Sorry to burst your bubble, but she's not mine! I know many of you have been wanting to see this, so hopefully this will help you get your fix. 😂 Maybe I'll keep some "bugs" of my own some day and do more setups like this. That said, my brother is trying to get more critters like this, so I'm sure he'll let me make more enclosure for him. If this is something you'd like to see again let me know! ✌️ EDIT: Sorry that I didn't get more interaction shots of the scorpion in her home. As soon as she found a hole she went right in... never to be seen again! 🦂
If you do, I'll put in my vote for a cricket setup. Most people just keep them in boring egg-carton setups so its hard to find any ideas. I have a cricket terrarium myself, I just keep them for fun though, not to feed anything. Also, do you ever watch any of AntsCanada's videos? He's got some amazing terrariums!
@Daniel Cordero Pretty easily, they're communal so as long as you have an enclosure with enough structure in it, and places for them to dig, they should be fine. For two you could get away with a 10 gallon tank, go a few inches deep with the substrate, and put stuff like branches in it. They'll dig and climb all over the place. If you want to get more, say five or six of them, go up to a 20 gallon long at least.
You should do a video where you make identical terrariums but don’t put springtails in one and then wait a month and show us the difference idk I just watched your lamp vid and got inspired
you wont see much of a difference the difference is that - with springtails - you'll get less mold because they eat any rotting or degrading bio matter, like dead leaves, poop etc. this makes it a healthy eco system like you'd find it in the wild if you dont have springtails, it can still be a terrarium and it'll work, but it wont't be as easy to take care of as you will still have to do that manually
Your videos have actually helped me get over my squeamishness about bugs! This year I've gone from freaking out and "disposing" of bugs I find in my house to catching them and taking them outside!
The difference between both setups were night and day! When the scorpion started to explore, you could almost feel his curiosity as he started checking it out. The last picture of him looked almost relaxed, like he was truly enjoying his new digs! Well done Tanner!
You always make such beautiful enclosures, and make it look so effortless! I wish I had half the vision you possess. That being said, thank you for your videos and inspiration. You really are an artist and visionary to be admired!
Watching this version of Tanner and then watching the Tanner we have in 2024 is wild. He’s calmed down a bit into a much more relaxed and documentary kinda style. It’s honestly very relaxing and very easy to follow what he’s doing. Old Tanner was a different breed 😂 I would love to see a video of Tanner reacting to his older videos
man, you're so much better at making vivariums nowadays. this video really exemplifies a starting point of your journey in this channel and in your craftsmanship. 💜
I originally came for the terrariums but nowadays whatever you put up I'm always watching. The amount of time and care you put into this stuff is inspiring! Keep up!
You make gorgeous enclosures but I think, with burrowing animals, you have to let them make their own burrows. I was watching Clints reptiles about the Mantis Shrimp and the keeper from the Aquarium said that however you do their tanks, the mantis shrimp will tear it down and re do it the way it wants. I think its maybe the same with these scorpions, they are going to want to make their own burrows, no matter how nice you make it!
Your work never ceases to amaze me. This is a beautiful setup for an amazing creature. I hope one day in the future that I’ll be able to make beautiful vivariums just like you! Thank you for the inspiration!
OOORRRLLLAAA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oopsy poopsy1!1!1 I disliked your comment on purpose UwU, I’m sowwy for this small inconvenience that doesn’t affect anyone irl.
When you're keeping animals that need particularly dry conditions, it's always best to use fake plants for the animal's safety. Using live plants (even desert succulents) will cause dampness, especially when you water them. This is because (unlike in the wild) the water cannot escape into the atmosphere as readily, due to the constraints of the terrarium. I'm not exactly sure of the care for these scorpions but they may not appreciate the damp if they are a desert species. So the plants may look odd but at least it means he puts the wellbeing of the animal first and aesthetics second.
What @Rom said. Also it's a build for his brother, which may not be experienced with keeping plants and animals in the same vivarium. So I'm fine with the fake plants in this case.
So beautiful! I personally will probably never keep a scorpion, but you make their home so beautiful I definitely enjoyed watching and gained an appreciation for scorpion care ☺️
Being a hiker in the PNW, I *love* all the mossy setups. Just starting to get a few ideas, did a small fish bowl set up.. but looking for a good tank. I'm thinking for the back, taking a photo I have from hiking a forest to blow up for the backing. I have some photos from desert hiking around Moab that would be great for a setup like this though.
Are the springtails going to survive long-term in a set up like this? Everything is fake, and the substrate is probably going to be way too dry for them. This is definitely not a set up I'd add springtails (or isopods) to, but maybe I'm wrong. While the literal use of the word might be correct, I also wouldn't consider this bioactive. The only life is the scorpion and the added springtails, if they survive. Again, maybe I'm wrong.
The scorpion would most likely add a lot of waste due to the way it eats. My springtails live under my geckos water bowl, so they would find a way to keep moist and fed.
@SerpaDesign, if you ever re-do this set-up in the future. I suggest an egg-crate layer at the bottom with cocohusk on top. Allowing potential water to remain at the bottom, if any watering is done. Then clay the burrows but leave some viewing windows at the side. Then use a piece of cut paper to darken those chambers. Just so the pet owner can ensure the safety of the animal.
I've been looking to do a similar build soon but for my hermit crabs! Will have to change up some stuff for them though but great ideas regardless! Awesome vid again!
If your brother still has this or another scorpion, I would love to see you do this again (maybe slightly larger) with what you know now! I've always wanted emperor scorpions in a coffee table...
Hey there! I'm thinking about doing a bioactive vivarium for my southern alligator lizard! I really love the idea of the false bottom providing a sort of underground cave for him, and was wondering if you think this could work for something like a lizard? I'm mostly concerned with drainage, but also things like the springtails and isopods.
Tanner- how goes it ? Please tell your brother that he got an appreciative compliment on his scorpion. It looks very robust and healthy and is a good looking species
I feel like it would be really cool if, given that there was a colour that scorpions didn’t see or affected them less, there was a little dim light inside the burrow so you could observe them in there!
When you're cutting zip ties, use those black and red handled cutters. They let you get right to the clasp and don't leave a sharp edge like scissors or other cutters.
This is awesome! The only thing I think would be rad us if you could see in the burrow like you had planned and another cool thing would be if you could have added black lighting in the burrow so you can see the scorpion in the burrow a lot clearer.
While I love the tank, I wonder if you could have given the scorpion something more pleasant to walk on. Maybe I missed something but it looks like it will just be walking on glass now, which can't be ideal.
That's a really nice looking enclosure for a particularly beautiful scorpion! I'm just getting into scorpions, especially the parthenogenetic ones. I was wondering if you put any isopods in the enclosure, I didn't see any being added to the enclosure, and there are some species that actually do well in semi-arid environments. I was wondering what kind of springtail you used I've never had any luck using springtails in a semi arid environment as part of my clean up crew. Overall great video, thanks for sharing!
I really love the way you did this. Different from your normal tanks and very interesting. Would this sort of setup also work for a leopard gecko? Like would the clay be safe for one even? And if this was your personal tank, would you put live plants in? If so, which ones? I think air plants would work well in these sort of arid tanks
Oshie Boshie I’ll assume you meant research lol, and yea I did after but results are still sorta confusing and blurred between the lines. I know sand isn’t safe, that’s like the most basic fact to learn about leos, I was asking about the clay. Apparently it’s safe but can crumble and not safe for heat pads as it’s too absorptive of the heat. Turns out eco earth is the best bet for making a tank that isn’t completely flat for the ground scape.
To be honest, if I were your brother, I would have made the enclosure myself because I think there is something quite satisfying about designing your own animals enclosure, instead of receiving a pre-made enclosure... it's his decision I guess, and I'm sure you had fun making it but... idk.
I’m thinking about getting a scorpion and making a home like this for it, Could you possibly do a build for a emperor or Asian forest scorpion and have the burrows visible?
im currently making a 35 gallon paludarium for the vietnamese mossy frogs and i need some help transitioning into the water area. the egg crate method is to complexe for me and idk if i should just use great stuff and some slate stone or acrilik and great stuff. im going for a mossy jungle pool type of theme and the animal im getting is nocturnal so its going to be a dark setup with alot of bromeliads and vines. your comment and help would be highly appriciated.

