    I hate when they rearrange the stores!

  • @SylviaRustyFae
    @SylviaRustyFae 18 днів тому +29

    Rearrangin the stores has ZERO to do with "customer ease" and everythin to do with sellin more stuff. They move things around so that you have to search for the items you want and you are now more likely to impulse shop along the way to your items; bcuz you are seein new things and they hope theyll catch your eye
    Stores rearrange their entire shelves at least a few times a ye spec bcuz it makes them more money and they can see a sizeable boost each time they rearrange things

      This. Marketing and impulse buying.

    • @SylviaRustyFae
      @SylviaRustyFae 18 днів тому

      @@lisa_wistfulone7957 Oh yeah, i didnt even think to mention the other reason; theyll also move things around based on how much diff brands are incentivisin them to place things in diff places
      This is why generics are almost always near the top or bottom of shelves, whereas namebrand products are at the middle, at eye lvl; bcuz they either give a discounted price to the store or just pay a lump sum or otherwise work out a deal based on where their product is displayed
      And ofc those deals are always bein renegotiated constantly. That whole other marketin side of the equation on top of it just boostin sales; its about shufflin things around based on the money that they make for simply placin things in diff places... Even before anyone buys anythin

    • @SylviaRustyFae
      @SylviaRustyFae 18 днів тому

      @@lisa_wistfulone7957 Prior to prty much the 20th century, grocers were a place where you cud go and hand them a list of what you wanted; and theyd just pick from whats available and hand it back to you at some later time, possibly even deliver it for a small fee
      No brands, no marketin to the consumers; just individual grocers makin individual deals to get the best goods at the best deals they can, to attract customers
      Then Piggly Wiggly came and changed everything. And yes, the first grocery store, at least in USA, to change to let the customers shop around instd of havin to wait on the grocer to get things to them; was called Piggly Wiggly.
      And that, that ruined the grocery shoppin exp by allowin brands into the equation; and allow them to target consumers directly, who know less than the individual grocers do... And who can be more easily influenced and manipulated with trickery like item placement and movin things around

      Need more people like me who walk out with LESS stuff after a rearrange and go get the missing items from another store. Technically I guess I could look for them, and if it's a quiet time of the day and I've got enough spoons I just might, but usually I just get overwhelmed and need to get out of there sooner. And don't even suggest asking an employee 😂

    They rearrange in order to get people to buy more- apparently sales go up, because people have to search for what they need and then impulse buy other stuff thst they come across, where as if you know where everything is, you go straight to it and don't impulse buy as much.
    It is SO effing ANNOYING!!!

    • @durabelle
      @durabelle 17 днів тому +3

      It's the worst when they're in the middle of a big rearrange and the aisles still have wrong signs too, so you'll literally have no idea where to look for stuff that's not where it claims to be. When that happens I often swap for another store for a while, and by the time I come back they hopefully have their system together again and I can treat it like any new store.

    • @shootaman2
      @shootaman2 16 днів тому

      That's not true. They rearrange aisles seasonally to keep the things people are more likely to buy at the front. If certain things are more popular at certain times of year, those things will be easier to find at that time of year.

  • @jimwilliams3816
    @jimwilliams3816 18 днів тому +10

    Perfect timing! A couple weeks ago my supermarket posted a sign about how, to serve me better, they were making changes to the store. They are moving everything all over the place, and it’s only been about three years since they did it before. I operate on the same mental map, buying basically the same items by location, and that route is how my crap working memory is able to “remember” most items. The software and computers I use like to do the same thing, and that’s one reason that I’m typing this on a 7.5 year old phone that I haven’t updated in some years.

    • @gpettus9508
      @gpettus9508 16 днів тому +2

      I accidentally updated my phone and they changed the looks of all my emojis. The red heart on my phone "❤" is now more of a magenta, and it is the stupidest change ever. That changes the meaning.
      They also changed the shading on the heart emojis so some of them look taller than the others even though they aren't... it truly was better before they changed my emojis.

    • @jimwilliams3816
      @jimwilliams3816 16 днів тому +1

      I know, they change things just for the sake of making changes. I think the development teams must be trying to justify their continued existence, and when a problem is already mature, they have to do it that way.
      I have managed not to update my phone because one thing they haven’t changed is the two step procedure for opting out when they bug me to update. I know what to click. If they change that, I’ll accidentally update too. As it is, the phone is getting crotchety, though it has been for about 4 years, and hasn’t died yet. But there are more and more sites I can no longer access because they use bleeding edge code. Somewhere along the line my luck will run out. As it is, I just had to get a new laptop for my job, and it’s a newer OS...so stressful. I’m still using the old laptop but the keyboard has stopped functioning, and I’m only a year from when thsr OS stops being supported. (Sigh)

  • @Patchouliprince
    @Patchouliprince 18 днів тому +27

    Rearranging is the worst! The store I shop at is one my family has shopped at for over a decade and I’m SO accustomed to it but recently they started changing some of the freezer isles around and it took me a month to finally look in that section and start buying products there again 😅

    • @SylviaRustyFae
      @SylviaRustyFae 18 днів тому +4

      Yea, their intent is to force every customer to have to walk thru the entire store each time things change; bcuz that increases the likelihood of you buyin things you wudntve got otherwise
      Notably, im the person who short of when im gettin less than a dozen things; ill just start at one side of the store and work my way thru it tryin to find all the things...
      Bcuz i cant be arsed memorisin store layouts only for me to nvr find them; and its easier for me to have this simple routine of shoppin instd of havin to change it each time things change. It takes me like 20 mins longer to shop than most folk, but it means i can more zone out as i do such and notve to think about the routine of shoppin at all, nor ever change it

    You are spot on! It's the same at my supermarket in the U.S. Constantly shifting the layout, discontinuing tried-and-true favorites or repackaging them so you get half as much for the old price (e.g., shrimp/prawn cocktail). Not to mention medical cannabis at dispensaries, which I rely on. Since recreational use was legalized, my old stand-bys have been replaced by constantly-changing designer crap: twice the price and half as effective. I won't apologize for the rant, but thanks for allowing me to let off steam! Wish I had the energy to be an activist.

    I was in a chain bookstore (Indigo, which is like Canada's equivalent of Waterstones in the UK) the other day, and while they haven't changed around the sections of the store since I was last in, they've done this thing where they have some family-friendly games and puzzles in the kids' section, but then they have others in a random display in the middle of their household goods/decor area! I found a game for my niece's birthday in the kids' section and my mom found a puzzle for her in this weird display.

    Hi there!
    I am an autistic-ADHD person who has worked stocking shelves (overnight).
    Most of the time there is a season change (could be holiday, or "product promotion based") and all the new products coming in won't fit in the existing space available. Corporate then decides where things are moving within the store. Overnight gets a print out of where things are moving (sometimes there is a week to plan, but most times it would be night of change).
    Yes it sucks for all involved. This is your reminder that workers have little (or mainly) no say in this.
    (I say this as someone who has been scolded by customers over these changes)

So many have gluten-free requirements, and there are so few options. So, on the 1st, it's a race of gluten-free people racing to the store to stock up on our favorite food before it's all gone.
