I'm glad you posted that. Loading 708 is still in my future. I've only dabbled so far, nothing serious and that's because the factory rifle I have is doing just fine with factory Norma and Hornady ammo, as in crazy accuracy. But that rifle has a major handicap. It's right handed. My leftie will be in process very soon. Just got the email yesterday my barrels are ready to ship. You're right on track with the fps in factory loaded premium ammunition. Without you have a 24"-26" barrel then expect a little more. Cartridges are like golf clubs if you want faster 7rem/7 PRC keep up the good work
1st and 2nd groups with those velocities, SD's and groups, in my opinion, I would be thrilled with those results with a 150 gr bullet. I know you were looking for faster velocities, but as the old saying goes, speed thrills, accuracy kills. great video.
Thank you for the video. Well done! Seems like great loading. I’ll bet it turns in tighter groups with a few more samplings at that charge. So ive always been fond of the 708. My rifle is a 20” barrel model 700 (sporter weight). I have tried and tried to get it to shoot under an inch. Only two loads have done it (occasionally). 120gr Barnes TTSX and Berger 140gr vld hunt. Still love the little handy rifle. I think the 120gr Barnes punches way above its weight. Have a great weekend.
By the way, that factory Norma Whitetail 150 grain stuff is moving a whopping 2500-ish fps in that Compact Tikka 708 of mine. Blows through deer boiler room at 300.....soooo, I can only imagine what that ABLR would do, sleeker, longer, higher BC, and going quite a bit faster
That’s right about where you should be with a 22.4” barrel. You might be able to cheat by going over book max and get closer to 2800, but it’s not worth it in my opinion. Stick with what’s most accurate. Deer won’t notice the 75 FPS difference. Those bullets are good for expansion down to about 1500 fps, so you’re good for expansion and energy out to about 700 yards as it is. If you’re dead set on speed, you can try a slightly faster powder if you’re using a compressed load of Ramshot Hunter. Superformance, StaBall 6.5 or HybridV 100 might get you closer to 2800+ with the 150’s, but honestly I think you have a winner as it is.
There are guys with way more experience with the 7-08 than me that have killed a pile of elk and mule deer with the 150 ELDX and Big Game as well. Excellent balance of speed, BC, and recoil. ELDX expands reliably down to 1800 FPS, so you can stretch its legs if you're capable of shooting longer ranges.
If you like maximized penetration and exit wounds, then the AB and partition are excellent choices. However, if you like maximum wound channels and like a fragmenting style bullet and best possible BC, the VLD, ELDM, ELDX, and TMK are fantastic. Totally personal preference depending on how you want your bullets to perform.
You're like me, the average Joe DeerTag. I don't need to cloverleaf my groups to fill a freezer with deer, pronghorn, or elk meat. Not a benchrest shooter, so I don't invest too heavily in accuracy over velocity. A healthy dose of both with my handloads, and I'm good.
My thoughts are your 3rd shot is always out of group, so your barrel is warmed up an causing a slit flyer, let it cool a bit before 3 rd shot, see what happens...
Never even thought Ramshot hunter in 7/08 but very consistent velocities there. Even tho you didn’t hit your target velocity I would be satisfied with initial test run.
I’ve just about given up on any Ramshot powders. Won’t hit the velocity or accuracy as their Hodgdon counterparts in multiple caliber and projectiles I’ve tried them in Not saying they can’t. I’ve just not had luck so reluctant to keep trying
@@hopefulballistics glad you’re getting good results! Certainly cheaper and more available than most of the hodgdon stuff. I haven’t used hunter but I’ve used TAC and found CFE223 gives better results all around over TAC. At least in my load ups. Awesome work with the 7-08!! Definitely an underdog that doesn’t get the credit it deserves
I have a love/hate relationship with my chronograph. It's nice to watch velocities and performance and pressure signs but sometimes we look at numbers and start thinking the wrong thoughts. Do you load up and pick and chose from selected nodes ?You may find 2, 3 or even possibly 4 and could chase the next node as you may get the accuracy with the speed you desire prior to pressure signs. I know we can't post photos here but looking back at some of my data you can watch group tests close, open , close and open and even close again. Have you considered ladder test method to also find these nodes? Saves on initial trigger time for sure I've found. As for the 7/08 it's a gem to load for and to use on almost all N.American game. W760 and H4350 have given me decent results over the years.
I have used ladder tests a few times. I probably don’t put in the work that many do. I’m happy with MOA groups or better, and SD velocities around 10 or under. My main focus is getting the desired velocity I want without pressure. This to me keep is fun to see the potential of the cartridge and load. But if the sd or group size is bad I scrap it.
I'm not completely sold on the Hunter powder choice at this point..might not be the best if you're in a hurry to get to the target. Sometimes slowing down a little bit gets the wink if it likes hitting the same spot.
Only ABLRs I've tried in anything so far is in 6.5PRC. They did ok at 1 MOA but I didn't work with them a lot. Too many projects ongoing at the same time. I have several in various cartridges but have yet to start with them. I've heard quite a few times ABLRs are quite finicky to load.
Did you get to 49.5 grains of powder yet? It seems your velocities are on par with most powders listed on the Hodgdon site. The highest speed I saw with a 150 was using Staball 6.5. What are the differences in numbers with this bullet at it's best accuracy/velocity, taking into account the BC compared to the 162 grain bullets you loaded at their higher velocity but lower BC? With the ABLR being softer and designed to open easier and faster than the AB, I'd take that most accurate load you shot and be done with it unless you plan on trying different powders. I looked at the Nosler book and Reloder 19 also did well. For whatever reasons I've had quite a few cartridges get better velocities in a rifle I'm shooting with a powder listed that is slower in their manual. For example, you possibly could get better speed if you try Reloder 19.
