The actors were actually great. After winning all the oscars for "Return of the king" they didn't attend the Oscar afterparty. They went to a fan LOTR get together and showed off the awards there. True gentlemen and lovely humans.
The actors across this franchise are all S-tier. In terms of both skill and personality. I mean, Sir Ian McKellen alone is such a gentleman. I mean, I wanna cuss to get the point across but that would be a disservice to him honestly lol.

The oldest dwarf Balin has been mentioned in The Felowship Of The Ring as the dwarf who restored the Kingdom of Moria and fellowship found his tomb. One of the youngest dwarfs Ori was the dead dwarf who held the chronicle they were reading from.
While not mentioned in the movie, the books also mention Oin, Gimli's direct uncle and the one with the ear trumpet, went with to Moria and was lost to orcs while leading an expedition
@@tycol322 From what I read, Oin was killed by the Watcher (the octopus creature). Though I guess it depends on which version is from the movie, and which version is from the book.

Balin - T.A. 2763. Dwalin - T.A. 2772. Óin - T.A. 2774. Glóin - T.A. 2783. Fíli - T.A. 2859. Kíli - T.A. 2864. The rest of the company was born sometime between T.A. 2763 and T.A. 2809. The Hobbit takes place in T.A. 2941, when Aragorn is just 10 years old.
The extended version of this movie has such sweet (Bilbo and Bofur's moment in this movie is so sweet, like if I remember correctly some sweet Bilbo scenes at the end of the movie), cool and important moments. We also see Sauron trying to take Gandalf's Ring from him, which would enlight also a lot of The Lord of The Rings stuff for the casual viewers and all. I know extended version here also adds some parts of fight scenes that are mid, especially compared to LOTR, but the lore these scenes add is also super cool in my mind. The fact that we don't see Thorin/Kili/Fili's funeral in the theatrical version is just impossible to understand (kinda the same level to The Mouth of Sauron not being on the theatrical version of ROTK and there being a weird cut instead). And you know, within the story itself, the scenes on Desolation of Smaug, of Gandalf with Thorin's father seem also super important to understand the characters' motivations and all. The Battle of the Council against Sauron is so cool lore-wise, and it was even delved deeper in the extended version, I really liked that, exploring Galadriel/Saruman and Elrond more for the casual viewers. There is also room, compared to LOTR, to make Galadriel/Elrond's faults that much more proeminent in LOTR (their hesitation in getting involved, until late Two Towers and all) and Saruman's downfall that much more bitter and tragic (because he basically WAS a good person for a long long time). It's such a shame that movie studios are so scared of creating long movies. It's especially a shame considering the Hobbit storyline already got super-extended by the fact that they made 3 movies, yet managed to cut the important scenes (the funeral) for the characters (or even, basic scenes to make us discover and LIKE the characters yknow? Especially since on LOTR we do find two of these dwarves, actually dead in some horribly sad way... why not use this saga to push this feeling of sadness harder on the audience? Ori is cute, but does any casual viewer understand that Ori is actually the poor dude they find in Moria on Fellowship of the Ring?), or the actually cool fight scenes? To me, despite its flaws, the extended version is much needed for this movie. I cannot fathom anyone editing this movie and being like "meh, the funeral scene for three of our main characters and how it affects our actual main character moving forward, including at the time of Lord of The Rings, is really optional, lets cut that out" 🤷♀ Like we gotta stick with Alfric's character or whatever his name for way too long, like oh oh haha he's dressing as a woman and not evolving at all hah ha not boring at all 🙄- but Thorin, Fili and Kili aren't given a modicum of respect, even tho their death change Bilbo forever...
finally the finale is here!! something that was never mentioned in the movies is that Thradriel wanted those gems from the mountain so badly because it was his wife's, in the extended version of the hobbit gandalf actually says to him "Those gems aren't the only thing your wife left you before she died" (insinuating legolas) and thats why Thrandiel goes and speaks to legolas about strider at the end
Actually it's not mentioned in the book either. In none of Tolkien's writings is Legolas mother mentioned, we don't know who she was or if she was alive or dead at the time of The Hobbit book or the LOtR books, this was made up by Jackson and the gems are a Jackson invention also. All we know is that Thranduil is a Sindar , originally of the realm of Doriat, that he was the son of Oropher who died in the Battle of Dagorlad, that he was the father of Legolas , that he was somehow related to Celeborn and that he was the King of Mirkwood. The gems story was inspired for the movies by the story of the great and most beloved Sindar King Thingol - King of Doriat and the father of Luthien- who was murdered by a group of dwarves that he had contracted to make him jewelry with one of the Silmarils, in their greed they killed the king but lied to their fellow dwarves saying that the king attacked them and from then on the Sindar elves hated dwarves and dwarves hated elves. This is the reason why Thranduil does not trust Thorin and his dwarves in his kingdom.

I met Sean Astin a couple of years ago here in Sweden. It was such a joy to meet him. He took his time with everyone and actually seemed genuine, not just "I'm getting paid for this". After having a great conversation with him I felt content and satisfied with the day. Before my brother and I left, I rememberd that I had a Sam action-figure still in it's box and I wondered if I could get it signed but his agents said no "Mr. Astin doesn't have any more time", to which he beckoned me to come forward and he signed it (without charging me anything for it) and had another brief chat. Later on when we left and were headed for the subway, we realized that just a couple of feet behind us, Sean was walking with one of his agents. Before splitting of, I turned around and quickly thanked him for taking his time and what a pleasure it was to meet him in person. One of the best moments in my life that I will forever cheerish.
I love The Oak's comments. I liked how he talked about when the young see old people they can't envision the adventures they have had. My very favorite uncle was a fighter pilot in the Pacific in WWII. When he was dying in hospice care I used to visit him every day. One day I said to him that I hated to leave him alone each day. He told me "I'm never alone. Each night I'm flying all those missions again with all the people I loved and served with." I knew and appreciated his adventurous spirit long before he said that but it really brought it home to me.
A favorite underlying theme to the Middle Earth stories: Gandalf can’t predict the future but he had great intuition. The great people paid no attention to Hobbits but Gandalf felt compelled long ago to befriend them for reasons he probably didn’t understand. Then young Bilbo came along with Took blood in him, and Gandalf knew he had his special hobbit. He knew he had to involve Bilbo in world events for no reason anyone else could understand. And sure enough Bilbo was a key play in retaking Erebor. But more than that, the battle-hardened adventurer Bilbo then brought up and influenced the next generation of hobbits, who were all key players in defeating Sauron, none of whom would have been who they were without Bilbo.

