The problem is there unfortunately is a market for these dogs as fashion accessories. I have friends who have these dogs, theirs are sweet and friendly but if for some reason they ever decide not to be they can easily take out a fit, healthy, strong, young man.
In the few friends of mine who own these dogs, I think that is unlikely to ever happen to them. When it is reported in the news though, I have to wonder about the owner of those dogs. Criminal record? The persona they portray? Abusive or trained to fight? I think most of the time we're not surprised after we learn more about the owner.

In my 44 years on this blue marble, I've found that dogs are better people than most people (99.7%) are IRL. I lost my canine comrade of 12 yrs 7 months & 13 days back in March, 2022. My life is decidedly less vibrant, pleasant, full of light & love & laughter, and TBH less worthwhile, now she's not here with me anymore.
They should investigate, but we can't just assume they were fighting dogs. The main thing I took away from this is that the reporter said it happened during feeding time. That's the time when animals are most aggressive and their natural wild instincts kick in. The owner may not have been giving them enough food. So they decided to make him their meal.
Yes, I believe they were used and abused to fight. I don't believe this was a kennel that was legit to sell puppies. I believe that these were pathway full grown dogs and he was even into fight them. If you look at the dogs there's no puppies they're all big dogs

Even if he was feeding them correctly, dogs need attention and some affection so they can have relationship with their family/owner. These dogs looked happy seeing that woman jump the wall.. that’s the sad part that caught my attention. They want to be petted and played with

My dog & I , she's husky/bull mastiff , were attacked by 2 that broke through a storm door. We were dragged into a ditch (which I believe saved us) , the owner was hitting & fighting trying to get them off. My girl spent 5 days in hospital , I had many bites (including neck). I had stitches , several deep bites & was in a lot of pain for a few weeks. No Animal Control here---had to go through 11 shots , dogs weren't vaccinated & lawsuit pending. These dogs were a menace to the community a few years , killing other dogs & cats. State Farm is trying to settle for insanely low amount----I'm not giving in ! The trauma & almost losing my girl , alone , is keeping me saying 'NO' to the unjust offers !

@@Yosetime I done deposition in Nov the owners GF (had to find her) has hers in March. Once that's done , SF will make an offer---then we can 'counter offer' or request a jury trial. SF wasn't aware of the history & numerous reports , witnesses we have , added details learned in depo , when they made 1st offer---didn't even cover medical. I feel bad for the dogs. There are so many people breeding Bully breeds that the shelters are overflowing with them. Walk into any shelter and at least 25% of the dogs there are some sort of Bully breed or cross. This guy had zero business breeding them.
My animal shelter is 100% pit bulls/ other breeds like that. If they get a lab or a poodle people will be in line at 6am to adopt it after it’s published online.

The problem is not just with the breeders. It's also the buyers. It's supply and demand thing. If there's no demand, then there's no need to supply. With so many dogs in shelters, there is no need for any breeders at this point. To all those people who think it's cool to buy a pit bull puppy from a backyard breeder, you are part of the problem. Go to a shelter and get a dog who actually needs a home and not one who's background is already tainted by these sketchy breeding practices.
@Greymatter-to3thExperienced people think that: 1) most of the dogs offered at shelters are not puppies, they are adults, so the adopter isn't going to be able to provide the dog with an ideal puppyhood, that ship already sailed. Many dogs adopted from shelters didn't have an ideal beginning, so they have to have a stable enough temperament to overcome that. 2) Bullies are tenacious fighters that don't feel pain in the same way another breed does. It's easy to break up a dog fight between GSDs or labs, not so with bully breeds. 3) The elements of temperament are inherited to a large degree- a dog isn't a blank slate. When a breed is developed to fight and kill things, it's more likely to be good at those things than a breed that was bred to herd sheep, or fetch ducks, or cuddle on a lap. Any individual dog may be different and quite gentle, despite his genetic inheritance, but the adopter is running a risk. Some shelters have very competent staff who evaluate temperament of the dogs. There are bullies that aren't dog or small animal aggressive, that are docile and friendly. If it's a good shelter, the adopter may very well find a good bully there. But 'let the buyer beware' as they say. Many dogs of a year haven't yet acquired their full genetic inheritance, so they may seem more puppy like and docile than they will be as adults. A dog of 3+ years is more likely to show his actual adult personality. 4) GSDs do have a potential for aggression, but they also are very intelligent, trainable, and eager to please, so they tend to be pretty easy to manage. As long as an owner isn't an absolute bonehead, a GSD isn't going to be a neighborhood menace.

