In the heart of Europe lies a nation often regarded as the tulip capital of the world- the Netherlands. Did you know that Dutch farmers grow a staggering 200 million tulips each year? This is the story of Dutch tulip farming and it all begins with the earth itself - over 200,000 hectares of Dutch land, meticulously dedicated to tulip cultivation.
The tale of tulips in the Netherlands dates back to the 17th century when these flowers arrived on Dutch shores from the Ottoman Empire. They quickly captured the Dutch imagination, and what followed became known as "Tulip Mania." During this period, tulip bulbs were traded at extreme prices, reaching exorbitant levels that equated to the value of houses and entire estates. This speculative frenzy eventually led to the world's first recorded economic bubble.
