    Gone through my first brew with the FastFerment and on to my second batch. Love the product! No issues with leaks and thought the set up was pretty easy following the steps (videos by FF are very helpful as well). Great product guys!

    Here are some points I noticed he didn't do in the video to make better beer:
    For better fermentation, make sure your wort is cooled to the desired temp for whatever yeast you're using (that 75 degree wort was likely warmer than desired). For dry yeast (like this video), I like to rehydrate it (although you don't need to). Those instructions are usually on the yeast packet. He was correct to aerate the wort gently after pitching the yeast, but hopefully that big spoon was completely sterile. Make sure you sanitize sanitize sanitize. Don't go sticking a thermometer in the wort you just chilled without spraying it a few times. With priming sugar, don't add it dry. You're better off mixing 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Get the water boiling and add sugar. Boil for 10 minutes, chill to around 70, and add.

      +10... everything you said is important. However, I will say having used a few of those exact beer kits, the written instructions do state very specifically NOT to rehydrate the yeast, in big bold/capital letters, even though the yeast packets do say to rehydrate. Personally, I've always had better luck rehydrating and don't think it's worth it not to.

      Sanitizer is your friend. Seriously, sanitize everything constantly once the wort drops below 180.

    Please do a beer and wine video that is not all about a kit. People want to know what ingredients and how much. They want a base of knowledge to expand upon. That said the video does go through the physical process very well.

    Oh Casey, where were you three weeks ago?! You point out something that I find crucial during this video and want to make sure that others notice. Close the valve when you add your chilled wort to the FastFerment. I did not and I'm certain now that I lost a chunk of wort and diluted my beer when topping it off, going from an expected original gravity of 1.048 to 1.040. You also point out that the ring doesn't have to go on so tight, as long as the seal is true. My own experience was I had to use a rag and pipe pliers just to budge the ring open when under pressure (lesson learned). Besides my own user-error, I have enjoyed using the FastFerment a lot. I've got 5 gallons of so-so beers conditioning now, but I can't wait for my next batch with your company's great product. Cheers.

    Putting in dry sugar from a bag? Could cause an infection of the wort. Should mix in water and sanitize with heat before putting into the wort. I use 4 oz. corn sugar in about 1 1/2 c. water, boil 15 minutes, cool to room temp, mix in.

      Bacteria doesn't grow in dry sugar so that's not a problem.

    • @mikecohen7401
      @mikecohen7401 4 роки тому

      TheHalflife123 so I can just add the sugar as in the video? Not necessary to keep to the recipe from Northern Brewer? I just want to be clear I’m not going to ruin anything. Thanks, Mike

    • @gierhedd75
      @gierhedd75 4 роки тому

      @@mikecohen7401 you should be fine. Personally I like to dissolve the sugar first so that it mixes a little easier.
      The recipe from Northern is well, one recipe. There are a million different ways to get the same results - which in my opinion, is what makes homebrewing so enjoyable. It is the subtle nuances that make your beer yours. Just be sure your equipment is sterilized, and then go nuts for donuts!

    Question: would emptying the collection bottle and then re-opening the valve to re-fill it not create a vacuum inside the fermenter forcing air in through the airlock and dumping the content of the airlock into the brew?

  • @brianmalenfant4304

    You never added the extract, you steeped grains and then you were boiling ?

    You mention the 3 techniques to prevent O2 from entering your fermenter. If you've installed a sampling port, can you just fill your collection ball with the beer from inside the fermenter?

    • @MajorDork70
      @MajorDork70 7 років тому +1

      That sounds like an excellent idea.

    • @SuperDaveno
      @SuperDaveno 7 років тому +2

      pouring out liquid will expose it to oxygen so it make your attempt futile...only way is to fill the ball with an inert gas

    • @davesolgat9789
      @davesolgat9789 4 роки тому

      You don't want the ball to have liquid in it to reinstall it because you want the trub, yeast cake to drop into it. Ideally you would purge the ball with CO2 before reinstalling it.

  • @Calendyr

    Second question: The tube you are using for botting is really wide. I use a bottling wand or an automatic bottle filler to bottle my wine, is there a way to use a smaller diameter tube to attach to the fermenter? Getting the 14 gallon one tomorrow and curious to know what the options are.

      Cold crashing. It causes the yeast to settle out of suspension (precipitate). It's a novel use of an insulation bag that I've not seen before. HTH

    Hello guys,
    I have a fermentation issue. I've filled fermentor, opened valve and added hydrated yeast. After couple of hours the yeast are at the bottom of the collection bulb and the fermentation doesn't want to start. I'm knocking at the bulb, shaking fermentor a little, closing and opening the valve and still nothing. I have an idea to close the valve and pour everything from the bulb to fermentor, wait untill fermentation is over and then open valve again. What do you think about it or what i'm doing wrong?
    Best Regards,
    Bruno.

    I strongly suggest that muslin bags should be washed thoroughly with clean water before use. Even though muslin material may claim to be made with "organic" cotton, much of today's muslin is woven in Bangladesh where the cloth is not produced to GOTS standards and will contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, azo dyes, dioxin, and heavy metals. All of these chemicals are harmful to our health, not to mention the horrid taste that formaldehyde will add to your brew.

      When u need you switch out the ball and reattach Cant you fill it up with the beer inside the fermenter with the sample valve and then reattach and wait for the yeast to drop down ? I think that should be the safest solution here. Also if they yeast is dropping maybe purging a few times would stop the problem with the yeast not getting through the valve. Small purges over time instead of having the ball open the whole time ? Ty Nice product!

    Two things I do not like about the FastFerment is the top is not big enough (I'd probably spill a lot of wort trying to pour it in) and the bottom where the valve is, is too small. Too easy to clog which is what happened on your video. The catalyst fermenter which you can buy from Northern Brewer is much better.

    • @erow80
      @erow80 7 років тому +1

      Brian M I had the same concerns (plus negative reviews regarding the FastFerment's leaky fitting issues) and am now looking at the Catalyst system. Appreciate the recommendation.

    • @matthewhornbaker7145
      @matthewhornbaker7145 5 років тому

      Star San. And don't worry about the foam; foam is good. Also, you only need 1oz to every 5 gallons of water which can be held for up to 3 to 4 months for use. I also like to add it to a spray bottle to sanitize small items that don't require a large buck of solution. You can find the product by clicking this URL: www.amazon.com/Star-San-2883-8-oz/dp/B01467UGN8 Cheers!
