23:03 “GOD, why don’t you stop whining and on with it, I HAVE HEARD THIS SHIT BEFORE!” I feel so bad for Sidney man…Neve is absolutely INCREDIBLE in this role.
"Back when school shootings were shocking." Damn, that really hit home. My 6 year old is currently practicing a lockdown drill at school where they prepare for danger in the building.
Yup. Live in Texas, as far back as 2002 when I was in first grade we had simulated lockdowns called Code Blue to get us ready for potential school shootings. We'd barricade ourselves in a corner of the room, the teacher would lock the door turn off the lights and stay off to the side. And we would stay in silence for 30 minutes while designated teachers came to bang on our doors and try to scare us. I remember the first time it happened some classmates cried. By highschool it would be time off to be on our phones and we were already used to it, around the time of Sandy Hook. I graduated hs in 2013. Now we're desensitized and even make movies about school shootings featuring gratuitous violence. I worry for the next generation.
I think it really makes sense that James loves Scream 3. The Kill Count series started off as exactly what it sounds like, counting kills, but much like the Scream series, it evolved over time and started to focus more on the BTS and meta aspect of horror. It shows growth on James' and the Kill Count staffs' part. Oh and also James if you get this far, go Green >:)
The fact Scream 3 is basically a whole expose on Harvey Weinstein AND is the first Scream movie I ever watched, gives this film a special place in my heart. I also love that Scream 3 continued the tradition of introducing a character we love (Jennifer) that sadly dies.
We just have to take in the fact Ghostfaces are just OP lol Scream 1 and 2 are where things are grounded and believable but later films you must accept it like Jill and Amber did all these killings in Scream 4 and 5
@@David-nd4to Stone would’ve easily beaten the crap out of Roman considering he was still able to defend himself temporarily even if he got a knife jammed on his back and the fact there’s a clear difference between their physicality Stone could easily win in a fight had Roman not use any sort of weapons and approached him directly on combat
James.... I SO appreciate your growth into loving this movie. This kill count was fun to watch. I held the same sentiment regarding the movie as you used to do, but man did I change it with time because of how fun I find this movie to be. And to see this change of heart in yourself, that's really great to see. This was a blast of an episode.
Scream 3’s Sidney arc is actually fitting and Neve gave her best performance imo. Sidney’s living in self-imposed exile and isolation is what they did with Laurie Strode in Halloween 2018 or Luke in The Last Jedi before the 'hero went into exile after a traumatic event' trope went cool. Also if you rewatch Scream 2, there are many hints of Sidney taking 'being alone' as a solution which really paved the way to her isolation in Scream 3, so narrative-wise, Sidney's action in living in isolation not only makes sense and is in-character, but was also set up directly in 2, this shows great continuity and the ability of filmmakers able to pull off a consistent character arc across films. And Scream 3 finally wrapped up her arc by her leaving her door open, and moving on. A beautiful end note of the greatest final girl in the original trilogy, which Scream 5 picked up on greatly by confirming she married and formed a family with Mark Kincaid.
I know this is a bad take but i honestly like the reveal of Roman being the killer at the end and Sydney's half brother and how it ties into the dark message of Hollywood. Roman works as the killer because he's manipulative, he knows the movie sets and the tricks of the trade to pull this off even by himself. Plus when it comes to encapsulating the core of a Ghost face the core is Jealousy. Which after Roman's kill count becomes the driving force with the "Fan Killers" of the next Scream films. A lot of people compare Scream 3 to a Telenovela in terms of writing but honestly i think that's what makes the film work. Over the top drama that you wouldn't see anywhere else makes this film work. Plus i loved Sydney's final battle with Roman at the end where she confronts him on all his jealousy bullcrap issues with her. She didn't need to meet him because to her all the Ghost Faces are the same Jealousy bull crap she's been dealing with since Billy and Stu tried to kill her.
I love how you hear Ghostface's muffled scream of "Aaah!" when Sidney yeets him off the ledge onto the bed. It's great how they remind you Ghostie's always a person.
Agreed, and if I could make a comparison, there's also Jason, who you can hear grunting until his death in Part 4, showing that he was a person, Part 6 he was a silent zombie before being chained underwater. Once he's out of the water in Part 7 onwards, you can hear faint gurgling, showing that his lungs are still filled with years worth of water. It's an interesting detail to me
@@JargonMadjin and funny enough, despite Jason audibly grunting in pain or groaning, you still are terrified of him when he still manages to run in Part 2, 3, and 4.
@@JargonMadjin I loved the scene in the 2009 reboot where he throws the axe through the dudes back. You think he’s going to give chase, but really he’s sprinting to build momentum. Smart Jason is terrifying.
In retrospect, Scream 3 had balls to make the conflict as a result of a gang rape committed by a movie director when the Weinstein’s were so involved in the franchise
The movie is taking a stab (pun intended) at the OG slimebag, Roman Polanski. Convicted of drugging and raping a 13 year old, he fled to France in the 70s and had just been given a lifetime achievement award by the Academy, even though he couldn't legally step on American soil to accept it. The final round of murders calls back to the death of his (barely 18 year old) wife Sharon Tate. The shit about Weinstein wouldn't hit the fan for years.
Since I first saw Scream 3 it has always been my favorite. It's just so full of CAMP and it doesn't take itself seriously. Parker Posey really went for the Oscar here and that woman gave so much life to the movie. It was just such a fun time watching her own every scene she was in.
23:50 if I had a nickel for everytime Neve accidentally stabbed someone in a scream movie, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't much but it's hilarious it happened twice
