Super helpful. Im about to refinish a very weathered log home in Moab, Utah. The chinking is very old, and loose in a lot of spots. This video rally helps. Thanks! 👍
Awesome video! I've done a fair amount of chinking myself and learned a lot from this video. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge on what works best for you guys!
I didnt see it at end of video, but I was curious if you guys put some chinking over the spray foam so it has a uniform look and feel to the rest of the lines? Would that be okay or does it trap the foam and cause some other problems?
I’m a caulker in Boston. I’m assuming you could also use a bulk set up on a battery operated bulk caulking gun. Seems like it’d be a little less cumbersome and we also dry tool using Marshalltown slickers. I’m assuming this is a latex product? I suppose they’re different ways of chinking 🤷🏻♂️ as I’ve never done it. Great video though. Really interesting and quality craftsmanship 👍🏻
Hey! How much will this sealing (warm seam) and grinding the log first, dust it, then cover it with an antiseptic and cover 2 layers with oil? can you write what and how much? Thank you very much it is very interesting !!! and cash payment to your hands or through the bank to your company?
Bonjour ,vous avez du bon matériels ,en France quand on a une tendinite,on peut pas travailler avec le pistolet manuel ,du coup je fais comme en pâtisserie 🥮😁bravo 👍🏻
Very helpful. Doesn’t that foam expand far beyond the area you are sealing? Do you need to cut it back after it expands? Also once the foam sets up, do you use the chinking caulk (or whatever the proper name is) on top of the foam? Thanks for the video.
We use the low expanding window and door foam. Trick is to not let it expand out and to tamp it down while still pliable, no cutting it back needed. Once foam is set up, we use the chinking over the top.
I have an old log home and it is chinked. My guess is that they intend to fill the cracks with chink after or even use a log crack filler made by the log home products people. I fill my small 1/4 " cracks with a near color matching latex caulk which holds up fairly well. Rain getting into these cracks and even cold air in the winter can actually get into your home if the cracks are in the wrong place.
Nice job, really good content. Maybe be careful of turning away from camera because it makes it hard to hear you. Otherwise nicely done, very good instruction, and advise from a obvious professional.

We've encountered plenty of blisters or bubbles but they're usually from gas expansion of the water vapor trapped in the chinking when it heats too quickly, as in direct sunlight. That's our going theory at least....I've heard lots of explanations. Permachinks current formula blisters much more easily than sashco.
I'm working on a log home built in the late 1980's. Is it true that I won't need backer rod? The joints are all pretty tight. Should I remove the old caulk first? Great video, thanks.
The general rule is that gaps under 1/4 inch do not need backer rod. Anything above that does require it. You are aiming to make the 'web' of chinking compound span the gap from log to log with a 'web' thickness of 3/8 inch, no more. Backer rod makes this possible.
Great video..... but the gentleman filming might want to see a doctor when your just standing idle and need to breath that heavy could mean he has heart problems. Stay safe kiddos.... pays to be observant.
We drag the machine up onto scaffolding. Personally it I find it easier than tying off that big bulky hose off the chinking machine to the scaffolding. Nothing beats the portability of 29oz tubes up on scaffolding though, may be a good option if there isn't a whole lot. With the tubes you can't lay as good of a bead however since there aren't any custom ribbon style tips.
@@tbird267 I ended up chinking my 20x40 2 level log house awith 29oz tubes and basic guns from Home Depot. It wasn't bad at all. Between the pace I was going and the fact that I could cut the nozzle tip to flow more easily, I never had hand or forearm issues. If this was a business for me, I would look into the bulk loaders and caulk savings, although, my next log house is going to be flat wood instead of round and mortar instead of synthetic. It is also going to be smaller. This house is about 1600 sqft and I could be happy in about half that.

