Strange! I have the Soul and drove down to 3 % on motorway with keeping 90kmphand recently went down to 2% with still beeing able to drive 70kmph - acceleration was shity but still enough to not block traffic. Maybe temp effect? It was around 0 degrees. Thank you for this test! I need to test this asap because I was so sure and calculated to drive down to 1-2% on motorway. I was in eco mode with Hvac at 19 Degrees. Btw. We as a family drive ca 3000km / month and never had such an experience. We usually charge at 10% 🤷♂️🙌⚡️
Hi Kris, great video. On the highway, regen Level2 will impact you more. Should have either used cruise control or Regen Level1. ECO+ mode would have probably prevented the Turtle mode you had. Great video still keep it up!
It's about as aerodynamic as a brick shaped car can be lol I get like 30mpg in my ICE 2021 soul S on the highway at 70mph. I don't like how high it revs when going 80-85 though, and 80 is the max speed limit in my state. I usually stay at 80 or lower
I have a e-Niro MY20 (no BMS update). With a warm battery pack ,I drove it to 0,5%. 85km/h on the hightway was no problem with 1-2% SOC. The last hundred meters on the normal street, 50 km/h were not problem. After connecting to the HPC charger, I got over 70kW (bat temp over 25°C). Your battery was to cold or your e-Soul has another BMS SW version.
You know the answer to the noise from the boxy Soul? Crank up that 10 speaker Harmon/Kardon sound system (with added light-show to further distract you from the noise) :-)
Hi Kris! I have a Kona 2020 and if the pack is cold like below 10 deg C, and the outside temp around -12 or so and climbing a good long hill. I've had even around 30% remaining drastic power reduction below 40KW which really is dangerous! Funny thing was that as soon as I reached the top of the hill and I applied the brakes and regen cut in it all went back to normal. I guess this how they want to protect a cold pack but it is very unsettling. As well when I have gotten to a low state less than 5% I've been limited to around 4kw similar what you experienced, but when the pack is warm and in the summer this does not happened at all, at least to me. I wish they would fix this, but when I asked the dealer if they have heard of anyone else having this problem, I get the usual stupid look and response " Why no we never heard of anything like that happening before." Maybe something will be done down the road, but I have a feeling that somebody will have to die before anything gets done. Sorry for the small rant! Keep up the great work love your videos!
You need to turn off the heater and air conditioner. Then you have to stop and start the car again. Then you will be able to drive longer and get more power even after 0% This according to Kia
Well, that‘s interesting? Usually the UA-camrs try not to stop, because once stopped, the car refuses to go any further. You see that in a lot of videos. It also makes sense to me because as long as You continue, the car might expect You to be in danger, still. The moment You stop, the car think’s You‘re save now, and quitt‘s. So, if KIA’s behave differently, that’s great news! Have You got a link to this KIA information, please?
It did this to me at 6% battery , motorway speed with 2 red cells left and its went to turtle mode z then within 1km to 1cell flashing although it said 15km left...(Miles) I literally not kidding i had to start and stop the car at least 70-80 times i can see it in the kia app ....to go 5m then it wouod stop, that uphill, reached top 50m then gliding down to supercharger where it got to 20% immediately showing 61kw charge at 150kw charger
Look at the size of the buffer on an electric car! The E-SOUL has only 3 kWh, in the winter test the 52% for the return are not available: 5% of buffer lost and not announced by the BMS? = 47% only for the return so breakdown! It should be noted that the GAWs have a very large buffer to guarantee a tolerance in winter (they are not 150 kg ready), and a lot of cobalt for a flat load curve! (ecological approach in relation to the Scx of their SUVs). Well the E-SOUL has the same SCX as the e-tron, but not the same battery. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
My old Leaf would stop showing range & state of charge when there was 10% left, so of course l kept pushing it with the inevitable result! I now have a Soul which l quickly learnt has a accurate state of charge read out, so do we want a buffer, or an accurate reading? Personally l like accurate information.
That is super strange. I have seen eNiros driving to 0% SOC and it is the same Battery and BMS. I wonder what could have been the error in the car. More considering it has a 3% extra (approximately) since the Brito capacity of the battery is no less than 67 kWh. Was winter mode On in the battery management on the infotainment?
Even that Kia claims they have heat pumps I have never seen one with heat pump. Space left of inverter is always empty, even in Canadian models. Kona and Niro have it but this model not. Kris can you send the photo with the hood open.
Haha, we had to get rid of our old Leaf 24 kWh due to stuff like this. That car was really unreliable at low SoC when it is cold. The GOM would start dropping very rapidly at low SoC....... Now we both have a tesla. I have yet to see a car that has a more reliable SoC and also the estimated arrival % is very accurate. Gives so much comfort!
Hi, very dangerous behaviour indeed with 2% left. :-( Did you drive in ECO mode? because that can explain the colder temperature inside the car whilst driving. But very high comsumption though. :-( It is a pity that it is getting warmer. Then you will have not the same cold conditions when testing Polestar 2 PP with the newest software. :-(
You know what? I think the car calculated the necessary behaviour to reach the charger at last! You see in the video that the car is well aware of the charging station nearby. So, what if it‘s not a bug, but a clever survival feature??? Other cars might have run faster at the end, but stopped earlier, like 1 km before the charger. Like my experience with JEEPs! They might break in the middle of nowhere, but they always manage to get You home anyway! Try to look at it this way! :-)
Why would you drive it to such a low state of battery? You are driving with an ice vehicle state of mind. Full to empty is not the way to drive an ev. If you watch some of the more grown up reviews of ev's you will learn.
Superb test !! Hope you can test the ID.4 & ID.3 soon !!!
Keep this wonderful work man !!

Yeah, I think it's a temp effect. It also drops much quicker when it's freezing.
Superb test by the way, keep up the good work!

That was awesome!!! So exciting! You should do this every time !! ;p
Thanks! I try to push these EVs as much as possible every time I test one, but this is dangerous...
I knew this was going to be good when he kept going in 120 km/h in the Kia Brick :D

You have to do the Kristiansand trip with it, winter test 👍🏻
YoLo bruh!! Man, I would never go to 0% SoC... But nice merch :)
Seems the Koreans need a battery temp of 25C in order to attain full charging speed.

Ouch! That was not what you should get from any EV. Glad you made it.
I am interested in buying a new BMW i3 2020 or 2021 I would love to get a review and a test vehicle review
I have run out in winter in my 2012 leaf luckily I had some people push me off road or to a charger

Hi Kris, do you use snow tires in the winter? How does the FWD work in snowy/rainy conditions? I live in Canada so this matters to me.
6:55 did you try the cruise control hack instead of the foot pedal (Gas)?
My old Leaf would stop showing range & state of charge when there was 10% left, so of course l kept pushing it with the inevitable result! Yeah, that is not the way to do it!
Chris you should say “Performs like a Jag” in the title. I.e goes into injured turtle by 2%.
Thank you for these tests.
Have Kia advised why it went so slow - as I'm sure there is a buffer on the e-Soul also?
That is super strange. I have seen eNiros driving to 0% SOC and it is the same Battery and BMS. I wonder what could have been the error in the car. you should not go under 5% in every korean ev, especially uphill.

2% is zero. If the car is practically unusable, then 2% should be considered empty.