Didnt you have millipedes?
Touché! Lol yeah I do I wasn't thinking about them.
yes please! more of these if you dont mind
Do you still have the millipedes? I had no idea you kept any creepy crawlies 😃. Definitely not my cup of tea, though. Eek!
This makes me miss keeping scorps myself. I used to have a colony of emperors, bark scorpions, and I had a dune scorpion (by far my fav).
@Daniel Cordero Pretty easily, they're communal so as long as you have an enclosure with enough structure in it, and places for them to dig, they should be fine. For two you could get away with a 10 gallon tank, go a few inches deep with the substrate, and put stuff like branches in it. They'll dig and climb all over the place. yeah, I also have some doubts those insects are necessary, but I have never had any terrariums.

In a desert/arid set up they'll mostly be eating the scorpions droppings.

I love the design. It compliments the color and natural habitat of the scorpion perfectly!
and here I am dumping some dirt into a glass box feeling like a conservationist.
this man's a go-get'er.

Very Very Beautiful.... Your brother must have been over joyed.. Super Creative..!!!! Thanks So Much
I feel like following this process a few tweaks and if the enclosure is larger this would also be perfect for a leopard gecko
The scorpion: no I don’t wanna!!!
2 seconds late
Okay I will :3

Succulents do not do well in terrariums, so it makes sense he went for artificial.
Such a unique and inspiring form of art
Cool setup. I'm almost done with my first vivarium build, just need to find some plants and springtails, thanks for the inspiration!
And that was the last time he ever seen his scorpion..
Beautiful home for a beautiful animal! Another great video. Always looking forward to the next :)
She was such a cute scorpion and the set up came out very nice!

springtails will find it even if you don't add them. every potted plant i have is loaded, naturally.
You can just spray the substrate, and they don’t need live plants to live
You can tell that he loves his new condo! :-)
the scorpion really didn't want to move from it's corner. That's me getting out of bed lmao

Would the springtails ever hurt the scorpion (or a tarantula) if it was shedding its exoskeleton?
Do they manage to walk fine on the glass floor underground?
