The problem is that Robert Preston totally defined that role. He is that guy. Nobody else is even close. I've rarely seen a role that was so defined by one person that it's absolutely pointless to even try to remake it.

I'm glad they did the song uncut (unlike the Preston version) but bringing in the orchestra halfway through ruins the effect. The WHOLE POINT of the number is to make music out of idle chatter.

You're right! I was introduced to this version first, then watched the original on my own a few years later. I can understand being a purist and wanting to preserve something as dynamic as the inimitable performance of Robert Preston, but for me, I just enjoy this one sooo much more. The supporting cast, the costumes, choreography, and tempo of the remake buoy up Matthew Broderick, as opposed to one performer carrying the entire show in the original. Shirley Jones was also very good, but I just enjoy Kristin's singing sooo much more. One thing about the original that feels less than the remake is the casting of Buddy Hackett as Marcellus; I always felt like that guy was supposed to be a right-hand man, a lieutenant of sorts; kinda like Will Scarlett to Robin Hood. The Marce in the remake fit that role much better. The original is still the superior film, when taken based solely on the merit of the title character, however, I own the dvd of this version and can honestly say that I made the better choice for myself. I say see both versions and decide for yourself which one does it better for you. Robert Preston is THE MAN, but it's the remake all the way for me as the more satisfying film. Thanks for posting!

Personally I found the extra verses they added to Rock Island to be very tired and overall detrimental to the natural energy of the song. Plus having the same salesman that adds the "no it ain't but he doesn't know the territory." contribute a verse sends a mixed message that is entirely unnecessary (does that character think things have changed for salesmen like the rest or not?).
However, the way the salesmen race after Hill once they realize he's the source of their recent miseries only to have him smirk and tip his hat to them at the platform? Wonderful addition.

Over on one of the original ones (from 1962), somebody commented that this song sets the tone for the entire movie. I've not seen the Broderick version, but a minute and a half into this clip, I can see I haven't missed anything.

I agree, there's not enough energy in this version compared to the old version and even some high school plays.

I love this version because the guy playing Charlie has a strong resemblance to a good friend of mine.

I grew up with the Robert Preston version, and he was the original Harold Hill on Broadway. Nobody else can fill his shoes in this role, in my opinion.

I must agree with my fellow you-tubers. Robert Preston is the one and only quintessential Music Man. Nothing against Matthew--he's a great actor, but only RP can be the Music Man.

Yep, that was Patric McKenna from the Red Green show. He has done a tone of stuff on the Sci-Fi channel as well, like stargate