Watching these recounts is an absolute joy, seeing the evolution of each kill count breakdown is has been so entertaining and highlights the growth of the channel over these wonderful past years. On a weird side note for the Scream franchise, surely I can't be the only one that thinks the Actress that plays Sidney's mum could pass as being related to Matthew Lillard.
I remember when his background was just that single book case with a few books and just a mask or action figure on it or something and now he has a whole set and production crew and everything. The evolution is crazy and being here to witness it has been awesome. Hats off to James, we appreciate all the effort he’s put into entertaining us horror/slasher fans 🙏🏻💪🏻👍🏻
18:02 this was actually explained. There a pressure point under your armpit somewhere that he was actually holding in the scene to hide his heartrate. I learned about this last year i believe.
I kinda love how weirdly wholesome Liev Schreiber's "movie star demands" are for these movies. Other actors demand more screentime or to get all the best lines, he just asks "Can my dog have a walk-on?" (the second movie) and "Can I take my jacket off and show how buff I've gotten?" (this one.) It's just amusing to me.
I love the Ghostface reveal in this one, it was great for the final/concluding chapter. I just can't decide if Roman was written to be annoying or if Scott Foley was just awful in the role 🤷
Depends what you mean by annoying, I don't think he's annoying as Ghostface or in his reveal scene. As a director, before the reveal, maybe not annoying but you definitely aren't meant to have respect or sympathy for him. People are dead and his takeaway is "Someone is trying to ruin MY movie". If he's not meant to be seen as short-sighted and selfish that is ABYSMAL writing
Roman is the John Wick or James Bond of all Ghostfaces he’s got the gimmicks, cool movie gears and he goes for clean and effective kills no wasting time stabbing his victims more than once or twice. Plus he did it all solo, what a tank!
honestly, Roman is probably one of the best ghostfaces. He did all the killing himself, (In this version) and was probably the only one with an actual motive that didnt involve himself being just famous.
@@Izaan2810 Billy killed people because his mom left him, Roman killed people because his mom rejected him and didn’t love him. Mrs. Loomis loved Billy and was there for him most of his life, Roman never had a mother
I just wanna point out that scream three is set in Hollywood where movies are made obviously. I have a feeling Roman had the sfx department make him a full body double. How well the effects would have been back then? Idk but I always thought of it that way when I came to his fake death.
I still can't believe James frontloaded all these Scream recounts to, as we say in Swiftieville, "keep us fed." You didn't need to, but we thank you and hope your father is doing well.
Reposted from previous Kill Count: I really liked how, despite Randy's assertions the killer would be supernatural, the series remained grounded and realistic (for a slasher film series, at any rate), yet they still managed to incorporate seemingly supernatural elements. Sidney's dreams and "visions" about her mother make perfect sense once this stuff starts getting stirred up, what with her PTSD, and especially with Roman guiding her towards things like the "Maureen Murder Flashback" set that will be triggers for her. Bulletproof vests let Roman (and Sidney) be more durable than a human should otherwise be, evoking certain unstoppable killers. The ornate ice pick Sidney uses brings to mind any number of magic daggers from assorted classic horror films, and the final shot of it sticking out of Roman's chest is evocative of the classic stake in the heart of a vampire. And finally, of course, Roman only dies for real when Dewey shoots him in the head.
I ran into David Arquette in Puerto Rico. He was shooting for a web series. He approached me curious what I was doing in a dangerous area. We chatted. The coolest and down to earth guy! Ironically you posting this, I've been re-watching the series. Thanks!
I actually think this movie helped me figure out what I've always felt was missing from the newer Scream movies: slapstick. There is a lot of slapstick in the first three, but especially this one where it's not just limited to Ghostface. From what I recall, 4 and 5 don't smack their villains around nearly as much (with the exception of Jill's self beat-down, I suppose)
I think the fact that Sydney kills Roman with a ice pick is vastly overlooked. Randy literally talks about Basic Instinct and that a female uses an Ice Pick in the original Scream. It's such a specific thing that I doubt it's a coincidence. I think it's a great fan callback from Wes or at least someone involved
James has grown so much as a person and as a content creator since the channel started, and I've been here for a very long time, so it's hard to express just how much I love this channel and how much I love seeing James do progressively cooler and cooler things, from just counting kills and cracking jokes to deep dives into the creation and history of a film, where kills are only a small part of it, as well as hosting podcasts with big names like Howie Mandel and interviewing WWE superstars.
I haven't clicked so fast. I'm always so excicted to watch James and the effort they all put in to our favorite horror movies. Scream has always been one of my favorite so the recounts are always awesome
In my opinion, if Roman and Sydney had known and met each other beforehand, the Ghostface reveal would have been more impactful (also if Roman got more screen time). And instead of pursuing Sydney, he pursued John Milton in full for what he did to Maureen Prescott, by destroying the film's chances of commercial success by killing off Milton and the rest of the crew. The Director role would have allowed him to move his plan into motion. Also, in my version, Roman didn't "direct" Stu and Billy to murder Maureen, because that wouldn't make sense.
Scream 3 is one of my favorites in the franchise, it's nowhere near bad, all the Scream films are great, but I think as far as Sidney's arc goes, 3 ends it in a nice way to where if this was the final film, it would be a pretty satisfying trilogy. Understandable why it's usually considered the weakest though, but as far as most slasher franchises go, Scream doesn't have a "worst" one
While 3 isn't my favorite, I absolutely love the ending. It hits all the right beats for me. The music, and the way it swells at just the right moments. Sidney finally free to live her life and no longer be afraid (at least if this had truly been the end). Dewey proposing to Gale (David and Courteney played that scene perfectly). After everything the OG3 had gone through, it was nice to think they'd finally all get a happy ending.

