I FINALLY did a vivarium for a Jumping Spider! What do you think? If you're curious about any of the materials I used, then check out the video description. I have a bunch of helpful information in there and links. I gotta say, I'm really enjoying the spider! I'm very surprised at just how personable it is for such a small creature. Enjoy the video and have a great weekend! EDIT: See how this spider is doing now! ua-cam.com/video/r1Rab3DQOcM/v-deo.html
When I was in college there was a certain bench on campus that I used to sit at and draw all the time. A little jumping spider lived there, and without fail every time I was there it would come out and sit on my sketchbook and look up at me. It didn't bother it that I would continue to draw around it. It would just crawl around the page, maybe hop onto my leg or bag. It was like it knew I wasn't going to hurt it. I miss my little buddy.
They're so curious. My little one has a climber/slide in our backyard. It's a jumping spider magnet. If you hold your finger out they'll jump on you. Some of them will sit for a minute others will jump on and off as fast as they can. None of them usually just straight up run away. At the moment there are six TINY babies on it. I have to check every day and remove any adults I find to try and keep them from being eaten. The adults are really cool to watch, but I would rather give the babies a chance to live. I've watched one of the babies for over three weeks now. The new babies have only been there for a few days and are barely bigger than a dull pencil tip.
Just as an FYI, for a bold jumper you're going to want something a bit closer to the size of an Exo Terra Nano Tall (8x8x12) for long term keeping. Plenty of cross ventilation is going to be your best friend with keeping arachnids. Very cute little box, though. It's just that jumpers utilize a lot of space, and having something with more options for traversing the space, i.e. more anchor points like twigs and leaves, help for their enrichment, as they are quite smart little spoods.
I thought so too, this is good to know as I want to get one myself. Do you know if they require a full spectrum light? I’m assuming so as most animals need light to keep them healthy but I’m not sure
@@shadowbailey depends on your set-up man. I have about 20 spiders that all utilise natural light through a window then I have some abit further into the room that I set up lights for. Most spiders prefer the dark and things like jumping spiders, huntsman, wolf spiders use eyesight as a main way of hunting and they work alot better during night time.
Came here to say all that. I’m actually a little surprised Tanner didn’t look a little further into care sheet sites and learned to do it right the first time. Ventilation is important and that moss is gonna be dead in two weeks. Plus, these guys love flies and adding a fly to that enclosure is gonna be a pain in the butt.
I lived on the second floor and almost all the spiders I find in my appartment are jumping spiders. I've grown to like them. They look so smart, just how they move and position themselves, really makes you wonder haha!
Just want to say thank you. My son caught a little jumping spider recently and has been keeping it in a bug catcher outside. I'm terrified of spiders, but am finally caving and let him buy a small enclosure so he can keep it in the house. Enclosure gets here in 2 days and we immediately started looking for how we could decorate it.
Gotta say, I think this is the simplest, easiest build so far! I've kept various spiders throughout the years, one of which was a rare female Apache Jumping Spider, and I did about the same thing. Bought 2 containers; one similar to the first you showed and the other, a mini Exo Terra I believe it's called. Cleaned it, scaped it with mosses, twigs, a small vein plant and added her in. She was already very large and pretty old yet lived for another 6 months happy and healthy! The build now belongs to native isopods who reproduced the first month of having them :)
You could put a clear acrylic lip on the inside just like the substrate damm but on the top so that you won't destroy the web each time you open the door.
I really enjoy your stuff tanner. However this just seems too small of an enclosure. Maybe good for temporary or viewing but i feel like jumping spiders are so energetic and active they would need more than that. Would love to see an update of a bigger setup
nah it is a perfectly fine enclosure. any taller would be pointless, also note that a larger enclosure would mean more hiding places for the food, and it would make it more difficult for the spider to find food.
