Naturalistic Burrowing Scorpion Vivarium

- So many of you have been hounding me to do a setup for an insect, arachnid, etc. for a long time and it's finally here! Today we'll set up a naturalistic vivarium for my brother's Tri-Color Burrowing Scorpion. She's a beautiful animal and needed an enclosure to match and that's why I'm here.
If you are looking for a scorpion that's always going to be visible than this isn't the one for you. It will spend most of its time in its borrows. That said, it will come out to feed and soak in the water dish from time to time. Also, like I said, this is not a care guide. If this is an animal you want to keep, go and do your research! They're not difficult at all, but you want to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. These scorpions tend to be quite defensive/aggressive. I don't personally keep scorpions, but my bet for a beginner would be an Emperor Scorpion (that's what my bro started with). They're pretty timid and much more receptive to handling.
Anyways, maybe I'll keep some "bugs" of my own some day and do more setups like this. Also, my brother is trying to get more critters like this, so I'm sure he'll let me make more enclosure for him. If this is something you'd like to see again let me know down in the comments and I can definitely do so!
If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, leave them down in the comments! For additional content like this, photos of my terrariums and animals, projects sneak peeks and more, follow me on Instagram @SerpaDesign. / serpadesign

You should do a video where you make identical terrariums but don’t put springtails in one and then wait a month and show us the difference idk I just watched your lamp vid and got inspired
*L Ä M P*
yeah, I also have some doubts those insects are necessary, but I have never had any terrariums.
you wont see much of a difference
the difference is that - with springtails - you'll get less mold because they eat any rotting or degrading bio matter, like dead leaves, poop etc.
this makes it a healthy eco system like you'd find it in the wild
if you dont have springtails, it can still be a terrarium and it'll work, but it wont't be as easy to take care of as you will still have to do that manually
In a desert/arid set up they'll mostly be eating the scorpions droppings.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but she's not mine! I know many of you have been wanting to see this, so hopefully this will help you get your fix. 😂 Maybe I'll keep some "bugs" of my own some day and do more setups like this. That said, my brother is trying to get more critters like this, so I'm sure he'll let me make more enclosure for him. If this is something you'd like to see again let me know! ✌️
EDIT: Sorry that I didn't get more interaction shots of the scorpion in her home. As soon as she found a hole she went right in... never to be seen again! 🦂
Didnt you have millipedes?
Touché! Lol yeah I do I wasn't thinking about them.
yes please! more of these if you dont mind
Do you still have the millipedes? I had no idea you kept any creepy crawlies 😃. Definitely not my cup of tea, though. Eek!
If you do, I'll put in my vote for a cricket setup. Most people just keep them in boring egg-carton setups so its hard to find any ideas. I have a cricket terrarium myself, I just keep them for fun though, not to feed anything. Also, do you ever watch any of AntsCanada's videos? He's got some amazing terrariums!
This makes me miss keeping scorps myself. I used to have a colony of emperors, bark scorpions, and I had a dune scorpion (by far my fav).
@Daniel Cordero Pretty easily, they're communal so as long as you have an enclosure with enough structure in it, and places for them to dig, they should be fine. For two you could get away with a 10 gallon tank, go a few inches deep with the substrate, and put stuff like branches in it. They'll dig and climb all over the place. If you want to get more, say five or six of them, go up to a 20 gallon long at least.
You should do this as a service, I would gladly pay for one of your setups :)
Cool No one cares

So, your comment not only comes off as rude, but also ignorant.
@@themurrrr yes, that was kind of the point not gonna lie.
He does!
Yep I would buy 2 right now
You always make such beautiful enclosures, and make it look so effortless! I wish I had half the vision you possess. That being said, thank you for your videos and inspiration. You really are an artist and visionary to be admired!
Your videos are always so calming to watch , nice work !
Watching this version of Tanner and then watching the Tanner we have in 2024 is wild. He’s calmed down a bit into a much more relaxed and documentary kinda style. It’s honestly very relaxing and very easy to follow what he’s doing. Old Tanner was a different breed 😂 I would love to see a video of Tanner reacting to his older videos
I love the design. It compliments the color and natural habitat of the scorpion perfectly!
Your videos are inspiring as heck. I really want to get into make these but love the DIY aspect you provide. Great cheaper prices alternative! Thanks!
