    I was a teenager in the 50's in California and nobody called the music that we listened to " rockabilly", it was always called "rock and roll" or just " rock". Rockabilly is a classification that Journalists came up with later.

      I also was a 50's teenager living in Miami which BTW was a great place at that time. We called it R&R!!!!! Elvis , Little Richard , Chuck Berry , Gene Vincent.............

      Now "rock" includes everything from Pink Floyd to Marilyn Manson, so this music really did need it's own name.

      Marin County punks were calling it "rockabilly" in the mid 70's. I grew up with Bill Halley in the 50's and it definitely was never used before the 70's. Ricky Puke called ducktail hair with pompadour in front a "cliff". Then along came... psychobilly :)

      Rockabilly was a way of separating the white southern Rock from city Do Wop or black race R&B. It was all the journalists trying to tell us how to like it. I'm sure back then people just called it Rock and Roll. I bet people would mention or knew that some music had a city vibe or a regional sound. But it was all Rock and Roll.

    When America had respect and dignity. We stood for something great.

    • @doberman1ism
      @doberman1ism 3 роки тому +12

      Bryan Charles It was a different time. World War II had ended and the American economy was very sound. Everything Americans needed was made in the United States of America from cars to refrigerators, clothes,shoes, TVs you name it everything was American made. People had gainful employment. People could live the American dream because they made a fair wage at their work and the unions were very powerful protecting the workers. Americans worked for one company for 20 years and then retired with a comfortable pension.
      People had respect and manners back then. If you didn’t you were considered a slob. Boy has that changed!
      The American dream is long gone. America is at a very serious tipping point and it doesn’t look good!

      Gosh I was just talking about the clothing styles and the music. I understand in today world, obesity is unfortunately a common problem. I'm more focused on the clothes and music, not the body types because not everyone in the 50s looked like Marilyn Monroe or Betty Page.

      @Daniel Eyre I know, it was mostly because health was more enforced back then with all those videos and less processed food, but still I was simply talking about the clothes when I made my comment, not a specific person. I understand people are becoming more overweight and unhealthy, but no need to put them down. Some really struggle to lose weight just like some thin people struggle to gain.

America never did nostalgia then it was always about the next 'new thing' same with the rare soul scene and the blues it took the "British invasion" to show white America what it had in the archives. So basically we bought up loads of old vinyl for a couple of cents a copy from huge thrift warehouses and nowadays many of those records return to the States for 100s and often 1000s of dollars. Just as well Britain has always looked a little deeper and recognised that just because something is no longer hip it deserves preservation and closer scrutiny.
