Spoiler Alert: The man chasing him was in his fathers image, but the man who got to him and fathered him was Emperor Haile Selassie the Ethiopian King who Rastafarians philosophy and identity are based on. The ring was a gift from Ethiopian royalty from a later generation. The burning sugar cane fields were depicting the effects of slavery and colonialism and turmoil and the young Bob was running from his fathers resentment originally but ran into the accepted of Selassie. *Bob never actually met the Emperor physically but did so philosophically through his and Marcus Garvey’s message.

@pitchblacktv, your synopsis is dead on. May I add the secondary story is the role Rita played in his life. The time frame he was in the UK he was with another woman but his greatest album, Exodus, could not be created until Bob made the call and asked Rita to join him and help him make that album. Also, when he found out he had cancer, it was Rita he turned to not those other side chicks.

The movie left a lot to be desired. I've seen mind blowing biopic and this is in the notorious big or all eyes on me level. The acting was great but the story wasn't fleshed out well. Prob would be better if it were a TV movie and didn't have expectations of a major production

I agree and as an American, who studied and knows a lot about the true real life of Bob Marley, I was extremely disappointed. They left out so much good information and I love the actors. They did a great job. I just wish I had a better storyline they cut out a couple of things that they could’ve left and it would’ve made for more well-rounded story.

As a Bob Marley fan here, I wish they would've touched more on his childhood, his very beginning in music, and his death. Shoot! I even wish they would've touched the part with Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh. But I understand a movie can only last max 3 hrs so, other than that, it was a good movie.

His music was massive in the 70s and 80s, in fact he was probably more popular with white people than black, you couldnt go anywhere without hearing his music, it was very powerful and uplifting, you needed a good sound system or hifi to listen to it properly, most people had a half decent system back then.

WHAT YOU CALL A WIN FOR JAMAICA IS A LOSS FOR THE MAJORITY OF JAMAICANS AND RASTA PEOPLE.
AND YOU ARE THE ONE BEING DISRESPECTFUL BY TRYING TO CONVINCE RASTAS AND JAMAICANS THAT THIS IS A GOOD MOVIE.
      IT IS A MOVIE ABOUT A MAN BORN THERE, THE CULTURE, AND MUSIC;
AND YOU SEE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH ACCEPTING A DILUTED VERSION OF BOB, REGGAE AND RASTA AND JAMAICA BECAUSE YOU CAN'T ACCEPT THE REAL AUTHENTIC BOB, RASTA, AND JAMAICAN CULTURE.
YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND US AND WE DON'T EXPECT YOU TO SINCE YOU REALLY DON'T CARE.
YOU'RE JUST USERS AND MISERS AND FOREIGNERS THAT COULD CARE LESS.
YOU CANNOT CONVINCE ANY REAL PERSON THAT THIS IS A GOOD MOVIE WHEN IT IS A DISTORTION OF A REAL PERSON:
HIS NAME IS NESTA ROBERT MARLEY.
      🥱
      THE MOVIE IS GARBAGE.

the movie won't resonate with alot of western audiences because honestly it was made for jamaicans. I watched it today in Kingston jamaica and the audiences in the cinema were laughing, crying and gave it a standing ovation. We understood the movie wasn't about telling his whole life story. We knew it was to highlight the civil war in the 70s and and how it impacted bob. the movie was telling a story about a specific period in his life that led up to making the exodus album. You have no idea how impactful it was to see the nyabinhi drums and the italics language that the rasta's speak in full display. when they cut to the scene of young rita and bob and rita said they called her blackie tutus, I nearly cried cause I can relate. And most importantly this was the best interpretation of our accent. the mannerisms were so down to the bone. I got goospe bumps. I know it may seem like it's all about making him look overly good but in truth this is the typical behaviour of the jamaican rasta, they walk with a message of love and peace and that's the image we know of bob. Yes we know he had multiple baby mama's and was never faithful. but do we know who bob really was? In this movie we could see that bob was scared, he didn't want to come back to our island because of what happened to him. We saw that he was conflicted about being half white and not being accepted by his white family. its so much I can say but honestly if you're not jamaican grown and immersed in the culture it may not be for you. I was sitting there while watching and the first thing that came to my mind was that I don't think the global audience would understand the message. And based on the reviews I'm seeing I was right. But I am happy they chose to please the jamaican audience by telling this story the way we want it to be told. It's not supposed to be a history lesson.

The movie for me was ok, i wish they could have explained the political environment going on in Jamaica with two European backed so called leaders. I wish it would have explained or showed Bobs Pan Africanism ideology. But the movie seemed to be a concert. At times it was a little hard to understand what they were saying.
As far as his father it was saying since his biological father neglected him and the Black man on the horse towards the end seemed to be Haile Selassie saying now he's bobs father. But i will give it a 7 out of 10 if i was rating.

