It is a traditional style of house and traditionally houses were whitewashed. This was done for preservation and hygiene reasons. It was very practical.
Aesthetically, it is visually appealing since it creates a contrast that can be used to highlight architectural details (which normally will be some darker color), something that is hard to do with other colors.
So, there are reasons. Your ignorance does not make them invalid.