I was so sad that Fili and Kili had to die next to Thorin. I would have wished for a happy ending at least for Kili. However, the story also serves to shed more light on Thranduil's character and motivations, as well as his relationship with his son. We learn that he lost his wife when Legolas was a small child. The jewels for which he wants to go to war with the dwarves were the jewels of his late wife. This was also the reason why he didn't help the dwarves when Smaug attacked. Thorin's father had refused him his wife's jewels. The death of his wife has left him wary and indifferent, petrified and caught in his grief. When Tauriel accuses him of not knowing love, she has insulted him in the greatest possible way, for love is also the impetus for everything Thranduil does. Love for his dead wife, his only son and his people. That's the moment when he really shows his feelings again for the first time, the moment when he accuses Tauriel of having no idea what love really is and that her love for Kili isn't real. Later, at Kili's death scene when Tauriel asks "why does it hurt so much?" to which Thranduil replies "because it was real." then he realizes that he must turn to those close to him more. The farewell to Legolas is anything but cold. The special gesture that both of them exchange, that special hand movement, is like a non-verbal "I love you". I love the complex character of Thranduil and would have liked to have seen more scenes with Lee Pace in The Hobbit, although the few that exist are brilliant.
I truly enjoyed all your honest reactions. I know that others mentioned in the comments that this book was written for younger kids which explains the differences in the quality and the story telling. In addition, Peter Jackson also mentions in the behind the scene videos that after LOTR, he said that he would never do such a project to record 3 movies in 365 days. That is one of the reasons that he wasn’t the director of the Hobbit at the beginning. Guillermo del Toro was directing but for several reasons such as having a very different production designs he quit and the job was somewhat forced upon Peter Jackson. When Jackson took over the Hobbit films from original director Guillermo del Toro, the schedule was not adjusted. He was not granted the amount of time necessary to storyboard and redesign the world to his specifications. He was behind from day one and spent every other day sprinting to play catch-up. "I didn't know what the hell I was doing," Jackson admits. He recalls having to call for extended lunch hours just so he could figure out how to approach a scene. Compare this to the literal years of pre-production he had on The Lord of the Rings. He also mentions that he was hospitalized for severe for stomach ulcers from the pressure he was under and several times the production got delayed. He still talks about how he wanted to produce the hobbits and he tried to fix some of that in the extended version release. From everything that happened around the production of the Hobbit, he still made an amazing production. I’m glad you guys enjoyed movies.😊
This is an epic trilogy that really took me some time to appreciate, especially this last one movie. Maybe Mason Quinn won't agree, but the main reason that prevented me from fully enjoying deviations from the book is that Tolkien took an incredible amount of his own time to handwrite letters to the readers that wrote him questions about minuscule details, and he would write back pages with so many facts, rules, and a lot of reasoning behind everything. His replies are available and published, so there's a lifetime of source material to use. The most annoying changes here being two, IMO: That's a world where not even a friendship between a dwarf and an elf was really contemplated, and romance bewteen an elf and a non-elf was so rare that Toliken documented less than ten cases at all, all with humans. Tauriel behaved like less of an elf, but some romance was entertaining. And Azog was killed long before this story, but he was a great villain to have. Even Peter Jackson was not totally happy about this trilogy, since he didn't have the chance to prepare it and mold on Tolkien work the way he did with LOTR, so he basically needed to invent and twist stuff to make this children book into something dramatic enough. This being said, wonderfully well made movies and such a joy to see your reaction!
@@BaddMedicine I will definitely give a peek to the show, since my husband loves the Simarillion to the point of recalling pieces by memory at this point (while I know more about LOTR and The Hobbit) and we're curious. If you want my first impression of the trailer: I can't deny that it is painful to see Galadriel being pictured as a young lady, while she was already some thousands years old and elves stop aging at 50, according to Tolkien. She was there before the sun and the moon were crafted, and she probably was never a warrior in the sense of physical fighting. Indeed, we won't see a previous generation of elves: they were already there, already adults, at least the majority of them. And this speaks volumes on the forced inclusion of darker elves: it's not that they can magically disappear by the time of LOTR. There were just none, ever. Tolkien was so precise about the appearance, the accessories and sometimes even about the nuances of colors of his characters. Also, Tolkien imagined the story of LOTR happening 6-8000 years ago, on those lands that would after become Europe. The Rings of Power storyline would be roughly 12.000+ years ago. The overuse of CGI in the show, and the excessive stunts, can ruin the taste of an ancient myth if it becomes too otherworldly.
Just one little bit on the end; at this point of the story, Gandalf doesn't know that Bilbo has the One ring. He suspects it's a "magic" ring as he says, but he comes to realize what it really is during the events of the Fellowship. And you may also have picked it already, but during Galadriel's fight you clearly see her wearing a ring; that's one of the 3 rings of power given to the elves. Elrond has the second one, and Gandalf has the 3rd one.
@@janezkette3901 I think it did, I’m not a specialist. But I think the best way to look at it is that the Balrog wasn’t “True fire.” It was a corrupted and malicious form of it, while Gandalfs held a ring of the “True fire”. That’s how I look at it.
@@janezkette3901 Thats how Gandalf said when he fought the Balrog: he is the servant of Secret Fire which means Eru Iluvatar, the holder of Flame Imperishable. That should scare off the Balrog who once was the servant of Eru. Gandalf also the weilder of the Flame of Anor or the ring of Narya.
Tauriel is added simply to make Kili's death more emotional. In the book, which is for children, Fili and Kili don't have a major role, like most of the company, and get killed "offscreen", as it were.
I don't want to be too spoilery about the book, but I will say that I have big respect for the movie team for their adaptation of the battle and the dwarf deaths. The book is from Bilbo's POV and his involvement in the battle and therefore the description of the battle and how the dwarves die is virtually non existent. The majority of the dwarves never have their personality explored. For these movies, we had to care about the individual characters, have them die in meaningful personal ways and have the story come together and make sense, giving enough weight and realistic involvement to all the characters along the way that were also given added story and personality such as Bard. I'm not a big fan of the Tauriel/Kili stuff, nor Alfrid being so prominent he's a bit stupid for me, but i can see the good intentions behind everything, comedy value and bringing in more female characters ( i heard rumours they were somewhat forced into making her a love interest even though they didn't really want that) and that general feeling of the Peter Jackson's middle earth hug more than made up for any issues i had.
THANK YOU! This seems to be something nobody ever gives this trilogy credit for: In the books the dwarves have next to no personality. Gandalf and Bilbo get plenty, but the most we get from the dwarves is that Thorin is the no-nonsense leader, Fili and Kili are the foolhardy young ones and Bombur is the fat one. But this film actually gives them distinct personalities, even if a lot of them are basically just gimmicks. But yeah, I know audiences would be pissed if they portrayed the battle as it was in the book: Bilbo gets knocked out early on and when he comes to the battle is over, and he's just informed how the battle went and who died. Did they overdo the comic-relief moments? Yes. Did they overuse CGI and digital backlots where on-location shooting and prosthetics and costumes were an option? Oh hell yes! Did the final battle drag on for too long? Even as someone who loves movie battlescenes, I think it was a bit dragged on. But I will never hate these films as much as so many other people seem to.

