  • CLUTCH BRAKE - Luke Watson explains how to engage a gear, when your truck is stationary, without any grinding noises. The Eaton Fuller Road Ranger is the most common truck gearbox and finding a gear without grinding can be a challenge - but in this video, Luke explains the clutchbrake and how to use it - so you can find a gear easily and swiftly. This applies for crashbox gearboxes or non-synchro transmissions. 9-speed, 10-speed, 13-speed, 15-speed and 18-speed road-ranger gearboxes simplified - by Luke Watson.
    Steps to finding a gear when stationary
    1) press clutch to the floor to engage clutchbrake and hold for 3 seconds.
    2) release your clutch 5 cms from floor (disenage clutch-brake)
    3) push gear stick into the gear.

    So far after watching around 10 videos of these gearboxes you were the only one who explained this well, very frustrating for newbies this problem at stand still.

    A good teacher is someone who knows whether or not they've explained something adequately. I can tell this is the case with Ian here, because he questioned his explanation at the end there (which made me laugh btw). For what it's worth, I got what you were getting at, thanks.

    In 2008, I resigned from a management position with the Brisbane City Council. Ironically, I was in charge of a fleet of heavy road sweeping vehicles even though I didn't have a heavy vehicle licence myself. Not knowing what I was going to do, I enrolled in a heavy rigid driving course with Watsons at Caboolture. I must admit, I hadn't anticipated being faced with a Roadranger transmission. Despite having driven manual gearbox vehicles for forty years, I found it surprisingly difficult. In fact, I was garbage!
    So with that in mind it was a testament to the teaching skills of the guys at Watsons that allowed me to pass my test with flying colours after only a few lessons.

    That's a great explanation thanks. I've just done my HR and found the RR transmission "challenging". This was one of the many "surprises" I found. I don't live in Brisbane, but if I did I would certainly look up this company based on this series of videos. Well done

    I drove an 18 speed paddle shift auto RR and the clutch brake was out of adjustment (which I was unaware of). It stranded me across a main road blocking both directions at night for about half an hour until it finally allowed selection of first gear. It frustrated the hell out of me not to mention the waiting traffic. I used to drive a 9 speed 3070 8 wheeler and with no clutch brake would depress the clutch and count to ten before engaging. Worked every time.

    I'm used to driving without a clutch brake as most of them (as I soon find out) are stuffed anyway. Only because when I was learning I was told when changing gears whilst moving, you only need to depress the clutch around halfway, NOT all the way... because going fully to the floor wears out the clutch break... (Whilst moving).
    BUT, when the box is 'cold' it's ok at a full stop. But when it's at running temp, nup! No clutch brake. Sometimes it's not uncommon to wait around 10-12 seconds for the gears to slow down until it's ok to quickly (but not forcefully) "click" it into position.
    But the rest of the time, yeah... it's fine if you don't let the foot off the clutch and just hold it in "The Dead Zone".
    Mostly now if I jump in a truck that has a stuffed clutch brake, when approaching a full stop, I'll pull up say in 2-3Lo and slightly engage the clutch for a second to make sure the gears are at least slowed down then (if loaded) I don't have to wait till forever because I've slowed the gears down crawling to the last part of the stop, and the gears slow with the slower approach speed.
    NO, I'm not riding the clutch.
    Whilst in the low range sitting, I'll quickly feel the clutch so that the gears slow. But if I'm sitting there in neutral and let the clutch out, I'm buggard. The trick is, don't use neutral and let out the clutch whilst at a short stop. If you have to get out to open a gate, well... either you wait OR kill the motor and restart with your foot ALREADY on the clutch. It's a pain!
    BUT I can never let the clutch come completely out, because if I do (in neutral)... it engages to box and speeds it up to the idle speed of the engine... and if you have no clutch brake, you'll be there forever waiting for the box to slow down. I hope this makes sense. But it works. ;)

    Does this (2nd method) work on cars as well??

    • @LS2MGB
      @LS2MGB 5 років тому +2

      Yes. Shouldn't need it on forward gears as the synchromesh rings should take care of it, but as there is no synchro on reverse this method works very well when trying to select reverse in a car. A truck Road Ranger gearbox doesn't not have synchromesh on any gears, often referred to as a "dog engagement" or "crash" gearbox as it has dog rings instead of synchromesh rings.

      @@LS2MGB keep in mind European and some Asian trucks in Australia have synchronized Transmissions the larger UD Quon Isuzu Giha and Hino 700 use American 18 speed transmissions.

    Why would a truck have such transmission in the first place? are trucks still being manufactured with Road Ranger today?

    • @shanemay3797
      @shanemay3797 2 роки тому

      Simple answer is that a fully manual gearbox can mostly always be made to work in an isolated environment if there is a problem with a gear by skipping that particular cog.

      Button on gear stick OR clutch to the floor (depends on your truck)