@@benlee7565 That's extremely incorrect. Jumping spiders will use any size you give them and the bigger the better, they're intelligent if not one of the intelligent invertebrates, one in Birmingham university has been taught to jump on command. They need a large spacious enclosure with lots of height and foliage. They are also one of the best hunters in the invertebrate world, they are more than capable to tracking down prey in their enclosures, thats whats their massive eyes are for. I'm a studying entomologist and also breeder of invertebrates , mainly jumping spiders and they all have a minimum of 30 x 30 x 45 bioactive exo terras and my females on average live over 3 years. They will use every single inch of their enclosure. too big of an enclosure is a old myth spread by collectors to justify poor husbandry.
@@shadowsexotics8827 Depends on what jumping spider, I too studied biology and breed invertebrates, and I personally think because of their adaptability they can fair well in a range of enclosure sizes, and just depends on your “keeping style” if it makes any sense. From most jumping spiders I’ve kept though, though my anecdotal observations many have the tendency to perch high and rarely utilise lower quarters of enclosures. They will use every inch, but will probably frequently use only certain parts of the enclosure. Especially if the female is entering brooding cycle, all they need is a few large meals and they’ll be busy brooding for a full month.
I know you're basically the king of making enclosure setups but if you wanna see a great invert youtuber id highly recommend the dark den, he always custom builds his enclosures just for tarantulas and a few others, love the one you made for the little jumper, she looks very happy in her new home

jumping spiders are my favorite of any spider, you literally can train one. they aren't hostile and are very curious lil guys. when I'm at college almost every day I see a new one and get to play with it. hopefully you keep that lil one and maybe some more (:
Spiders can be such fascinating beautiful creatures. I used to be so terrified of them until I started watching videos of their behaviors and natural instincts. They really are just little animals. Such a beautiful little home you've made for it.
Really nice, simple and clean build! Jumping spiders are my favorite spider not only because of their cute look but they can be kept as pets and even trained! If you ever see one on your windowsill, try to slowly put your hand out and see if it will jump on you, adorable!
Spiders are amazing. I used to be phobic of them but now I own some tarantulas myself. They amaze me now. I love watching them build their webs/hides and how they clean out their old molts and when they hunt for food and so on. I never could've guessed how interesting behaviours they have.
Your profound love of nature is a lesson for us all. You are mindful even in what others would consider minor details, like returning leftover moss to the outdoors, rather than throwing it in the trash. ✌
Jumping spiders are so unique, as they are so much more aware of their surroundings. I love how they swivel around to look directly at you. They are so cute. I found a large black and white one in my house, I would have kept her, but I didn't have anything to keep her in.
Get a magnifier to look at them as well, they are so amazing up close, like they have a little face and real personality's. My favourite spider by a mile.
I'm thinking thats a bit too small of an enclosure for a jumping. Something a little taller so it can move around and jump would probably be better for it
Notice in the time laps it is only active in the upper 1/4th of the enclosure? If he made the enclosure any taller it is pretty much pointless. Although a wider enclosure could give it more space to move, it is no means necessary to keep the spider nice and healthy.
@@benlee7565 I have seen bigger enclosures. Plus I am pretty sure the spider would rather be in the wild with all the ability to go wherever. I have to agree it should be bigger. I have had friends that have made a large one they like to jump and are often quite playful.
Mine (4) all have taller tanks with a vent on the top, it opens about an inch and a half down, this is important as most jumpers build their web in the top corners and opening some of those tanks would constantly disturb them.
I'm absolutely not a fan of spiders, but here in Florida we have these little black and white jumping spiders that I absolutely adore. The last time I made a terrarium in a gallon jar, it went through a pretty intense fungus fly infestation, and I really regret not throwing in one of those little jumping spiders that were watching eagerly from outside the jar on my patio table
cute little guy :) I've got an orb weaver living by the front door under the porch light so she gets all the bugs, sometimes 3 or 4 a night! its been really cool to see her grow and molt, but I'm glad shes outside lol
They are my favorite spiders. Soooo funny and for such a small spider they have huge personalities!! I play with the ones in my garden all the time!! Thanks for the inspiration Tanner. Maybe Ill keep one over winter and let it go in the spring. 🥰
I used to not really care for jumping spiders as they are a bit intimidating. Then I read that they actually are harmless to people and even prey on other spiders that are potentially harmful. So I'm hooked. Way-cool build.