I love Bob Marley‘s music I am American. My favorite was Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Alpha Blondie and so on but Bob Marley was the leading person. I love his message love his family Rita Marley will always be the queen. My daughter was born May 11, 1981 from the little bit of footage I’ve seen it’s too much of a western flavor. The Rastafarian spirit is kind of last-minute Peter Tosh would’ve been wonderful. Peter Tosh should have been in that movie. I would’ve loved to have seen a Jamaican person play Bob Marley, who played the part of Bob Marley in this upcoming movie. I resent the fact that the person who played Bob Marley is not from Jamaica. I have nothing against the brother, but it should’ve been someone of Jamaican descent most definitely I am surprised his children didn’t speak up more is it one of those things where you Play along to get along . I’m 72 years old I know Bob Marley’s history and if you knew his history you would understand more why millions of his fans are gonna be not so kosher with this movie at all it does not have the spirit of Bob Marley there

I'll explain that father and ring part, I certainly think you need to have a certain knowledge of Bob Marley's life before you see this movie. Anyway, the scene where a man showed up in a horse surrounded by fire was shown at different points in the movie, giving a new meaning each time. The actual symbolism (and it's quite deep so I don't have the perfect words) is, that his father left him at a young age, so as an adult, he accepted the Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as his father and savior. If you notice, the first few times the man on the horse appeared, he seemed to be white, but in the end, it was a black man. Bob Marley's father was white (So more like from abandonment to acceptance). It was the Emperor who sent him the ring. His wife encouraged him into the faith, believing that Jesus had returned in the form of a black man.
Hope it's clear cos it's somewhat hard to explain.

Two years ago, I attended Ziggy Marley concert Tribute to my Father. He performed 2 hours of his father's music.
I thought the movie was good. It focused on his masterpiece album Exodus. Considering he wrote these songs in London, the album is a longing to return to Jamaica- a peaceful Jamaica with equally for the people. I have a greater appreciation of his music.

In my opinion, a more successful and oscar worthy version of a Bob Marley Biopic would be titled 'Rastaman'. Because Rastafarianism was the heart and Soul of Bob Marley's brief but colorful life. If the movie makers had gone with that, it would make an excellent foundation to tie together his childhood experiences, his musical career, his influence in the genesis of reggae music involving legendary producers like Lee Scratch Perry, Leslie Kong and Coxsone, his rise to super stardom, his falling out with Bunny and Peter, his relationship success and failures, the sociopolitical controversies he was involved in to his detetiorating health and last days. Also, I would expect it run up to 3 hours long and divided into chapters. With good editing, pacing, character intrigue, and killer soundtrack with original music score, 3 hours is nothing. Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' proved that. Oh well, a missed opportunity once again.

It was an Amazing movie, not only did it capture his spirit very well but also his story and his story revolves around spreading the message of jah. The actual story of bob was pretty on point but to me this movie is about ras tafari and the message it has in the reggae music.
Also i feel The one thing people will misunderstand is the god talk. God technically was before man, god is of no color, but to a Rasta they look the start of mankind as when our first primate species started to evolve. Which with factual evidence we knew did stem from Africa.
Which is why they say the god of man to them is darker with kinkier hair and brown eyes because all of man roots back to those first humans. However god, Rasta goes even before mankind. It’s life and we are all life. I and I

I only casually know Bob Marley's music and his story, so for me, this movie was a bit hard to follow. I left the theater still not fully sure what the plot was all about. Also, the Jamacian accents and cultural references seemed very authentic from my outsiders perspective, but the result was that, for me, it was a bit hard to understand the dialect and really follow what was going on. The music was obviously great, and I enjoyed the film, but I would have done things a bit differently.

I just came back today from watching and I almost walked out because it was so boring and inconsistent, what I have loved about him was his message of unity and humility and his music is so powerful. There are not many stars who use their platform to spread love, his song “three little birds” has such beautiful lyrics. The movie was so boring and chugs along with no real pace or climax. Kingsley was beautiful on screen and brilliant and that was all That I took away from it. So disappointing. And yes the patois was hard to understand which may have added to the confusion and choppiness.

The man on the horse has levels to it. It’s meant to look just like his father throughout the movie. They showed us the picture of his dad on a horse for a reason. The silhouette looked the same. However, we find out the Ethiopian leader gave him the ring, which is what the rider is LITERALLY meant to resemble…. BUT. Throughout the movie we learn bobs real name is translated to messenger. We also learn the Rasta believe in a black god. We also know the Lion (which is pictured on the ring) has a religious meaning. I believe the man on the horse was meant to be an imagery of god, calling bob his son and to be a messenger to the people. It was a powerful moment for me as his purpose was truly revealed just before the end of his life. And just as he made it full circle to deliver the message to his people. He passed

I was so disappointed by this film! I feel I've been robbed! No soul, no transcendence. They just used Bob's name in vain to make a quick buck. Ziggy Marley has definitely no talent. They were supposed to be talking about a radical artist, a militant, a rebel, a genius... You don't see that in the film. We don't get into the complexity of the man he must have been, everything is smooth and doesn't have the accent of truth. And we certainly don't see how the CIA murdered Bob by offering him poisoned sneakers! The trailer has more emotion than the whole movie! They mustn't get away with taking the public for fools and believing they can make money so easily. They've destroyed his message, which is why this film doesn't even last two hours, because that was the only objective. They're hiding the whole truth about Bob!

I just finished watching the movie and was very disappointed. From the opening lines that were put on the screen, l said that should have been at the end of the movie. Once, l got over the actor not looking, sounding, or dancing close to Bob Marley, l could focus on the essence of what l was viewing. The theme as l saw it was he was a unitifing force in jamaica. As a producer, Ziggy could have dived more into his childhood as a starting point than climax to what he was a great reggae artist worldwide. There was not much showing of Jamaica's beautiful landscape more of London, England, which was frustrating as he is a jamaicain icon. The whole time, you're waiting to see "The one love peace concert" with Manley and Seaga two opossing leaders of the political parties. all you got was an olding video of their backs turned for a few moments to the audience. Overall, l wanted to support this biopic of Bob as my heritage is Jamaican and see it in the theater, but coming away saddened that a better product could not have shown made to honor Bob Marley.
