  • Once House Finches mate for the season, they flirt. I would consider some of the male's seduction truly annoying, but the female finds it enchanting. PLEASE CLICK 'LIKE' IF YOU APPRECIATE THE MOVIE.

      @@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME my love of birding started when I was a little girl recovering from brain surgery. It resumed last October when Juncos started coming to my tiny yard in droves. I named it "Junco Junction" and put seed out all the time. When it snowed I shoveled for both my dogs and my new bird friends. I posted videos on Tik Tok and people loved them. I talked to them and they became friendly and unafraid of me. Mourning doves started visiting and they represented my Daddy and 2 Angel pups. When spring came I started turning my tiny area into what is now called a "Sanctuary." I've researched different birds, their favourite foods and types of feeders. I have attracted finches, sparrows, Wrens, starlings, Cardinals, chipping sparrows (a ma regularly brings her baby by and I get to hear his loud demand for her nurturing). She was feeding a baby cowbird for a while. A sweet wren has built a nest in a homemade birdhouse next to my sliding glass back door. She stopped on my grill cover to serenade me and then would off to grab another twig though I placed a bunch of dried grasses and sticks out for her.. She's very independent. I get the sweetest catbird. Every evening I have my outdoor routine of sweeping up, refilling feeders and cleaning out and refreshing my makeshift bird bath. They practically dive bomb me and I talk with them. I greet them each morning and thank them for coming, say goodnight and I love you when I last let my dog out. It might sound silly however they bring me such joy. Thank you for your channel!!

Have gotten some pictures over the years and memories. This year saddly, the mourning doves have messed up the house finches nest. I am so sad. It was joy watching those birds raise their family. You are a true bird watcher. I watch closely as well. The past few years I've noticed the finches love to pluck off the barely opened buds of my weeping cherry tree. They twirl the plucked ends in their beaks to get the nectar and quickly toss it away. It's kinda sad that I never get to see the tree in full bloom but I don't try to stop them as that would be futile because I've tried to shoo them but the minute I'm back in the house, they're right back at it. Oh well! I love the closeness of the pairs. They are always close together. More than other species even. Their jubilant, bubbly song is so cheerful and they are so well behaved at the feeders. They'll always be welcome here!

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  2 роки тому

      I got such a kick out of reading your description of the finches raiding your weeping cherry tree. Our weeping cherries are at the back of the yard, so I never observe that. But I was glad to hear you say that you’ve also noticed how they sit together a lot. It did seem to me that they do it more than other birds, but I like to hear it confirmed. As for them being well behaved at the feeders, I don’t know. I have quite a bit of footage of them quarreling with each other at the feeders that I plan to use in another movie. The house sparrows attack them because the house sparrows are bigger, but they attack the gold finches because the gold finches are smaller. And so it goes.

I always bring my binoculars! Minnesota has the highest population of loons in the US, but they are mostly in the northern part of the state. With about 15,000 lakes they are not too hard to see! There is nothing like hearing their cry over a peaceful lake, especially at night when they are most vocal. The small town we used to live in had 3 lakes in walking distance, and every night through the summer months I would hear the loons calling to each other as they would wing their way back to their favorite lake. Seeing a loon is an experience not an an observation! They are such regal birds.

      @@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME I don't know if you may have any advice, but the male finch I have become friends with, he even brought his girl to my porch to eat with him 💕, anyways though, I'm extremely worried about his well-being, for some reason, it seems he struggles to fly. This concerns me because I have had horrific experiences with my neighbors loose cats. The mother cat killed my bestest chipmunk friend and it also is extremely good at going after birds 💔 and I must protect Billy Craig the finch. Might you have any ideas how I can keep him safe? I'm so worried. He would be the perfect target and that breaks my heart because just like Marvin the chipmunk, he's a sweetheart.
