My cam failed after the 3rd use. My mower was registered as all my equipment is. I took it to my dealer. Fixed for free and in about 5 days. Was informed that the replacement cams are properly made. My dealer verified your information of this being for certain serial numbers. Mine works like a dream so far.
I work at a Honda Power Equipment dealer, and have already repaired several of these under warranty. I thought the same as you... I'm a fairly big guy, and could probably pull the rope anyway. Nope. The starter rope wants to rip your arm out of it's socket. It's a fairly lengthy process to replace the cam, because the crank shaft has to be removed to get to it. The new engines are overhead valve, but not overhead cam any longer. You have to remove all the parts under the deck, and all the parts on top until you get a nearly bare crank case. Even the cylinder needs to be un-bolted and removed because the cam is under the cylinder. The fastest I've done it so far is 2 1/2 hours, and warranty pays for 1 1/2 hours. I would like to watch a factory tech and see how they came up with that time. I'm hoping there may be a faster method or a trick to save steps. Time will tell, I guess.
Thank you for the insight from a Honda tech’s perspective. I saw on some of the earlier comments that dealerships were not entirely interested in fixing the issue. I wonder if the actual labor time versus the warranty reimbursement is why authorized repair centers are hesitant to take care of this. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates. I was shocked at how the customer said it took his shoulder off and out of socket He’s waiting to hear back from Honda about what to do with it Only a month old
I was interested in a Honda engine before the announcement of stopping production of gas engines. I have a Briggs & Scrapem with a bad cam in a single cylinder rider, still works.. Warranty work never pays decent, regardless of the manufacturer.
I was a ford dealer tech for 15 years . Flat rate time on mower repair ? When people buy something new and it has a problem they wonder why nobody wants to do the warranty work . Nobody wants to work for free.
I definitely agree that battery operated equipment is starting to put a dent in the gasoline powered market. As you stated, if you have a big lawn, gas is still the way to go. I see both sides of the issue. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
@@averagejoevideo9556 I have an acre of lawn and have had no trouble using a battery operated mower for the past three years. On the contrary I do not wear myself out starting the thing... Gas motors went downhill from my point of view when Ariens outsourced to China all their mowers. Pete.
I went with a Toro 60v lawnmower. It has no trouble cutting my 1/3 acre lawn in one charge. I don't miss the stink and hard starting gas and oil changes of gas engines.
Mine is over 20+ years old and is still working perfectly! I have plenty of electric tools, (including a mower which I no longer have). but the batteries only last a few years . Already looking at replacing cells. I’ll ju
I have a three year old HRN216 and when I heard they were dropping mower production, I quickly purchased a new HRX217 for a back up just in case. I'm good for life! I've had nothing but Honda for over thirty years...
Had a Honda mower for 20 years. Never a problem. Change the oil every 2-3 years. Just use 5w-30, same as in car. Best lawn mower I've ever had. Still runs and mows like new.
I am not surprised you have experienced that level of reliability. Honda is notorious for high quality. The main things are sharpen/replace blade, change oil, and change the air filter. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Good for you... I hate assholes like yourself that have to put in their $0.02 on a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the item they own.... Your mower is NOT the same one in question. That's like me sayin, "ya I had a 1994 f150 with a 300 straight 6 and a 5 speed and she was loyal as can be. Too bad for you guys and yer cam phaser issues nowadays." STFU
26 years here. Runs great, only issue was carb needed replaced once because ethanol killed it. Had no power. I truly believe this Honda walk behind will outlast me.
I have an older Honda too. Simply a great mower, but like nearly every company these days, they’re putting out cheaper crap and charging more and more for it. Now Honda is not even making mowers anymore. Thanks politicians for ruining everything. Don’t even get me start d on those new Ego mowers that cost as much as a used car. Hold onto that older mower. I’ll never get rid of mine, I’ll just keep fixing it.
My thoughts exactly! Ironically, many of the mowers for sale are late model. I assume they are affected by hard starting due to this issue. I could totally see someone trying to pawn off a troubled high dollar mower for a substantial discount without revealing the main problem. Thank you for watching! @@averagejoevideo9556 Honda mower is failed precisely because it has a plastic gear that's why it sucks and we need to get rid of all machines of that type
I bought one of these a year ago and a month later the dealer agreed to replace it with another one. It had the same problem. I found another dealer nearby who kept it for the winter and successfully fixed the problem. It now starts right up and works well.
I am glad to hear you got the issue resolved. It sounds like you have two great dealers. The first dealer that was willing to replace it should be commended. Most dealers would just make you wait for the repair. The second dealer who repaired the replacement unit after you bought it somewhere else should also be commended. Thanks for watching! I have a 30+ year old Honda HRM (early plastic deck)! I think they must have decided that they were making them too good and were forced to make them cheeper...
youre right I had one of those for decades and bought a metal deck cheaper one and it lasted five years and rusted out, I have the top line Nexite deck now and its a smooth runner that never stumbles in any grass.
I briefly had an HRM215, excellent machine but the machine wasn't well cared for when I got it and it was exposed to sun and weather where the deck was becoming brittle. I had sold it but the person who bought it from me said it wasn't working correctly, so I bought it back through a free lawn mowing (I sold it for what the lawn mowing costs) and I took it apart, kept the engine and handles and tossed the deck. The engines on those were a GXV140 and the new ones now sport a GCV model of engine, so yes, they did get a little cheaper.
I am an owner of a early HRM 21 inch Honda mower. It’s a metal deck mower and it still runs flawlessly. The only issue was replacing the rear drive wheels and the axle bushings. I had to make my own axle bushing because Honda didn’t have any left in inventory and my bushings work much better than the original. I bought this mower new and plan to keep it going as long as I need it. So far around 30 years of service. There is no comparison between this mower and what Honda sells now.
I'm so thankful for this video. I bought that HRX217 a week or two ago and used it once. I tried to use it this past weekend and about yanked my arm out of the socket & broke part of the plastic pull handle. I pulled the spark plug out thinking it was hydro locked from being flooded etc. I called the place I bought it & explained what it's doing. They immediately said bring it in & we will fix it. They knew exactly what the issue is without seeing it. She said there's a serial number list & they should of caught it & fixed it before it was sold. I had the same model mower for a number of years before & loved it. They must of got the new part in the supply system now. Thanks again.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Here's a couple FYI's. Honda did send out a serial number list of what they think are the affected serial numbers to dealers. Mine was NOT on the list & the dealer confirmed they have seen others come in with the same issue that weren't on the list either. On a second note, I asked the dealer what his opinion was on electric mowers (which I did NOT want). He said "I always ask customers if they have had an electric mower & what their experiences were on them". He went on to say "99% of them say "It's just Ok" which is a polite way of saying they aren't that thrilled with them & are looking for another gas mower. That verified my personal opinion.
@@averagejoevideo9556 The dealer that replaced the cam on mine said it's about a two hour job. I'm sure they've had lots of practice since this problem started showing up.
Yep, both of my 217's I bought a month ago are hard to start now. Trying to figure out if Home Depot will return them. Local shop says it can take months and months before they can fix it as there's no replacement parts available right now. What a big pain in that butt. Thanks for posting the video update.
I bought a 217 earlier this year and after cutting a 20’ x 40’ piece of grass to show my wife it would not start. Pulled hard, etc. Returned to dealer and was told it was a bad crank. They assembled another for me and this one as been good ,so far. I will stay tuned, thanks.
If it was a Briggs, Kohler or even an old Tecumseh, this would not be a difficult repair. I repair all makes, Honda is the *worst* to disassemble and repair.
Interesting. I am assuming that the timing would need to be set following this repair or at the minimum careful disassembly to ensure the timing was not changed.
I just replaced the cam on a Honda and it wasn’t that bad. I don’t do it everyday but I’m a tech in a Home Depot rental and it was one of our rental units. The day after I finished it the stop sale and legal lock happened!
Agree. It reminds me of getting into the dash of a 1980's VW Rabbit. It was like a jigsaw puzzle and we didn't have cell phone cameras back then. Putting the thing back together could take several attempts.
… they’re going to quit making small ICE’s … - that’s the report I read last Fall - all based on EPA standards on pollution … I assume a big switch to battery-powered whatever … I’m not against battery power - I AM against I’ll-conceived ideas and plans that are poorly thought-out and carried-out anyway … 🙄😖😡👎
I had one of these that had the retail stop sale cited camshaft issue. This was my first Honda mower so I just thought it was a normal odd quirk. From the day I first ran it, it would intermittently act like the engine was "hydro locked" when I attempted to start it. It did not happen every time I attempted to start. It would literally lock-up to the point that if I were to of pulled the starter rope any harder it would of broken the rope or the plastic cover housing the rope recoil mechanism. I also noticed that if I just let it set a second or two and then slowly, firmly and steadily pulled the starter rope the feeling of the hydro-locked engine would fade, the engine would free up, and then the engine would start normally. Anyway, last week I by chance saw the stop sale notice thing being talked about in a video, found a copy of the notice to read myself and immediately realized I had an affected HRX217 mower. So rather than go through the hassle of having to wait weeks or a month or more during the summer mowing season for a warranty engine repair I just returned it to Home Depot for a refund just two days before their 90 day purchase return policy expired. I then the same day went to a Toro dealer and bought a TimeSaver as I have a large-ish lawn. By the way Home Depot no longer sells the TimeSaver in stores and have a two week delivery wait if you buy one from them at homedepot.com. This whole thing was super disappointing as that Honda mower other than the camshaft issue was awesome - so light, powerful and the hydro-static drive was the fastest and best working of any mower I've owned or tried.
It is very disappointing, but I am glad to hear you were able to just get a refund. As you stated, this is the mowing season and who wants to wait weeks for a repair? You were lucky that you purchased it from Home Depot. Unfortunately, Lowe's no longer allows returns once the unit has gasoline in it. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
Thanks for posting this. Mine is exactly the same and I've had trouble deciding whether I have the "real" issue. Every time I start it, I pull it gently to feel out whether it's difficult. If it doesn't give me resistance, I pull normally. If it feels hydro-locked, I slow down and it works ok.
Thanks for bringing this to light. I just bought a new HRX217 and used it for only 2 mows before the electric start and recoil would not budge upon the 3rd mow. Yeah, it dang near ripped my arm off my shoulder. I already have a torn rotator cuff in that same shoulde so, you can imagine how great that felt when the recoil would not budge halfway thru the pull! The authorized repair shop has tried 4 times to fix it. I am really surprised they didn’t know about this cam issue or that Honda apparently has not told them (or me) about this. I paid $1200 for this POS and I just want my money back. I’ll stick with my 2015 Toro SR which just continues to run and run while starting on the first pull every single time I’ve used it. I will tell the shop about this information in your video and also call Honda to get my money back. Thanks!
I am so sorry to hear you experienced this issue, especially with a torn rotator cuff. One of the reasons I made this video is to bring awareness to the issue. I don’t want to see anyone get hurt. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates on this issue.
Here's an update on my mower. I went back to the authorized repair shop and he said the Honda rep told them about this cam issue just this past Friday. This was after nearly 8 weeks in the shop with no idea how to repair it. I went back to the big box store I got it from and despite it being beyond the 90 day return period, they gave me full store credit. Would have preferred my cash back, but I thought store credit was better than waiting for a repair or engine replacement and then not getting what it's worth in a private sale. This was my very first Honda, so this was about as bad an experience with a new product as you can get. Just glad it is over!
I almost bought a Honda because I figured they would last forever. After reading your comment, I bought a Toro instead and I'm anxiously waiting for it to be delivered.
had my HRN216 for over 3 years and my problem is that as of yesterday when changing vbelt for drive is when i found out just how cheap honda was with the rear wheel bearings. nylon used instead of metal and nothing left
Me too...replacing the drive belt is a hassle....took it in to a shop....90 bucks plus 15 for the belt. never again. I will buy a cheapie big box mower next time. I can fix those myself.
@@averagejoevideo9556 far too much disassembly for a walk-behind. The drive pulley is partially exposed but the engine pulley is covered by the bag/mulch diverter shroud. Has to be benched to replace the belt. Even a small branch can foul, jump or snap the belt.
I had mine replaced and I think the repair is so invasive that now I have other issues with the mower. It smokes a little bit. The cut is uneven. it’s at the dealer as we speak.
These companies source all the components from all over the world. Whoever can make it the cheapest. They slap their name on it and charge you top dollar for owning a Honda.
I have a HRX 217 that is about 4-5 years old. First 2 years I had issues where the mower would not start and took it to a service center which worked on Honda mowers. They said that the valves inside the engine was stuck, due to ‘bad gas’ and varnished the valves. Well I had new gas so this I found hard to believe. Since I this happen twice, Honda themselves said they would not cover any further repair for this problem, since they also said ‘bad gas’ so user error. The mower technician had recommended putting a cap or two of Sea Foam into each gallon of gas, to help avoid the problem. I was skeptical that this would solve the problem, HOWEVER IT DID!!!! Since I started adding Sea Foam to my gas for the mower, we have NOT had any further issues with starting of the mower. Give this a try, nothing to loose except for price of can of Sea Foam, which will last a long time using only 1-2 caps of it per gallon of gas. In 2022 on UA-cam that Honda was going to discontinue the push mower entirely. I asked this of the mower service center that has worked on mine for common maintaining of the mower and they said they were receiving the same information. So wait and see the outcome, especially since it appears that many of the manufactures are moving to all electric style mowers. Good luck to all the Honda Mower owners!! (It has been the best gas mower we have owned)
Thank you for the information! I have heard many positives about Seafoam but I have never actually tried it myself. It must be a good product. It’s the same issue that some Briggs & Stratton engines have, Plastic cam, and the compression release pin and spring fails and smashes its self to pieces.
Me too! I have a 2 year old TORO with a Briggs and Straton engine and it has been a nightmare. The first few months it was ok, after that it kept surging and not running at full power, if I stopped to take a break etc. it wouldn't start or it would sputter then stop! I've had it in 4 times the last 2 were at a authorized Toro dealer and they finally replaced the carburetor it ran for about 10 min then sputtered and stalled and couldn't restart! Toro "used" to be the king of mowers, I wish electric mower manufactures would hurry up with the battery technology so the batterys last longer on a charge!
Briggs and Stratton engines have the same problem. I have a Husqvarna YTH22V46 riding mower, and had a problem with the engine “freezing up” at start. This prevented me from being able to start the mower. Started trouble shooting the battery, the starter, and valve adjustments. Started doing some research and found the compression release on the camshaft to be a common problem with B&S engines. Thankfully, I had the warranty to have it repaired. At this time, Briggs and Stratton has not taken responsibility for this defect.
Exactly the issue I had with my HRX217 that I ordered from Home Depot in May 2023. Initial start was fine & ran it for approx. an hour with no issues. I adjusted the handle height before 2nd use & then tried to pull the cord to start but could only pull it partially out then jammed (like it was caught on something). Took it to local Honda dealer (as I've owned several HRX 217 models over the years & reputable dealer with high quality service personnel imo) to see if maybe there was a quick fix & hopefully nothing serious. Honda Dealer repair mgr. advised that nothing was wrong w/recoil assembly & so no quick fix & likely some type of engine issue. As a result, elected to just return to Home Depot for full refund as not gonna pay $1K for a mower that needs its engine disassembled to try & identify the issue after only 1 hour of use.
You are very fortunate that you could still return it. Unfortunately, Lowe's does not allow returns once fuel is in the unit. This makes no sense because how are you supposed to know a piece of gas powered equipment works properly if you aren't allowed to put fuel in it? This is the main advantage of purchasing power equipment from Home Depot instead of Lowe's. My personal preference is a dealership, but that is not always feasible. Thank you for watching! @@averagejoevideo9556 Yeah, Home Depot is generally very good when it comes to returns "in store" (as long as done before 30 days return window expires), however some of their online personnel are not that knowledgeable of return policies. Don't shop much at Lowe's but good to know so thanks for heads up. I ended up purchasing a TORO Super Recycler walk behind (from a dealer) with specs comparable to the Honda HRX 217 and very happy with it so far.
I also had the issue with my HRX217 that I ordered from Home Depot in April 2023. It ran for about 3 hours and the starter rope became extreamly difficult to pull and finally it was impossible to start. Luckily I purchased it at Home Depot and and received a full refund.
@@TugSkipper45 When did you make the return on your April 2023 purchase? I'm in a similar boat and am unsure whether to get it repaired or get something else?
I've grown up with a Honda HR214SX and currently have one in my shed. I also currently own an HRC216HXC and a HRX217HYC. They are all good machines. The camshaft on these newer mowers is a little more involved than on my older HRX with the GCV190. The GCV200 (and 170) engines are actually a little harder to get to the cam as it's inside the crank case next to the crankshaft. Honda has made these engines as a pushrod OHV design not unlike its commercial GX(V) series.
My HRX217 was an absolute bear to start for the first 2 seasons. I’m a bigger guy and it would rip the handle out of my hand. It friggin hurt! It still started second or third pull but I had to bugger up my hand just to get it going. Now it starts first pull every time except after coming out of winter storage…. and it’s no longer difficult to turn over.
Interesting. I am wondering if this camshaft issue is more widespread than originally thought. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Thanks for this video. I checked the garage and indeed I have the model in question. I then found the manual and see that I never registered it. Needless to say it’s now in the mail!

