Clean my throttle bodies and ICV helped with my wandering idle. This is good routine maintenance, especially on a high mileage car.

I would like to thank you for the detailed work you did in this video, l did the same on my E46 M3, and the results were unbelievable, smoother ride, more power, very stable engine, the car returned to its original glory.
Keep up the great work!
Nice video
I’m in the process of replacing the Starter ,since the intake manifold is off I will be doing the same procedure as you !
Also recommend replacing the engine temperature sensor( there is 2) while you are in there ! It’s sorta common to fail and easy to replace when manifold is off .
If readers are wondering where this sensor (#1)is , it’s literally to the left side of idle air control valve ( the one he removed) .
The second(#2) coolant sensors is easy
It’s mounted on the lower left of coolant hose , down by the bottom of radiator and is simple to remove
And of course this one never fails lol
Tip : you don’t need to drain the coolant, if your quick you do it on the fly and maybe loose a couple of drops 💧
You can install the airbox clips onto the airbox before you reinstall. Just tighten them on the first click. Also some lubricant on the outside of the throttle bodies makes the airbox easier to get on.
Sean - for putting the clamps back on, what you call stage 1, I normally do before connecting the air box to the throttle bodies. It leaves plenty of space to get the rubber hoses on and eliminates the annoying part of having to fish the clamps around since it gets tight around all the icv hoses and fuel railing for cylinders 3-6. Good vid though. Love how you fabricated your own oil run off hose.
Great point Stas! Yes, that's the better move. By the time I realized that, I already installed the box on the throttle bottles so I decided to fish the clamps instead of removing everything again. Thanks!
How in the world did you fish all 6 clamps on?? I got to #3 and it's damn near impossible, I can't even imagine doing the rest like this. The first two were ok but I think I'm going to have to take the manifold back off to pre-install the clamps...
Thank you for your video: cleaned the throttle bodies of my Z4M today. Your video made it so easy to do the job! Keep up the good work! 👍
Nice vid, well demonstrated and explained. My own M3 had a rough idle a while back, but it was down to the MAF alone. I had a good idea how it was supposed to be done, but now I definitely know how to clean the bodies and ICV if I ever need to. Thanks!
Thanks! From what I read online, removing the intake manifold sounded difficult and daunting. It was actually quite easy.
Thank you bro. Followed video and got the job done. Cars running great. Now gotta find where that small oil leaks coming from. Lol.
literally did this 2 weeks ago and thank you for putting me on to the catch can best bang for the buck
Nice! You're welcome Jerry!
You're welcome Jerry! This build has cost so much money that I try to save money wherever I can. LOL
OK. Good video but I have a few additions. Silicone spray is your friend on this job. Spray the clamps several times to help and then after the clamps are removed, spray under the 6 rubber boots to the throttle bodies to help remove the intake. Wedge a plastic tool or screw driver under the edge & spray in. Let sit for 5 min. Allows the release of the 6 boots when removing the intake. Although I have the exact same long & curved pliers as shown in this video, I could not get a grip on the bumps on the clamps. Kept popping off! I took a dremel & cut small notches just before each end. This made a grasping point & actually did get the clamps to pop off. Also, from my experience, the air rail (adjacent to the fuel rail) HAD to be removed to get to #3 - #6 clamps. No way around it. I didn't see many vacuum lines on this engine like the non M e46 cars. But this would be the time to replace all vacuum lines considering the age of these cars. Thanks for the video. I was intimidated by those clamps. But your video eased my apprehension!
love the video! your delivery was perfect.
Thanks for the video. Super helpful. at 5:36 you clip the nipple into something, but what? I have an S54 swap that was done like 8 years ago by someone else I'm cleaning up. That nipple isn't connected to anything and I don't know what it's supposed to connect to. I don't know what that part even is. I'm learning man! If you see this I'd really appreciate help!
Thanks for the video. Was curious how to reuse the intake boot clamps before I put mine back on.
Excellent video!
I like to use a chain lube for the throttle return springs when doing this service-not sure if necessary, but I'm a bit OCD.
I actually did that too but didn't include it in the video since it's a bit unorthodox. :-)
Michael
The OCD is good when you're dealing with things like this. Thanks for the tip.
how do you unclip the 6 throttle body hose clamp like a piece of cake
i have the same long needle plier and I kept slipping
Thanks for the DIY!
Great video . Another needed diy for my m3.👍
Thanks! Definitely good maintenance.
Is there no risk with the butterfly open and spraying the cleaner in there? I don't know if I can bring myself to do that.
Hello dear friend.