By the way, the mithril Thorin gave bilbo is priceless and worth more than gold. He knew this and gave it to bilbo anyway as a token of their friendship
The only real grudge I have against this film is that they made alfreds part too big... they should have focused more on the dwarves and their relations between one another than make a secondary villain-like grima wormtung / gollum like character.
@James Paganini I liked him too I just wonder if he was killed when he was catapulted. When they were going into production and they were talking about the augmentation of a love story my replies were as long as they didn’t change what happened to Kili and Fili and Thorin in the end.
Or alternatively use the character of Master of Lake-town (who in book survived the Smaug's attack and lived to sow a bit of intrigue and shift the blame as real politician does :). That would naturally lead to him getting his just comeuppance: "The old Master had come to a bad end. Bard had given him much gold for the help of the Lake-people, but being of the kind that easily catches such disease he fell under the dragon-sickness, and took most of the gold and fled with it, and died of starvation in the Waste, deserted by his companions. 'The new Master is of wiser kind,' said Balin, 'and very popular, for, of course, he gets most of the credit for the present prosperity. They are making songs which say that in his day the rivers run with gold.' 'Then the prophecies of the old songs have turned out to be true, after a fashion!' said Bilbo." The Hobbit, Ch 19, The Last Stage Master of Lake-town would make more sense than this invented Alfrid who wasn't even funny, and more cringe character.
The reaction in the cinema here in Britain to hearing Billy Connolly's voice just before they shows him was definitely a highlight of the experience for me 🤣
The way I look at the love triangle in this is interesting because I view Legolas as in love with Tauriel, but not overly jealous of the fact that she loves a dwarf. Based off Tolkien's mythology, Elves can die of broken hearts, so when Kili dies, she follows soon after the movie ends, thus the reason, in-universe, she isn't around for _The Lord of the Rings Trilogy._ Legolas sees how much Tauriel loved Kili, and uses their relationship as an example when he is making friends with Gimli. Even at the beginning of _The Lord of the Rings Trilogy,_ he is kinder and softer towards dwarves in general than he is in _The Hobbit Trilogy._
@@elizabethgreen6210 Of course she wasn't in the books. Peter Jackson stated she was based of a minor character who had no lines and wasn't given a sex. I was referencing the mythology of the books that even though the movies never state or show could still happen because we never see or hear of it happening in any of the said six movies.
I never actually saw it as a love triangle. It takes 3 to have feelings. What we see from Legolas is not love in the romantic way I feel. He loves her as a sister, his sidekick, confidant. He sees no difference between him & her just because he is highborn. I feel he proves this when his father breaks the promise to the orc of setting him free. For Legolas, a promise is a promise, no matter what race or level in the hierarchy you are. Thus when he talks about what he feels in his heart is that he sees her as his friend, as someone on the same level as him no matter how his father sees it, not in particular his "romantic" love for her. She yes has feelings for both, but that dont make a triangle, just a girl that caught feeling for 2 guys. 🙂
I like your take! Thranduil says Legolas is “fond” of her, but we don’t actually see Legolas being romantic. His loyalty in assisting her reads perfectly fine as a loyalty to a sister in arms and doing what’s right. Plus I think he’s at least a couple thousand years old by this point so he’d be mature enough to not push if he started to feel more but saw her interests lie elsewhere.
Benedict cumberbatch killed it as the voice of smaug.( his father used to read the book for him as a kid and Benedict says he just does the same voice his father did)
At the end, when Thranduil tells Legolas to go North, and find Aragorn. I believe Peter Jackson is hinting that a, War in the North movie may be made in the coming future. Jackson was given permission to make a movie about the war. And he can make it how he wants. Because there isn’t much known about the War in the North.
I really loved this trilogy, and that's why I finally watched The Lord of the Rings, because it never caught my attention... So, I bought the extended versions of both trilogies and they're all amazing, even the special features are great to watch: how they designed, built and brought everything to life, why they added stories or cut some parts of others... In all vacation periods that I can't go out and I have to stay home, I always watch them again... and of course, also all the Harry Potter movies are a good choice.
For the Smaug part of my dissertation last year, I not only analysed book and film Smaug, I also analysed the similarities between Smaug and Thorin, when the latter starts developing the Dragon Sickness, and the way he starts speaking like Smaug, the whole "I will not part with a ssssssingle coin" etc, I rewatched that scene several times but it was so fun! Haha
SUCH a lovely comment from Oak about his experience at Fan Expo. I've only met Billy Boyd in person at a convention (which was wonderful) of the 4 but they all seem like such lovely guys! It's awesome that you watched The Friendship Onion podcast those two especially are SO funny. Oak if you ever get chance to find the extended DVDs with the Cast Commentary feature, I highly recommend it. Billy and Dom are the highlight they're so funny but it's all brilliant and really interesting stuff. I was so obsessed with anything any of the LOTR cast did as a young teen I even started watching LOST because of Dom Monaghan and that was a whole amazing journey in itself. Really sweet that you took the time to say that! They've been posting lots of fun pictures of them all together on instagram too. It shows what a special experience filming LOTR was that the cast are still all such good friends!
As far as how I’d rate this trilogy, I rate them as high as the first three, 10/10. They are different in their own way, made me laugh, cry and get completely immersed in this world, so they did their job for me.
Yes, definitely!!!! Overall, this story is amazing and these films were well done. All with the main message to value your home and know that you cannot get through life by yourself
I've always felt for Thorin. He lost everything when Smaug came to Erebor, and during the battle of Moria (where he lost his grandfather, father and brother). His life in Blue Mountains was a hard one. The only thing he wanted was to take back his ancestral home, and provide for his people. In the end, like his grandfather before him, Thorin succumbed to gold sickness that plagued his line (one can draw a pararell with a mental illness here), he had to watch his nephews die before his eyes, and finally, lost his own life. What an awful fate... To this day, Botfa is hard to watch for me. But I enjoyed seeing more of the dwarves in this movie, especially Dain Ironfoot. The battle itself was epic. Despite what some people say, I will always have lots of love for the Hobbit trilogy. I adore young Bilbo, and I adore the dwarves. Plus, the stuff with Galadriel and Sauron was badass.
The dwarves deaths always make me cry. ALWAYS! I cried during this reaction as well. And the elves jumping over the dwarves at the beginning of the battle will also always be epic
These movies are so fun. The shot of Gandalf and Bilbo just sitting together after everything is just masterful silent acting. When I saw this in the theater, obviously it has been a couple of years, and people theorised "what if it goes back to old Bilbo and we end with Gandalf coming to the door at the start of Fellowship" and I was like omg they do that I'm not gonna be able to handle it and when they did it i audibly gasped and started crying immediately 🤣🤣 I'm even welling up now just thinking about it hahahah. As a fan of LOTR for 10 years, for them to do that full circle was just..beautiful.
I met Sylvester McCoy (Radagast) at a con once. Very sweet man, he signed my copy of the Hobbit and said I had a lovely name. I was baffled that the line to meet him was so short.
So glad I found this channel back in the day. This (and other series like Harry Potter) have been such a blast, and a wild ride. Something awesome about seeing someone excited to bring their friends into something new, and seeing those friends love it just as much. Can’t wait to see what you all get into next 🙂
So, fun little backstory bit about the Ring, the Rings, and the rings. When Sauron was beginning to make the Rings (the 3, 7, & 9) he wanted to make sure everything would go correctly first. So, he made a boat load of 'test' rings. Each and every one of these rings were simple bands of plain gold. Most of them could turn you invisible. There were other effects some had, but, it isn't delved into much what they were. The reasons Gandalf never suspects that ring Bilbo has is the One Ring is for that reason. He thought it was one of the 'test' rings as Bilbo had never shown any sign of corruption while he had 'the ring.' It was only after Bilbo freaks out on Gandalf about giving up the Ring that Gandalf realized what a fool he'd been for nearly a century and rode to Gondor to research. There are theories that he made the One Ring a simple band of gold so that it would more easily be mistaken of one of the 'magic rings' and be used by the one who found it.
I love a lot about these movies, but their tone is all wrong (and there shouldn't have been a love triangle.) The book had a feel to it, like a father telling stories to his kids. Because thats exactly what it was. The Hobbit was originally bedtime stories that Tolkien would tell to his children, and he only started writing them down because the kids kept finding inconsistencies.
Something that I thought about on my last re-watch of these movies: oaths and promises are cosmically binding in Middle-Earth, and breaking them has dire consequences. It's why Boromir and Gollum died when they betrayed Frodo. So although I don't believe it was Tolkien's intention when he wrote the hook, I do think it can be interpreted that when Thorin broke his promise to share the wealth of Erebor with the people of Laketown, he sealed his own doom. Personally, I love this trilogy. It's different from Lord of the Rings, but it still has plenty of its own worth. And even though the extended editions don't add as much runtime as they did for the Lord of the Rings movies, there's still some great additions that flesh the world out even more, especially in regards to the Necromancer/Sauron.
The Hobbit was written for children. The Lord of The Rings was written for adults. I think that largely accounts for why The Lord of The Rings is more epic; it comes from the books. (If you wonder why there was a love story in a book for kids, there wasn't. There were no female characters in the book, The Hobbit.)
The best explanation I've heard for the eagles is imagine one of your kids asking you to give them a piggyback ride all the way to your local mall 20 miles or more away and you have to walk the whole way carrying them on your back.

