For anyone watching this wondering how BC has gotten here, let me, a BC resident tell you. For decades, the political scene in British Columbia has been dominated by two parties, the BC NDP and the BC Liberals (BC Liberals not affiliated with federal Liberals), with the NDP being more left/centre, and the Liberals being more right leaning. In 2017, the Liberals won the election, but a coalition between the NDP and three Green party representatives were able to take down the Liberals, who had been governing since 2001. This led to the Liberals spiraling. After a poor showing in the 2020 snap election, the Liberals, now under the leadership of former MP Kevin Falcon, decided to take the party in a new direction by changing the name of the party so that people did not associate it with the federal Liberals. The name they chose was BC United. Unfortunately, the party grew more irrelevant after 2020. As the Liberals/United floundered, John Rustad, who was kicked out of BC United for being too extreme, joined the Conservative party and became its leader. The BC Conservatives were nothing players in BC politics, having never won a seat in any election. However, with the fall of BC United, the BC Conservatives were able to take control of the right leaning vote. The problem is that the party is filled with many people whose views are incredibly out there and downright offensive. At the end of August, Falcon came out to announce that BC United were going to be sitting out this election, and encouraged everyone to vote for the Conservatives. This means that MLA's who were elected in as BC Liberals/United candidate's or candidates planning to run for United were now stuck with the choices of not running again, joining the Conservatives if they will have them, or running as independents on their own dime. Some are choosing to run as independents and that may be a big difference maker, because with both the NDP and the Conservatives so close in the polls we could have a situation where the independent former BCU members and the couple of Greens who are elected, both of whom do not share the same political values, could hold the balance of power in a minority government. A little bit on the BC NDP, they got to power under John Horgan in 2017. After a 2020 win which gave him a majority government, he had to resign in 2023 due to a returning bout of cancer. The leadership of the party was basically given to a member of Horgan's cabinet, David Eby, so much so that when a candidate looked like she might be able to defeat him, the party exaggerated a claim that she broke campaign rules and barred her from running. Since ascending to the party leadership, Eby star has fallen with their being an overall feeling that his government has not done enough and just seems to make announcements that they are doing stuff that never happens. This is why the election is now so close. This could be setting up to be one of the craziest provincial elections ever.
