Catholics in Londonderry (Derry) in Northern Ireland on Saturday (10/8) cancelled a protest rally, clearing the way for a peaceful Protestant parade. An announcement by the Bogside Residents Association, representing Catholics, was the last in a series of concessions by both
Catholics and Protestants that defused a potentially explosive situation. More than 15,000 Protestants converged on Londonderry from all over Northern Ireland for the annual Apprentice Boys Parade. The march, which commemorates the heroism of 13 apprentices who thwarted a Catholic attack on the city 300 years ago by locking its gates, now symbolises the determination of loyalists to resist all attempts by republicans to reunite Ireland.