By chance you have the vehicle manual where it specifies the tests that can be carried out in the ICV. I'm having idle instability issues on my 1990 e30 320i. I came across a magazine article that said between the center pin (+) of the ICV connector and ground, you need to measure the battery voltage. And between the center pin (2) and pins 1 and 3, it should measure 10 VDC. In my case, pin 2 and pin 3 measure 4.1 VDC. I measured it at the output of the ECU (positive battery and pin 4 ECU) and the value is the same. I changed the ECU and the output voltage value between positive battery and pin 4 ECU is 4.1 VDC. Some help ?. Greetings from Chile, South America.
Appreciate you! Im having an issue where my m3 will shut off when im at a stop or on nuetral. Im going to try this!
Hey I'm having that exact issue, how did this work out for you? I'm thinking ill be needing to try this.
Did either of you guys figure out the issue?
@@FriendsNFilms did you figure out yours? Currently troubleshooting inability to hold an idle, next step is to get fuel pressure readings for me
@@mittortz I ended up cleaning my throttle bodies & doing the reset. Held idle just fine after that
@@FriendsNFilms Jealous. I've cleaned throttle bodies, ICV, MAF; replaced all fuel system components; smoke tested and replaced intake boot gaskets... still not sure what the problem is :( ugh
Great video!! very helpful, it sure will help me when I tackle this job. Do you think its ok to use carb cleaner on the TB's and ICV? or should I buy intake/TB cleaner?
Thanks! I think you'll be fine using carb cleaner. I used the cleaners I had laying around. LOL
Carb cleaner is gd
Karim nassef
The spray fluid name I bought from Napa was Throttle Body and Carburetor Cleaner. So they are one in the same fluid.
Nice video as the others. So whats was the issue or symptoms when the butterflys are dirty. Thx
Rough idle or poor performance. I think it's a good maintenance thing to do every now and then.
Great vid bro!! How's the manual? Much better I'm guessing no problem ha😁👍
Thanks! Manual is great! Almost broken in so I can start smashing it soon. I have a track event tomorrow - track video up next week.
SeanS54 Lookin forward to it"
I did a manual swap on my M3 E46 about 6 months ago and now I'm having an issue with my idle dropping and stalling out my car. I've cleaned the ITBs and the ICV and it seemed to help at first, but after a couple of days the issue came back. Any ideas?
It could be a dirty or bad MAF (on your intake). Could be a vacuum leak. You should also do this if you've never done it: ua-cam.com/video/HoTuvCVdaYs/v-deo.html
Did you ever come up with a solution? I'm having the same problems on my e46 m3
Did either of you guys ever figure out the issue?
Excuse me, where is mounted the sensor tps in bmw 325i 2003?
Sorry, I'm not sure. You can refer to www.realoem.com for detailed schematics.
How come you used the ugly-ist clamps for ICV ?
Not as ugly as you.
I still have my SMG stuff, I'm guessing im going to lose my fluid and need to bleed the system after I reinstall everything?
Yes you will.... Unless you can position the intake manifold to the side and out of the way without disconnecting the SMG fluid reservoir.
SeanS54
Oh! Thanks for the heads up. I have SMG and for some reason I thought when you disconnected The fill line it was self-sealing. Apparently it's not.
I'm definitely not going to disconnect the line. I'll figure something out ....like you said... put it off to the side.
Cool!
Cool!
@Sean
no, YOU are cool! I decided to finally take things in to my own hands. I bought 90% of what I need(jack stands, ramps, chocks, floor jacks, MORE tools, BMW jack pad adapters (need four more!), clamp remover kit for Euro clamps and more).
All that is useless if I screw up or break something due to lack of knowledge.
That is where you (and others) are a God send! Thanks SO much for all your vids. Subbed an Liked.
Do you have EGR delete?
I have a SAP (secondary air pump) delete.
I like to clean with microfiber towel than use toothbrush to clean
That's a good idea.
Michael Broski
As I watched the video all I could think of was scrubbing with a nice toothbrush in there after a microfiber wipe.
Sounds and looks so easy untill you get the the smg fluid tank
Luckily I did mine after it was converted to manual. You can probably just prop the airbox in the engine bay without disconnecting the smg fluid reservior. As long as you have clearance to the throttle bodies and ICV.
SeanS54 oh really so you had it quite easy then lol. No you can remove it without taking the smg fluid pipes off and then its a case of risking problems with the smg from taking it off.and as we all know the smg its about as good choclate tea pot at the best of times let alone once you start messing with it.
I hear you on the SMG drama- hence to decision to go manual. LOL
SeanS54 yeah i did think about doing mine but its alot of money and time. So now its on ebay for sale
That's not a bad idea either. When I decided to do my swap I already had a lot of money and parts into.
Sorry you rushed through that way too fast and you call that a test drive LOL