Oh, it would be so cool to watch their reactions, they should see at least first three movies. The world building is rather unique and the dark parts actually remind me a little of HP atmosphere.
No RoP for me. They've gone out of their way to change everything, and have been toxic towards the fandom in doing it. It was made by people with no respect for Tolkien, and feel it needed to be changed. This probably won't be seen anyway since it seems I'm ghosted on YT, that's what happens when you have certain opinions here. But someone just respond with a "yo" if this is actually visible.

Tauriel isn’t in the books so the love triangle didn’t exist which is why it seems very off. When I first watched these movies it didn’t bother me much because I haven’t read the books but as time has passed, it does irk me because it interferes with the characters personalities.
It was studio interference, and Philippa Boyens, that gave us Tauriel. Evangeline Lily (Tauriel) was pissed that they breached her contract with such a bait-and-switch

Like Mason said, Gandalf doesn't think Bilbo has the One Ring. He only thinks it is a random magic ring, which explains why he rides to Gondor in the first LOTR in order to verify if it is the One Ring 60 years later after he hears that Gollum was tortured and revealed Bilbo stole the One Ring from him. Otherwise, he would have tried to destroy it right away. *It is not the last time Badd Medecine is in Middle Earth btw, a series and a movie are coming out in the next years!
The reason the gold has such a hold is that a Dragon tends to infect it hoard with a "Greed Disease", over and above the effect gold has already. (Which is why the treasure is referred to as "Cursed" by some of the others. You saw how just the treasure affected Thror, Thorin's Grandfather, so it's hold over Thorin was much stronger, as it had been thoroughly infected sitting under Smaug for 60 odd years. It says much about Thorin's character that he eventually overcame it, basically breaking the curse.

Edit: also you're correct but also not at the same time . They're putting in some new stuff in but they're also binding that into events that have happened ( to make it much bigger ) Do y'all remember the huge battle in the prologue of Fellowship of the ring with Sauron in physical form , young Elrond, isildur, and his Father Elendil ( Aragorns ancestors) that whole event with him failing on throwing the one Ring back into Mount doom ? That entire part of the Second Age is what you're gonna see . Some other stuff in the Second Age too. Thing is why it's so different with this is cause this doesn't really have a beginning Middle end sort of thing. It's not from 1 book itself or group kind of like how the Hobbit or LOTR are. It's from appendices, extra texts from jrr Tolkien ( mostly in the extra categories in the back of the books and also the main book that has most of those texts together, Silmarillion. ) It's practically like Bible text lol But altogether, they've confirmed, combined in one series of 5 season's ( supposedly almost 50 hours long they're going for ) we should be seeing the Rise and Downfall of Numenor ( Aragorns ancestors original island kingdom) the making of the Rings of power ( 3 for Elf lords , 7 for dwarf Lords and 9 for kings of Men, and the one that Sauron secretly made 😁) War of elves and Sauron and eventually the rise and downfall ( ish ) of Sauron in the War of the Last Alliance ( all that happened in the prologue of LOTR fellowship of the ring) There's some great things to be excited about . One of the cool things about this show that is practically confirmed is we might be seeing flashbacks of the First Age . Way way before then . When Sauron was just a lieutenant for the OG Dark lord Morgoth. That whole Age is Crazy lol . I'm hyped and we're so damn close to it lol been following it ever since it was a rumor like back in 2017 or something and now we're hear. Some clips looked awesome. I just can't wait to inject more Middle Earth in my veins lol To see Moria in it's prime along with some places like Numenor, Rivendell when It was built ( I'm Assuming. Along with Mordor) Eregion, Lindon, many awesome places you'll see in here. I hope it's great

Awesome experience, Oak, nothing like it. Those are always amazing, though I've never had doubts that meeting any of those actors would be a positive experience. Whoever edits these (I think Diamond Dave does if I'm not mistaken) is great and doesn't get nearly enough credit.
I dug the HP patronus, wand and sorting vids but this was the one I was really anticipating. Bring it on! Billy Connolly was perfectly cast. He would have truly thrived in an R-rated version.

Guys, i have to say watch this one of the trilogy again but the extended Version. Trust me, out of All the movies, this one is criminally cut down, especially when the battle between elves and dwarves Start. I was in shock how many essential parts they cut out from the Fight between the orcs as well. It is a shame because it makes Thorins redemption so much more impactful. Yeah, it's weird how the extended version doesn't add anything to Alfrid's storyline and all 🙃 they literally cut none of this dude's scenes and yet, cut so many about Thorin, the dwarves, Gandalf's journey with Sauron and all. Impossible to comprehend...
I enjoy these films and find them decent, but overall I don't think they compare to LOTR. It was saddening to see this series be so divisive, and have no Oscar success like LOTR.
I thought Tauriel and Kili was a little....unrealistic. they had like a brief conversation. But otherwise so much action and I loved the new characters.
Making Thorin's funeral a deleted scene was 'the Darkening of Númenor' level offence! There were many things that could've been done better in the Hobbit trilogy, but cutting out Thorin's funeral is an outrage!
The eagles are agents of Iluvatar, the creator god. They are only to called upon in times of urgent dire need when no other solution is available, and only as long as the immediate dire conditions exist.
Y'all should check out the 1977 Hobbit animated movie by Rankin/Bass! It's got more songs from the book, a slightly whimsical art style, and at 78 minutes is a much more concise adaptation of Bilbo's story than the film trilogy is.
I grew up watching the LOR movies and the hobbit came out when I was in college so I wasn’t able to see it. When pt2 came out my roommates bought us tickets and we watched pt1 before going to the theaters. To say I was pumped and jolted to the car lol
The look through the eyebrow thing is called the "Kubrick Stare". It was made famous by Stanley Kubrick and is his most recognized character device. Look at Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange, Jack Nicholson in the Shining, the character of Private Pile in Full Metal Jacket. Malcolm McDowell perfected it.
To me it's a solid trilogy, as someone who not just read the books but also went through the appendix because I was completely obsessed with knowing minuscule details I love how the writers went there to get more info to give more to the story. It's funny how originally they just wanted to make one film, I think it would've have been ok but this is so much better.
Some people say you could have watched the extended edition... it's less significant than LOTR trilogy, because "most" of scenes are just prolonged action fights, but they also put more emphasis and hinting the role of the other Rings of power. Actually the very same curse/sickness of the dwarves came right from the corruption of the Seven Dwarven Rings: they are too resiliant to become Ringwraiths (the Nine) but brought ruin and flame an all their possessors.