Your work never ceases to amaze me. This is a beautiful setup for an amazing creature. I hope one day in the future that I’ll be able to make beautiful vivariums just like you! Thank you for the inspiration!
Did you ever make a beautiful vivarium? Just curious because it is 2 years later!
Your videos have actually helped me get over my squeamishness about bugs! This year I've gone from freaking out and "disposing" of bugs I find in my house to catching them and taking them outside!
How are you doing something year later?
Beautiful home for a beautiful animal! Another great video. Always looking forward to the next :)
Your videos are always so awesome! Thanks for showing us this set up. 😍🦂
and here I am dumping some dirt into a glass box feeling like a conservationist.
this man's a go-get'er.
The difference between both setups were night and day! When the scorpion started to explore, you could almost feel his curiosity as he started checking it out. The last picture of him looked almost relaxed, like he was truly enjoying his new digs! Well done Tanner!
I originally came for the terrariums but nowadays whatever you put up I'm always watching. The amount of time and care you put into this stuff is inspiring! Keep up!
Cool setup. I'm almost done with my first vivarium build, just need to find some plants and springtails, thanks for the inspiration!
So beautiful! I personally will probably never keep a scorpion, but you make their home so beautiful I definitely enjoyed watching and gained an appreciation for scorpion care ☺️
Such a unique and inspiring form of art
The scorpion: no I don’t wanna!!!
2 seconds late
Okay I will :3
Disliked by accident, sorry!
OOORRRLLLAAA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oopsy poopsy1!1!1 I disliked your comment on purpose UwU, I’m sowwy for this small inconvenience that doesn’t affect anyone irl.
I feel like following this process a few tweaks and if the enclosure is larger this would also be perfect for a leopard gecko
I can truelly say u are one of the best informative setup guides on youtube, hands down, great stuff.
Ya he is goooood also my channel🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟
Very nice, Tanner! Beautiful setup!! 🦂🦂😁😁
She was such a cute scorpion and the set up came out very nice!
I love this video! And this channel! I’m planning to keep some more invertebrates soon and I will definitely use a similar design in a few enclosures!
And that was the last time he ever seen his scorpion..
That was great! Thanks for sharing!😊👍🏻
Very Very Beautiful.... Your brother must have been over joyed.. Super Creative..!!!! Thanks So Much
You have a real talent. Thanks for the idea
Looks great love the underground caves✌
I've been looking to do a similar build soon but for my hermit crabs! Will have to change up some stuff for them though but great ideas regardless! Awesome vid again!
blackmagedark are you on hermit crab association
Could never feed one But still think they are amazing. Great set up. Stunning lay out
Happy to see you working with some invertebrate setups (even if they're not yours, haha)! Always love seeing some big creepy crawlies~
Very cool! Little scorpio is a lucky guy!
Looks great! Great ideas and very creative :)
Thank you Tanner. I appreciate you.
love the video bro you gave me the perfect idea for my snake tank
Great job ! I have two Black Emperor scorpions named Onyx and Jet Black. I would like to make one similar for them. Thanks for sharing !
Can you upload videos of onyx and jet black on your channel?
BTW I like your channel a lot. It's very chill.
@@prithvithakur7950 ....thanks man !
@@prithvithakur7950 ....maybe in future. Onyx just had babies.
lol
Beautiful as always :)
Oh my god this is the best thing you’ve ever made
Great job Tanner ! I just got two baby Asian Forest scorplings. Think I will design a smaller version for mine when they get bigger. Cool !!!
Looking great!
Absolutely awesome so very creative.
Glad to see more natural materials.
Nice and unique work !
love your vids serpa
great looking setup!
Ha that looks fantastic man well done , you really have a skill ......
That looks great, mate. Cheers
This is so cool!
Wow this is a kickass enclosure, not sure I’ve ever seen anyone put so much effort into a scorpion enclosure
I think the covered burrows worked out better anyway, it can feel more hidden and safe, it was a cool idea though, great build!!
Being a hiker in the PNW, I *love* all the mossy setups. Just starting to get a few ideas, did a small fish bowl set up.. but looking for a good tank. I'm thinking for the back, taking a photo I have from hiking a forest to blow up for the backing. I have some photos from desert hiking around Moab that would be great for a setup like this though.
Such a cool design!!
looks awesome!!!