I grew up in Florida and Phidippus Regius/Regal jumping spider have always been one of my favorite spiders. I used to have two Regals as pets awhile back.
Our home is also the home to quite a few spiders with several of them being of the jumping varsity. I couldn’t imagine caging them, until I watched the video.
Awesome. You sure have an eye. I'm the same way. I'm fascinated by wild spiders, but don't care to keep any. Until I found Peter, my jumping spider. He's so adorable. Thanks.
Aaaa please do some tarantula scapes, I love how you're starting to get into inverts, it would be awesome to see your take on some arboreal tarantulas, or even some fossorial ones!
where I live, the weather is very hot, so my room has its windows open 24/7 during summer, so I get lots of these, they catch mosquitoes, so I let them hang out inside... I used to always try to get them outside, but I've grown to love them. Great build !!
I had a female bold jumper that lived with my tokay gecko for ages. She was just too small or too much trouble to hunt. I loved watching her snooze in her little spider hammock and hunt the evil fruit flies and fungus gnats that show up from time to time. Such cool spiders.
This was a super cute little enclosure for a super cute jumping spider! I admire your work and how skilled you are at making these little ecosystems and terrariums, they're also very relaxing to watch
My orchid mantis baby died after 2 weeks, my chinese female (Avery) is now full grown and my baby african (still unnamed) just molted this morning, not sure why the orchid died, he was eating well and looked very lively. I think the orchid had a molting issue. 😔
Good job Tanner ! Love this spider vivarium. Glad you made one that we all can make instead of those huge and expensive ones. Greetings from Wolf of central Florida.
Love the "dramatic reenactment"! I used to keep a couple jumping spiders (very similar to P. audax; I had P. regius) and I work in a lab that studies and houses spiders, and they are such interesting little critters. Here's some fun facts that I hope will help you out in caring for your little guy! I think you actually have a male spider, since females tend to have rounder and bigger abdomens. They also appreciate more horizontal enclosures (as others have mentioned) so that they can jump around, and in a similar vein need a little more room to move around since they are active hunters and explorers (which others also mentioned in terms of upgrading him to a bigger enclosure). I also noticed that jumping spiders like to have a little hidey hole to escape to once in a while if they get startled or feel threatened, and will make a little web nest in it to sleep or hide, so it might be nice to include a small cave-like area in your build (maybe some rocks or those botanical pods you have). It's also good that you are housing him in a slightly humid vivarium, as they need some humidity to properly molt to grow -- if they get stuck in their molt they will sadly perish. I hope you can incorporate some of these tips for your little guy! Looking forward to the next build as always! :)
Cool build! I really like jumping spiders and we get to see them a lot in the garden at my hometown. I had even made a video on a jumping spider sometime back.
I keep thinking, if it is a jumping spider and if it is confined, it will hit it's head or body every time it jumps. Why keep the spider confined? Free the spider. 🕷
@Admiral Admirable actually, I had no conceptions about jumping spiders. I know nothing about them. Thank you for enlightening me on the subject. I don’t like any animals, fish or insects kept in a cage or aquarium. I did not search out this channel. It just showed up in my feed.
Wow you did a great job on this vivarium! Beautiful work! The moss was a great touch and I love the background paper and cork. The tree was elegant and simple. Making me want to make my own.
I'm glad more people are displaying inverts. You should try a roach tank. So many people keep their invert collections in boring shoe boxes but most work as display animals.
please make a bigger encloser for her this is too small. How much space does a jumping spider need? Space does matter, you want to give them ample space to move around like they do in their natural habitat. You can prepare a container of at least 1 cubic foot in size for each spider. 1 cubic foot is at least a 28 liters or 7-gallon tank.
The tank definitely should be larger but 7 gallons…. Come on now, i dont blame anyone for not giving a spider the size of a finger nail a 7 GALLON tank lmao😂💯
@@ptg6202 That's what my first google search said I am no expert but if I am capturing one in a box just by feel I would like to give it as much space as I could.