I've had my Honda walk behind lawnmower approximately 15 years. Change the oil, clean the air filter, replace the spark plug, and sharpen the blade, after running it out of gas at the end of the mowing season every year, all cheap insurance maintenance, then store it for the winter. In the spring, fill up with fresh gas, give a 5 second squirt of starting fluid into the gas, set the choke, 2 pulls on the rope and it starts right up. Never seen a repair shop. I guess they must had made them better back then back in the day. That's too bad.
I have the HRX217HZA K6 model purchased last October. Used it about 5 times, then electric start would not crank or rope pull was crazy hard. Called my dealer, he said another bad camshaft assembly, bring it in. He mentioned at the time something about Honda changing suppliers on the yhis camshaft part. Parts were backordered, received it back 1st week of January. Broke it out this spring, right now humming right along. At the time, dealer offered to refund my money, told him no way I wanted to keep the mower. Dealer said the 5 year warranty will keep me covered
Interesting! So, I wonder how many warranty claims have been made for this issue before Honda considered it to be a widespread problem, thus issuing a stop sale notice. I suspect there has to be thousands of claims. I don't blame you for keeping the mower once the issue was fixed. As your dealer told you, the five year warranty will keep you covered. Have had my HRX217 for 12 years or more. Had an electric start and never used it, pull starts like butter, and still does. Sad that is no longer the case for the newer ones. Hope mine lasts forever! When mine was new, had nothing but problems until the defective "thermal wax choke" was diagnosed. For a $700 push mower, I think Honda could do alot better in the testing dept. before they offer them to the consumer.
Bought a hrx217 in feb 2023 the 3rd time i started it had the very hard pull issue. I bought it from a good ODPE dealer not home depot they took care of the bad cam issue under warranty. So far it has been fine.

