The Icicle Works were formed in Liverpool in 1981 when Cherry Boy's drummer Chris Sharrock answered an advert in The Liverpool Echo placed by a 20 year old Ian McNabb. Next addition was bass player Chris Layhe and The Icicle Works were complete. In 1981, the band recorded a six-song independently released cassette entitled Ascending. In 1982, they released the independent single "Nirvana", which made it to #15 on the UK's indie charts. The following year, the Icicle Works were signed to the Beggars Banquet label, who issued the single "Bird's Fly (Whisper to a Scream" on their subsidiary label Situation Two. Later that year, The Icicle Works' released their biggest UK hit, 1983's "Love is a Wonderful Colour", which was a UK Top 15 single. Their debut eponymous album (1984) followed shortly thereafter, reached number 24 on the UK charts and entered the U.S. top 40. Also appearing on the U.S. top 40 singles charts at around the same time (and hitting the Canadian top twenty) was "Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly)", a retitled and slightly remixed version of the band's Situation Two release of 1983. Their single 'Love is a Wonderful Colour' was most recently used in the wedding episode of Gavin and Stacey as they walked down the aisle. The band has got together again for a short tour to celebrate their 30th Anniversary and will be playing four dates in the UK. The tour kicks off in Manchester at the Manchester Club Academy on the 29th April, followed by The 02 Academy Liverpool on the 30th, The 02 Academy Islington 6th May and ending at The 02 Academy Birmingham on the 7th May. Lead singer Ian McNabb kindly gave his time to speak to us at WinkBall.com about his long and varied career to date. We are very much looking forward to speaking to the fans of The Icicle Works when they play at The 02 Academy in Liverpool on the 30th April.
Seen him solo and with the band Amazing gigs and so approachable. He was having his tea in the local weathespoons before the gig and didn't mind one bit being hassled by me and my mate for photos and signed tickets etc. Just a great ordinary legend.
followed the Icicle works in the 80s great band live saw them loads. Thanks for this great to hear BOOTS talking again.
This bloke never gets enough cred, great songwriter
Thanks. I really enjoyed this!
Mr McNabb seemed very relaxed, and has a sense of humour about himself but without unnecessary false modesty. I liked the way you could see him really paying attention to the interviewer's questions and offering thoughtful answers.
Also good to see that McNabb wasn't bashing Chris Layhe - there was a bit too much of that in his book Merseybeast, and I found it slightly off-putting.
Kudos to the interviewer for asking some reasonable questions and then (for the most part) just letting his subject talk!
Nice work all round. :)
Nice to hear a decent interview for a change. Ians a lovely grounded guy.
Fab Interview, Ian McNabb is a LEGEND, top songwriter n guitarist - thanks for posting
Great guy and a great singer
Saw Ians solo show last week and he was amazing. Great voice, great guitar player and had plenty of time and banter for two Scousers who had fagged all the way to Hebden Bridge to see him.
Very interesting , talented guy , top man 🥊
Hi, I saw you, or I think it was you , at Wigan Old Courts, 29/09/2018, before the main band Close to Tears and I thought your performance of 'love is a wonderful colour' was fabulous! Thanks for taking me back to the 80's!
Ian " boots" Mc nabb has always been a massive talent!
I loved their music, it was always very well written, without feeling "produced."
Interesting little interview!
don't tell ian, but he is a stone genius if there ever was one....
Don’t worry...I won’t!
Briliant, humble, funny, articulate man.
HOLLOW HORSE ' the best song for me ''''''' Be careful what you dream of
it may come up and surprise you
I can't confess my life's a mess
I've come to idolise you
You liken it to walking on hot coals
I'll keep my boots on
Wisen up and fly straight
There's a shape on the horizon
In a hollow horse I'll steal my way
inside your guarded heart
So selfishly the needs I harbour
when we are apart
My past strung out behind me,
contradiction and disaster
I'm in search of charity,
a union I could master
We'll be as we are
When all the fools
who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide
Intimidated, restless in the wait
Things I chose to value
I no longer have a use for
I ridicule myself for all the things
those symbols stood for
When vanity has played a part
in every leader's downfall
Wait to storm the gates, what's left
undone to hang around for
We'll be as we are
When all the fools
who doubt us fade away
Fortune deep and wide
Intimidated, restless in the wait
Cool guy! He was right about the music. Ll the eighties bands would not get any air play with the rubbish on their now. We have regressed in music big time.Thank goodness for the internet!!!