I love all of them and also I think Thorin could have easily moved the pale orcs blade over to the left more and then let the orc stab him still but because he moved it over to the left more it avoided his chest and heart but went through his arm and most likely cut his arm off but he would still be able to stab the orc with his sword and kill him but that's just my opinion on what I think he could have done
Gandalf didn't know the magic ring was the one ring. As he said "There are many magic rings and none are to used lightly." He assumed it was a lesser ring of power. It's why he had to leave in LOTR to find out if it was the one ring.

The actors were actually great. After winning all the oscars for "Return of the king" they didn't attend the Oscar afterparty. They went to a fan LOTR get together and showed off the awards there. True gentlemen and lovely humans.

The actors across this franchise are all S-tier. In terms of both skill and personality. I mean, Sir Ian McKellen alone is such a gentleman. I mean, I wanna cuss to get the point across but that would be a disservice to him honestly lol.

The oldest dwarf Balin has been mentioned in The Felowship Of The Ring as the dwarf who restored the Kingdom of Moria and fellowship found his tomb. One of the youngest dwarfs Ori was the dead dwarf who held the chronicle they were reading from.
While not mentioned in the movie, the books also mention Oin, Gimli's direct uncle and the one with the ear trumpet, went with to Moria and was lost to orcs while leading an expedition

In the book Thorin is the oldest. He's got Balin by 17 years. And in the book Kili is the youngest, not Ori.

Idk why they cut that out. I have the extended editions and the fact that they cut that out, as well as Thorins funeral, never sat right with me.
The extended version of this movie has such sweet (Bilbo and Bofur's moment in this movie is so sweet, like if I remember correctly some sweet Bilbo scenes at the end of the movie), cool and important moments. We also see Sauron trying to take Gandalf's Ring from him, which would enlight also a lot of The Lord of The Rings stuff for the casual viewers and all. I know extended version here also adds some parts of fight scenes that are mid, especially compared to LOTR, but the lore these scenes add is also super cool in my mind. The fact that we don't see Thorin/Kili/Fili's funeral in the theatrical version is just impossible to understand (kinda the same level to The Mouth of Sauron not being on the theatrical version of ROTK and there being a weird cut instead). And you know, within the story itself, the scenes on Desolation of Smaug, of Gandalf with Thorin's father seem also super important to understand the characters' motivations and all. The Battle of the Council against Sauron is so cool lore-wise, and it was even delved deeper in the extended version, I really liked that, exploring Galadriel/Saruman and Elrond more for the casual viewers. There is also room, compared to LOTR, to make Galadriel/Elrond's faults that much more proeminent in LOTR (their hesitation in getting involved, until late Two Towers and all) and Saruman's downfall that much more bitter and tragic (because he basically WAS a good person for a long long time). It's such a shame that movie studios are so scared of creating long movies. It's especially a shame considering the Hobbit storyline already got super-extended by the fact that they made 3 movies, yet managed to cut the important scenes (the funeral) for the characters (or even, basic scenes to make us discover and LIKE the characters yknow? Especially since on LOTR we do find two of these dwarves, actually dead in some horribly sad way... why not use this saga to push this feeling of sadness harder on the audience? Ori is cute, but does any casual viewer understand that Ori is actually the poor dude they find in Moria on Fellowship of the Ring?), or the actually cool fight scenes? To me, despite its flaws, the extended version is much needed for this movie. I cannot fathom anyone editing this movie and being like "meh, the funeral scene for three of our main characters and how it affects our actual main character moving forward, including at the time of Lord of The Rings, is really optional, lets cut that out" 🤷♀ Like we gotta stick with Alfric's character or whatever his name for way too long, like oh oh haha he's dressing as a woman and not evolving at all hah ha not boring at all 🙄- but Thorin, Fili and Kili aren't given a modicum of respect, even tho their death change Bilbo forever...

something that was never mentioned in the movies is that Thradriel wanted those gems from the mountain so badly because it was his wife's, in the extended version of the hobbit gandalf actually says to him "Those gems aren't the only thing your wife left you before she died" (insinuating legolas) and thats why Thrandiel goes and speaks to legolas about strider at the end

Actually it's not mentioned in the book either.
In none of Tolkien's writings is Legolas mother mentioned, we don't know who she was or if she was alive or dead at the time of The Hobbit book or the LOtR books, this was made up by Jackson and the gems are a Jackson invention also.
All we know is that Thranduil is a Sindar , originally of the realm of Doriat, that he was the son of Oropher who died in the Battle of Dagorlad, that he was the father of Legolas , that he was somehow related to Celeborn and that he was the King of Mirkwood.
The gems story was inspired for the movies by the story of the great and most beloved Sindar King Thingol - King of Doriat and the father of Luthien- who was murdered by a group of dwarves that he had contracted to make him jewelry with one of the Silmarils, in their greed they killed the king but lied to their fellow dwarves saying that the king attacked them and from then on the Sindar elves hated dwarves and dwarves hated elves. This is the reason why Thranduil does not trust Thorin and his dwarves in his kingdom.

I met Sean Astin a couple of years ago here in Sweden. It was such a joy to meet him. He took his time with everyone and actually seemed genuine, not just "I'm getting paid for this".
After having a great conversation with him I felt content and satisfied with the day.
Before my brother and I left, I rememberd that I had a Sam action-figure still in it's box and I wondered if I could get it signed but his agents said no "Mr. Astin doesn't have any more time", to which he beckoned me to come forward and he signed it (without charging me anything for it) and had another brief chat.
Later on when we left and were headed for the subway, we realized that just a couple of feet behind us, Sean was walking with one of his agents. Before splitting of, I turned around and quickly thanked him for taking his time and what a pleasure it was to meet him in person.
One of the best moments in my life that I will forever cheerish.

I love The Oak's comments. I liked how he talked about when the young see old people they can't envision the adventures they have had. My very favorite uncle was a fighter pilot in the Pacific in WWII. When he was dying in hospice care I used to visit him every day. One day I said to him that I hated to leave him alone each day. He told me "I'm never alone. Each night I'm flying all those missions again with all the people I loved and served with." I knew and appreciated his adventurous spirit long before he said that but it really brought it home to me.

A favorite underlying theme to the Middle Earth stories: Gandalf can’t predict the future but he had great intuition. The great people paid no attention to Hobbits but Gandalf felt compelled long ago to befriend them for reasons he probably didn’t understand. Then young Bilbo came along with Took blood in him, and Gandalf knew he had his special hobbit. He knew he had to involve Bilbo in world events for no reason anyone else could understand. And sure enough Bilbo was a key play in retaking Erebor. But more than that, the battle-hardened adventurer Bilbo then brought up and influenced the next generation of hobbits, who were all key players in defeating Sauron, none of whom would have been who they were without Bilbo.

