Your enthusiasm has just made my day, well done Dan.
I enjoy my gardening Gary!
I'm thinking of growing board beans for the first time next year. Thanks for the info!🙂
My pleasure, go for it!
I thought for a second you were Russell Brand. Lol
No, he is taller than me!
Haha! I watch his videos and I thought, he has a gardening channel too?? On a serious note, thank you for the videos! I didn’t even realize potatoes could be determinate/indeterminate until I watched your video. This year is my first garden. I waited 50 years to start a garden; who knew I’d like it so much. :)
I've done this for a couple of years. Great results. I'm up north and I put them in spring. Still just at flowers
Corgettes are good in pots, but then I think you've mentioned this before in a previous video.
Keep going mate. Great energy
Plenty to come.
Good for the soil too! Keep the soil you grow beans in - they can actually improve nitrogen levels in the soil. Farmers often plant broad beans, or ‘field beans’ for exactly this reason: the roots have nodules that give off nitrogen rather than take it. It’s called ‘nitrogen fixing’.
True. They say you shouldn't pull them up if you need to use the ground. Just snip them at the ground level. Leave the roots in place and plant around.
True that.
Great stuff, from one Essex man to another. And next year I am planning to grow some broad beans, this year though, I am experimenting with kidney beans and tobacco... 👍👍👍
My great grandfather used to grow and smoke his own tobacco, cured it himself etc. I may grow some next year.
@@homegardens7682 Yeah, try it, the only complex issue we have in England, is the fermentation, and I may make a video progress of my tobacco... 👍👍👍
@T- S-9 👍👍👍
good vod on fava one of the best out there.
Glad it helped.
Hi Dan, have always grown Aquadulce sown in November and The Sutton sown in the spring but this year tried Aquadulce Claudia and prefer the flavour and the yield has been greater. Interesting advice about growing in containers because my soil is on the acid side so shall experiment some in a container next year. Just love your enthusiastic and knowledgeable approach to gardening. Well done. Regards Keith
Cheers Keith. Yes, great yields and flavour.
I must admit to clicking play solely to scope out the biceps on garden Jesus 😍
But what about the Broad beans!!!
Garden Jesus 😅
Some dank looking beans 👍
Cool ain't they!
Great video Dan
Cheers Dwight.
I like growing in pots, it's a lot easier to control everything. I can't wait to get back into growing more things next season when I am not moving house! Have you tried a mild dish soap spray to control the blackfly? I used it last year and it worked well.
I wonder if the potted plants, being off the ground with the barrier of the pot, protects them more? I'm not sure how they get about, but great you have fewer on your potted plants!
I have used washing up liquid before, I try and avoid it now, its the ants I think, dealing with them is the key so next year I will be more attentive to them.
@@homegardens7682 Oooo I've got a lot of ants! They are in my raised beds and in the greenhouse. 🙁
probably in containers the get less moisture so less juice for the aphids
Nice idea.
Cheers!
Perhaps there are less Blackfly on the potted plants cos less Ants would find them than if they were in the ground?, I never had any blackfly till last year when I grew Broad Beans for the first time. The Broad Beans were covered in them, like they attract blackfy like a magnet, I wasn’t going to grow them again for that reason. But a neighbour gave me a handful of Beans that were twice as big as the ones I used before and looked much healthier, so I’m I’ve just planted them to give em another go this year. As you may remember I don’t av a garden so growing them in pots/tubs, if they get infested with blackfly again that’ll be the last time I grow them, as it’s too much effort and the blackfly spreads to some of my other plants. 🌻✌🏽
That could be a consideration. This year I intend to cover the plants with fleece. I have seen it done at the allotment to good effect.
@@homegardens7682 ‘’fleece’’, what is that made from?, not from animals I hope
@@Kiyarose3999 No, its a bit like net curtains.
@@homegardens7682 So the fleece must be able to let light in, but small enough mesh to restrict the smell of the plant?, cos obviously it couldn’t be small enough mesh to actually stop small blackfly getting through?. I may try doing what some do for Carrot fly which is to companion plant Garlic, Onions etc among the Bean plants.
@@Kiyarose3999 Aha! I used the wrong term, sorry. I meant to say mesh like I used last year for my brassicas. Its in this video here. featured in this video ua-cam.com/video/9f6Td9DpgLk/v-deo.html at 8:49
awww my runner beans got loads of black fly too so annoying. My plants are mostly in pots too, looks good
They seriously are!
How many Beans per pot?
Great video as usual. I have recently taken on an allotment, with that in mind I will be planting my broad beans in the ground next year, how much spacing should I give each one roughly in your opinion ?
I grow these every year in the ground and more recently in pots.
In the ground I place them about 1 foot apart. Nip of the tips at a certain height depending on the variety in order to stop blackfly.
Depends on variety, Aquadulce claudia can get large so maybe a metre apart, dwarf varieties can go closer together.
what size is the container?
30 litre.
I Nackered my grape vine i snaped the root from the main trunk I stood triped over it can i rescue it ? Has not grew back since Febuary when it happened ?
Oh dear. Is it still alive? Have you covered up the root and watered it?
No dan I have the Main Trunk with Roots Outside the Green House With The vines inside the greenhouse I have Put down some Bone meal Root Builder pellets Because its outside The soil is still damp . Thanks for getting back to me Dan
Fava Fava tell me what's your Fava woo...
lol!
