Thanks for the video @dereton33 . My mixer was leaking out the side rather than the out the spout. I put afew turns of PTFE plumbing tape around the O-ring of the cartridge and tightened it all back up again, to fix it. (The replacement cartridge I had didn't fit, it was 40mm diameter the same as the existing one but it was only 25mm deep whereas the old one was 43 mm deep)
So many blooming sizes.

Great tutorial. Quick tip for anyone who can’t find the same type of cartridge, it may be best to just replace the entire tap. In my case I just could not get the replacement cartridge anywhere!

Thank you Al - I had exactly this problem with a similar, but not identical, sink tap in the bathroom. With the help of your video I managed to dismantle - I cleaned the threads with wire wool (there was quite a bit of calcification that needed to be removed) I put it all back together with no problem - no more leak! Brilliant..😀

Great vids, I got a replacement cartridge tap washe assembly which cost £52. When a whole new tap was £32. This is suppose to be the age when we recycle! It was a like my washing machine, just 5 days outside the warranty the water pump failed and thw water pump with labour was £200 or so, I new Washer with 3 year warranty was £250! Madness!
Those old rubber tap washers used to last for years and only cost a few pence.
Seems we are going backwards. Broken!!! chuck it away.

I have a broken mixer.....it is also dripping but it doesn't appear to be fixable.....so I will need to replace it but I would appreciate your advice on whether I should get a deck mounted tap or a surface one.......the one I have is very similar to the one in the video but it has dual pipes beneath so I want to get the correct tap? I would be most appreciative if you could advise x
Whichever is your preference as long as you stick to well known makes, deck or surface mounted are both good, just stick to high quality.

Hi Al, As always great tutorials! I've got a Victorian set of bath taps with the shower 'telephone' style attachment. problem is the diverter handle leaks when you twist it over towards shower. I've tried to unscrew it to take the body out but it only goes so far (which is not very far) before it just sticks in position and will not go any further. I've tried pulling in various positions in case it needs to align with something but it just will not come out. I've tried to tighten it to stop the leak and as soon as you turn the lever again it leaks again.....back to square one. I take it like most ceramic tap bodies they are not serviceable. Are they not just like a normal tap body but only 1/4 turn ceramic? Have you ever (or anyone) come across this before and if so what's the solution please?
Hi Jon, they are very rarely serviceable. I never touch em, only replace them.
Hi Al....can you tell me what size cartridge I would need for my kitchen single lecer mixer tap..is it 35mm or 40 mm...thanks Al..hope you can help.
Sorry the only way to tell is to take the old cartridge out, check the size, then put it back until your new ordered one arrives.

I have the same tape but it has become very floppy and drops back down by itself after lifting it up. What can be done?
Unfortunately nothing. A new tap is best now.
HELP! I have a waterfall basin tap that isnt letting water (H or C) come out, i feel as though i may have flicked it too hard as it was stiff when turning from hot to cold and now no water runs, please help!!!! ( i tried to tighten the lever with a hex key but nothing happened.
You will need to take the cartridge out.
My tap is exactly like this one, except the actual tap is wobbling on the square base its on - cant seem to find any videos that address this problem :(
Should be an Allan key under a chrome cap.
I have water leaking out of the top of my hot tap on the 'telephone' style mixer tap on my bath and also the shaft of the tap as it rises when you turn it on (if that makes sense?) Just tap it lightly upwards with a light hammer to break the lime scale holding it there.
That cover itself won’t come off in first place for me and cut my fingers with that fine screwdriver. Don’t know what’s appropriate to take that bloody cover off.😅
Try some WD 40 and a tap upwards with a light hammer.
My shower tap was dripping from same spot, this was installed by Plumbers a few years back, watched video & discovered It doesn't have a washer. so will ned to find one. Not happy.

I've removed the grub screw but the tap wont lift off.
Give it a tap upwards with a light hammer to shock it free.
What will happen if I am not able to turn the water off and try take the tap off ?
You will get wet.
@@dereton33 will it shoot water at high pressures or just leak ? . Your video is super helpful . unfortunately I have turned the water valves off and the water is still running & I cannot access the mains as it isn’t public accessible . So I was wondering if it will be do-able even if it means getting a little wet 😂 I’m an not at all experienced if you may shed some light
How did you close the main water?
Turn off the stopcock, usually under the sink.
@@dereton33 My hot & cold feeds local to the basin had inline valves. So just a half tun on each to block water pressure without affecting the rest of the house. Sweet!
A "plumber" just changed the cartridge of my mixer , said it was fine, wanted payment and THEN I realised that it leakes even more from the top when I turn the tap on!. What to do?
He has fitted the wrong cartridge. Get him back.
@@dereton33 Thank you, it was incorrect indeed. He now installed a new cartridge and there is no more leakage.

My second least favourite tap design. Think about how often an old fashioned tap needs rewashering and how often you have to replace either mono lever mixer cartridges or even replace the ceramic cartridges on mixers that have separate hot and cold 1/4 turn handles. If you supply and fit them and something goes awry within a year, I feel honour and duty bound to repair them FOC. Rummaging through 1000's of receipts is not fun. Well, not any more. I leave it to the customer to make the purchase and warn them of the possible consequences of their choice of design. Then, if it goes wrong I charge time and labour for spares. Aint modern technology great? Been bombarded with adds for taps that filter water, deliver ice cold water and boiling water of late. Wouldn't surprise me if they invented a tap that made pancakes, forecast the weather and told me that I am beautiful. -------------------> scrap box. :-)