I was so sad that Fili and Kili had to die next to Thorin. I would have wished for a happy ending at least for Kili. However, the story also serves to shed more light on Thranduil's character and motivations, as well as his relationship with his son. We learn that he lost his wife when Legolas was a small child. The jewels for which he wants to go to war with the dwarves were the jewels of his late wife. This was also the reason why he didn't help the dwarves when Smaug attacked. Thorin's father had refused him his wife's jewels. The death of his wife has left him wary and indifferent, petrified and caught in his grief. When Tauriel accuses him of not knowing love, she has insulted him in the greatest possible way, for love is also the impetus for everything Thranduil does. Love for his dead wife, his only son and his people. That's the moment when he really shows his feelings again for the first time, the moment when he accuses Tauriel of having no idea what love really is and that her love for Kili isn't real. Later, at Kili's death scene when Tauriel asks "why does it hurt so much?" to which Thranduil replies "because it was real." then he realizes that he must turn to those close to him more. The farewell to Legolas is anything but cold. The special gesture that both of them exchange, that special hand movement, is like a non-verbal "I love you". I love the complex character of Thranduil and would have liked to have seen more scenes with Lee Pace in The Hobbit, although the few that exist are brilliant.
I truly enjoyed all your honest reactions. I know that others mentioned in the comments that this book was written for younger kids which explains the differences in the quality and the story telling. In addition, Peter Jackson also mentions in the behind the scene videos that after LOTR, he said that he would never do such a project to record 3 movies in 365 days. That is one of the reasons that he wasn’t the director of the Hobbit at the beginning. Guillermo del Toro was directing but for several reasons such as having a very different production designs he quit and the job was somewhat forced upon Peter Jackson. When Jackson took over the Hobbit films from original director Guillermo del Toro, the schedule was not adjusted. He was not granted the amount of time necessary to storyboard and redesign the world to his specifications. He was behind from day one and spent every other day sprinting to play catch-up. "I didn't know what the hell I was doing," Jackson admits. He recalls having to call for extended lunch hours just so he could figure out how to approach a scene. Compare this to the literal years of pre-production he had on The Lord of the Rings. He also mentions that he was hospitalized for severe for stomach ulcers from the pressure he was under and several times the production got delayed. He still talks about how he wanted to produce the hobbits and he tried to fix some of that in the extended version release. From everything that happened around the production of the Hobbit, he still made an amazing production. I’m glad you guys enjoyed movies.😊

This is an epic trilogy that really took me some time to appreciate, especially this last one movie.
Maybe Mason Quinn won't agree, but the main reason that prevented me from fully enjoying deviations from the book is that Tolkien took an incredible amount of his own time to handwrite letters to the readers that wrote him questions about minuscule details, and he would write back pages with so many facts, rules, and a lot of reasoning behind everything. His replies are available and published, so there's a lifetime of source material to use.
The most annoying changes here being two, IMO:
That's a world where not even a friendship between a dwarf and an elf was really contemplated, and romance bewteen an elf and a non-elf was so rare that Toliken documented less than ten cases at all, all with humans. Tauriel behaved like less of an elf, but some romance was entertaining.
And Azog was killed long before this story, but he was a great villain to have.
Even Peter Jackson was not totally happy about this trilogy, since he didn't have the chance to prepare it and mold on Tolkien work the way he did with LOTR, so he basically needed to invent and twist stuff to make this children book into something dramatic enough.
This being said, wonderfully well made movies and such a joy to see your reaction!

If you want my first impression of the trailer:
I can't deny that it is painful to see Galadriel being pictured as a young lady, while she was already some thousands years old and elves stop aging at 50, according to Tolkien. She was there before the sun and the moon were crafted, and she probably was never a warrior in the sense of physical fighting.
Indeed, we won't see a previous generation of elves: they were already there, already adults, at least the majority of them.
And this speaks volumes on the forced inclusion of darker elves: it's not that they can magically disappear by the time of LOTR. There were just none, ever. Tolkien was so precise about the appearance, the accessories and sometimes even about the nuances of colors of his characters.
Also, Tolkien imagined the story of LOTR happening 6-8000 years ago, on those lands that would after become Europe. The Rings of Power storyline would be roughly 12.000+ years ago.
The overuse of CGI in the show, and the excessive stunts, can ruin the taste of an ancient myth if it becomes too otherworldly.
Just one little bit on the end; at this point of the story, Gandalf doesn't know that Bilbo has the One ring. He suspects it's a "magic" ring as he says, but he comes to realize what it really is during the events of the Fellowship.
And you may also have picked it already, but during Galadriel's fight you clearly see her wearing a ring; that's one of the 3 rings of power given to the elves. Elrond has the second one, and Gandalf has the 3rd one.
I always wondered if Narya (ring of fire - Gandalf's ring of power) helped him in his fight against Balrog
@@janezkette3901 I think it did, I’m not a specialist. But I think the best way to look at it is that the Balrog wasn’t “True fire.” It was a corrupted and malicious form of it, while Gandalfs held a ring of the “True fire”. That’s how I look at it.
@@janezkette3901 Thats how Gandalf said when he fought the Balrog: he is the servant of Secret Fire which means Eru Iluvatar, the holder of Flame Imperishable. That should scare off the Balrog who once was the servant of Eru. Gandalf also the weilder of the Flame of Anor or the ring of Narya.

Tauriel is added simply to make Kili's death more emotional. In the book, which is for children, Fili and Kili don't have a major role, like most of the company, and get killed "offscreen", as it were.

Watching Dwalin, whom is presented as the most gruff and physically imposing, crushed during his conversation with Thorin is a great scene.
I don't want to be too spoilery about the book, but I will say that I have big respect for the movie team for their adaptation of the battle and the dwarf deaths. The book is from Bilbo's POV and his involvement in the battle and therefore the description of the battle and how the dwarves die is virtually non existent. The majority of the dwarves never have their personality explored. For these movies, we had to care about the individual characters, have them die in meaningful personal ways and have the story come together and make sense, giving enough weight and realistic involvement to all the characters along the way that were also given added story and personality such as Bard. I'm not a big fan of the Tauriel/Kili stuff, nor Alfrid being so prominent he's a bit stupid for me, but i can see the good intentions behind everything, comedy value and bringing in more female characters ( i heard rumours they were somewhat forced into making her a love interest even though they didn't really want that) and that general feeling of the Peter Jackson's middle earth hug more than made up for any issues i had.

THANK YOU! This seems to be something nobody ever gives this trilogy credit for: In the books the dwarves have next to no personality. Gandalf and Bilbo get plenty, but the most we get from the dwarves is that Thorin is the no-nonsense leader, Fili and Kili are the foolhardy young ones and Bombur is the fat one. But this film actually gives them distinct personalities, even if a lot of them are basically just gimmicks. But yeah, I know audiences would be pissed if they portrayed the battle as it was in the book: Bilbo gets knocked out early on and when he comes to the battle is over, and he's just informed how the battle went and who died. Did they overdo the comic-relief moments? Yes. Did they overuse CGI and digital backlots where on-location shooting and prosthetics and costumes were an option? Oh hell yes! Did the final battle drag on for too long? Even as someone who loves movie battlescenes, I think it was a bit dragged on. But I will never hate these films as much as so many other people seem to.

The only real grudge I have against this film is that they made alfreds part too big... they should have focused more on the dwarves and their relations between one another than make a secondary villain-like grima wormtung / gollum like character.
The extended version is like a Wylie Coyote and Road Runner Cartoon.

Or alternatively use the character of Master of Lake-town (who in book survived the Smaug's attack and lived to sow a bit of intrigue and shift the blame as real politician does :).

As you see, the Master had not got his position for nothing. Wild and bitter words were shouted from many sides; and some of those who had before sung the old songs loudest, were now heard as loudly crying that the dwarves had stirred the dragon up against them deliberately!
"Fools!" said Bard. "Why waste words and wrath on those unhappy creatures? Doubtless they perished first in fire, before Smaug came to us." Then even as he was speaking, the thought came into his heart of the fabled treasure of the Mountain lying without guard or owner, and he fell suddenly silent. He thought of the Master's words, and of Dale rebuilt, and filled with golden bells, if he could but find the men."

