Every time I go back to my Safari after using fancier pens for a while I’m surprised by how nice it is all over again. Comfy, lightweight, nice writer.
I’m slowly getting my wife into fountain pens and she’s expressed a desire to collect a bunch of Safaris and Al-Stars. I’m excited! 😁

If you like wetter nibs, you should try out the Lamy cursive nib, the one with the Chinese word on the top. It's a much wetter nib out of the box. I find that out of the box, the gold nibs tend to write wetter than the steel ones, but out of the box, the cursive nib is generally wetter than any of the others. The narrow tined shape also changes the feel a lot, and it doesn't feel as stiff. Of course though, if any of these nibs are tuned by someone, the flow can be easily adjusted, but if we're talking out of the box, that usually how they seem to go. I have tons of the Lamy Safari and Nexx and a few ABC. A few of mine have custom grinds, and quite a few of them are also tuned and the flow adjusted

I can only agree, Safaris,Al-Stars etc are great.
Mine are all normal to wet, I can’t complain, I love using all different nibs and swab around.
Also the cap seals very well- over the summer school holidays the safari was is the pencil case for around 2 months. First week of school, wrote. No Parker, no Pelikan did.
I had 3 old Safaris for 25-30 years inked (yes , I know …) and they cleaned out so easily and write perfectly.
    So yay to the safaris!

I don't think I've heard anymore describe the Blackberry ink as having a green sheen, it's pretty firmly a bronze-y/gold sheen. A mega sheener at that. I love it.

Just seeing this now. Although I got the pink cliff, I had the same experience! I wrote elsewhere, on my "ten pen" list: "Lamy Safari Pink Cliff with DeAtramentis Document Fuchsia ink. I've been using this pen for the line work in my comics since I got it, and it's the first Lamy I've really enjoyed." 💕

I bought the pink cliff pen because I fell off a literal actual cliff last fall and what are the chances that Lamy named a pen and ink CLIFF soon after???
I love the idea of the safari more than I've ever loved an actual safari. I like the snap cap, the swappable nibs etc. I'm annoyed that I have to buy a converter or cartridges and I've had the same experience with dry nibs.
    COOL POINTS!
Sending good thoughts to you and Parker!

I bought both of the Safaris this year, I couldn’t resist the colours. I genuinely love them, I got one with a LH nib and one with an F nib. I've used the LH so much, I love it. I only own 8 pens, I'm still new to my fountain pen journey. I just need to get fountain pen friendly journals so I can use my pens more.

On discount, I got the Vista with a M nib a couple of years ago, and my 3rd fountain pen. Smooth, which puzzled me when others reported its reputation for scratchy nibs. Still one of favorite writers, so much so, I got a Vista Black, and put the Lamy Cursive nib on it.

I agree with your take on the Lamy Safari nibs. I have several of them and only one that I really like to write with: the SE Savanah Green. Where it flows nicely and writes well and smooth, the other ones I have are varying degrees of scratchy and unpleasant to write with.

Cool points but just wanted to say I just bought a charcoal Safari. Last time I got a safari was over 10 years ago I had gone through ( aka lost) 3 of them before moving on. Now it's back! I needed a pen for work (a commercial bindery) one that I knew I wouldn't be too sad to lose but still really enjoy and be functional. That's my safari story. Thanks for the vid.

Agree. I do not like Lamy’s at all. Even the 2000. 🫣. The nibs are just not for me. Too stiff. And feel scratchy. But I’m in the totally minority. So it must just be me!

Synchronicity that you found "the" Lamy Safari that you obviously truly enjoy! Happy for you. That Blackberry ink has crazy sheen. It's very nice looking.
I've never owned a Lamy Safari;but, when I saw the glowing anomaly that is the Lamy AL-Star aquatic I had to order one. Just hope that it writes as wet as your Violet Blackberry. I got a medium nib with the pen and spare broad/black nib just in case. I opted for Lamy "cliff" ink.
Keeping you and Parker in my prayers.

I collect the special edition colour safari's and usually the nibs are grand. Once or twice, I've had a scratch monster, but every now and then, the planets align, the angels sing and you get a nib that feels beyond amazing. Both new releases this year jad nibs like that and I am completely smitten with them. The colours are great too, dark and interesting, love the matching inks as well.

I have a new favorite fountain pen as well, the Asvine V126. It is better and cheaper than the Penbbs 456. I bought the frosted black version, but I found the grip section a bit on the slippery side. Fortunately, I got my sister a transparent teal so I tried her pen out and to me the transparent acrylic is grippier so I got myself the transparent brown V126 and I must say it is my new everyday writer.

