    -----------------
The Austin 1800, also known as the 'Landcrab', was a car that never achieved its production targets due to its unconventional appearance. However, it was the second Car of the Year and the largest front-wheel-drive car in the British motor industry at the time. The oldest surviving example of the Austin 1800 is a pre-production model built in 1963 and registered in 1964. The car was initially intended to be a replacement for the Austin A60 Cambridge/Morris Oxford, but it was eventually launched as an additional model with a 1.8-litre engine. The Austin 1800 faced challenges in terms of its appearance and was often compared to more conventional cars like the Ford Corsair and the Singer Vogue. Owners also complained about the car's tendency to burn oil, awkward driving position, and lack of power steering. Despite these challenges, the Austin 1800 was praised for its road holding, comfort, and handling qualities. Production of the Austin 1800 ended after six years and 386,811 units were produced. The pre-production model, registered as NOF 531, is believed to be the only one left and is currently being offered for sale.

I worked on the Austen 1800 2200 and the Wolseley six in the early 70s I first started on the production line fitting door rubbers then from there to fitting dash panels I used to fit the wooden dash panels on the Wolseley six that were really heavy but a beautifully dash and the dash for the police cars that were a mass of wire's and cables to sort out .But on the whole i really enjoyed my time working there .I thought they were a very solid car and very comfortable. Me and my wife even had a Wolseley for a wedding car .

Austin 1800 This was a very beautiful and a modern looking car back in the 1970's when i saw them here when i was a boy. I live in South Asia and i saw a few of these cars on the roads here back in those days, and i liked them for their good looks.
My late grandfather used only Austin cars in his life and lastly he owned a beautiful white colour Austin Crambridge A55 Mk II Farina model car bought down from England through the local agents in 1959. He used this car until his passing away in 1966. Afterwards my uncles maintained this car. In the 1970's when those A55 Mk II's looked outdated, the arrival of this Austin 1800 was fresh and very welcoming! But i am not aware that this model of cars were made since the early 1960's. I now noted the similarities of the front grille of both car models, Cambridge A60 and this model 1800. It was sad to see that such a beautiful and modern looking car did not do well on the market at that time mainly due to some technical faults.
    Very good memories!!....
    Thank you for this video!

It is sad to think that so many car buyers preferred the utterly conventional Ford Cortina over this advanced machine. However, I do get why it didn't sell very well. It had awkward styling, it was a weird size in between two classes, the fascia looked so cheap and out of place in a car of this class and it had the bus like driving position, there was only 1 engine option for years until the 2200 arrived and there was only 1 body style.
