    Also hoping that you will show a quick vid about Getting the Cover off > Putting it Back On. This is exactly the style I want, all for the same reasons you mention. Grateful that someone took the time with this model. It's the only detail on the internet I could find. Also an XTerra owner so super appreciative. Cheers

      That's awesome! Stay tuned for more content on the tent and the Xterra for sure. I've got the tent off the truck right now because I'm building my own custom unistrut based roof rack so that I can mount the RTT, my awning, my limb risers, and my traction boards back up to the roof. So, as soon as I get it back on, I'll be doing a walk around of that. I'd be happy to take a video of taking the cover off and putting it back on too!

    Hey Fletch! I'm actually looking at buying this tent right now for my sxs, or possibly to mount to my trailer. I've had my ARB rtt for four years now, and as you mentioned, the setup is definitely much more. After some 250-300 nights spent in that tent, it has wore me down and I am simply not as enthusiastic about setting up and taking down the tent on extended trips where I am moving camp daily. I stumbled upon one of these tents in new condition on Facebook marketplace for a decent price, so I'm just going to snap it up and try my luck with it. I can't wait to pick it up next week!

    New to your channel, found you when looking at reviews for this tent. Been really struggling with going hardshell or not, but biggest complaint with all of the soft shells was setup, then I found this one and holy heck is easy. Pretty sure I'm ordering one Friday, just want to make sure the one hardshell I'm looking at doesn't do some crazy $300 off it something lol. Also, wanted to mention diesel heaters if you haven't looked into them you should. I winter camp too and I hate propane, open flame, etc, I found these diesel heaters and what a game changer. Hot dry heat, zero risk of fire or carbon monoxide. I'm actually in my ice shelter right now and it's a balmy 70 with a door cracked open and vents open and it's on next to the lowest setting. Very efficient too. I'm mounting the RTT to my kayak trailer and will figure out a way to mount the heater as well, anyhow thanks for a great video you all but made up my mind depending on BF deals lol. Btw, this is only 850 right now! Went down 50 since yesterday

      Hey Doug! Welcome to the channel! Glad to have ya. I do really love this tent. It’s kind of the best of both worlds. The cover is a little tricky to get on and off the first few times but once you’re used to it, it’s not bad. That’s awesome that it’s only $850! I have definitely been pondering a diesel heater in a box build and it’ll probably be something I work on this winter. If you don’t mind, if you buy it, click through that link in the description. @@AllThingsOverlanding I absolutely will click the link, I figure someone might as well get something out of it lol and you did the best video on this tent. Def look into the diesel heat. I used it last night kept my tent very toasty warm I was running a 14 amp hour battery and I got about 15 hours of runtime on it so I definitely recommend a larger battery lol but I ran it overnight off of my rock piles 350 watt and it worked with no problem 8 9 hours I still had juice left. Very clean dry air actually if anything a little too dry I think I'm going to put a bowl of water in front of the exhaust next time lol but if you want any more info DM me not that there isn't a million videos online about it but I definitely have learned a lot over the last month and I've used it three times now and nothing but good

      @@AllThingsOverlanding FYI, order placed from your link this morning!!! Can't wait to get out and do some winter camping in this beast! Solar panels on order as well. I was waiting to see if Renogy did something crazy for BF, but they didn't, lol, so I went ahead and ordered the Rockpals 100w that goes with my Solar Generator 350w from them. I think after the first of the year I'll get the 200w system with 200ah batteries that I plan on. But this way I have the extra 100w to move around portable. The tent is going on a kayak trailer that I had modified to have a full rack, so I'm leaning towards putting the solar on my Rav4 roof, mounted on a roof basket, has an air dam, which should help with the height of the tent as well. Who knows, maybe I'll throw a video up once I get things assembled. I used to do drone videos and I know the edit time for even a simple quick video, so NO way I want to do what you all do, I know the time invested lol. Thanks again for a great review!

    It looks great. My only concern is the design of the rain fly at the driver side. Ideally, the driver side is the best side facing strong wind and rain. The opening is not well covered by the rain fly and water may entering from the zipper of the window. Would very like a review about your raining day camping experience. Thanks so much.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 роки тому

      Yep and that's valid. You definitely do lose the ability to have that window open if it was raining a decent amount, which is a down side of the design. I haven't had it in an all out downpour yet, but I have had it open in pretty decent strength rain before and have never had any leaks. The zipper runs around the outside edge of the window which is almost under the rain fly so I think it would take a lot of wind and rain to even really contact the zipper to cause a problem.
      I'll update you for sure though once I've experienced weather like that if there are any problems! I've spent about 18 nights in it so far and it's been great and it's holding up really well. Still love it.