What's to investigate? The guy was backyard breeding dogs who have the potential to be deadly, especially in pack situations. He got what he asked for. Justice served. Except for the fate of the poor dogs who now have an uncertain fate. Once they've been involved in something like that, it will be difficult to adopt them out. It's not like they were nurtured or anything. They were money dogs, not pets. So sad for the dogs. Nobody is crying over the owner.

They were stuck in a back yard and not around humans much is why it happen. 95% of pits that are raised right are great loyal companions and house pets(inside house not outside) makes a big difference. My pits use to sleep in the bed with my kids. I trust them more then I trust humans.

He fainted a face bite, imagine a dog chomping directly at your face, but he reached just enough so that his teeth don't bite. It was his one and only warning. He was tough and respected and was also respectful. At family parties he would play with the kids

Those aren't pit bulls at all! They're American Bullies. Basically pit bull crossed with mastiff and other breeds to increase the size. They tend to have questionable temperament. Pure pit bulls don't have that problem with humans. They may indeed be dog aggressive but not human aggressive.

How the hell do you properly socialize, train, love, care for, play with, show attention to 13 pits? The most important part of raising one is love and attention. If you’re just breeding them for profit you’re gonna have frustrated problematic pups. Especially with a bully breed. It’s very sad what happened to the breeder but his irresponsibility plays a big part here. What a damn shame.

Absolutely. Dogs need exercise, training, affection, grooming, vet care, quality food, socialization, reasonably stimulating environment, etc. That would pretty much be a full time job with 13 dogs. These just languished in kennels.
Food is more essential! Alot of these dogs are underfed or literally starved!! It makes them viscious.
I have 2 dogs and one us a pittie. They absolutely need lots of attention and cuddles. These dogs are very people oriented and are happiest when they're with their people. So keeping them in kennels all the time is definitely cruel to them. They do need exercise and play as well. I cannot fathom keeping any dog in a kennel constantly. It goes against everything responsible and loving owners do with their dogs.
Yep. Of course, it’s a shame for the deceased and his family, but you absolutely cannot keep dogs like these out in cages and kennels with just tarps and little dog houses for protection. They don’t get socialized, they don’t make meaningful connections with their handlers, they get bored, they become neurotic, aggression and frustration builds, and ultimately they become very, very dangerous to handle. Dogs need to be allowed to be dogs. They need to be engaged and interacted with and kept as part of the family. If you don’t build that connection with a dog, welp, you’re just carrying a keg of gunpowder into a burning house.

When I was 12 and before I had ever heard stories about pitbulls, my neighbor had one caged in his house under a tarp whenever we visited. It's bark was so strong you could feel the sound on your face. One day, I was sent to his house to drop off a package not realizing my neighbor was not home and had taken his dog out of the cage. I naiively knocked on the door and heard nails on the floor for 1,2,3 seconds, then SMASH, the pitbull jumped THROUGH the plexiglass door on his porch. Yes, that pitbull was protecting its owner's house, but I will never forgot the image of a pitbull silohouetted in the air in front of my eyes. I turned around and bolted like hell directly back to my house and never looked back. I feel grateful that I did not end up being another statistic on that day. Ever since that experience, whenever I hear of pitbull attacks, I always say, yes, I can see that happening. Pitbulls are bred to be able to lock on and never let go and most dog attack fatalities are a result of pitbulls and a few other breeds. If you are confortable having one, that is your decision but I will never feel comfortable being around one again.
That’s totally understandable, but you described a completely non-socialized dog kept in isolation in a cage. He was covered up and probably never saw the light of day and for who knows how many years.Those owners are the problem.

@@Debbie338 The backstory is the owner also had 3 small children in his house. I really don't know if he let it roam freely in the house when guests were not there, but it is suffice to say, after that incident I never bothered to go back to find out.

It looks like low density res zoning, so there is no way this guy had a legit business. Three dogs is the max allowed in Compton for any property, unless it is a legal and permitted kennel business. The city should have shut this nonsense down long ago.

