      atleast on highways it still tends to ignore oncoming trucks for way too long causing them to flashbang you, especially if their headlights are obstructed by bushes on the median. Other than that it seems pretty responsive.

    Best thing about Tesla version of adaptive headlights is how much more it can keep active compared to other manufacturers’ versions. Others shuts of immediately for street lights or above/below certain speeds but Tesla, keeps them on.

    The main problem with these is they don’t activate early enough at dusk - it has to get really dark before high beam starts being used.
    And because there is no way to just manually turn on high beam without changing the settings, I end up driving around holding the stalk towards me to constantly 'flash', until it gets dark enough.

    • @herrtichy
      @herrtichy Місяць тому

      Jeez, what? That sounds uncomfortable. My Corsa is on the other end, it starts using the matrix high beam a little earlier than I would. When that happens I pull the stalk once and it goes into manual low beam until I pull the stalk again which triggers automatic matrix high beam again. So I can choose to go five or ten minutes during dusk with no high beams and then let the car do its thing again. It's actually a good "workflow".

    I wish the we could get the adaptive headlights for oncoming traffic without curves in the US. Instead our laws are preventing it for stupid reasons…

  •  Місяць тому +4

    Headlight aiming is incorrect, too much to right side.
    Once I received the update (M3 2021), I instantly noticed that the box was way too offset to right side. I found the Tesla headlight aiming manual and did the adjustment. Now the box was spot on centered on traffic. However, too high. I did lower the headlights and then they worked properly.
    After that I had the headlight units replaced by Tesla for condensation and had a long dark drive home. Instantly I saw that headlight aim was again all over the place. Too low, too right sided… So stopped by a CircleK and did the quick adjustment myself. Again, perfect result.
    Bottom line - proper adjustment per Tesla guide is almost always needed!

    • @hadtopicausername
      @hadtopicausername Місяць тому +5

      Wait, did Tesla send you off on your way with headlights out of alignment after the replacement? I call that shoddy work.

    •  Місяць тому +1

      @@hadtopicausername yes. After replacement headlights were again aimed way to the right and so low that they iluminated like one car length ahead. As it fell dark only after a long ferry drive, going back was not an option. So I performed adjustment myself on a level surface pointing at a wall.

    •  Місяць тому +2

      @@hadtopicausername they did also replace all taillights for condensation. Afterwards there were some minor scratches on paint around tail light units. Rubber seal of trunk was installed incorrectly (trunk carpeting was not layered into seal correctly), trunk opening plastic trim was loose, left trunk recess had a misaligned bottom piece creating a gap for small stuff to fall through beneath carpet. I fixed all that myself as I did apply additional noise deadening to rear resonant surfaces (btw, big improvement in road noise reduction). But yeah, not what I would call quality work by a service center.

  • @pbasista

    It seems to be a nice improvement with these lights. As someone has pointed out, Tesla cars had "all the hardware necessary" for selectively blocking parts of the light cone for years now. But they only managed to deliver the actual feature now. It took them years. To get the lights behave acceptably well.
    Now, I am trying to put that into a perspective of some other feature that Tesla has been advertising about for an even longer time. They have been claiming that their cars have "all the hardware necessary" for the so-called "full self-driving" feature. They have claimed that for years now. And yet, that feature is still unavailable. Not in the EU. Not in the US. Yes, I am aware that they are constantly improving. And yes, I understand that they might be 97 % there or 98 % there. It is possible.
    But they are not 100 % there. And those last fractions of a percentage point take the longest. In order for their driving assistance system to be able to provide a fully featured self-driving experience, it is necessary for them to be 100 % there. No one would care about an assistance system that will drive you into a ditch or worse in 1 % of the situations. Or even in 0.1 % of the situations. That would not be acceptable. Such a system also would not receive regulatory approval to be operated without a constant human supervision. Which means that it cannot possibly be called a "full self-driving" system.
    So, I am wondering, if kind-of-acceptable pixel lights took Tesla 3 years or so to develop, how long would it take them to develop a feature that is much more difficult, much more demanding and delicate to design and test. They of course claim that they will be done "by the end of next year". And they keep claiming something like that for years now.
    Given all of these facts, I think that whatever they claim now about their "full self-driving" feature's availability cannot be trusted, unfortunately. They themselves have created this kind of bad vibe about it. By constantly over-promising and under-delivering.

    What annoys me about these headlights is that they shut off a pretty big cone infront of you basically turning the entire road infront of you pitch black and the cone tends to not allign with the car infront properly aswell causing it to sometimes blind them in bends. It also refuses to enable at early dawn or late dusk and it has to be basically pitch black for it to start working but at the same time always auto enables inside cities for whatever reason which is illegal in my country and can me get fined. It also doesn't seem to recognise pedestrians or cyclists even if they have reflective vests on. These are all things they can hopefully improve with software updates in the future though. It's certainly a lot better than not having it, don't get me wrong, but it's worlds behind from what you get on something like an VW ID3 or Audi Q4 e-tron.