Good to see things are slowly getting better. I like and use my Lamy Safari, AL, and LX frequently with no problems (for some reason I am liking my AL this week). I tend to use EF nibs most of the time, and F and M nibs regularly but with a little less frequency and they seem to work well, too. When I’ve had an issue (say hard starts or a dry writer) I take the nib off and clean it-usually there’s something clogging the feed-and it works fine afterwards. I have noticed some inks work better than others (Diamine for one). Also, if I want to make the pen a little wetter, I take out a piece Mylar, a brass shim, or feeler gauge, and run it through the slit once, test it, repeat until the desired wetness. If I louse up the nib, I just replace it-they’re not too expensive.

Cool points! I love my Lamy Safaris. The Derk Likac was my first fountain pen and I have several. All have been great writers but they do dry out if sitting around for a long time. I recommend trying a cursive job for one, just for fun. I write smallish and it doesn’t work for my small writing but it is a fun nib to play with for signing cards or writing something different.

Collecting all the cool points! Love my Vista! It was my first FP last December and it's smooth and flows so well. But now that I have more pens I don't use it as much. There's so many pens and inks to discover. I think I will splurge a little and get myself a nice pen for my Birthday this year - it's an even big -0 year this year. 🤫 It's leaning towards a beautiful Wancher but that could change, I am a Gemini after all. 😁 Keeping my fingers crossed for Parker. Give her a lot of hugs and cuddles from me. 😇🩷🙏🙌🇸🇪

Yay I got cool points! :D Glad to hear that Parker is getting better. Having a sick furbaby is always a huge worry.
My Lamy Safari was an EF and I hated how stiff and scratchy the nib was. Instead of toss it or buy a whole new pen, I bought three Lamy nibs, a broad, a 1.1 stub and a 1.5 stub, to swap them out and try different options (I didnt get F or M because I already have plenty of other pens with those nib sizes). Out of the three I like the 1.1 stub best but I haven't used it for anything other than lettering practise, which I don't do very often. It's still one of the least favourite pens in my collection - the only one I like less is the Jinhao 992.

  • @richardharker2775

Interesting. I've been using 2 Sailor Fude pens and a Platinum Preppy in fine. I don't particularly care about appearance as much as function and simple ability to change or recharge inks. This week I received a new Lamy Safari with an extra fine nib. I was expecting it to be a bit scratchy however I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it wrote on ordinary paper. For me I find the finger position they have crafted into the pen too close to the nib for my style of writing. I can easily adapt to it, I'm hoping. Either way it is what most people say about a Lamy Safari.

But I don’t want to give up on putting different inks in it! I thought to myself if she say LAMY Safari I’m going to crack up! I know a LOT of people really like the Pilot Metropolitan. But I just can't get past the sharp step-down at the grip section, the shortness of the grip section which causes me to end up with my thumb right on that step-down. It feels a bit short if not posted, but it doesn't post well. I haven't tried the Lamy yet, but triangular grips don't bother me, so I may give it a try.

I liked my yellow Safari when I tested it at Uwajimaya; and, decided to buy it. But,shortly after, the grip annoyed me too much. So, I purged it, and its converter, to someone who always wanted a fountain pen; but, never got around to it.

Cool points... Also...a super secret lamy nib hack. If you take a slim metal rod like a 3-4 mm drill bit and gently press the center of the nib down on it while holding the wings for a few seconds it will round out the nib a bit. You can always press it flatter and try again bbbbuuutttt if you get just a little lift in the center it may hard start if you haven't used your lamy in a could days but it can double, sometimes triple the flow... Make that 2 channel feed work for it's ink!

Worst pen I ever had the displeasure of owning. The one I received wouldn’t write. It felt like a rusty fishhook on sandpaper. I worked on the nib but it was never ok. All the groups explained that all of theirs were smooth as silk. I decided that maybe I was unlucky enough to get that 1 in 100 that wasn’t any good. So, I orders a new stock nib for $16 from Goulet and I swear to god, that nib was trash too. Fool me twice, shame on me. It was better than the first one but still all out of whack. After some time being irritated in the sink with ink all over my hands, I stabbed it into the counter until it was a bunch of busted up plastic and chucked it in the garbage.. and put Lamy, as a company, FAR off in my rear view mirror. Too much competition out there wanting my business. The next day I ordered two Esterbrooks and a Pelikan… but that’s a story for another time.

As to the LAMY proprietary cartridge and converter: I'd love a side by side, with measurements, between the LAMY and the Parker ones. I'm having suspicions that LAMY copied the Parker.
As for dry writing: probably why your preference is more modern. Vintage pens could be very dry writing, compared to today, and especially student pens like the Safari. Didn't want messes in classrooms. 😁

That magazine sounds terrible, biased and unethical. They should’ve paid a kill fee if they didn’t want to run it and shame on them for not wanting to run it because they didn’t like the honesty!