I watched all of your video it make my mind calm nice art
Love the way it looks but the fake plants kind of bother me
Tell Me I’m used to seeing him use live plants lol
@@umbrareptiles270 ikr
When you're keeping animals that need particularly dry conditions, it's always best to use fake plants for the animal's safety. Using live plants (even desert succulents) will cause dampness, especially when you water them. This is because (unlike in the wild) the water cannot escape into the atmosphere as readily, due to the constraints of the terrarium. I'm not exactly sure of the care for these scorpions but they may not appreciate the damp if they are a desert species. So the plants may look odd but at least it means he puts the wellbeing of the animal first and aesthetics second.
What @Rom said. Also it's a build for his brother, which may not be experienced with keeping plants and animals in the same vivarium. So I'm fine with the fake plants in this case.
Succulents do not do well in terrariums, so it makes sense he went for artificial.
I love your work bro
the scorpion really didn't want to move from it's corner. That's me getting out of bed lmao
That is great I bet the scorpion thought it was released into the world wonderful job
Wow your vids have changed over the years. I like to see your progress
That looks Exhibition/Zoo quality! Great work, man - always inspiring and enjoyable stuff.
looks better
The like was for you, but I gotta say I agree with you on what you was saying about hindsight... Overall not bad!
Beautifully scaped
Very nice!
One lucky scorpion! Looks good!
Awesome!
You can tell that he loves his new condo! :-)
this is amazing
That looks great.
Thanks for the tutorial tannner
Scorpion
"Smile and wave smile and wave"
Freaking beautiful lol good designing and scaping man
This is awesome! The only thing I think would be rad us if you could see in the burrow like you had planned and another cool thing would be if you could have added black lighting in the burrow so you can see the scorpion in the burrow a lot clearer.
work of art
I looooove your videos
Amazing
you did very well!
Awesome setup! I love watching your designs. Could you do a Leopard Gecko setup? I've been planning to use the excavator clay substrate for my geck but am unsure where to start. Keep up the good work!
If your brother still has this or another scorpion, I would love to see you do this again (maybe slightly larger) with what you know now! I've always wanted emperor scorpions in a coffee table...
You make gorgeous enclosures but I think, with burrowing animals, you have to let them make their own burrows. I was watching Clints reptiles about the Mantis Shrimp and the keeper from the Aquarium said that however you do their tanks, the mantis shrimp will tear it down and re do it the way it wants. I think its maybe the same with these scorpions, they are going to want to make their own burrows, no matter how nice you make it!
Such a happy scorpion
I'm going to use this type of design for my corn snakes new enclosure 👍🏽👍🏽
Nice presentation 👍
How do you clean setups like this
@SerpaDesign, if you ever re-do this set-up in the future. I suggest an egg-crate layer at the bottom with cocohusk on top. Allowing potential water to remain at the bottom, if any watering is done. Then clay the burrows but leave some viewing windows at the side. Then use a piece of cut paper to darken those chambers. Just so the pet owner can ensure the safety of the animal.
That's a really nice looking enclosure for a particularly beautiful scorpion! I'm just getting into scorpions, especially the parthenogenetic ones. I was wondering if you put any isopods in the enclosure, I didn't see any being added to the enclosure, and there are some species that actually do well in semi-arid environments. I was wondering what kind of springtail you used I've never had any luck using springtails in a semi arid environment as part of my clean up crew. Overall great video, thanks for sharing!
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!
that's a pretty cool vivarium
Hey there! I'm thinking about doing a bioactive vivarium for my southern alligator lizard! I really love the idea of the false bottom providing a sort of underground cave for him, and was wondering if you think this could work for something like a lizard? I'm mostly concerned with drainage, but also things like the springtails and isopods.
I don't see why not. Hides are great, but they don't occur in nature.
Why didn’t you just make little “windows” in the squirpions hidey-hole
Wow thanks for ur Genius an for sharing u r special
The top looks pretty tight for a scorpion!!!
Should totally do one for a desert type living terrarium. So I can follow along with my bearded dragon!!
I love scorpions!
Cool. Try and get some raw footage of her in the future running around even 1 min worth? Nice video
Great setup.
Almost like crayfish. Except they are more active and they dig their own holes and tunnels.
Super!
I feel like it would be really cool if, given that there was a colour that scorpions didn’t see or affected them less, there was a little dim light inside the burrow so you could observe them in there!
Nice!
