I love Bruckner and I particularly love this symphony. There's this "cathedral architecture" about his works and then there are the simplest of motifs which grow and evolve into great counterpoint and massive climaxes. I find the music in the last few minutes stunning.

50:10-51:20 is miraculous...the aching long cries/sighs of the winds over the chromatic turns of the strings pushing and pulling, culminating in a luminous yet tragic passage topped by pizzicato violins that opens into a huge horn chorale. I don't like much of Bruckner, but I am so glad I was able to hear just this one minute

33:45 It's like a half-minute crescendo that goes literally NOWHERE. Sometimes it just seems like Bruckner did not know what he was doing.

So, is this a commercial recording? Or is it a live recording? It’s certainly not Karajan, as is advertised here. The last few minutes sound amazing with those accented triplets in the strings. Celibidache does that too, but at waaaaaaaaay too slow a tempo. But in this performance, you get the same great effect without having to slow it down.

    • @danielwilliam8765

It's not uncommon to sometimes hear conductors making noises. in this case it's no doubt due to the physical demands of conducting music of the sort of length Bruckner's music is, or maybe it's just an expression of passion. It's certainly not ruining the recording at all.