      @@shawnlindsey_ For sure. I'm going camping for 2 nights this weekend in it again which will put me at about 10-12 nights in it in the last month or two. The only downside is getting the cover on and off. Compared to a Smittybilt style tent though, it's way easier overall. The only thing I would consider over it would be a hard shell pop up style, but I chose this because it wasn't $2-3K, :D. I went to a 5 day overlanding retreat a month ago and got tons of compliments on it and people were amazed at how fast and easy it went up and came down. I really love it.
      Also, when doing the cover, just watch the aluminum hinges as you can tear the cover if you're yanking on it. Ask me how I know, :D. Here's a link to a video where I describe how I did that and how I repaired it. It was my own fault, not the tent's, but just something to be aware of: ua-cam.com/video/1fgS1glblmU/v-deo.html

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, great point. You are absolutely right that’s the worst part. Here is my feedback on the cover and “downsides” of the tent.
      I've used it for about 8 or 9 nights so far in the last month (just got back from a 5 day trip to the upper peninsula of Michigan) and overall, I really like it. Here are a few of the downsides:
      1. Getting the cover on takes some practice. I was super frustrated at first but after about the 4th or 5th time, I got a lot better and it wasn't nearly as annoying, but it's still not as easy as a hard shell (but also like a third or less of the price of one).
      2. Be careful around the aluminum hinges when putting the cover on. I wasn't paying attention and I ripped the cover (putting together a video of that now showing how I fixed it).
      3. It's 48" wide by about 7' long so if you're going to sleep more than 2 adults, this probably isn't a good option.
      Otherwise, I love this thing and have gotten a lot of compliments on it for how nice it looks and how easy and quick it is to set up. I mostly go solo, so it's fantastic for me! Hope that helps.

      Ha! I'm a talker. So, I do love this tent. I will say that a hard shell is going to be fairly significantly easier to pack down, so it really depends on the value of that versus the cost of the tent. For the money, I still contend this is one of the best tents you can buy. However, if you go quite a bit, you may get tired of messing with the cover eventually. But for half or a third of the price of a hard shell tent, you have to weigh it out and decide what makes the most sense for you.

      Hey Howard! I actually keep mine on full time and it's too tall to fit in my garage so it's outside all the time. After a few months now, no leaks and no problems. I've used it about 15 nights or so (had a long 5 day consecutive overlanding expo in there) and it's been great.
      I just used 6 u-bolts to attach it to my roof rack, but if you have a thin rack or some sort of aftermarket roof rack, then it comes with a really nice adjustable aluminum t-channel mounting system and all the hardware you need to attach it to your rack. Xterras are just weird and have huge cross members that weren't compatible. I just got done building my own uni-strut roof rack for about $100 which I'll be dropping a video on soon that will show how I solved that problem, but it's a great tent and easy to install.

    Love your review! Regarding Weight- you said it feels like 100 lbs but Mfr specs say 159- that's a pretty big difference- any way you can confirm what the weight is? That's the only concern we have as we want to be able to remove it when we're not on a trip and are considering the Gofast, but this one looks more comfortable. How easy would it be to take it on/off the rack? Thx

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 роки тому

      Hi Lisa, thanks! That's a great question. You know, weight is a weird thing where it's hard to say from "feel." I had a neighbor kid help me throw it up on the roof and it felt pretty light, but I was comparing it to a DIY roof top tent that I had built out of wood, so it probably was lighter than that, but if I had to defer, I would say to go high and use the manufacturer's specs. It's strapped to my roof now so I don't really have a way to get it off and weigh it independently. Sorry!
      I was really looking at the Go Fast Ultralight too, but there's a long wait list and with mattress, it's at least about $1500 so I went with this one.
      I think removing it from the rack would all come down to how you mount it. If you use the stock mounting points that come with it, it's essentially 8 bolts (2 per attachment point times 4). In my case, the Xterra is weird so I built my own DIY roof rack out of unistrut to mount to my stock rack. I leave mine on all the time. There are some quick release kits and that would determine how easy it is to remove. Again, with myself an a young kid from across the street, we were able to fairly easily get it on the roof, but if you were going to do it a lot, it might make sense to create some sort of winch/pulley system to drive under, undo the quick releases, and lift it off.
      Sorry for the book, but hopefully that helps!