Still using 2 hand me down Hondas from the 90s. Alternating between them every other week. Still run great. Never had a problem. My roto tiller is a honda from the same time, excellent machine.
I dropped my HRX off at the shop this weekend. Guy was well aware of the issue but said mine is the first one with this problem that he has had in the shop. He also said that his Honda rep will be very interested as they are still collecting serial numbers trying to pinpoint the affected mowers so no word yet on when a fix will be issued or when he can start selling these residential mowers again.
It's been a month so I called the shop Monday to check on the mower status and the lady said it the order was still open as in not complete so I called Honda CS. They said they have no updates to share but would have someone contact me. Sure enough I get call this morning from Honda and the lady says they have the replacement parts on hand at corporate and they will fedex them to my local shop today.
Got my mower back last weekend after 2 months . The dealer said they had to fix it twice. First they replaced the cam and then they had to replace a compression gear(?) I half think they were using that as an excuse as to why it took so long since they got the part a month ago. Luckily there are a handful of shops around us because I won't be going back to those guys.
I tried my newly repaired brand new mower out a couple weekends ago for the first time and the blade engage was acting funny and it sounded terrible. When I killed it and tried to restart it, what do you know, the pull cord wouldn't budge. Called Honda and told them something it still messed up but I wasn't going back to the same shop and was taking it another shop nearby and I dropped it off last weekend. Got a call from Honda today and they are replacing the entire engine under warranty because the other place didn't reassemble the blade stop system correctly and it jacked the engine. An utter mess but Honda service has really been on the ball on getting things handled.
A good push mower for home consumer use is hard to find now days unless you buy a older used one. A lot of basic side discharge units are really cheap made. They usually have a thin deck (or plastic) with no height adjustment, no throttle or choke controls. Its kind of sad when you look at the selection of choices at Lowes or Home Depot.
Your comments are spot on with regard to finding a good homeowner grade push mower. I was shocked to see the prices of lower quality push mowers at Lowe's and Home Depot. I could not get over how cheaply made they were. I remember purchasing a MTD Yard Machines mower at Home Depot for $150 nearly 15 years ago. That mower did very well until it was finally worn out. But, for the price point, it had good longevity. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
@@averagejoevideo9556, I currently have an MTD Yard Machines push mower I bought at Menards sometime around 2007. I have a half-acre and I’ve kept the blade sharpened or replaced as needed in addition to changing the air filter and oil annually and spark plug as needed. Beginning last year, it uses more oil during the summer than it holds and struggles to cut. I fear it’s at the end, but I remain committed to running it to its last chuff before getting something new. My quandary is not unique: I don’t trust the quality or longevity of new mowers, and not interested in battery-electric (although Ryobi 40V would be my choice for going along with my current Ryobi mini tiller).
Tell be about it, I purchased a Heavy Duty Snapper Mower 20 years ago here in Florida, and it mowed like a Champ, then the B&S Engine locked up, I wanted another Snapper, but they have fell on hard times and are not building them like they use to, so I ordered a new B&S replacement Engine, and when it arrived and I picked it up, I thought they forgot to put the Engine in the Box, and when I opened it I was shocked to see that it was made with 80% Plastic, even the Carburetor is made entirely from PLASTIC, what a Pile of JUNK., I only wish I would have kept the old Locked up B&S engine and purchased a Rebuild Kit.
This happened to my toro time master (b&s). Plastic cam gear broke in the first 2 weeks leaving it to almost ripping my arm off when trying to start. Had to have it fixed under warranty. Took over 6 weeks. Plastic can gears are a travesty.
Thank you for the warning. Convinced me to not get one. Just wow, wow. Honda is really struggling. As much as I love my HRR216, I even considered picking up one current gen from Home Depot / Lowes as an extra. No more.
You are quite welcome. Believe it or not, I am starting to wish I hadn't purchased one of these units myself. But, it is not returnable. Unfortunately, once you put gas in a piece of equipment, Lowe's will not accept it for return. I thought about taking it back though. It's very sad for Honda and unfortunately it is yet another example of how quality doesn't matter any longer. It seems that manufacturers are only interested in sales volume. Thank you for watching! @@averagejoevideo9556 I hope they fix it and you get some value / happy mowing with it. Honda should do the right thing for their customers. I so much wanted one of the Honda snow blowers when they were still making them. Its another example of engineering kind of gone wrong. Honda still cuts great, lightweight and comfortable to mow - for sure. Totally agree with you - the quality isn't there and Honda can't make enough money and the market is squeezed with electric mowers. In this case, they didn't make the part but its still in a whole a Honda lawn mower. Good luck joe!
My HHR216 I brought new in 2015 is still going strong, although it's had help the last 1 1/2 summers with a small 30" Club cadet rider I brought. What a way for Honda to end it's reputation with a new mower like this.
Be a little bit careful...While you or I am strong enough to pull against full compression, we're also strong enough, to break the starter rope, or even more likely, the nylon pawl that engages with the starting cup. If that breaks, you will have to replace the starter assembly. Make sure you pull fast enough, to avoid "pull back", because of the advanced ignition timing sparking before top dead center. At the very least, it pulls the cord handle out of your hand, which sometimes hurts. It also greatly increases the likelihood of damaging the pawl. If it breaks the rope, there's a possibility of winding back and damaging the recoil spring.
That's a great point! I was actually wondering if the resistance on the starter rope would break the starter mechanism if someone pulled hard enough. Several people have commented that their electric start couldn't turn over the engine. I am guessing this could potentially result in a burned up starter. Thank you for watching! I have a GSV216PDA commercial mower. The first time I started time it this year, the first two pull yanked my hand very hard. I thought oh no the engine must be seized, but it was rotating. So that was relief. I bought the mower in 2011, this has been an issue for over a decade.
I have read in forums that earlier models had bad camshafts. But, in this case it's quite surprising that owners are experiencing cam shaft issues within the first several hours of use. Thank you for watching! Please subscribe for updates on this.
When Honda stopped selling mowers solely through their dealer network things went bad. Big box stores like Home Depot cheapened the brand and it shows in their quality. Hondas decision to stop building lawnmowers is no big deal at this point.
That's a very valid point!! I believe this is the reason that Stihl refuses to sell in the big box stores. To a big box store, this is merely a product they no longer carry...happens all the time. However, to a dealership this could be detrimental. With that being said, most power equipment dealers carry Honda in addition to other brands, but still losing the mower lineup will affect the bottom line. Thank you for watching! Hooray for plastic cams with plastic compression release, instead of making these parts out of steel. But... at least Honda saved 75 cents per cam while building these stupid GCV engines, lol. Just like with their cars, Honda is delivering substandard products while surfing the wave of their former reputation nowadays. Caveat emptor!
@@averagejoevideo9556 I bailed out on a new mower with a Honda GCV engine after reading it has a timing belt and plastic cam / compression release, so luckily I don't have a horse in the race. Thanks for keeping everyone else who has bought these lemons updated, though. Brand reputation and/or loyalty is not always a wise choice, fellas! Honda sure stuck their H logo on a turd on this one.
Honda makes the most reliable and long-lasting cars in the World. Granted, in my opinion, they messed up their bulletproof 6 cylinder J7 engine with variable cylinder management, but you can delete that feature with a simple added device (VCM muzzler), which is what I did. I think maybe the newer models don't have the problems with it.
Honda long lasting cars are history, have you drive one recently.?! Toyota its way advanced cars with quality and hybrids design over honda. They are cheap company now… unfortunately
tried to buy one this past weekend but could not find any at the big boxes. Figured they were all sold out. Now i understand. Glad I couldn't/didn't buy one. Thanks for the video.
@@averagejoevideo9556 been working fine-I must have gotten it fixed right when all this started-the original part was on back order and I talked to honda and they said the engineers are redesigning the part-took about a month and a half to get it fixed
Mine was hard to pull, when I first got mine, hurt my fingers, and rope was flying back, but, it’s ok now. My dealers says mowers will be made in Mexico now