It's depressing that we live in a world where this is basically yearly.

"Like a reverse OJ Simpson"
I think is most underrated joke you have ever done! That was EXACTLY on point
“You’re obsessed with her and you’re obsessed with her daughter.” Love that line. The only thing wrong with Scream 3 is Jennifer dying.
I don't believe she died on screen. I think she faked her own death. Her character was an actress after all
I love that James called out the fact that Liev Schrieber could easily take Scott Foley in a fight. I mean, seriously...
Haha yeah - and also Patrick Warburton? That Ghostface costume really gives the killer super strength
@Ben Haynes at least Patrick got stabbed from behind.
We just have to take in the fact Ghostfaces are just OP lol Scream 1 and 2 are where things are grounded and believable but later films you must accept it like Jill and Amber did all these killings in Scream 4 and 5
Yeah, liev is like 6ft 3 and 220lb. He’s not getting tossed around like a bag of groceries

I need to rewatch this and maybe the whole series because I think I missed that Kincaid thing in it
I know this is a bad take but i honestly like the reveal of Roman being the killer at the end and Sydney's half brother and how it ties into the dark message of Hollywood.
The funny thing is, speech AIs are sophisticated enough to mimic virtually anybody's voice - wonder if it will play into any of the new SCREAM films.
I love how James is man enough to admit he has changed his mind
The mocking of "I still got to make my movie" Matched his mouth so well and it was incredible.
Well of course it matched his mouth lmao

Shocked Weinstein didn’t realize Wes was calling him out
Wes has balls. He knew those men were creeps and he called them out.

I love the recounts. It explores the movies so much more than it originally had. Thank you James for making these amazing recounts
The amount of Wrestling references James uses in his videos is ALL ELITE
Pretty RAW of him to do that.
18:02 this was actually explained. There a pressure point under your armpit somewhere that he was actually holding in the scene to hide his heartrate. I learned about this last year i believe.
"Cotton races through LA to save his partner like a reverse OJ Simpson" got me so good omg
I kinda love how weirdly wholesome Liev Schreiber's "movie star demands" are for these movies. Other actors demand more screentime or to get all the best lines, he just asks "Can my dog have a walk-on?" (the second movie) and "Can I take my jacket off and show how buff I've gotten?" (this one.)
It's just amusing to me.
My love for Parker Posey as Jennifer Jolie never ceases. She truly carried a part of this movie on her back 🤧
From just counting the kills to going into depth into production and the story of the movie. Keep going James!
Parker was phenomenal in this and she became one of my favorite actresses of all time after seeing this, and I still adore her.
"You weren't a princess, you were a queen", Damn that hits hard.
I love that James is doing the re-counts. I'll probably still watch the old videos every once in a while lol
Scream 1: Sydney punches Gale

honestly, Roman is probably one of the best ghostfaces. He did all the killing himself, (In this version) and was probably the only one with an actual motive that didnt involve himself being just famous.

16:14 Dewy and the Gayles sound like an 80’s band
Reposted from previous Kill Count:
I really liked how, despite Randy's assertions the killer would be supernatural, the series remained grounded and realistic (for a slasher film series, at any rate), yet they still managed to incorporate seemingly supernatural elements.

22:07 gave off the same vibes as “I’m Lawrence Gordon, I’m a doctor.”

Freaking love this dude. Even if it is the same kill count his commentary is amazing
More like a least favorite one
While 3 isn't my favorite, I absolutely love the ending. It hits all the right beats for me. The music, and the way it swells at just the right moments. Sidney finally free to live her life and no longer be afraid (at least if this had truly been the end). Dewey proposing to Gale (David and Courteney played that scene perfectly).
After everything the OG3 had gone through, it was nice to think they'd finally all get a happy ending.
“Scream 3” is a crappy movie. It’s completely unnecessary (the first “Scream” movie really didn’t need any sequels), it has such a boring, lazy, poorly-written, by-the-numbers plot, and it is the exact same cliché thing that it comments on/mocks.
