I am a retired Oboist from Boston and personally knew Everett Firth, Timpanist, of the Boston symphony. He said, on more than one occasion, Timpany must be played standing up to be played properly. I see so many orchestras with them sitting down.
Leading Bruckner Symphonies could well be Marek Janowski's calling card. This is a fine performance and we are indebted to WDR for posting it for the world to enjoy. A fine interpreter of Bruckner, or any other composer, cannot be successful without the right orchestra. And here is where we see WDR Symphony Orchestra rise to that short list of elite ensembles. At a time when many musical organizations beg off and tell listeners they will play Bruckner live after the pandemic ends, here is WDR in full force. Thanks so much to all involved, including the audio-visual technicians. I am sure to recommend this performance to others and revisit it, and other WDR recordings, in the future. Many thanks!
This was my favourite music when I was 10 years old. I grew up with the Von Karajan - Berliner Philharmoniker (ed. R. Haas) version (1987 re-issue of the original in 1974), which is still my favourite (nostalgia at work I guess). But I very much enjoyed this performance as well. For me this piece stands or falls with the tempo: it has to be júst right, and this one is... just right. Thanks WDR! If film would have existed back then, Bruckner would have been the 19th century John Williams (or Hans Zimmer if you like): such big, dramatic almost film-like music. Love it :)
Magnificent performance- all the weight the work requires, but with such clarity and balance between sections too. Perfect tempi. Thank you. This is my new favourite performance of a work I have loved for fifty years.

I loved the performance overall especially the first horn player whom caught my attention right from the beginning. The conductor had the confidence of the orchestra, so they started out running. I'm glad the conductor didn't try to squeeze with a tight hand and so he kept the codes loose.
1:02:50 Amazing pulsing effect that Janaowski gets out of the strings playing those triplets. Celibidache did the same thing, but at WAY too slow a tempo. Here it’s sounds just right.

Normalerweise sieht das anders aus. Diese Aufnahme ist vom 18.12.2021, als ja noch wegen der Corona-Maßnahmen weniger Menschen in die Philharmonie konnten.
Umso mehr freut es uns, dass wir treue "Fans" wie Sie haben, die ebenso die Möglichkeiten nutzen, digital dabei zu sein. Dafür möchten wir uns bei Ihnen bedanken. Wir versuchen natürlich immer attraktive und interessante Programme, sowie gute Ticketkonditionen anzubieten, die Lust darauf machen, das Konzert live zu besuchen. Ob jemand ein Ticket kauft, oder nicht, liegt am Ende vermutlich an vielen verschiedenen Faktoren, die wir nicht immer alle kennen oder beeinflussen können. Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieser romantischen und großartigen Sinfonie mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und vor allem brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt nuanciert. Der intelligente und erfahrene Dirigent leitet das perfekt trainierte Orchester in verschiedenen Tempi und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Einfach wundervoll!

La cuarta "romántica" de Bruckner (1824-1896) es una de sus sinfonías con la mayor cantidad de revisiones de todo su ciclo. La información dice que la versión es de 1878-80, pero no dice si es de la edición de Leopold Nowak o de Robert Haas.

Ich habe vorher Cleveland mit Welser-Möst gehört, die blieben fast stehen. Daraufhin suchte ich mir die schnellste Aufnahme, das war diese. Ich finde die Tempi frisch und angenehm. Man sollte Bruckner nicht auch noch tempomäßig verfetten lassen. Die Mehlspeisen haben schon genügend Embonpoint verursacht. 😄
@@achenarmyst2156 Ich persönlich empfinde diese Aufnahme eben einfach als etwas zu gehetzt. Eine ebenfalls etwas "flottere" Aufnahme ist die von H. Blomstedt mit der Staatskapelle Dresden. Eine meiner liebsten Einspielungen, tempomäßig aber für mich die Grenze. Vielleicht sagt die Ihnen ja auch zu?
The opening few minutes is the only likeable part to me. Otherwise this whole work goes nowhere. I tried. I love all great classical music, but Bruckner is one composer I never took to. I was tortured two years ago in Paris at the Philharmonie with this piece. Mendelssohn, Brahms, Liszt, Schumann did all of this so much better.
The composers you name are mostly from earlier periods. Bruckner like Mahler writes these extended late romantic symphonies with lots of nature associations. Especially when listening to the Scherzo of the 4th I don‘t know what‘s not to enjoy.

The conductor gives the orchestra the dynamics of the piece, so she is looking at him to see how he wants the orchestra to play 😊