They had a bad batch of cams on the Honda IZY's a while back with faulty decompressors, they would pull over and start ok sometimes and then out of the blue they would try to rip your arm off. lol.. They replaced those cams under warranty. Seems like an ongoing issue tbh.
Interesting…so this problem has occurred before. I am sure it will be a matter of Honda setting up a recall or repair campaign. Although I am curious what will happen with the unsold units in store inventory.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Yes it did, though I'm betting they will send out a bulletin to their dealers, and tell them to repair them on a Fix per Fail basis. I could be wrong though. 🔧
@@TGMForum the fix per fail basis is definitely a possibility. The only issue is if it were to fail and cause injury it could be a safety issue as well. So, there is a possibility they will issue a recall and replace all serial numbers affected by the bad camshaft assembly.
@@averagejoevideo9556I would agree, Average Joe. Even in this discussion thread, some have reported being injured. Also, some have reported the problem did not occur at first. Does Honda want to risk having someone get seriously injured during the first time their mower fails now that this is a known issue? Not quite as serious, but this would be like Ford doing a "fix on fail" with their exploding Pinto gas tanks way back when.
I bought a new HRN216 in May and had this same exact problem in June. I called my local Honda dealer and they immediately suspected the cam assembly. The part was backordered and it took about 3 weeks to get it for the repair. Mower runs great now. Just hoping it's a permanent fix and no other surprises. Ironically, I was debating between getting an EGO battery powered mower or a reliable gas mower. Decided to go with Honda because of their reputation for high quality and was wary of battery lifespan on the EGO. My last cheap Yardman mower lasted 20 years! They definitely don't make them like they used to.
Have a 35 year old Honda thats still going & bought a new one 3 or 4 months ago, still in box to replace old one when it quits. Never thought Honda would make a poor mower. Hope I can return new one. Thanks for video.
Where did you purchase the new one? If you purchased it from Lowe's, you only have 30 days to return it, provided there has never been fuel in it. If you purchased it from Home Depot, I believe you have 90 days but I am not sure. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Update: the big box hardware store did finally refund my money ,even though it was over the 30 day limit. Honda also contacted me a second time and said they changed their decision and did reimburse me for the maintenance I paid for repair. From there I went green, and I am very pleased with my 82 volt electric mower, does the whole lawn with never yet draining the whole battery.(and it is light weight)
All you guys and gals going green. Give it time and see what issues you have with your so-called green machines. I'm not on board with battery operated lawn equipment. You all still need coal burning power plants to charge your battery. So just how green is it really
Had the same problem with 18.5 HP Briggs and Stratton. Replaced the cam assembly, worked great for several weeks, then apparently it broke again. Sold the mower for parts. Now I need to check the model # of the Honda walk-behind that I bought earlier this year
That stinks. The trouble is if the part has a design flaw, then without re-design it will likely fail again. It is my understanding this is purely a manufacturing issue. Let's hope this is the case. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
There, at present, is no serial number range yet on defective cam units, the stop sale is effectively for all Honda walk behind mowers. That's why they issued a stop sale for all mowers...here in California anyway. The potential for injury lawsuits is the reason they are halting sales...btw, you can still buy a Honda mower but the dealer assumes injury liability if they sell you one and you are injured as a result of the camshaft issue.
I bought a new HRX 217, used it once with no problems, then the second time I went to use it, the engine was locked up tight. The electric start could not turn over the engine and you couldn’t pull the start cord at all. Just got it back from the repair shop and Honda warranty covered the cam assembly getting replaced but it took over a month because the repair shops are so busy and had to order the the parts. Hope it doesn’t happen again!
I am glad to hear they remedied the issue for you. I am not surprised you waited that long for the repair. Shops are overwhelmed and parts are constantly delayed. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for more updates!
@@eaglescout1974 that stinks but fortunately you could return it. Lowe’s does not usually allow power equipment to be returned once their has been fuel in it. I don’t understand how you are supposed to know if it functions properly, but that’s their policy. Home Depot on the other hand allows returns after fuel is in the unit, but I am not sure how many days after purchase. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe for updates on this issue.
That’s not the only problem. We bought a brand new hrx217, did proper break-in, never overloaded it. Once the engine cooled and I restarted it, O found out that the compression release has broken as you stated, and it started burning oil. I pulled the plug and inspected the cylinder, to find that the cylinder was damaged all the way around. I am assuming that the rings were gapped incorrectly from the factory. I don’t know what has happened to honda’s quality, but it definitely isn’t good!
That's crazy! This is definitely not typical of Honda. Did you take it to an authorized dealer for repair? Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Honda issued offical recall in USA today 9/14/23. It won't let me post the link but it's on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website, recall number 23-287. I called my local dealer and he said it is ALL HRX217 and HRN216 mowers they have in stock on hold and then others between the dates shown on the recall notice, from May 2022 to June 2023. My dealer said they are waiting on the part, to be able to fix mowers customers have brought in as well as their inventory so they can once again sell them. Mine has a waiting list for those wanting to buy, which is me :)
Thanks for bringing the stop-sale info to us! I think I have the same problem with my HRX217HYA. Only has happened a half dozen times since purchase of mower last August. I can always get around the problem by engaging the blade when starting. Anyone see the same?
No problem! I just want to make as many people aware of the issue as possible. Not only is it inconvenient, it poses a potential safety hazard. That’s interesting you are able to get around the problem by engaging the blade during starting. Hopefully someone else chimes in on this to confirm whether or not it may be a universal, temporary resolution to the issue. Thanks for watching! Please like, subscribe, and share for updates on this Honda mower issue.
Here is something…..I have a HRX217VKA that I bought back in 2019. The owners manual states that the blade control lever must be pulled back and held against the handle bar when starting and running the mower. Do the newer Honda mowers start the engine first and then engage the blade? The pull of the ripcord has never been really difficult but there is some notable resistance during engine start.
Bought the HRX 217HYA in May 2023. After a few mows the cord would not pull. I started engaging the blade control level on start up and have not had issues since.
@@Ghostrider-71 fixed my comment above to indicate that I have a HYA not a VYA. My mower has a blade control level feature that allows the engine to run while blade doesn’t turn when that lever is not engaged. It does not need to be engaged when starting (normally). Took the mower to dealer that I purchased from. They needed to tear it apart and take some pictures for Honda before proceeding with the fix. I hope they have the part(s) needed so it’s not out of commission for the rest of the summer. Luckily I can get by without it.
I've just bought a Honda self-propelled roller model to add to my very similar Honda that is 28years old and still going strong. Serviced every year most often, brilliant machine.
How low have the mighty fallen bought a Honda walk behind mower in 2005 1/4 acre big frost heave yearly rocks would come out of ground every spring every time I mowed I would hit one you couldn’t see them due to design needed new air filter every 2 years they and cover would fall off didn’t think it was going to last so only changed oil every other year never put a spark plug in it never adjusted the safety and drive cables was still running when sold house in 2022 gave it to neighbors kid at the end of every use shut off fuel supply and ran out of gas
This is definitely not typical of Honda quality. But, as I mentioned in the video it comes down to a part supplier issue. The tricky part is creating a repair campaign and addressing the issue at hand. Correcting the problem is not a 10 minute repair. This is so unfortunate, especially considering the production of Honda lawn mowers will end in Sept. 2023. Please be sure to like and subscribe for more updates! Thanks for watching!
A sales rep told me it was only the blade-stop versions. He still had the HRN216 pkc and vka to sell. So? And I bought a HRN216 pkc 2 days ago from another place that are authorized Honda dealers. WTF!