That would naturally lead to him getting his just comeuppance:
"The old Master had come to a bad end. Bard had given him much gold for the help of the Lake-people, but being of the kind that easily catches such disease he fell under the dragon-sickness, and took most of the gold and fled with it, and died of starvation in the Waste, deserted by his companions.
'The new Master is of wiser kind,' said Balin, 'and very popular, for, of course, he gets most of the credit for the present prosperity. They are making songs which say that in his day the rivers run with gold.'
'Then the prophecies of the old songs have turned out to be true, after a fashion!' said Bilbo."

The way I look at the love triangle in this is interesting because I view Legolas as in love with Tauriel, but not overly jealous of the fact that she loves a dwarf. Based off Tolkien's mythology, Elves can die of broken hearts, so when Kili dies, she follows soon after the movie ends, thus the reason, in-universe, she isn't around for _The Lord of the Rings Trilogy._ Legolas sees how much Tauriel loved Kili, and uses their relationship as an example when he is making friends with Gimli. Even at the beginning of _The Lord of the Rings Trilogy,_ he is kinder and softer towards dwarves in general than he is in _The Hobbit Trilogy._
But Tauriel was never in The Hobbit (the books) but if she was I agree she would die soon after Kili.

I was referencing the mythology of the books that even though the movies never state or show could still happen because we never see or hear of it happening in any of the said six movies.
I never actually saw it as a love triangle. It takes 3 to have feelings. What we see from Legolas is not love in the romantic way I feel. He loves her as a sister, his sidekick, confidant. He sees no difference between him & her just because he is highborn. I feel he proves this when his father breaks the promise to the orc of setting him free. For Legolas, a promise is a promise, no matter what race or level in the hierarchy you are. Thus when he talks about what he feels in his heart is that he sees her as his friend, as someone on the same level as him no matter how his father sees it, not in particular his "romantic" love for her. She yes has feelings for both, but that dont make a triangle, just a girl that caught feeling for 2 guys. 🙂
I like your take! Thranduil says Legolas is “fond” of her, but we don’t actually see Legolas being romantic. His loyalty in assisting her reads perfectly fine as a loyalty to a sister in arms and doing what’s right. Plus I think he’s at least a couple thousand years old by this point so he’d be mature enough to not push if he started to feel more but saw her interests lie elsewhere.
The Elves jumping over the Dwarves to join in battle is just epic as heck.

At the end, when Thranduil tells Legolas to go North, and find Aragorn. I believe Peter Jackson is hinting that a, War in the North movie may be made in the coming future. Jackson was given permission to make a movie about the war. And he can make it how he wants. Because there isn’t much known about the War in the North.
I really loved this trilogy, and that's why I finally watched The Lord of the Rings, because it never caught my attention... So, I bought the extended versions of both trilogies and they're all amazing, even the special features are great to watch: how they designed, built and brought everything to life, why they added stories or cut some parts of others... In all vacation periods that I can't go out and I have to stay home, I always watch them again... and of course, also all the Harry Potter movies are a good choice.
For the Smaug part of my dissertation last year, I not only analysed book and film Smaug, I also analysed the similarities between Smaug and Thorin, when the latter starts developing the Dragon Sickness, and the way he starts speaking like Smaug, the whole "I will not part with a ssssssingle coin" etc, I rewatched that scene several times but it was so fun! Haha

SUCH a lovely comment from Oak about his experience at Fan Expo. I've only met Billy Boyd in person at a convention (which was wonderful) of the 4 but they all seem like such lovely guys! It's awesome that you watched The Friendship Onion podcast those two especially are SO funny. Oak if you ever get chance to find the extended DVDs with the Cast Commentary feature, I highly recommend it. Billy and Dom are the highlight they're so funny but it's all brilliant and really interesting stuff. I was so obsessed with anything any of the LOTR cast did as a young teen I even started watching LOST because of Dom Monaghan and that was a whole amazing journey in itself. Really sweet that you took the time to say that! They've been posting lots of fun pictures of them all together on instagram too. It shows what a special experience filming LOTR was that the cast are still all such good friends!
As far as how I’d rate this trilogy, I rate them as high as the first three, 10/10. They are different in their own way, made me laugh, cry and get completely immersed in this world, so they did their job for me.

I've always felt for Thorin. He lost everything when Smaug came to Erebor, and during the battle of Moria (where he lost his grandfather, father and brother). His life in Blue Mountains was a hard one. The only thing he wanted was to take back his ancestral home, and provide for his people. In the end, like his grandfather before him, Thorin succumbed to gold sickness that plagued his line (one can draw a pararell with a mental illness here), he had to watch his nephews die before his eyes, and finally, lost his own life. What an awful fate... To this day, Botfa is hard to watch for me. But I enjoyed seeing more of the dwarves in this movie, especially Dain Ironfoot. The battle itself was epic.
Despite what some people say, I will always have lots of love for the Hobbit trilogy. I adore young Bilbo, and I adore the dwarves. Plus, the stuff with Galadriel and Sauron was badass.

These movies are so fun. The shot of Gandalf and Bilbo just sitting together after everything is just masterful silent acting. When I saw this in the theater, obviously it has been a couple of years, and people theorised "what if it goes back to old Bilbo and we end with Gandalf coming to the door at the start of Fellowship" and I was like omg they do that I'm not gonna be able to handle it and when they did it i audibly gasped and started crying immediately 🤣🤣 I'm even welling up now just thinking about it hahahah. As a fan of LOTR for 10 years, for them to do that full circle was just..beautiful.
I met Sylvester McCoy (Radagast) at a con once. Very sweet man, he signed my copy of the Hobbit and said I had a lovely name. I was baffled that the line to meet him was so short.
So glad I found this channel back in the day. This (and other series like Harry Potter) have been such a blast, and a wild ride. Something awesome about seeing someone excited to bring their friends into something new, and seeing those friends love it just as much. Can’t wait to see what you all get into next 🙂
So, fun little backstory bit about the Ring, the Rings, and the rings. When Sauron was beginning to make the Rings (the 3, 7, & 9) he wanted to make sure everything would go correctly first. So, he made a boat load of 'test' rings. Each and every one of these rings were simple bands of plain gold. Most of them could turn you invisible. There were other effects some had, but, it isn't delved into much what they were. The reasons Gandalf never suspects that ring Bilbo has is the One Ring is for that reason. He thought it was one of the 'test' rings as Bilbo had never shown any sign of corruption while he had 'the ring.' It was only after Bilbo freaks out on Gandalf about giving up the Ring that Gandalf realized what a fool he'd been for nearly a century and rode to Gondor to research. There are theories that he made the One Ring a simple band of gold so that it would more easily be mistaken of one of the 'magic rings' and be used by the one who found it.
I love a lot about these movies, but their tone is all wrong (and there shouldn't have been a love triangle.) The book had a feel to it, like a father telling stories to his kids. Because thats exactly what it was. The Hobbit was originally bedtime stories that Tolkien would tell to his children, and he only started writing them down because the kids kept finding inconsistencies.
Something that I thought about on my last re-watch of these movies: oaths and promises are cosmically binding in Middle-Earth, and breaking them has dire consequences. It's why Boromir and Gollum died when they betrayed Frodo. So although I don't believe it was Tolkien's intention when he wrote the hook, I do think it can be interpreted that when Thorin broke his promise to share the wealth of Erebor with the people of Laketown, he sealed his own doom.
Personally, I love this trilogy. It's different from Lord of the Rings, but it still has plenty of its own worth. And even though the extended editions don't add as much runtime as they did for the Lord of the Rings movies, there's still some great additions that flesh the world out even more, especially in regards to the Necromancer/Sauron.
The Hobbit was written for children. The Lord of The Rings was written for adults. I think that largely accounts for why The Lord of The Rings is more epic; it comes from the books. (If you wonder why there was a love story in a book for kids, there wasn't. There were no female characters in the book, The Hobbit.)
The best explanation I've heard for the eagles is imagine one of your kids asking you to give them a piggyback ride all the way to your local mall 20 miles or more away and you have to walk the whole way carrying them on your back.

