Is it wrong to admit that I've lost track of how many times I've listened to all 3 Project Aegis songs, and am now a growing fan of the main projects of all musicians involved? As a musician and Christian, I get so many chills by the music and lyrics of Matt Smith, and these songs (which I was introduced to shortly after becoming a fan of Theocracy), have gotten me into the prog rock/prog metal genre. I'd love to see all artists/bands involved in a full Project Aegis album!!!!

His voice has gotten much weaker over the years (though MASSIVE props to him for even being able to still hit the notes with any sort of power), whereas Daniel's has shown absolutely ZERO signs of deterioration. If anything, it has just gotten stronger. The dude is absurdly good. From the crystal clear tones to the raw power and the downright masterful placement of his vowels, it's just a perfect mix that creates a singer unlike any other.

The quickest 9 minutes of my life!!! Matt you’ve created a new magnum opus, perhaps your best work since Mirror of Souls!! Though all your music is on another level. Amazing work everyone.
I'd say it's definitely his best since I AM. Mirror of Souls is his true magnum opus and this song is downright incredible, but I AM's use of leitmotif and poetic descriptions of God is out of this world in terms of brilliance. What sold me on that fact is how the core motif of I AM (the melody at 3:12 in the chorus, for example) is an almost identical replica of the motif he used way back in '03 on the self-titled album in New Jerusalem around the bridge (also at 3:12). I also believe I hear a slower version of the motif, more triumphant in tone, in Easter during the orchestrations at the end but I might just be hearing things. Also, I'm not sure if it's intentional, but 3 and 12 are both holy numbers of God (3 for the Trinity and 12 for the Tribes of Israel, among other things) and considering how the motif seems to be symbolic of God the Father, it could very possibly have been intentional. Speaking of numbers, again, I may be looking too deeply into it but if you pay attention to this song, Matt uses threes very often. Three renditions of the chorus, the use of triplicate melodies in the verses, three solo parts for each vocalist (excluding Leah), at least three vocalists singing the choral vocals at all times and three vocalists singing the outro lines. Like I said, there's a good chance I'm really looking too deeply into this but knowing the level of intelligence that Matt pours into his music, it could be intentional symbolism when the songs are specifically talking about God and His greatness.

Matt is just unreal. There really isn't any better composer in power metal and he's top five as far as prog goes, no doubt, probably top three; only Devin Townsend has better-written prog overall, really. Matt's ear for melody and harmony is out of this world, his music and lyrics are crafted with such intelligence, his singing carries both technicality and emotion and he's seriously unbeaten. How anyone can say otherwise is just beyond me. I don't even really listen to Theocracy as much as I used to (mostly listening to post-rock/post-metal nowadays) but to this day, his work is just unbeatable.
@@Celatra Tobi is brilliant as well, he was the one that truly inspired me to start teaching myself how to sing (though James LaBrie and Roy Khan were even earlier influences on me) but I like Matt's writing and vocal style more. I don't hate any of Tobi's writing but Matt has kept his work consistent. Part of it has to do with the fact that he's an absolute perfectionist that doesn't release ANY sub-par music lol
Every time I listen to this, I'm reminded of why Daniel Heiman is one of my favorite vocalists. Obviously, his power, tone and range are fantastic but I also really love the way he places his vowels. On the last "and the rest is mystery" line, he goes from the "ee" sound to the "aah" sound, which opens up a bigger sound and feels more powerful. He does a lot of that across his various bands, I've noticed, and it's one thing that really gives him that signature sound.

I've heard Theocracy before on UA-cam, but never heard of this project until now, and I am...BLOWN....AWAY!!! Just an awesome blend of music, voices, musicianship, and harmonies. Each voice is beautiful and distinct...the opening guitar is so beautiful, and each change of tempo and sound is a magical journey to a new place. I CAN'T get enough!!!!!!!!!

Theocracy rocks to start off with, Matt Smith is beyond great, everything he writes is a masterpiece, and Neal Morse, wow, he brings a whole new level to this tune, a depth, a soul, Daniel Heiman, well what can I say, his voice says it all, everything he touches turns to gold, everything. Leah McHenry, she is the heavenly sound of angles they wanted, I'm sure. Ernie Topran pounding the skins and brings that ever so soft touch as the song needs, looks great back there playing and Val Allen Wood, he is fire on the guitar, I thought that thing was going to burst into flames, or the strings would just melt. What a great tune, thank you all.

Absolutely! So many fail to hear the similarities but Matt's writing is even greater than Jon or Paul's, IMO. Plus, Matt doesn't write corny lyrics like some Savatage/TSO stuff haha
If only a label would take notice and back this, I can't see how it could not succeed with the same caliber of Avantasia, TSO, Ayreon, etc. - so damn good - CONSISTENTLY.
@@MetalAges Well, Ulterium seems to be very friendly with Matt so it may happen someday, but they're not a huge label so I'm not sure if they could afford to help fund such a project or not, especially if it was run as a charity metal opera.

