Live concert performance of Edita Gruberova at the Holland Festival at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam (June 24, 2007).
She is really the Queen of Bel Canto. What's very special about her, besides the artistic and tonal beauty, she possesses one of the best techniques--in that her technique will actually heal damaged vocal!
I saw Gruberova perform an opening night Lucia at Covent Garden in the late 1980s...it was out of this world. If anyone understands the feeling of the role, she does. Her cadenzas remain the standard for me. Even here, so many years later, she remains an inspiration. Brava Edita!
Most critics never heard her live. I have heard them all, Edita till 67 about was an absolute world wonder... I have never heard anybody better in means of precision, technique and perfection...

@violinistx100 Sorry, don't have a particular nominee for this generation's bel canto voice. Your candidates are def worthy. Outside bel canto I really like Netrebko and Garanca. Hey, let's just be glad that Gruberova is still singing...and singing awesome at that!

FYI dear it was sung bu inva mulla tchkaco an albanian soprano! check her on yahoo or wickipedia and ypo are roven wrong! although its not impossible to reach those notes but the aria on the song was digitalized but inva was singing it!

yes, a little, because is the same aria..
She is well-known for her "Effeckthatscherei" . (Mannerisms). Showing how good her technique is, is a cheap method to escape real interpretation of the pieces....that is why her facial expressions are funny--not to say ugly, because she tries that way to put emotion into her singing....If showing technique (which is actually the instrument) is fine arts, that is the question !

Every singer is different, please stop comparing her to Inva. Edita's voice is beautiful.

i can only listen to her, cant watch her face as i drives me potty
then now i m really confused...than what is the point of those sharp intake of breath for? when i listen to other great soprano sang this aria, they dont inhale as sharply as she did..

y ademas esta aria es para sopranos de coloratura, sarah es ligera ella puede cantar otras arias, la coloratura es una tecnica diferente a la que sarah nunca recurre, pero eso no quiere decir que sea mal cantante. yo no me imagino a la callas cantando algo de haandel y por eso es mala cantante?. no lo creo cada cual debe desarrollarse donde mejor le acomode el estilo.

It was a Dutch TV broadcast so the interviews etc. were in Dutch (and I know because I am Dutch :-)

@Endriking Inva Mula is excellent in this aria - the little of it we get to hear - but given as we don't have a recording of Inva Mula's singing the full mad scene, but only the first part plus some additions written specifically for the movie, it's really difficult to compare. Edita Gruberova is excellent. Also you are comparing a recording made for the movie with a live performance which is very different.
Much much better than Sumi Jo. Gruberova IS Lucia here!

a mi tambien me encanta sarah brightman pero en algo que no estoy de acuerdo es que dijas que su respiracion, impostacion y tecnica no tiene, es como decir que sarah no es una exelente cantante, cosa que no es verdad yo creo que si tiene una exelente tecnica, tiene una buena respiracion y imposta muy bien, afinacion , colocacion, y segun lo que es escuchado ella tiene oido absoluto y creo que de las mas perfectas, eso es lo que pienso de sarah brightman yo creo que si puede cantar esta aria =)

He leído comentarios comparando a Edita Gruberova con Inva Mula Tchako, en primera Edita Gruberova es soprano de coloratura e Inva Mula Tchako es soprano lírica, o sea ni al caso la comparación porque son registros vocales completamente diferentes, pero bueno es su opinión y se respeta.
Ahh y a mí si me gustó como la cantó Edita Gruberova. :)

decia esta aria esta fuera de su alcance, y sarah como te dire, ha estudiado opera, pero no es una cantante de opera, es de cross-over, canta arias, pero eso no la combierte en una cantante de opera.
como pavaroti, el llego a cantar baladas pop, pero eso no lo combierte en baladista vdd.
en fin, lo que digo, esta aria nececita agudos que no creo que sara los pueda dar.

es más para coloraturas, que para dramaticas, y se necesita una perfecta respiración, impostacion y tecnica, cosa que por mas que amo a sarah son cosas que no tiene, ademas de agudoas, mas que duraderos muy finos