    What an awesome, thorough review. I actually bought this tent before I even knew about your channel, otherwise I would have clicked through your link. It just arrived today, and I'm excited to get it setup. I'll be using it on a 2013 Lexus GX460 on the stock roof rack to start with, and then on a Victory 4x4 rack after that. I read in the reviews on Amazon that the two black straps are somewhat susceptible to breaking. Since you've been using it more, have you found that to be the case? Also, how long in total did it take you to mount it to your roof rack? Wondering if, once it's up there, it sort of becomes a permanent fixture, or is it reasonable to take it down from time to time if you ever want/need to? How has the cover held up in the rain? Any issues you've come across in the meantime? Such a great value for the money.

      Hey Jon! Thanks so much man! Those GX460’s are awesome. Super jealous, :D.
      Great questions and here are my answers:
      1. Black straps-I’ve had it for about 3 months and used it about 15 nights and so far so good. No problems at all with the straps. I guess worst case, if they did break, you could attach a bungy cord to use to pull the tent up and then use the provided pins to hold the tent up. But, again, I’ve used it a decent amount and no signs of anything breaking or failing.
      2. Mounting-The Xterra has a weird roof rack that has huge cross members that the provided t-channel and bolt system wouldn’t work with. So, I used 6 large u-bolts to attach it. It works fine, but they were a pain to get on and to tighten all the way up. They would definitely not be easy to frequently attach and remove. It probably took me about an hour to an hour and a half to install the first time. I leave it on full time so I’m ready to go whenever. Plus, my truck won’t fit into the garage so I don’t mess with it. If you did it right and spent the money to get some sort of quick release system, it wouldn’t be too bad. It’s a really light tent.
      3. Rain-It’s held up great and I’ve had no issues with leaks or water of any kind in it so far. I did rip it because I’m an idiot and it is a little difficult to get the top on and off. I did make a video showing how I repaired it if it ever happens to you. Here’s a link: ua-cam.com/video/1fgS1glblmU/v-deo.html.
      4. No other issues. The main recommendation I would make is to get an additional mattress to really make it comfy. Here’s the one I got and it’s awesome (and it was cheap): amzn.to/3dBOEh7
      I agree it’s a great value for the money. I love mine so far. Good luck with yours and if you run into any issues or have questions, just hit me up!

    Nice review of the tent. I'm trying to decide model of tent to buy. It's either going to be this one or the FSR 63 High Country. I'm 6'5" and I'm afraid i might not have enough room in this tent if my wife comes with.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 роки тому +1

      I'm 6'2" and it's plenty long (probably 6-8" of extra space at my feet). It's said to be 48" across but I think that may be outside width. My wife and I have slept in it and we had plenty of room. I've also slept myself and my 7 and 10 year old in the tent and that was a little tight, but it worked. I think for 2 people it's just about right. However, that doesn't leave a lot of room for heaters or much stuff, but that hasn't been a problem for us.

    This is the RTT I’ve been eyeing to mount on top of my Jeep JKU. Price is right and setup looks so fast. Question. How tall is it when it’s folded down?

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  3 роки тому +1

    Great video and we’re interested in possibly getting a RTT like this one. I have a question though.. how much room do you have sitting up in it? Is there a good amount of head space? I’m 5’11” and my wife is 5’6”. Thanks!

      Hi! I'm 6'2" and I can easily sit up in it without my head hitting the ceiling. It's pretty tall. I have changed clothes in it and I obviously can't stand up in it, but with it being 7' long and 4' across, it's pretty easy to do it crouching or sitting.

      So, I sold it to someone else who is still running it to this day. The only reason was I go mostly in the winter and the cover, especially when your hands are freezing, is tricky to get back on after a night of camping. I still think it's a great tent for the money!

      Two, yes. The wife and I have used it before and it was perfect. Also, I can fit my 7 and 10 year olds in it with just me. As for comfort, you’ll want to get some sort of a mattress or mattress topper to make it really comfortable. Overall though, it’s a great deal for the price!

      Hey Carlos, technically it's all one piece. I think if you were motivated and/or dedicated to creating a solution, you could probably remove it and then use hooks or something to allow for it to be attached or removed. I like that it's attached so there's less work when putting it up or down. Let me know if you have any other questions!