How have I missed Daniel Heimanns vocal talent ?. I have, been listening to rock, Christian and non Christian rock all my life. What a set of pipes he has and what a brilliant masterpiece of a song.
Matt's use of point-counterpoint is something else. This song, and the song "I Am" with his band Theocracy are two examples. Such a great lyricist and composer.
You will not be disappointed. I'm not a big metal fan because I often can't stand the snarl/scream vocal styles that most bands have, but I don't have to worry about that with Theocracy.
Welcome to the greatest prog/power band ever. In my book, Matt's the greatest writer of power metal and top 3 in terms of prog. We don't get albums very often (only 4 albums in a 17-year career) but that's because Matt is an absolute perfectionist with his music, meaning every album is as solid as it can be. Definitely one of my all-time favorite bands!
Matt. May I suggest you do something more with Leah? Like a story between an earthly man Meeting an angelic being? And coming to terms with Godly principles and acceptance of living and dying and the rewards for remaining principled, stoic, disciplined on Christian values. Refusing temptations, etc. And the projected results of what that may be? This could be a song to aspire men to remain grounded in Christian values, and continue to be the men God aspires us to be. Just an idea. I hope with your talent and skills, you can come up with something. Yes i also play. Not at your level. But i do love playing music. God bless my friend. Keep up the outstanding work!!
I never normally comment on UA-cam videos but this deserves it. It's some of the greatest songwriting and lyricism I've ever heard in my life. Instant favourite, I pray that one day Project Aegis has a new release because all three of your songs have been incredible, and this just set the bar almost unattainably high.

This song just doesn't get old. What beautiful piece of music and the vocals are layered perfectly. I almost get chills when I see Daniel pop in the screen.

Theocracy rocks to start off with, Matt Smith is beyond great, everything he writes is a masterpiece, and Neal Morse, wow, he brings a whole new level to this tune, a depth, a soul, Daniel Heiman, well what can I say, his voice says it all, everything he touches turns to gold, everything. Leah McHenry, she is the heavenly sound of angles they wanted, I'm sure. Ernie Topran pounding the skins and brings that ever so soft touch as the song needs, looks great back there playing and Val Allen Wood, he is fire on the guitar, I thought that thing was going to burst into flames, or the strings would just melt. What a great tune, thank you all.

Absolutely! So many fail to hear the similarities but Matt's writing is even greater than Jon or Paul's, IMO. Plus, Matt doesn't write corny lyrics like some Savatage/TSO stuff haha
If only a label would take notice and back this, I can't see how it could not succeed with the same caliber of Avantasia, TSO, Ayreon, etc. - so damn good - CONSISTENTLY.
@@MetalAges Well, Ulterium seems to be very friendly with Matt so it may happen someday, but they're not a huge label so I'm not sure if they could afford to help fund such a project or not, especially if it was run as a charity metal opera.

How have I missed Daniel Heimanns vocal talent ?. I have, been listening to rock, Christian and non Christian rock all my life. What a set of pipes he has and what a brilliant masterpiece of a song.

Matt's use of point-counterpoint is something else. This song, and the song "I Am" with his band Theocracy are two examples. Such a great lyricist and composer.

Ending is as good as any prog rock I've ever heard. Great work. Never heard of Theocracy before, but I'll be checking them out now.
You will not be disappointed. I'm not a big metal fan because I often can't stand the snarl/scream vocal styles that most bands have, but I don't have to worry about that with Theocracy.
Welcome to the greatest prog/power band ever. In my book, Matt's the greatest writer of power metal and top 3 in terms of prog. We don't get albums very often (only 4 albums in a 17-year career) but that's because Matt is an absolute perfectionist with his music, meaning every album is as solid as it can be. Definitely one of my all-time favorite bands!

The vocals are superb. Absolute brilliance. But man, those guitar solos, WOW! (from a bass player in awe.....)
Matt. May I suggest you do something more with Leah? Like a story between an earthly man
Meeting an angelic being? And coming to terms with Godly principles and acceptance of living and dying and the rewards for remaining principled, stoic, disciplined on Christian values. Refusing temptations, etc.
And the projected results of what that may be?
This could be a song to aspire men to remain grounded in Christian values, and continue to be the men God aspires us to be.
Just an idea. I hope with your talent and skills, you can come up with something. Yes i also play. Not at your level. But i do love playing music.

I never normally comment on UA-cam videos but this deserves it. It's some of the greatest songwriting and lyricism I've ever heard in my life. Instant favourite, I pray that one day Project Aegis has a new release because all three of your songs have been incredible, and this just set the bar almost unattainably high.