Looking into getting a jumping spider so I went back to this video. Man you’ve grown so much since here! So honored to have been along for the ride for so long
Jumping spiders don't actually need a bigger enclosure as they choose territories where they make their web and stick to the one spot. This is the same for a lot of spiders.
This is indeed too small for a jumper. They are known to utilize much larger spaces for hunting. Even for one who sets up in the corner, they will still utilize the space. These spiders have incredible eyesight and stunning cognitive skills, so navigating larger spaces is like their bread and butter.
It is just a true blessing for you to share your gift with the world and that I can be a part of it Tanner!! Thank you is not nearly enough for how much inspiration you give!
It’s amazing that you made enclosure for a jumping spider they are so adorable and so small it is crazy you made one because people do not consider them pets
This was awesome. No phobia triggered watching this little character. I really would enjoy setting up an enclosure and keeping one of these! Serpa Squad will hit 1mil this year!
The hubs and I have been creeping on your site for over a year…. The Jumping Spider setup is our favorite of all your projects. We had a jumping spider living on a houseplant on our kitchen island for months, such a personality on that little guy! Brought us right back. Thanks Tanner!
I like how that squiggly driftwood goes from the bottom all the way to the top, my spider would love that. They always spend time up top and a lot of my stuff is at the bottom so I need some more tall pieces of wood like that so there's somewhere to go up top too.
Started my first attempt at aquascaping a while ago without any real preparations. Just bought some stones, sands and silicones, modified a small plastic box as a housing for the filter and heater and gave it a go. After about 70% of the stones were glued I managed to crack a panel (small, cheap plastic tank). With some minor tweaks I can turn it into a spider vivarium now!
I FINALLY did a vivarium for a Jumping Spider! What do you think? If you're curious about any of the materials I used, then check out the video description. They are my favorite spiders. Soooo funny and for such a small spider they have huge personalities!! I play with the ones in my garden all the time!! Thanks for the inspiration Tanner. Maybe Ill keep one over winter and let it go in the spring. 🥰
The mantis bit was hilarious!
That terrarium looks beautiful but it's WAY to small for a jumping spider!
I thought that at the beginning too, but at the last only u get to see how small the spider is...
@@cineroustit But they like to move a lot.
Seconding this as someone who keeps a few dozen arachnids. 8x8x12 is a much better size for Phidippus audax.
Yeah the enclosure has no depth
Bold jumpers such as this need room to.. well, be bold! They like a bit more space to ping about
I used to not really care for jumping spiders as they are a bit intimidating. Then I read that they actually are harmless to people and even prey on other spiders that are potentially harmful. So I'm hooked. Way-cool build.
Loved how you walked through this simple yet elegant build for the spider. Keep it up, Tanner!
I grew up in Florida and Phidippus Regius/Regal jumping spider have always been one of my favorite spiders. I used to have two Regals as pets awhile back.
Our home is also the home
to quite a few spiders with
several of them being of
the jumping varsity.
I couldn’t imagine
caging them, until I
watched the video.
this reads like an epic poem
Dude I think your space bar is broken, it seems to send a line break instead of space every once in a while 😆
Awesome. You sure have an eye. I'm the same way. I'm fascinated by wild spiders, but don't care to keep any. Until I found Peter, my jumping spider. He's so adorable. Thanks.
Jumping spiders are adorable and very friendly. P.S. I needed this type of video (an easy to do build)
I didn't know Jumping Spiders could even catch prey that large wow! A very nice build I gotta say. She/He will feel right at home!
You’re way overdue for an animal room update. Would love to see how all of your latest projects are doing
I second this
I had a female bold jumper that lived with my tokay gecko for ages. She was just too small or too much trouble to hunt. I loved watching her snooze in her little spider hammock and hunt the evil fruit flies and fungus gnats that show up from time to time. Such cool spiders.
This was a super cute little enclosure for a super cute jumping spider! I admire your work and how skilled you are at making these little ecosystems and terrariums, they're also very relaxing to watch
the dramatic reenactment was so delightful omg
I would love to see you try an orchid mantis setup using smaller epifite orchids I just think you could do something amazing 👍
My orchid mantis baby died after 2 weeks, my chinese female (Avery) is now full grown and my baby african (still unnamed) just molted this morning, not sure why the orchid died, he was eating well and looked very lively. I think the orchid had a molting issue. 😔
So talented turned that tiny box into a beautiful world for an adorable little spider
Good job Tanner ! Love this spider vivarium. Glad you made one that we all can make instead of those huge and expensive ones. Greetings from Wolf of central Florida.
i miss my little jumping spider, found her on my bed one night and made up a vivarium for her. loved watching her eat, she was so adorable.
you’re so talented at doing all of these works, i really hope you keep up your relaxing videos. Good work man!
Hi bro 👋
Tanner your energy, creativity, and wholesomeness is wonderful. I hope you get to do what you love for the rest of your life, god bless 🙏🏻
I absolutely love the jumping spider, they have the cutest little face.
Cool build! I really like jumping spiders and we get to see them a lot in the garden at my hometown. I had even made a video on a jumping spider sometime back.
That jumping spider puppet was too cute.
I keep thinking, if it is a jumping spider and if it is confined, it will hit it's head or body every time it jumps. Why keep the spider confined? Free the spider. 🕷
When it jumps it will be aiming to land on the top or walls of the enclosure, they don’t collide randomly with things
@Admiral Admirable actually, I had no conceptions about jumping spiders. I know nothing about them. Thank you for enlightening me on the subject.
I don’t like any animals, fish or insects kept in a cage or aquarium. I did not search out this channel. It just showed up in my feed.
@@dianalynn6899 most animals kept in vivariums can live better than in the wild if done correctly
I am legit amazed at how you can take something so simple and make it SO beautiful!!!
12:15 for free?
Wow you did a great job on this vivarium! Beautiful work! The moss was a great touch and I love the background paper and cork. The tree was elegant and simple. Making me want to make my own.
Bad people: *kills spider*
Good people: *releases spider*
Tanner: *makes spider its own home*
This made a chuckle 😂
I love Jumping spider.
They're just so Smart and act almost like a Dog or a Child.
It's almost robotic as well
0:11 What is that thing, is there a video about it?
lol not yet. That's my Cat Eye Mantis.
@@SerpaDesign nice
Looking into getting a jumping spider so I went back to this video. Man you’ve grown so much since here! So honored to have been along for the ride for so long
This is a beautiful scape but it seems too small for the spider. We would happily watch another video of a bigger enclosure so I encourage an upgrade
Jumping spiders are so cute like puppies!
The insect containers seem small. I would just set it free.
Then go watch a video of someone not, putting one in something. Duh
Oh, how happy to have moss growing wild in your outdoor pond. 😁
It is just a true blessing for you to share your gift with the world and that I can be a part of it Tanner!! Thank you is not nearly enough for how much inspiration you give!
Jumping spiders are my second favourite spiders after tarantulas and they are very intelligent and cute spiders.
I like this one allot for its simplicity, feels like a desktop vivarium which is great.
It’s amazing that you made enclosure for a jumping spider they are so adorable and so small it is crazy you made one because people do not consider them pets
That intro was so charming!!!! From the mantis to the dramatic recreation, super duper charming!
This was awesome. No phobia triggered watching this little character. I really would enjoy setting up an enclosure and keeping one of these!
Serpa Squad will hit 1mil this year!
He's definitely going to hit 1 Million! I'm almost at 1K.... :)
The most casual build on the channel
With some minor tweaks I can turn it into a spider vivarium now!
awe that lil guy is SO adorable. got a nice new home and gormet meals
You really have elevated your video game congratulations the quality is awesome.
I would love a stream of just watching this little guy or some of your other critters just going about their day.
I love these things! They are absurdly adorable for an arachnid lol
