW is in the weird place of having nothing to offer anyone, it doesn’t have any story’s, characters and is obviously not a sport or even presented as such so no one can believe the matches have any real stakes or reason to happen either way. But clearly no one in AEW gives a shit about any of that, seeing as they’re on guaranteed money win lose or draw, no matter how much merch they sell, no matter how draws more viewers in, they are still on for silly money
Tony Khan saw those documentaries about the Herb Abrams and the Jim Crocketts and then he became the way richer version of those guys. Just a total money mark where everyone is talking behind his back about working him for money 24/7 and lying to his face.
Meltzer’s week: “Rock and HHH filmed a face to face that didn’t air.” It aired…10 years ago. “Tommy Dreamer is the new head of creative.” No he’s not. Literally reported the Rock was a work, then came back around and refuted that. Maybe David should take a break.
Dave has an amazing ability to state two polar opposites in one sentence. "Morale is at an all time high; that said, there's too many people and morale is low"
Of course he did! Had he stuck with AEW (where he got unmasked by his egomaniac brother as the show went off the air, which got ignored by the commentary team), he'd be getting a TV match maybe once every month or two. Now, with this CMLL agreement, he wouldn't even be able to get on the shows at all. On WWE he's been given a lot of TV time on both Smackdown and NXT, including title feuds.
Can we all just agree the best solution is to feature neither Mexican company's roster of indistinguishable, charisma-void, flippy guys who have absolutely no idea how to sell or tell a story?
Its the best solution if youre on national television trying to get as many people to watch as possible but thats not the case here since they arent trying to get as many people watching as possible and just cater to a certain smaller crowd and audience.
@@DaggerPrincethat's a bit hyperbole. Psychosis tore it down with Rey in the earlier days, La Parka is an absolute legend, and Ultimo Dragon was one of the best technical wrestlers among fellow luchadores. His matches with Dean Milenko were stellar! I think there's more to lucha than just one athlete. But it's all in how it's showcased.
That's an *incredibly* ignorant post, because Lucha Libre is a very different style. The reason why they seem "indistinguishable" to you is because they all wear masks and you're not that familiar with most of them yet. The masks are a tradition and a HUGE deal for them. It's part of the culture. They are "charisma-void" because they are Mexican wrestlers who do not normally wrestle here. There are several Mexican stars who have though, and many of them are over, most notably Rey Mysterio. No shit they are "flippy guys", that's Lucha Libre! Lastly, selling is not really a thing in Lucha Libre. They're not bad wrestlers, you just don't like Lucha Libre. That's okay, it's not for everyone, but you could at least be more God damn respectful!
@@JMFSpike I couldn't give one solitary shit, and neither could anyone else who doesn't invest time into lucha libre. As it is, they are unknown guys who can't work the American style, who make their opponents (the actual AEW guys) look weak, who aren't sticking around for us to care about them anyway, and are taking TV time from contracted wrestlers whom Tony should be building the company around so viewers have a reason to tune in every week. Tell me how AEW, its wrestlers, and the fans will benefit from this.
I’m still a fan of Ethan Page and I’m a big Danhausen fan, they both expressed their frustration, rightly, and are doing indies again. I feel sorry for the frustration these guys feel. The fact they can’t split the shows into divisions or leagues, just to focus on better groupings of wrestlers is insane to me. And TK needs to drop the new Japan and cmll shit, nobody cares!
The problem with Daunhausen is that while he is one of the few guys out there who did work very hard on creating his character and getting over he would still rather play with toys and action figures than be in the gym so I cant feel sorry for him there. Hes the definition of the people in the ring being the same as the fans in crowd.
@@alexmartin3143 Jim when he first saw the danhausen gimmick, thought it was thoroughly entertaining, same as Brian. Jim also explicitly said that he actively didn't want to see the guy wrestle cause it might ruin his perception of him. Looks like that happened after all.
It blows my mind how many people are on the roster and Tony still feels the need to bring outsiders in to take spots…instead of building up the homegrown.
Tony Khan saw how Vince McMahon tried to monopolize wrestling for years, and got upset because he thought that only he should be able to play with every single action figure there is.

Does anyone care about CMLL? Your own talent is getting unhappy and the new mexican guys most probably won't change the viewership numbers. So you're risking morale and riot for what exactly? Instead of bringing promotions together, he should consider bringing fans and venues together.
Tony is so obsessed with constantly bringing in random people from other promotions who have no established presence in his show, when he needs to focus on establishing and promoting his own people first. Most viewers don’t know these new people, so cannot care or be invested in what happens. It’s shocking he and others there don’t seem to understand that.