Depends on the bead size and how big the logs are (how many lines there are) but buckets run about $250/five gallons, so roughly 2-3k in material on average.
I've always liked round logs better although I agree the hewn log homes tend to look cleaner. I was thinking the hewn logs became a status symbol due to the extra work involved to square a log back before mills and chainsaws. I'd built a small cabin a few years ago and couldn't imagine adding the extra work to the process.
The guy filming is driving me nuts by the breathing. My God man your not taking a picture. Take the phone from your face. You sound like a 300 pounder.
really good video for a newbie/diy log home owner! enjoyed is and you did nice work!
Travis. Nice work on the Big Elk Guard Station. Your service was top notch and professional. Thank you very much. ~ Rich

Great instruction with the skill to match👍
Jack of all trades, Master of none
get a job douchebag
That tube don't last long by the looks of it . Constant refill . What do you think of the bulk loader ?
Perfect job !!

Yes we chink over the foam. The foam acts as a backer material. No problems with moisture
“Hopefully there are no bats in there”
-keeps working lol

What’s the difference between caulking and chinking? Isn’t it the same?
@@sanyaod I’ve never done chinking so I don’t know but it certainly looks the same with the same methods and goals
We have recently switched over to the electric guns from the air ones in the video. I'll post a new video up some day.
Great job,I thought you would just wet the old finger and smear 😂
Hey, my job has purchased one of these sprayers but we cant find the air pressure documentation. What pressure do you use on the air?
Seems very time consuming but very nice job. Would like to see this home upon completion of the chinking. Sure it looks nice. Thank you for the video.

i really liked this
Thank you Where can I get that 29oz gun Thank you.. Looked around but haven't seen that one
..
Permachink sells the Albion guns in two or three sizes, one of them 30 oz. I believe.

Why is there spray foam in the checks of the log cut ends?

I can see the ease of use advantage with the foam over using backer rod, but do you know cost per foot? Is one more than the other?
I am not sure on the cost per foot difference. The cans are about $12 at Home Depot and go a long ways.
Nice job, really good content. Maybe be careful of turning away from camera because it makes it hard to hear you. Otherwise nicely done, very good instruction, and advise from a obvious professional.
ours right now looks like a yellow nightmare foam spray my dad did, then he got sick and has been in hospital last two weeks

Hi. Thanks for the video. Did you say not chink a new home?
do you use backer rod?
Well done.
I was told not to use spray foam in the gaps between logs cause it gives of a gas and makes the chinking bubble. Have you encountered this?
We've encountered plenty of blisters or bubbles but they're usually from gas expansion of the water vapor trapped in the chinking when it heats too quickly, as in direct sunlight. That's our going theory at least....I've heard lots of explanations. Permachinks current formula blisters much more easily than sashco.
Madrona Log Home Repair & Care Iam using Log Jam by Sashco.
What is that material in that gun called you are using? Can I get it at building supply stores?
Sashco Log Jam. You can buy it at The Log Home Store online. Local building supply stores are unlikely to carry it.
@@tbird267 thanks
What is that material made off ??

I’m watching you work and I’m hearing the guy breathing. He’s holding a camera harder than what you doing? Lol lol
I like the potential cost savings of these bulk loaders over the 29oz tubes, but how do you load when you are 20 feet up on scaffolding?
rope it down to your help :)

what would the cost be doing it yourself

I just lost my appetite on log homes! shitss
As an Asian American I am offended by the title of this video!
The term 'chinking" and "chink" are several hundred years older than the slur, snowflake.
but the use of the word in the video is not to be confused with the slur
Why do people build these round log homes? So fugly. Traditional hewn logs are so much more beautiful and easier to maintain.

Sprayfoam...! That's a terrible synthetic product! It attracts moist🙈 Its a log home - use natural materials 🤞
The foam does not wick moisture and is fine to use.

How much does it cost to chink a cabin. Average range
They aint logs mate, they are tree trunks lol.
Modern 'log' homes are actually square flat cut nowadays so dont need much chinkage :)