Interesting! I am surprised he is allowed to sell the other models. Even if they technically are not impacted by the camshaft issue, all HRN216 and HRX216 models were not allowed to be sold. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I want to get a new Honda because I hear how good they are. I really should just get a toro with a Honda engine because I also hear that they have transmission issues. I haven’t gotten a new lawn mower in over 14 years. I have a John Deere Js45 that has a Briggs 190cc 8.75 ft-lbs of torque Intek engine and it’s hard to start warm. If you prime it correctly at a cold start it starts on first couple pulls. When hot 20+ pulls……. The valve lash is in check but I’m not gonna take it to a shop for further diagnosis because it’s expensive. I’ll just keep my John Deere because you can still get parts for everything because John Deere is really good for that. Just a future engine swap may be in the question.
While I am not a technician, if you are having issues with the Briggs not restarting when warm, it is more than likely the ignition coil. My father had a Troy-Bilt with a Briggs Intek and it did the same thing. Apparently, when the engine is warm, the ignition coil is warm and the inside of the coil breaks down. It only breaks down when warm. Just a thought… Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates on this mower.
@@averagejoevideo9556I might try that. I also hear people say it could be the flywheel key but it usually starts could fine. So it’s probably the coil. Thanks for the information!
My 3 year old Toro mower with Honda engine works great. But I live in California, and the governor signed a bill that bans the sale of gas engine lawn mowers starting after 2024. So before the year is over I plan on buying one or two more lawn mowers, just to have for the future.
Got my HRX217HYA delivered last week - started up like butter on first attempt, like to rip my fingers off the second time as the pull handle shot back past the stop all the way to the housing. I could return it but I'm just going to drop it off at the repair shop and let them hold it until Honda gets a fix in and keep using my old mower.
Sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue. I agree with holding on to it and taking it to the repair shop. My concern would be if you happen to return it, you may not be able to purchase another one for quite a while or at all. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates on this!
Great video, thank you. I went in search of answers because on Sunday, I observed Home Depot (Tampa) forklifting the HRNs out of the public display area and hiding them in the back warehouse. I stopped them and asked why and how many? I was told "19 were going back to the manufacturer for rebuilding because they had been blowing up." Your explanation makes much more sense, thank you. Question, I ordered from Lowes a brand new HRX217VYA February 8th and it's been perfect for 5 months now (2-3 mows a week of 5,000 sq ft so probably 50-60 mows). Is there a window of serial numbers or beginning dates we know of with these bad cams? Thanks.
You are quite welcome! Thank you for watching! I am happy to hear that your HRX is still doing well. Honda has not released the serial numbers yet. As soon as I get any updates, I will be posting an update video. Please like and subscribe.
This is quite the timely video. I have an 11 or 12 year old HRX217HYA and bought another one back in the spring just because. I've noticed the new mower is definitely harder to start than my old one, and sometimes it's difficult to pull the starter cord. Other than that, I would say I love it. Overall it seems a bit more refined and the 200cc motor is definitely an upgrade over the older 190cc, at least in terms of performance. I guess it's too early to tell when it comes to longevity. Here's hoping Honda does something to address this issue. I did notice that everything seemed to suddenly be out of stock online and thought it seemed a bit weird.
Hopefully Honda does something soon to address the issue. The stop sale is obviously a necessary step but what happens next? I am looking forward to the 200cc engine. My old Honda has a 160cc engine so I am looking forward to the upgraded power. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe as I will be providing updates on this.
@@averagejoevideo9556I have liked and subscribed. Hopefully we won't have to lawyer up. Does this only affect starting? Based upon my experiences, I'm thinking yes. Once it's running everything seems great. I think you'll really like the new engine and mower.
I have the Canadian model version of your 12 year old unit. It's probably similar in age, and I like it as it's a bit quieter than my commercial HRC216HXC and does incredibly well at mulching.
Thanks for your video! Ironically I purchased my first Honda powered item about 3 years ago after nothing but good luck with Briggs & Stratton equipment for 40 years! It’s a Honda GCV 190 on a pressure washer that may or may not be effected by the recall as it is three years old. But so far so good! More irony…I’ve owned a few B&S flatheads that rarely broke. The last 3.5 horse ran for around 20 years with minor repairs. In fact I moved it to another deck after the first one rusted out. So 5 years ago I decided to replace it with a new Toro. My first self propelled. When I purchased it I had a choice of the tried and true flathead or the newer OHV (both B&S) and chose to move up from the 100+ year old flathead to the newer OHV. I decided to change the oil this year (B&S says only add oil) and found the oil contained metal dust. I’ll probably tear it down this fall after the grass quits growing in October.
All gas push lawn mowers (Honda or any others) will be replaced with full electric mowers with no loss of performance. Get ready. I've had three gas string trimmers and the electric trimmer is far superior in weight, performance and sound level. Push lawn mowers are next inline. It'll be a while for sit down lawn mowers.
You are right on this. The day is coming where gas powered mowers are no longer manufactured. The transition will begin with homeowner grade models and then commercial units. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I have no idea if my mower falls into this catagory. Its a craftsman bought at Lowes with a Honda engine. Its about 4 years old and after a 1 season of use I had to take the carb off and clean the jet because it was doing a little surging. The crappy ethanol gas caused that. Runs great now and been using seafoam in gas to help keep it clean. If i have anymore issues I will just throw it out and buy a 40volt electric mower.
I am not sure, however I suspect that it probably is not in this category. The reason I say this is because I am lead to believe this problem affects mowers built in 2022 and 2023. Since yours is 4 years old, you should be good. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Thanks for making this video. 👏👏👏 I have a 2023 HRX217K6HYAA bought in April of 2023. So I am definitely in the danger zone for this problem. I also have a 20 year old HRX217. The hydrostatic transmission finally gave out so I disconnected the transmission drive shaft from the wheels and use it as a push mower. Still works fine. But I wanted a functioning self propelled unit as I have well over an acre of mowing. So I bought this new HRX217. I didn't want to wait because of Honda stopping production of mowers this fall. I wouldn't say my new mower is easy to pull start although with a FIRM pull it usually starts on the first try. But it is not clear to me how hard is too hard and is a symptom of a flawed unit. Subscribed! 👍
If the new unit is not pulling your hand back when you try to start it, you don't have the issue. You will know because it takes so much force to pull it that you can hardly get the engine to turn over. Hopefully, you don't encounter this issue. Thank you for watching and subscribing.
@@averagejoevideo9556 Wow! Thank you so much for the kindness of a reply. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things stay as they are. The Honda engine was certainly not something I was expecting to have to be worried about when I bought the mower considering the outstanding 2 decade performance of my other HRX217 engine. 🤷♂️
I bought two Honda mowers two years ago because they were on clearance just before Christmas, gave one to my son-in-law and kept one in storage for a year without starting it. When my old mower gave up the ghost, I finally put the new one to use and it’s had a knock in the engine ever since I started it the first time, I would’ve taken it back, but it sat for a year in the box. The one I gave to my son-in-law works fine.
Interesting! Keep in mind that HRN models have a three year warranty and HRX models have a five year warranty. So, regardless if it sat for a year, you are still within your warranty to have it repaired for the engine knock. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I almost bought one a couple months ago. Never thought I'd go cordless but I started switching other OPE and liked it. Now all my OPE are cordless and none of it is under powered. Really like not storing gas now.
I can appreciate the idea of not storing fuel. There are many different points of view regarding battery vs. gas powered equipment. Thank you for sharing! Please like and subscribe.
I just bought a Honda HRN 216 VKA mower from a Honda dealer in Dartmouth, NS, Canada, yesterday, July 15, 2023! If they knew about this problem while selling them, I wonder if that makes them liable for not only the entire repair, but also any injuries that someone might get? I just used it for the first time today and found that I needed a bit more strength when pull starting, than my old cheap mower, but it still started. Not sure how happy I am that I bought a Honda, now....
From the stop sale notice you read, my HRS216VKA walk-behind (purchased Feb 2020) was not mentioned. Hopefully, that means that I should not have the defective cam assembly...
