Weirdly, I've rung on the bells at all the churches you mention in the video. My most memorable "tall thing in London" experience is also campanology related: standing in the cupola at the top of the Queen's Tower at Imperial College whilst the bells are ringing is quite an experience, as the tower sways around quite a lot - it having had the rest of the old Imperial Institute demolished around it.

    • @Robslondon

      Great comment!
Funnily enough, I had the Imperial College site in my last video in case you missed it ;-) (Was the site where the Indian nationalist Madan Lal Dinghra committed an assassination in the early 20th century). Didn't realise it swayed like that! Scary!

Thank you Rob for another fascinating list of London landmarks. The Telecom Tower looks modern even today and probably will for decades to come if it doesn't need to be rebuilt. I was surprised that the London Eye didn't make the list as it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world for several years and as your logo shows, is now as integral to the London skyline as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris.

@@Robslondon Almost 50 years ago I ran up the steps at Belsize Park tube, one stop south from Hampstead, to work out how many watts my body could generate. It worked out at around 70 watts if I recall well. The reason I did it was because a pupil at the school I worked at asked me how many watts the human body can generate. I was no athlete 🙂

Great video again Rob. A few years ago I attended a roof walk above St Mary's church, Harrow-on-the-Hill - a place I know you will be familiar with. I was told that, before the Shard was "topped out", if you climbed to the top of its spire, you would be at the highest point in the London basin. Not sure if that's true then or now - but you certainly do get a tremendous view from up there, including Wembley Stadium in the foreground of course. 😀 All the best.

Hi Rob, absolute stunner of a video. Im glad you took one for the team as i couldnt ever go up glass structures that high my little guys were pulling up tight just watching it on screen 😮 I just cant take heights. I wonder if the GPO tower and revolving restaurant in Liverpool ever figured in those 'secret lists' in case of nuclear attack. Loved that nurse autonomon too. In Leeds there had been an autonomon display in the Merrion Centre when it was first built in the 60/70's. It was eventually put in a case on display as i think it was vandalised regularly. I'll treat you to a kofi to help refresh your stair climbing skills for our pleasures. Cheers DougT

I think the likelihood that the gardens will have the same public access as they did under Richard Branson, is pretty slim. The current massive refurbishment plans to take the old Sun Pavilion back to how it looked in 1938 but, with a modern elegance. And then make it a private members club for the rich. Even the restaurant has gone and will be replaced by 3 other more intimate dining rooms.

Just a brilliant and awesome episode, Rob! Maybe my favorite one ever! I may be biased as I lived in Hoxton and the George and Vulture was my closest pub, but honestly, I really enjoyed all the quirky fun things here and loved that it gave me a bunch of new things to seek out when I am back in London next! I had heard that they called themselves the tallest pub in London, but I never experienced more than the ground floor. Can you actually go up to the upper floors? Also, can you talk about how there is a very famous restaurant in The City called the George and Vulture and if there are any connections between these? Thanks so much fro all your hard work. You bring London back to me so acutely in videos like this and I treasure them immensely!

17:09 Non-Londoners may not be aware that the "stairs equivalent to a 15-storey building" thing is a bit of a running gag on the tube. There are several stations which have signs making this claim, even though they have wildly different numbers of steps. It seems that the underground settled on that number at some point in the past, and reused it at various stations to discourage people from taking the stairs, regardless of how inaccurate it was.

I was lucky enough to go up the Post Office Tower, back in the 1960s as part of a school trip. Opened officially by Tony Benn, I think. Famously it appeared in an episode of The Goodies, a BBC comedy series that aired in the 1970s. The programme featured Tim Brooke-Taylor, Bill Oddie and Graham Garden. The episode in question was called ‘King Kitten’ and features a mutant cat called Twinkle that destroys both The Post Office Tower and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Thank you Rob for this latest edition of what we who live in London should know about the place.
Yet because of the very reason of living in the city, are almost guaranteed _not_ to know!
One thing please, when you're converting to imperial, please avoid the trap that the majority of metric babies fall into ~ namely "X point seven feet."
To avoid confusion, it's easier to say 'X feet eight inches' otherwise we can't be sure if it truly is X.7 or X feet 7 inches.

I thought this was a great video but there were a couple of times I did a double take.
The first one was the tallest pub as I think there are a number of hostelries built into the ground floor of office blocks. Some of them surely must be taller.
The other one was the tallest staircase on the underground being at Hampstead. There is a taller "emergency staircase" at the unfinished "North End" aka "Bull & Bush" station. This part-built station is between Hampstead and Golders Green and is even deeper than Hampstead. One of the few things that were completed was the spiral staircase. If a tube train broke down nearby one option would be to evacuate using these stairs! Otherwise they are mostly off-limits to the public.
I understood the Geoff Marshall reference so I assume it is 15 storeys tall as well:
