So many people online and in life claim to have synesthesia but based on documented rates of synesthesia I think they're lying or exaggerating.
sid There is a difference between connections of the senses and true synesthesia and the bit you said about turning down music to be able to focus on driving more has more to do with focus than an intertwining of senses
sid And I don't think people are maliciously lying so much as exaggerating to make themselves sound more unique. They might not even be consciously aware of it. I don't stigmatize them for it.
Ned Gold I have synesthesia and when I was telling a friend of mine they were like " oh me too, colors make me feel things" and I'm like that's not what I meannnnnnnnnn
Karla Mal Yes. Both my mom and I have it. She can taste sounds and I have a lot of various things regarding color. I can see sound, feel sound, assign colors etc.
I have synaesthesia but only my family and a few friends know about it. So I'm not factored into these "documented rates." Which makes me think lots of people aren't counted. I know that in my high school, there was one other student with synaesthesia and one teacher. I also don't think they were counted because the teacher didn't seem to know she had synaesthesia (she complained of certain shapes and colours having an unbearable stench), and the other student with synaesthesia also didn't have a word for her "numbers-colours thing."

Music Kid: i think i have it because 4 is brown to me and monday is blue. If you want to know what is feels like lets take monday as an example. To me its a sad and reorganization time period witch i imagin to be blue. Example: 1 is gold. 10 is black. 7 is red . . .
Stiky Lizrd i colour code numbers too (I think 3 is red and 4 is blue) but it only happens sometimes
Edit: I think 7 is purple only sometimes though
Music Kid it is

I can smell too much. I could smell instantly when my roommate started a particular medication because of the sour tang that hung around her. I worked in an assistant living home (bad for hypersensitivity, to be true), and I could smell who was about to have a psychotic episode or go into a sadly short hospice stay. I'm embarrassed because I can smell who is on their period or if someone has cried recently. I could find people very quickly during hide and seek as a child, and I can't stand elevators because they smell like sooo many people. Anger, sadness, heartbreak, happiness, they all have a smell. It might sound cool, but it's all too overwhelming.
You are like my mother and i, except we see it as an aura around a person, but she can also smell it better, while i aee the color better. I can also taste and smell tears, which people say have no scent or taste.
Emalie Tison same
Whenever someone feels an emotion, or has something physically change their body or it's chemistry (like taking medication) our bodies release hormones as little signals to communicate and give orders to the rest of the body. You could, theoretically, use swabs on someone and test them to find out how much of certain hormones are there to try and gauge or predict their mood/stress level/fertility/etc. Emalie Tison here, has their sense of smell attuned and refined to smell the hormones people produce and give off. Everyone can actually smell them, and are subconsciously affected by them. Emalie on the other hand can actually make out what they are and put labels on and differentiate between them consciously. If you trained it and worked with doctors and patients, you could probably do a lot for the medical community, and help others recognize when they have the same ability and develope it further. You could work as a therapist and help people actually understand what they are feeling because "I know when someone smells sad or stressed." Lol. Or maybe you could even smell some diseases before they are diagnosable. That would be inspiring and pretty darn neat just as a person. You could probably get paid to smell stuff and save lives! Or maybe none of those things, but it's still unique and you, and pretty darn cool.
I know it sounds overwhelming, but IMO it's pretty cool, but it wouldn't be pleasant to smell some certain things at certain times...
Look, I’m not gonna be rude but... *farts*
Tetrachromacy sounds so incredible but annoying to have at the same time

Why did the teacher have to call the parents though 😂
Jordan Kotzev because it’s strange and it’s an early sign of being colorblind. Plus there is probably a deeper story behind it. For example the teacher could have asked her like, “Hey why did you color the leaves green?” And then she probably would have said, “What do you mean this is Green?” And that would of caused the teacher to wonder what’s wrong and call her parents. There you go lol.
Bumblebee yeah I would like to know if my child was showing signs of color blindness
Greganthony Smithen yes thank you
Everybody who thinks they have synesthesia in the comments, its most likely you don't. Just because you color code 1-10 that's pretty normal. I do to, so do a lot of my friends. But if you color code numbers a lot, (and by a lot i mean more than 1-30). You have it if you can agree with the things in the video. Stop trying to get attention, its not impressing anybody.

i have misophonia! it's like synesthesia, but it's a mixing of certain sounds and an intense negative emotional response

I have Synesthesia but it is mainly with my sense of touch, smell, and taste. When I open a bag of spicy chips, or am about to put something spicy in my mouth for the 1st time, my muscles in my jaw shiver and suddenly there is a kind of metal taste which goes away instantly..
If I'm going to eat something that is sour, my nose begins to tingle and I feel a sourness in my gut. As soon as the food touches my tounge both feelings go away.
If someone, or myself, rubs the bottom of my feet i can feel it in the opposite foot, but it also causes the feeling of capsaicin on my lips, like lightly burning, not painful or anything, but noticeable.
Uhhh pretty sure thats kinda a normal person thing
Marcus Rivera that’s normal
I have that with the chips thing.
When you interpret the music in color, it seems as though the colors move the same way written music, or English language is read: left to right. Is this true for people with synesthesia?
H. Squared not everyone who has synesthesia correlates music with colors. I think it's different for everyone. For me it's like every letter has a color and a number corresponding to it.
It just depends what they feel like.
You mostly start with the feeling the start gives, and just start somewhere.
It could move around, but it really depends how the music goes.
And it's not linear like a language.
its different for every person. For me, The colors are organized by the intensity of each note, the louder or more intense the note is, the larger it is and it is placed at the left. left to right, louder to softer.
Thanks for the input, Karla. I had a co-worker who correlated letters with colors, and I didn't even link the two.
Pete, I know that Matt said it is not like language, and I know it's unique for each person, but would you say there are similarities or "patterns" that people with synesthesia notice, or share with others with the same types of synesthesia?
I wonder if guy with no taste will try Carolina reaper
He would still react normally to the heat. Spicy things are felt not tasted.

Yes. Sorry for being weird :')
your not weird it is a condition and a type of synesthesia it is called ordinal linguistic personification i did my science project on it
I don't know what this has to do with anything, I just want to know if I'm not the only one. When I'm in class and were talking about dinosaurs or I'm watching Jurassic Park I'll get this weird smell, I can only describe it when I am smelling but when the scent is gonna so are the descriptions. If I'm bye my self and I think about dinosaurs to get the smell it won't come for a while, and then it comes for like 5 secs and disappears. The scent is the most strong when I think about or am shown a picture of a Velociraptor, it comes every time if a Velociraptor is involved, no matter the occasion. Like I'm smelling it right now as I'm writing about Velociraptors. Am I the only one?
Yes I think u are the only one
Yes you are
See, my sister and I both listen to songs or see things and then we associate them with certain things or feelings or times.
Really? I do that too
Thats a normal reaction, the painter visualizes songs as colors, and paints them, which s different to just associating songs with other things
Ya same, I will watch something and do something at the same time, and when I see that thing again I don’t remember what happened, but I feel the feeling (sorry if this makes no sense)

@@fayleurefayleure1495 it was a joke
i only recently discovered that synesthesia is a thing. when i did, i realized it wasn’t a normal thing everyone experienced. i have a type of synesthesia that makes letters and numbers colorful, as well as different sounds having distinct patterns, textures, and tastes. it’s all just a big mix of senses that i can’t really explain to anyone. i try to express myself creatively, and knowing i have synesthesia, i think it would be cool to make some projects solely based on my seemingly “weird” perceptions of the world.
It seems to be the most common one
To me numbers have relationships, feelings, and lives of their own. Am I ok?

The painter is absolutely terrific and the paintings are what I would consider abstract art and not some random splashes of colour. It allows me to interpret it however I want and I don't feel as though I have to take time and effort to understand it unlike the so called 'abstract art ' I see online or on Etsy. It speaks to me , telling me a story with the textures and the movement of colours all blended beautifully on canvas, like music.

@Great Big Story
I used to work with a woman whose story sounds exactly like yours! Crazy! I never noticed any odd eating habits. She just randomly told me about it, one day, and I was super shocked and blown away etc. Because she didn't act as so. She said she STILL didn't like the same kinds of veggies and whatnot, that she always used to. She also insists on eating as if she can still taste as well. Snacking on chocolate at work, etc. It was the craziest thing. Great video, BTW. It is super interesting and whatnot.
People with synesthesia, I can see and hear numbers very faintly, would that be it??
Could you alaborate on what that means?
Imagine one day that guy with no taste puts mustard on his cereal and his taste is back and he's just like ”WHAT THE FU-”
I just see words
I'm jealous of that person that can taste them :(
imagine the girl who tastes sounds is eating an Oreo for the first time and she says “wow! This tastes like a banjo!”
I don't have synesthesia but do something slightly similar. I've always associated months with colours.
January is wet sand but lighter
February is pink
March is pastel green
April can be either "It's about to rain" rain cloud grey or baby blue
May is light pink
June is vibrant light blue
July is night sky with a hue of midnight purple and a tiny bit of midnight blue
August is normal sand but a bit darker
September is like April but much lighter
October is neon orange
November is a grey-blue combo
December is very dark midnight blue that is so dark you're not sure if it's blue or black.
I can explain some but not others. I'll explain the one's I can now.
February has Valentine's Day and pink is stereotyped for love
March I'm not too sure but I think it's because it's the start of spring-ish
April idk why but I associate it with rain = rain cloud grey
June I think it's cos it's sunny then
September I don't really have much of a colour for but I thought about it and then I knew its colour. It's the start of the school year so it's a bit of a negative/kill-joy colour
October has Halloween which is associated with pumpkins which are orange.
So yeah. No one will see this but oh well.
idk if I had synesthesia or not, but I often recommend some songs to my friends by saying "listen to this, it's a really good song, it has a nice pale yellow vibes" then my friends just went "what?"
That's good so you can be vegan and get them vegetables and all nutrients without complaining but the rest is had
Monday taste like pancakes. Sunday taste like a sundae. Words that end with "Ple" like people, simple, or example, taste like sweet apples. College, collage, massage, taste like sausage. Words like much, bunch etc. Taste like turkey breast. Message tastes like peaches. Pre taste like juice. I have so many more words I can taste just ask.
Wait...I also see that personality with numbers thing, but it’s with letters.