It is my understanding that the stop sale is because Honda has to determine exactly which serial numbers are affected within a particular model. My guess is that they will be able to trace it back to the manufacturing date.
I still mow every week with a 1968 lawn boy 2 cycle and a 1974 Jacobsen with a 3.5 Briggs. the lawn boy usually starts first pull and the Jacobsen 3 pulls.
I just bought an HRX217 in June (hard to find and got it from Aubuchon Hardware 45 mins away) and upon initial start and break-in run for 20 mins I had a puddle of oil on the driveway. This is before my first cut and already headed to a certified dealer/service location for warranty work! They fixed the issue under warranty. It was a head cover gasket. It's been running great and no issues with the start pull. Starts on 1st or 2nd pull. Fingers crossed I don't get this issue!
I am not surprised. The worst part is that manufacturers regularly pair their equipment with a Honda engine to help increase sales. The general public automatically assumes if their equipment has a Honda engine, it will run forever. Husqvarna used to offer the option of a Kohler engine or a Honda engine on their mowers. It's amazing how the Honda engine brand sold the equipment. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
So I bought one of these models back in April and paid 1100 dollars for it , even has the electric start option. I’m 6-2 230 lbs, and this is a pain to try to start, it wants to rip your arm out of the socket when trying g to start it. I bought this online just curious about how to go and get this repaired? Such a shame, HONDA use to be known for such high quality equipment.
I am sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue. Your best course of action is to find a Honda power equipment dealer in your area. Contact them about having the unit repaired. If you haven't already, take a moment and register your mower on the Honda website. This will make the warranty claim process much easier for your dealer. You will get a registration confirmation page. I would print the confirmation page and make a copy of your receipt because your dealer will need that info. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I have a Honda hr215 masters series , pretty sure it’s from 99 or 2000, but with normal oil changes and running often to not get old and crusty, it still runs great, turned it on in two pulls today after not running for over a month.
I have a Honda power washer that has this issue. After doing research it seems on the older models you can replace the cam gear and it has the tab and spring built in. I saw a Honda tech on here maybe you can answer for me if this is true? By the way pulling the cord after this fails is next to impossible. I got mine started but it took 15 minutes of hard work, arm and shoulder very sore afterwards. Be careful!!!
In 2018, I purchased a Honda HRX217SHYA. I recently damaged the transmission in a non-warranty situation. The transmission needs to be replaced with labor at a cost of $600-700. Do I repair and have a non-warranted Honda with nexite deck , versamow, Roto stop or pay an additional $300-$400 for a Honda HRX21K6HYA with a 5 year warranty IF and WHEN the stop sale order is lifted and Cam, etc issue identified and fixed? Thank you for your time and consideration.
This is certainly a dilemma. In terms of the damaged transmission, the cost you are stating makes sense because I believe the transmission itself is around $350-400 for the part. This does not include any miscellaneous parts that may also need to be replaced (bushings, seals, belt, etc.). So, by the time you figure in the labor it makes sense that the cost is that high. If it were me and you have another mower to use in the interim, I think I would hold on to the mower with the damaged transmission and attempt to purchase a new one with a warranty once the stop-sale is lifted and the camshaft problem is correct. If you are able to obtain a brand new unit, you still have the backing of a 5-year warranty. You will not have that kind of backing if you repair your old one. Now, if you are not able to wait it out or it simply takes way too long, then I would advise fixing the old mower if you like the way it cuts. Thank you for watching! Got this mower at Home Depot in May. I had the same problem, and yes it will rip your arm off. Honda support recommended removing the spark plug and pulling the rope a few times as a fix. I still had the problem and returned it to Home Depot for a refund. I went to Lowe’s the next day and purchased the same mower. It worked fine for the first mow but I had the same problem the next week. I returned this one to Lowe’s. Lowe’s was surprised that I had a problem with a Honda mower. Purchased a Cub Cadet…..all is good
I am very surprised that Lowe's allowed you to return it. I am also surprised that Honda support recommended that you remove the spark plug as a fix. Now, I fully understand if they had you remove the spark plug and pull the recoil to determine if the issue was camshaft related or recoil related. Thanks for watching! Other mower brands also used Honda engines. Are they subject to this issue? I have a fairly new Husqvarna mower with a Honda engine. Moreover, Briggs (and others) have a decompression device on the camshaft also. They seem to be able to make it work.
Much to my surprise, most modern small engines use some form of decompression device. It just so happens Honda has a bad batch of camshafts. At this time, I believe the only engines affected are the GCV170 and GCV200 but you are right, Honda engines are used on a plethora of equipment. Thanks for watching! i just replaced the cam in one of our rental units like 2 days before the stop order because of a hard pull if you know what you are doing and have your tools ready it takes about 1 hr to do the cam and reset the valves it took me about 1-1/2 hr because i was working at a leisurely pace but its not a bad job worst part is putting the engine back on the deck its so easy to cross thread aluminum you need to go slow at that part it helps to do it on a bench
Thank you for the info! This is good to know. Others have stated that Honda warranty rates the job at 1-1/2 hours so that makes sense. I guess like any other repair job, if you do it enough, you become more efficient. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I am sorry to hear you've experienced the issue. It's interesting that they still have Honda lawn mowers on the showroom floor. But, I guess as long as they don't sell them to the consumer, they are still okay. I suppose it is possible those units have already been checked for the issue, but still. Thanks for watching! So the dealer completed the work within four days. They replaced the camshaft assembly, 14100-Z9M-000. Not sure if this assembly will be any better than the original. Fingers crossed.
Just got my Honda mower on 5/29/23 NO ONE SINGLE ISSUES starts on the first pull!!! So glad I was able to purchase the mower of my dreams before they pulled them from them from the shelves!!! RIP TO THE LEGEND OF MOWING MACHINES!!!
How fortunate for you! I got my HRX217VKA on 5/9 and it's in the shop due to this issue. Service dealer cannot find the necessary parts to repair. Meanwhile the grass keeps growing.
My 10 yr old Honda mower starts easily with one easy pull every time but once, took two pulls. My wife can easily start it, too. A new plug every other year, and keep the oil topped off. It runs great.
I bought this in April 2023, have had no problems but the bag keeps falling off. I usually go bagless but many people bag. Got mine thru Home Depot but it was shipped to me not sure if it came from Honda or HD
Interesting! I have not heard of this issue. Is there a problem where the two notches are cut to hold the bag frame? Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
My Troy Bilt riding mower has a Briggs and Stratton Intek engine. Many of them have a problem with the decompression cam breaking. Locally that's an $800 repair, although the kit is only about $100
It’s crazy how the high cost of labor makes many of these repairs cost-prohibitive unless you can repair it yourself. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe.
They more than likely have them in storage due to the stop sale. There is a possibility there will be new Honda mowers for sale once this issue is resolved. Thanks for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
I heard from a Honda rep in a Ocala fl store they are talking about maybe coming back . The person said only HRX, and HRN . No talks about HRCs which are my personal favorite
I heard a similar thing. What i heard is that Honda is going to contiuue with the GX160 140 etc. but not the GCV160 or HRN or HRX (or so) vertical engines. I just subbed as you seem to have you fingure on the pulse. As I only fix off warrenty products i have not seen the new version you talk about. Bruce from Canada.
I am not surprised they will still make the commercial engines. My Honda two stage snow blower has a commercial grade engine and it has been super reliable. Other than basic maintenance, I've done nothing to it. Thanks for the sub! I will be posting updates as soon as I learn more.
Thank you for being so honest and helpful, that just made me change my mind about it, so I was thinking about acquiring one for my own use. Forget about it ! 🙏🏻
I just bought a HRX217 and Honda has assured everyone that everything they are selling now has been updated or they have pushed their inventory from more recent manufacturing beyond the issue.
I've got a Husqvarna with a Honda engine and we have zero problems with it. I've got a 40 year old Pressure Washer that has a honda mower and it still works like a champ.
Also, please update the comments if you learn anything else about this.
I was shocked at how the customer said it took his shoulder off and out of socket