I think it should be noted that Pit Bull is not the breed of dogs we see here. Pit Bull is often used as an umbrella term to name a certain category of dogs, but the specific breed of these dogs are American Bandogges from the look of it. They are not American Pit Bulls. American Bandogges are created by mixing Bull breeds such as the American Pit Bull with Mastiffs to get the defined look, athleticism, and drive of the American Pit Bull with the size and manstopping instincts of Mastiffs. While American Pit Bulls are usually bred, trained, and sold for hunting and fighting purposes and generally not considered good for protection work or guarding, Bandogges are often bred, trained, and used for protection work and guarding and are seen as quite effective.
Mistreated those dogs no doubt, I got 2 pitbulls treat them with proper discipline and love. They back down when other dogs show aggression. Sweet amazing breeds but some people just don’t know how to take care of them like this fool.

"The nanny breed" Is the English term for Staffordshire Bull Terriers. They are an excellent breed. Don't confuse them with mixed breed trash known as pit bulls.

These pit bull type dogs are loaded weapons. The dogs and their owners have a free pass to unalive anyone at anytime. This guy found out but had he survived he would still have these types of weapon dogs.

I remember more than 20 years ago in SoCal when a little girl was killed by 2 dogs while walking down the street with her mother... She was 4 years old I believe. Her mother got badly bitten and desfigurated but lived... The little one didn't make it.
Justice was served, but I feel bad for the dogs because now they have to be put down because of some jerk that got himself killed.

Yes unfortunately it is not banned. Many of us feel breeders shoddily be licensed and regulated but they are not.
Any dog breed can be deadly at feeding time. I owned Pugs for 15 years and have had to break up vicious fights only 2 or 3 times when i fed them. No clue what caused it. But it was crazy scary. Just takes a second.
No stupid a regular dog attack isn't as dangerous as a pitbull attack. A pitbull will disfigure or kill you while a regular dog will attack and look to runaway.

It should be against the law to own that many pitbulls. Having that many is just asking for trouble. I use to own pitbulls , great dogs but need to be trained and put in check or else this is what could happen.
@bigdaddytrips6197 they are not great dogs. They are high liability breed that is notorious for being sweet and then unpredictable. They maul owners kids to death in unprovoked attacks even when treated well. The worse is when they maul other ppl to death or other ppl’s pets

The only "breed" that is supposed to show aggression towards humans are guard dog breeds. Like a Doberman or a Rott. And that is if they do not know you. These fighting breeds like Pits Bull Terriers were originally supposed to be able to be handled by humans and even strangers but aggressive towards each other. How else would you fight them back in the day? This shows you the lines are not even what they were originally for. Boy have these backyard breeders screwed that up and turned that all on its head. So when he tried to break up a food fight they probably turned on him big time...no wonder these dogs are chasing childern and elderly all over the place and see them as game.

I know someone that is a sitter for German shepherds she’s done it for 20 plus years, she re-homes the ones that are fit to be with families, however she’s really small I asked her how she breaks up fights. She said she never puts herself in the middle, she grabs a water hoes and starts spraying, if that doesn’t work she will put something in the middle of them like a chair or what ever is around. She states that works it’s a quick break for her to grab one and separate them. It’s dangerous no matter what but you never ever get in the dead smack middle of a dog fight, stand back use the tools around you.

I've been with my son's pitbull for three years and never once he has tried to attack me or my Grandkids if those dogs mixed then I believe it.

My wife is terrified of dogs and Pit Bull Terriers. She gets behind me, holds on tightly and cries when one is near. She has every right to be and to do so. They are not me. If I ever desire to have a pet, I will purchase me an aquarium, then adopt or rescue some goldfish to put in it. Til this day, I have not seen or heard any reports of anyone being bitten, dragged, mangled, mauled, killed or eaten by anyone's pet goldfish. Man likes peace.

That is my concerns as well. Dogs get PTSD as well. No one can know all the PTSD dogs triggers. They will kick off and it would be no different to the dangers of carrying around an unpinned hand grenade.

No one should be allowed to have that many dogs in a residential neighborhood in the first place secondly when you have that many dogs you make sure you feed them separately so that you can control them and their behavior while feeding. And honestly you don't know how the owner was treating the dogs physically