Only the hardcore lucha libre fans care about CMLL. I know CMLL definitely has lost popularity since AAA’s inception in 1992. I think no american promotion should work with either one. Working with CMLL or AAA gets you dragged into their political mess
To those that don’t know the beef between AAA and CMLL goes back to when AAA’s founder Antonio Peña was the booker for CMLL with Juan Herrera Peña introduced the mini division and wanted the main event to feature the younger talent like Konnan, Octagon and Mascara Sagrada but Juan wanted the main event to stay the same with the usual heavyweights stars like Atlantis and El Dandy eventually CMLL owner Paco Alonso chose to go with Juan so Peña left CMLL and took the young guys with him and created AAA and thus giving younger talent the main event spot talent like Konnan, Rey Mysterio jr, Psicosis, Juventud Guerrera, Súper Crazy etc. I guess you can say CMLL didn’t want to admit Peña was right so they both tend to ignore each other and don’t want their talent working the same shows
Tony Khan is Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters. Surprising number of people showed up to his party, and now they want to bail. Instead of making friends, he started a wrestling company so it could be a tax write off. He also gets generic cocaine for half the price, which is sound financial advice.
The morale can’t be anything other than poor given that hey have lost most of their drawing power, crowds are significantly down, viewing figures are down, there are way too many wrestlers on the roster and there is zero creativity or well thought out story lines. AEW really is an indie company that has no direction or story lines. Never known a company to have so many title belts. What is the point in ROH?
What Dave doesn't realize is that the AEW roster is only high level performers on this Podcast. The content that they give Jim alone gets more viewers than their entire wrestling program. You don't even have to watch AEW to follow along with their shenanigans.
I think AEW's big issue now is that the main thing people wanted from a competitor to WWE was wrestling without Vince's booking. Now that he is gone, why would anyone prefer to see a star go to the minor leagues?
Penta should definitely be ripshit about that CMLL crap. That is a huge slap in the face, and he has consistently been one of the best guys in the roster. Basically, always been over too. To get shoved into the bottom of the toy box for 3rd rate talent not a single fucking person knows in the US/Canada. Good job TK.
CMLL demanded that stipulation, because they knew they could get Tony to agree to it. The guy _does not_ consider AEW a business, and I'm just not going to hold it against him anymore. We're silly if we treat it like a real promotion.
I don't know why Tony brings up how the ratings have been "great". They have not! They've never been great or even good. Dynamite's ratings are always merely okay. The other shows can be considered okay only due to the nights they are on, but the ratings have slowly gotten worse and worse over time which is obviously bad. Anyone can look this stuff up and see for themselves. Heckel should do an art piece of Tony drowning with a speech bubble that says "I'm doing great!"
AEW'S morale is terrible their product absolutely sucks not the amount of hirings can help it's the creative plus the ratings are the lowest it's been in awhile plus wwe is on fire while aew is fucking ice cold tony doesn't have too many stars he has people nobody knows about i got a headache reading what dave meltzer said lol.
Getting paid a lot of money to not injure and maim myself sounds like a good deal to me. I get you wanna work but if youre not gonna work safe then why bother ?
I think poor Uncle Dave thinks him being the cheerleader helps the backstage morale in AEW... 🤣 Apparently, oodles of AEW talents have, again, been being very vocal about the dwindling audiences, booking, Ol An-Tony-o Khan-oki & his goofy tweets etc etc etc etc.... 🤔
Tony books for the moment/or who is the flavour of the month. No booking in advance or developing wrestlers. Malakai, jay white, keith lee, briscoe and many others who came in hot - whats their direction? What is their story?
They can all burn in Tony Khan hell they choose AEW it's their F problem in the past i came to the defense of those wrestlers because they don't have choice it's either Vince McMahon or Tony Khan and Tony seems better than Vince McMahon but now there is no Vince McMahon it's Triple H and he so much better so i don't have any sympathy for guys that choose AEW over WWE now like Mercedes and Okada and Ospreay if Tony buried them they should not complaining on Twitter
This is why I’m very nervous about Sasha Banks/Mercedes Mone going to AEW. The talent she is joining aren’t that talented, yet they think they are and will take their failures out on her simply for being there and being pushed and trying to attract more viewers to their dwindling audience. She’s a strawberry being fed to a pig, a diamond being put into mud. I get it, she wants the bag and good for her for getting it, but I have a feeling this won’t end well for her. How long before Britt Baker suddenly decides Mercedes is a threat? Or some sloppy clumsy clod like Willow Nightingale injures her (again)? As a fan of hers, I wish her nothing but success, but I have my concerns.
She’s not gonna make a difference. Doomed before even started with that womens division, but is she really even a diamond? You’re probably just gonna see the Moxley effect happen again.