I was interested in a Honda engine before the announcement of stopping production of gas engines. I have a Briggs & Scrapem with a bad cam in a single cylinder rider, still works.. Warranty work never pays decent, regardless of the manufacturer.
China😂
I was a ford dealer tech for 15 years . Flat rate time on mower repair ? When people buy something new and it has a problem they wonder why nobody wants to do the warranty work . Nobody wants to work for free.
The small gas engines are definitely under attack from the battery operated tools. But if your lawn is big enough, gas still makes more sense.

I have a three year old HRN216 and when I heard they were dropping mower production, I quickly purchased a new HRX217 for a back up just in case. I'm good for life! I've had nothing but Honda for over thirty years...

Never a problem.
Change the oil every 2-3 years.
Just use 5w-30, same as in car.

Good for you... I hate assholes like yourself that have to put in their $0.02 on a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the item they own.... Your mower is NOT the same one in question. I bought a Craftsman mower in 1985. I've mated it twice to a newer deck and that engine refuses to die.
so you have had a HRN216 and or HRX217K mower for 20 years?
26 years here. Runs great, only issue was carb needed replaced once because ethanol killed it. Had no power. I truly believe this Honda walk behind will outlast me.
i have had mine nearly 16 years and it has never missed a beat ,money VERY well spent .