When I first watched these movies it didn’t bother me much because I haven’t read the books but as time has passed, it does irk me because it interferes with the characters personalities.
It was studio interference, and Philippa Boyens, that gave us Tauriel. Evangeline Lily (Tauriel) was pissed that they breached her contract with such a bait-and-switch

Like Mason said, Gandalf doesn't think Bilbo has the One Ring.
He only thinks it is a random magic ring, which explains why he rides to Gondor in the first LOTR in order to verify if it is the One Ring 60 years later after he hears that Gollum was tortured and revealed Bilbo stole the One Ring from him.
Otherwise, he would have tried to destroy it right away.

It is sad, that we know that Baldin dies in Moria (it was his grave in LOTR)
When you watch behind the scenes some of the orcs in LOTR played the dwarves. That is worth the time to meet the dwarves and how they created them.
Yeah, Jed Brophy (Nori) plays several parts in LOTR. Notably, he plays the orc Aragorn is fighting when he goes over the cliff in Two Towers
The reason the gold has such a hold is that a Dragon tends to infect it hoard with a "Greed Disease", over and above the effect gold has already. (Which is why the treasure is referred to as "Cursed" by some of the others. You saw how just the treasure affected Thror, Thorin's Grandfather, so it's hold over Thorin was much stronger, as it had been thoroughly infected sitting under Smaug for 60 odd years. It says much about Thorin's character that he eventually overcame it, basically breaking the curse.

Do y'all remember the huge battle in the prologue of Fellowship of the ring with Sauron in physical form , young Elrond, isildur, and his Father Elendil ( Aragorns ancestors) that whole event with him failing on throwing the one Ring back into Mount doom ? That entire part of the Second Age is what you're gonna see . Some other stuff in the Second Age too. Thing is why it's so different with this is cause this doesn't really have a beginning Middle end sort of thing. It's not from 1 book itself or group kind of like how the Hobbit or LOTR are. It's from appendices, extra texts from jrr Tolkien ( mostly in the extra categories in the back of the books and also the main book that has most of those texts together, Silmarillion. ) It's practically like Bible text lol
But altogether, they've confirmed, combined in one series of 5 season's ( supposedly almost 50 hours long they're going for ) we should be seeing the Rise and Downfall of Numenor ( Aragorns ancestors original island kingdom) the making of the Rings of power ( 3 for Elf lords , 7 for dwarf Lords and 9 for kings of Men, and the one that Sauron secretly made 😁) War of elves and Sauron and eventually the rise and downfall ( ish ) of Sauron in the War of the Last Alliance ( all that happened in the prologue of LOTR fellowship of the ring) There's some great things to be excited about . One of the cool things about this show that is practically confirmed is we might be seeing flashbacks of the First Age . Way way before then . When Sauron was just a lieutenant for the OG Dark lord Morgoth. That whole Age is Crazy lol .
I'm hyped and we're so damn close to it lol been following it ever since it was a rumor like back in 2017 or something and now we're hear. Some clips looked awesome. I just can't wait to inject more Middle Earth in my veins lol To see Moria in it's prime along with some places like Numenor, Rivendell when It was built ( I'm Assuming. Along with Mordor) Eregion, Lindon, many awesome places you'll see in here. I hope it's great

Awesome experience, Oak, nothing like it. Those are always amazing, though I've never had doubts that meeting any of those actors would be a positive experience. Whoever edits these (I think Diamond Dave does if I'm not mistaken) is great and doesn't get nearly enough credit.
I dug the HP patronus, wand and sorting vids but this was the one I was really anticipating.

I still wanna see a channel react to the making off of these movies from the DVDs. That's per se is an amazing ride. I had no idea how more than awesome these movies were to the point I see them now after knowing how they were made.
We had a talking CGI dragon with facial expressions in "Dragonheart" (1996) already.
Guys, i have to say watch this one of the trilogy again but the extended Version.
Trust me, out of All the movies, this one is criminally cut down, especially when the battle between elves and dwarves Start.
I was in shock how many essential parts they cut out from the Fight between the orcs as well. It is a shame because it makes Thorins redemption so much more impactful.

Yeah, it's weird how the extended version doesn't add anything to Alfrid's storyline and all 🙃 they literally cut none of this dude's scenes and yet, cut so many about Thorin, the dwarves, Gandalf's journey with Sauron and all. Impossible to comprehend...
I enjoy these films and find them decent, but overall I don't think they compare to LOTR. It was saddening to see this series be so divisive, and have no Oscar success like LOTR.
I thought Tauriel and Kili was a little....unrealistic. they had like a brief conversation. But otherwise so much action and I loved the new characters.
Not as good as Lord of the Rings but the Hobbit movies are MILES better than a lot of the other garbage hollywood is throwing at us =)
And if I understand correctly, Sauron's banishment from Dol Guldur leads to the start of the Shadow of Mordor game
Making Thorin's funeral a deleted scene was 'the Darkening of Númenor' level offence! There were many things that could've been done better in the Hobbit trilogy, but cutting out Thorin's funeral is an outrage!

Y'all should check out the 1977 Hobbit animated movie by Rankin/Bass! It's got more songs from the book, a slightly whimsical art style, and at 78 minutes is a much more concise adaptation of Bilbo's story than the film trilogy is.

I grew up watching the LOR movies and the hobbit came out when I was in college so I wasn’t able to see it. When pt2 came out my roommates bought us tickets and we watched pt1 before going to the theaters. To say I was pumped and jolted to the car lol

To me it's a solid trilogy, as someone who not just read the books but also went through the appendix because I was completely obsessed with knowing minuscule details I love how the writers went there to get more info to give more to the story. It's funny how originally they just wanted to make one film, I think it would've have been ok but this is so much better.

There is a lot of symbolism related to World Wars of the past in these movies.
Some people say you could have watched the extended edition... it's less significant than LOTR trilogy, because "most" of scenes are just prolonged action fights, but they also put more emphasis and hinting the role of the other Rings of power. Actually the very same curse/sickness of the dwarves came right from the corruption of the Seven Dwarven Rings: they are too resiliant to become Ringwraiths (the Nine) but brought ruin and flame an all their possessors.

I love all of them and also I think Thorin could have easily moved the pale orcs blade over to the left more and then let the orc stab him still but because he moved it over to the left more it avoided his chest and heart but went through his arm and most likely cut his arm off but he would still be able to stab the orc with his sword and kill him but that's just my opinion on what I think he could have done
Gandalf didn't know the magic ring was the one ring. As he said "There are many magic rings and none are to used lightly." He assumed it was a lesser ring of power. It's why he had to leave in LOTR to find out if it was the one ring.