The talent needs to work on getting themselves over. You cant just throw a bunch of people out there on tv and expect people to care just because they put on a great match. You need heroes and villains and a reason for people to get invested in what they are watching. They do a very poor job of defining who the heels and who the faces are. It doesnt seem to matter to them. They dont seem to understand the television and entertainment business at all. They just wanna go out there and wrassle and spam moves and get their shit in without any thought for anything else that goes on outside the ring the like trying to get your character over.
@@joegreene7619 For example who are Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta ? All I know about them is that they are good wrasslers. Tony wan Kenobi: I'm sorry Dave, for all of it....
Yeah that show sucked too
Dead and Buried 😂
"Morale is great when you consider they're not even people" lmao
Im just glad that the snowman doesnt have to fear for his life anymore lmao 🤣🤣
Have we got up to Dave thinking a clip of the Rock and Triple H from 2014 was from this week......
No we he didn't notice lol
The AEW/CMLL partnership is so bizarre. I believe Tony is trying to undermine Konnan (the booker of AAA) because he is critical of AEW on his podcast which is incredibly petty if true.
Interesting... since Tony complains about K100 criticizing AEW booking and decisions
@@moleabe92 that will be mega petty then
Everything GREAT!!!
Thanks Guys!!!!
Its fine to not need all that if you're some indie fed but if youre getting paid millions of dollars to be on national tv its not so fine.
yeah, without compelling characters and stories you have a bunch of relatively normal looking body type dudes (at least many of Tony's guys are like OC, Hook, Young Bucks, etc...) that are just throwing punches and doing flips.
"They cut the cancer out [of AEW] and realized that was the only interesting part of the patient"
Helluva line
Tony Khan saw those documentaries about the Herb Abrams and the Jim Crocketts and then he became the way richer version of those guys. Just a total money mark where everyone is talking behind his back about working him for money 24/7 and lying to his face.
Meltzer’s week:
“Rock and HHH filmed a face to face that didn’t air.”
It aired…10 years ago.
“Tommy Dreamer is the new head of creative.”
No he’s not.
Literally reported the Rock was a work, then came back around and refuted that.
Maybe David should take a break.
Or just go away
@@virgilhawkins7368 that’s definitely a better option lol
Dave is the only person to ever get CTE secondhanded.
Dave has an amazing ability to state two polar opposites in one sentence.
"Morale is at an all time high; that said, there's too many people and morale is low"
Well, with the CMLL deal it looks like Dragon Lee made the right choice not signing with AEW
On WWE he's been given a lot of TV time on both Smackdown and NXT, including title feuds.
they're worried about the wrestlers being friends when they should be worried about not selling tickets 🤦♀️
Tony's eyes and Dave's tongue are the greatest tag team in modern wrestling
The people trapped on CETI Alpha 5 with Khan in Star Trek 2 had more morale than the wrestlers trapped on AEW with Tony Khan.
Those people had a confident and charismatic leader.
THIS IS CETI ALPHA 5!
That Khan was a better leader lol
I love this community sometimes.
Every time meltzer speaks it's always incomprehensible verbal diarrhea.
Can we all just agree the best solution is to feature neither Mexican company's roster of indistinguishable, charisma-void, flippy guys who have absolutely no idea how to sell or tell a story?
Its the best solution if youre on national television trying to get as many people to watch as possible but thats not the case here since they arent trying to get as many people watching as possible and just cater to a certain smaller crowd and audience.
yeah thatd be the perfect solution. all luchadors suck. rey mysterio was the only good one. period.
So many wrestlers on AEW that should be happy they even get a paycheck.
Tony Khan is Kevin Bacon in Animal House yelling as the crowd is running past him "Remain calm, all is well."
Has Cornette said one thing remotely positive about either of those 2? They’re not saving any division…
@@alexmartin3143 Jim when he first saw the danhausen gimmick, thought it was thoroughly entertaining, same as Brian. Jim also explicitly said that he actively didn't want to see the guy wrestle cause it might ruin his perception of him. Looks like that happened after all.
Dave's writing makes my head spin.
At some point they have to say it all sucks and start over.
They are in the WCW downslide right now and it's being propped up with Tony's money idc what nobody says
I bet WWE executives and bosses are amazed that Tony Khan is spending all this money on nobody's i means multi millions deals while he is on losses no bright business man will do that only TK because he is spoiled rich kid and one day his father will cut him it's just a matter of time
WCW were at least more interesting and charming about their bullshit. AEW doesn't even have that, it's all slick tedious expensive-looking dreck.
Wcw had loads of stars and full arenas still. This is the TNA down slide.
Wardlow's morale cannot be worth a darn right now. He is 100% over being 'the enforcer' type for the cole cripples or undisputed or whatever that new faction being pushed is called. Dude literally looks like he just rolled out of bed.