Still have my plastic deck hr173
I am glad the video helped. Be sure to check out my other Honda mower videos. Thank you for watching and please consider subscribing!
The part you are referring to is on the camshaft, you have to completely disassemble the engine (split the case in two) to access this part!

The old Briggs flat head with primer start are about bulletproof.
Maybe not quite as fuel efficient as over head valve but a darn good engine.
Agree
Small engine tech. Don't like working on Honda
Thanks!

Yikes!

I looked at a new push reel mower Menards yesterday, it was about $100.
I'm more sad about my 50k plastic smart car as I sip my smart water and consult my smart phone as to a way out of this traffic mess.

I just got a new Honda mower because of them stopping sales in the U.S. at the end of the year. I hope it doesn't have this problem.
@@averagejoevideo9556 I hope they fix it and you get some value / happy mowing with it. Honda should do the right thing for their customers.

Just looking at the warranty difference between GCV (home gamer) and GX (commercial) series of Honda small engines will tell you *everything* you need to know about the GCV lineup!

I am happy to hear that you were reimbursed. What type of 82 volt electric mower did you purchase?

@@eaglescout1974 that stinks but fortunately you could return it. Lowe’s does not usually allow power equipment to be returned once their has been fuel in it. That’s not the only problem. We bought a brand new hrx217, did proper break-in, never overloaded it. Once the engine cooled and I restarted it, O found out that the compression release has broken as you stated, and it started burning oil.

This is definitely not typical of Honda quality. But, as I mentioned in the video it comes down to a part supplier issue. The tricky part is creating a repair campaign and addressing the issue at hand. Correcting the problem is not a 10 minute repair.
Just a thought…

Thanks.

@@averagejoevideo9556 Wow! Thank you so much for the kindness of a reply. I'll keep my fingers crossed that things stay as they are.

I just bought a Honda HRN 216 VKA mower from a Honda dealer in Dartmouth, NS, Canada, yesterday, July 15, 2023! Honda Canada has apparently been denying any issue, and retailers are still selling like nothing happened.
I still mow every week with a 1968 lawn boy 2 cycle and a 1974 Jacobsen with a
3.5 Briggs. the lawn boy usually starts first pull and the Jacobsen 3 pulls.
I had a similar problem with a pressure washer that had a Honda engine.

Got this mower at Home Depot in May. I had the same problem, and yes it will rip your arm off. Honda support recommended removing the spark plug and pulling the rope a few times as a fix. I am very surprised that Lowe's allowed you to return it. I am also surprised that Honda support recommended that you remove the spark plug as a fix.
It just so happens Honda has a bad batch of camshafts. worst part is putting the engine back on the deck its so easy to cross thread aluminum you need to go slow at that part it helps to do it on a bench
Thank you for the info! This is good to know. Others have stated that Honda warranty rates the job at 1-1/2 hours so that makes sense. I guess like any other repair job, if you do it enough, you become more efficient. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates.
Just took mine to the dealer today after one month of use. Same issue, but they still have them on the show room floor.
Just got my Honda mower on 5/29/23
NO ONE SINGLE ISSUES starts on the first pull!!!
So glad I was able to purchase the mower of my dreams before they pulled them from them from the shelves!!!
RIP TO THE LEGEND OF MOWING MACHINES!!!
That's awesome! Hopefully you don't have any issues. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe for updates.
That's awesome! Usually, all it takes is regular maintenance and they will run forever. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe.
I'm glad I bought my HRX a few years ago. In my 60s and I plan to make it last until I die or can no longer mow my own yard.
My local retailers already don't have any Honda mowers, might have to hunt for used.
@@marklloyd4153 that would be great if they came back!
OUTSOURCE EVERYTHING AND DON’T HAVE A VENDOR ON SITE QUALITY CHECK!!! HOORAY for Lean manufacturing!!! Faster Quicker cheaper!!!