No experience with 7mm-08 or Ramshot powder but try something different first. Just curious if you're able to magazine feed with the ABLR? They look like a long OAL.
Nope I think you should scrap it all ! send me the load data and the rifle and I will dispose of them for you .... sarcasm ! I think it is looking very promising check it some more but check again in the temperature you will hunt in and the elevation also.. hunting weather is when you'll need to test it . hopefully I am making sense
I dont see why you utubers are so obsessed with velocity your groups got bigger the faster you pushed them..the 7mm08 is a 300 yd gun for game hunting.you should be able to get point blank 300 yd zero with your first load so save your barrel a little wear and go hunting.Unless your one of these u.tube long bomb at game clowns then your vids will get the three dots from me
@@hopefulballistics I get what your saying it is fun.The only advise I would give you is right it all down as you do it.Life happens and you get into other things and you wind up with a bunch of boxes of bullets with 5 to ten used out of it and you'll be wondering now where the hell did I get these trust me on this one
Truly hope you enjoy that rifle. BUT- I am sure as heck not seeing that "legendary" Tikka accuracy the Tikka fanbois rave about online..My 308 Ruger Anerican shoots that well. So did the Savages you have shot in this channel...

I always seek accuracy first. THEN velocity. I will balance the two is in "range" of my desire.
@@cw2a makes sense
I seek the accuracy first only of the upper spectrum of the speed , if it’s super accurate way slower than I want then I try another powder
The 2nd load, even though it's a little under the velocity you were hoping for, is a "load up and go hunting load" in my book. 🎯🎯
Right on, thanks

Stick with what’s most accurate. Deer won’t notice the 75 FPS difference. Those bullets are good for expansion down to about 1500 fps, so you’re good for expansion and energy out to about 700 yards as it is. If you’re dead set on speed, you can try a slightly faster powder if you’re using a compressed load of Ramshot Hunter. Superformance, StaBall 6.5 or HybridV 100 might get you closer to 2800+ with the 150’s, but honestly I think you have a winner as it is.
I appreciate it, thanks
That’s within minute of deer, elk , moose, if it’s for hunting your good mate, cheers Yogi ✌️🇦🇺
@@rosalindstewart7013 I agree, thanks!
I like ELDX, but I prefer bonded bullets.
Nosler accubond is the end all be all imo! I reload about 15 different hunting calibers
Keep it, try 140 grain for more speed
Thanks
You're like me, the average Joe DeerTag. I don't need to cloverleaf my groups to fill a freezer with deer, pronghorn, or elk meat.
Not a benchrest shooter, so I don't invest too heavily in accuracy over velocity. A healthy dose of both with my handloads, and I'm good.
I’m happy with MOA
@@hopefulballistics
You and me both, chief. 👍🏿
Just buy nosler loaded ammo then
My thoughts are your 3rd shot is always out of group, so your barrel is warmed up an causing a slit flyer, let it cool a bit before 3 rd shot, see what happens...
Try that bullet with the StaBall6.5 powder to get 2900
I appreciate it
Never even thought Ramshot hunter in 7/08 but very consistent velocities there. Even tho you didn’t hit your target velocity I would be satisfied with initial test run.
Good call, thanks
I’ve just about given up on any Ramshot powders. Won’t hit the velocity or accuracy as their Hodgdon counterparts in multiple caliber and projectiles I’ve tried them in
Not saying they can’t. I’ve just not had luck so reluctant to keep trying
I’ve had a different experience with TAC and Big Game. I got good velocity in those two.
I like Hunter made in Belgium
Right on
I have a love/hate relationship with my chronograph.
I appreciate the comment
Only ABLRs I've tried in anything so far is in 6.5PRC. They did ok at 1 MOA but I didn't work with them a lot. Too many projects ongoing at the same time. I have several in various cartridges but have yet to start with them. I've heard quite a few times ABLRs are quite finicky to load.
@@Accuracy1st I’ve heard that too. This is my 2nd go around with ABLRs. I would MOA is the best I got.
Accubonds fly great ! They love to be close to the lands not seated deep at all
@@jonah-n8l Accubonds or Accubond LONG RANGE?
Use staball 6.5
Thanks
Question:
I've seen you do this on a lot of your videos. When you create the two tests loads to verify pressure, how exactly do you load them?
They’re just lower powder charges, nothing else different.
@@Accuracy1st I’ll discuss through email
See that all the time.
No experience with 7mm-08 or Ramshot powder but try something different first. Just curious if you're able to magazine feed with the ABLR? They look like a long OAL.
@@warrenpolidori5541 I’m using long action magazines and a long action bolt stop. Feeds perfectly and easily.
@hopefulballistics Ah, yes now I do recall you made that change. Good call!
Are you shooting downhill?
Just curious. I see goall the time.
A little down hill, yes.
Definitely makes sense
A 200 yds you wouldn't even be on paper so that is not a good grouping
Wouldn’t be on paper, what are you talking about?
@@hopefulballistics nvm I was looking at the small target but if you were shooting at the middle at 200 you would hit it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I dont see why you utubers are so obsessed with velocity your groups got bigger the faster you pushed them..the 7mm08 is a 300 yd gun for game hunting.you should be able to get point blank 300 yd zero with your first load so save your barrel a little wear and go hunting.Unless your one of these u.tube long bomb at game clowns then your vids will get the three dots from me
Simply put I enjoy it and it’s what I want to do. The point is showing what the 7mm-08 is capable of.
Happy??? You hav an Tika.....maximum .5 inc gruop.... you ned to work now......
Yep I’m happy
Truly hope you enjoy that rifle.
BUT- I am sure as heck not seeing that "legendary" Tikka accuracy the Tikka fanbois rave about online..My 308 Ruger Anerican shoots that well. So did the Savages you have shot in this channel...