And 3/5ths of that new dominant group just got beat up by pockets. So that group is done already

What I love about their podcasts is I walk away learning a new word.
I shall paraphrase T.S. Elliot and say "This is the way the AEW ends
Not with a bang but a whimper"
I guess you can say CMLL didn’t want to admit Peña was right so they both tend to ignore each other and don’t want their talent working the same shows
When are Jim & Brian gonna talk about Collision being cancelled???? I'm dying in anticipation
Tony Khan is Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters. Surprising number of people showed up to his party, and now they want to bail. Instead of making friends, he started a wrestling company so it could be a tax write off. He also gets generic cocaine for half the price, which is sound financial advice.
This is what happens when you have a fanboy run a fed.
Video should be added so we can see Jim and Brian's reactions.
They explained why they won’t do that. It would mean a more formal show, more preparation, and less of them actually feeling up to doing this.
Can’t wait for Konan to hear about CMLL deal with Tony and apparently nothing good happens on a Jericho cruise.
The Tony khan artwork has been killing me lately 😂
The artist needs a raise. 😮
“lol 😂 everyone is fine “- Tony Khan, Yeah okay lol 😂.
Everything's great!! 🛎️
"The beatings will continue until morale improves": the HMS AEW
I love how AEW is supposed to be this big deal but Tony is happy to be dictated rules by CMLL
I was watching the Dark Side of the Ring episode about Herb Abrams and the UWF. Hard to watch that and not immediately think of Tony 😂.
1:28 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 im sitting in public and just busted out laughing. Jim is comedy
We need a Dave Meltzer omnibus
It would last 6 months!!
CMLL demanded that stipulation, because they knew they could get Tony to agree to it. The guy _does not_ consider AEW a business, and I'm just not going to hold it against him anymore. We're silly if we treat it like a real promotion.
Thanks guys.
"Most of the roster are not people" Those are the truest words Dave Meltzer has ever outtered 😂😂😂
If I were on the AEW roster, I would shut up, collect my money, and invest wisely.
Getting paid a lot of money to not injure and maim myself sounds like a good deal to me. I get you wanna work but if youre not gonna work safe then why bother ?

Tony probably wasn't worried about CMLL'S stipulation since he's planning to just poach anyone they send, like with New Japan
I almost laughed out loud when Brian said "Most of the roster are not people."
That Mexican stuff makes so much sense consider what Fuego Del Sol has alluded to on his UA-cam channel
I think poor Uncle Dave thinks him being the cheerleader helps the backstage morale in AEW... 🤣
Apparently, oodles of AEW talents have, again, been being very vocal about the dwindling audiences, booking, Ol An-Tony-o Khan-oki & his goofy tweets etc etc etc etc....
Not booking your own talent because of some guys nobody knows? That's a new low.
“Most on the roster are not people.” 💀😂
This is why I’m very nervous about Sasha Banks/Mercedes Mone going to AEW.
Could all the wrestlers back stage not being used just go out and sit in the the crowd to make the audience look bigger?
This whole cmll relationship is only for Bryan Danielson to live out his dream of doing a hair vs mask match in Mexico
The whole reason they go to the AEW for the most part is because they aren't good enough to be on prime time.
Tony wants All Amigos Wrestling.
Tony just wants to buy every wrestler he can. Dudes a spoilt rich kid, still playing with action figures.
You know you can usually be very productive on cocaine don't blame coke for this guy losing his mind
When you have infinite money, quality doesn't factor in, sadly.
Dave gave AEW's morale rating 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
will be 5 if its in tokyo dome.
00:42😂😂😂True words
The talent needs to work on getting themselves over. You cant just throw a bunch of people out there on tv and expect people to care just because they put on a great match. You need heroes and villains and a reason for people to get invested in what they are watching. They do a very poor job of defining who the heels and who the faces are. It doesnt seem to matter to them. They dont seem to understand the television and entertainment business at all. They just wanna go out there and wrassle and spam moves and get their shit in without any thought for anything else that goes on outside the ring the like trying to get your character over.
Exactly this. And it’s been that way since AEW started.
If they aren't over, it isn't a great match.
@@joegreene7619 For example who are Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta ? All I know about them is that they are good wrasslers. I dont know if they are faces or heels or what their characters and personalities are like or even what they sound like. You totally failed to get me to tune in to watch these guys and give me no reason to.
Brian Pillman Jr is the best example of AEW not utilizing talent right.
His NXT run has been pretty underwhelming so far so I'm not sure if really was that underutilized. I think he may have looked good because the rest of the AEW roster was that bad.
👀 Thanks guys! ☃️
AEW has one star. One. There are a few that are older and washed and a few that are new and on the cusp.
But there is only one bonafide star in that company and he’s out injured.
