can I put a clear coat on my log home or does it have to be stained? I like the look of the logs after I sanded them ; and on small cracks instead of chauking can I use auto body cauck ?
It's normal for wooden houses to check. A wooden house (with its natural checking) can last over 100 years as long as it is built properly (no drywalls or anything that would trap moisture, the wood has to 'breathe') unless the climate is extremely humid.
Hi Missy, No Checkmate 2 is not the same sealant that we use in chinking gaps. Checkmate 2 is specifically designed for the constant movement of checks. If you use backer rod and apply your Checkmate2 at 3/8th of an inch depth you will achieve a 2 point adhesion which will allow the sealant to stretch and compress. With the checks in logs constantly expanding and contracting you wouldn't want to just fill the entire check as that is like filling it with a block of rubber that can neither stretch or compress. This will cause tearing or breakage of the sealant when your checks expand or contract. You can find more information at permachink.com.
Same thing happened to me.. previous owner didnt even bother smoothing the caulking or putting backing rod in & so removing the caulking has taken weeks of solid work to get it out.... after it was all removed... i thought a finish stripper would work but it didnt.... i ended up sanding all the logs to make them uniform & to strip the old stain/finish away. Started filling the checks & plan to stain over the logs before i put the sealant on inbetween the logs... backing rod for everything... Curious... how did you come out ?
I have been using ''Big Stretch'' sealant, and it has been working out great, for my customer and it is $6 a tube
Can that be used on 6x6 post beams???
the music can drive anyone nuts
would it be better to use the epoxy and e-wood to fill crack?

That little spray can duster isn't going to remove the heavy dirt that accumulates over time. There can literally be 1/4" of mud / dirt in there easy.
Be sure to waste as much calk as possible. It's only $20 per tube.
Jerry Burger I was thinking the same! Why couldn't he simply place is thumb on the bead while he laid it down?
Hi, what do you mean when you say that small checks should be sealed with wood finish. What kind of wood finish?
Following.. I'd like to know the same
Hola soy de argentina me podrían decir que le están colocando yo tengo el mismo problema con la madera . gracias
why use backer rod? why not use caulking to completely fill the hole? do I need to hire a pro to do this? is it the same stuff used for chinking?

Do I do this before stain and seal?
Yes. Then a light palm sand when dry.
That looks great
I am currently doing repair on a log home for a customer, pulling all of this crap out as it only lasts 2 years, then pulls loose from the wood.
Doing one now, it's all protruding from the cracks
I use Red Devil (Cedar)
